Manheim Township

Afamiliar structure or feature that helps individuals to determine their location, landmarks can define and distinguish an area. Landmarks also possess the power to bridge the passage of time. The Manheim Township Historical Society’s new exhibit explores the effects that landmarks continue to have on our area.
BY JEFF FALK
There’s a place in Warwick Township where people can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. It’s an undisturbed oasis where individuals can connect with their roots, where time almost seems to stand still, where quiet is so profound that it overcomes any lingering thoughts.
Millport Conservancy is 75 flat
“Landmark can be a formal term, but what I’m sharing are informal landmarks,” said Ben Webber, who’s
been the president of the Manheim Township Historical Society for six years. “I use it in the vernacular of what people use to know where they’re going. How do we gauge where we are with landmarks in the township? People might not know the histories of these places,
but they might be tempted to learn about the history of these places. Where? When? And what was it used for? Those are all the questions I hope it spurs in people.”
The Manheim Township Historical Society’s “Landmarks of Manheim Township - Then and
acres of adolescent and mature trees, brush and natural grass, with Lititz Run flowing through it.
“When I’m in nature, it makes me feel refreshed,” said Lynn Myers, a steward of the land and the executive director of Millport Conservancy. “I can hear the water. A day at Millport is always different. You can’t really describe it without being in it.”
Located at 737 E. Millport Road,
Lititz, Millport Conservancy has a mission as a 501(c)(3) to preserve this particular parcel of land and to protect its natural integrity. Millport Conservancy is open to the public and free to visit, but catch-and-release fly fishermen are required to purchase a badge to practice their art.
Swimming is not permitted in Lititz Run at Millport Conservancy. Dogs on leashes are allowed, but
Now” exhibit is currently on display at the historical society’s Stoner House Museum, located inside Overlook Park, 601 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The exhibit can be viewed by the public free of charge from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday from now until December.
“The purpose is to help people develop an appreciation of these landmarks,” said Webber. “The then and now helps people to explore and feel the passage of time. These are things that were here 200 years ago and still are. It’s hard to capture that without photos, and it’s very captivating to think through these comparisons. We’re using this to tell stories and to get people to look into the past.”
“I want members of the community to know that they live in a continuum,” Webber continued. “Things haven’t always been the
way they are today, and things aren’t always going to be the way they are today.”
The exhibit features comparison photos of 15 recognizable buildings or places, all of which hold some sort of historic significance locally. The comparison photos are enhanced by short narrative descriptions and maps showing their exact locations in Manheim Township.
Included in the exhibit are the oldest tavern in Lancaster County, a mill, a local neighborhood, estates and roadways. All of the landmarks are at least a century old, and some are more than 300 years old.
“I’d say about half of (the landmarks) are still being used for what they were originally intended, and the other half have been repurposed,” said Webber. “Some of them were just built

better, built to be more robust. They’ve been loved and appreciated and taken care of. For others, reasons were determined to keep maintaining them. Each story is different. Some have public money that has gone into them, and some have private money that has gone into them.”
Webber has identified dozens of other landmarks in Manheim Township worthy of exploration and display.
“These (15) were the ones I had already pulled together,” said Webber. “I felt like these would be the ones people would react to. I do have a whole slew more that I can do. I would say there’s probably 60 landmarks I’d like to have on display. I’m working on the next round, but they probably won’t be ready to put up before the end of the year.”
“Landmarks of Manheim Township - Then and Now” is a great example of the kind of informational program that the historical society strives to present to the community. Founded in 2014, the Manheim Township Historical Society is made up of about 70 active members.
“The mission of the Manheim Township Historical Society is to research and promote the history of Manheim Township,” said Webber. “The main impetus from the beginning was to turn the Stoner House into a museum. It took a lot of effort and energy, but that mission has been pretty much accomplished. Now we’ve shifted to research and public awareness and getting people engaged in educational programs.”

Find Waldo Local is a way to support the Shop Local movement by increasing foot traffic to a variety of stores.
According to Sam Droke-Dickinson, co-owner of Aaron’s Books, this is the book store’s seventh time participating in the event. He noted that each year more and more families are enjoying the scavenger hunt, which may lead to the discovery
of a new favorite shop or eatery in downtown Lititz.
To participate, people can simply pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Lititz!” stamp card at any of the participating stores. With

Through stories, crafts, games, and music, “The Bible” takes a look at what the Bible is, where it came from, and how to use it. We will be looking at some of the characters whose lives and actions are depicted in its pages, in addition to Jesus’ life, and what it means for us today.
A class for adults, led by Rev. Jack Esbenshade, will be looking at excerpts from the book, “Heroes, Rogues and the Rest,” by J. Ellsworth Kalas.
Over four sessions we will look at Abraham and Sarah, along with David in the Old Testament, and then turn to the New Testament to look at Peter, James and John, as well as Paul. Offerings support Wycliffe Bible Translators.

“The land is preserved, and we do what we can to help the environment,” said Lynn. “We’re trying to protect this piece of beautiful land and trying to connect things so it will be here when we’re not here. Some people have never been here before, and they’ll say to me, ‘Is it open? Can we go for a walk? Tell us about it.’ A lot of people come out of curiosity.”
In addition to Lititz Run as a water attraction, Millport Conservancy features a very manageable nature trail and two walkway bridges over the running water. Trout reproduce in the stream, and the meadow is home to birds, deer, squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, foxes and minks.
“I think people are curious about what we really are about,” said Lynn. “The fishermen are aware of what we’re doing. I want everyone to know that they are welcome. I want people to enjoy the land and to appreciate what Millport is about. We appreciate people being respectful.”
said Lynn. “Some of the students we get have never been out in nature like this before. (Seeing people enjoying nature) is a really good feeling. It’s satisfying and rewarding for my husband and me.”
For her part, Lynn enjoys an emotional connection with Millport Conservancy. Her parents, Robert and Carolyn Wohlsen, founded the conservancy, and now she and her husband, Logan Myers, a former member of the Warwick board of supervisors, manage and maintain the land.
“It’s pretty much my life,” said Lynn. “I enjoy talking to people who understand our mission. We’re grateful to be out here in nature and away from the world, and I like the school children. It’s become our home.”
Lynn’s parents purchased the adjacent Millport Roller Mill property in 1969 and over the years acquired parcels of land surrounding it. In 1988, Millport was officially recognized as a conservancy.

“Originally, most of the land was used as farmland and to run the mill,” said Lynn. “I think over the years we’ve become more environmentally aware of what a conservancy is. We’ve gotten a greater knowledge, and we’ve learned how to manage the area better.”
“It’s been a part of my life since 1969,” she added. “With my family being so close to it, I’m proud of it. I’m proud of the accomplishments and the success that it’s become.”

Recreation is a key element of a healthy lifestyle. And music is one of the most energizing forms of recreation.
Akron Borough Council’s upcoming summer concert is simply a way for it to enhance the lives of the 4,000 residents it serves.
“Borough council wants to provide an opportunity for friends and neighbors to come together and build us all up as a community,” said Bonnie Young, who’s been a member of Akron Borough Council for four years. “Borough council is working hard to benefit the community in the best ways possible. Everything we do is thinking about the community and making it an uplifting place to live.”
Akron Borough Council is sponsoring an appearance by the local band Mitch and the Moodswings at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, at Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park’s Pavilion 2, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. The twohour concert, which will include an intermission, is free to attend.
Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and even a picnic supper. Bathrooms will be open and available.
“To me, it’s joyful, just the music itself,” said Young. “It’s uplifting and cheerful. It’s just a very positive vibe.”
The lively concert will include about 30 recognizable numbers, hits from the ’60s and ’70s, rock ’n’ roll, Motown, soul and rhythm and blues. The selections are intended to engage the audience and compel members to dance or move their feet in some rhythmic way.
“We’ll be throwing a whole bunch of stuff at you,” said Mitch Mohler, the band’s front man and lead singer. “The coolest thing about this is the band’s connection with the audience. It’s incredible. It’s unbelievable how the music will
make the audience feel a part of it.”
The audience is expected to number more than 200 members, including individuals from Akron and surrounding communities.
“It brings back memories for many people,” said Young. “All ages actually like it. It’s a fun and lively kind of music. This is the third year we brought this group back because people love seeing them. It’s cute to watch. It’s very theatrical. I think this group has a following.”
In addition to Mohler, Mitch and the Moodswings is made up of two lead guitarists, a bass guitarist, a drummer, a saxophone player, a keyboardist and two female vocalists. Members of the band hail from East Earl, Denver and Marietta. Mitch and the Moodswings’ show in Akron is one of nine performances, mostly in Lancaster County, that the band will stage this summer. This summer marks 21 years of the band playing together.
“We love having people out there,” said Mohler, who resides near Brickerville. “I can’t describe that feeling to you. That’s what makes this so much fun. It completes me. Entertaining and seeing people’s responses completes me. It’s awesome.”
The July 6 performance is the only concert being sponsored by
Akron Borough Council this summer.
“We put a lot of emphasis on recreation when it comes to Akron,” said Young. “We put a lot of money into our parks. We think our parks are an important part of living a healthy life, a happy life. It’s a priority for Akron Borough Council. We want to do things that benefit the Akron community, but we want to be fiscally conservative.”
“Akron is a really friendly place,” continued Young. “It’s a safe place. It’s charming. It has a hometown feel to it. It maintains a little tradition. It’s a beautiful place to live.”
Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rock Ford Road, Lancaster, will present “The Sounds of Commemoration: The Music of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour” by Christina McSherry on Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m.

This presentation is part of the museum’s Lafayette Lecture Series and will be held on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. There is a fee for admission, and tickets may be purchased at www.historicrockford.org/ special-events.
