In state poster contest, students clean up

If a neater Earth is a more fruitful one, and, if indeed, children are our future, then a pair of Manheim Township elementary school students are out to make the world a better place to live.

A few months back, local residents Nadia Weaver and Reese Guarnero were selected as firstplace winners in the annual Litter Hawk Youth Award program. At the time, Reese was a secondgrade student at Nitrauer Elementary School, and Nadia was a first-grader at Reidenbaugh Elementary School.

Hunsecker’s Mill covered bridge is a link to the past

Lancaster County boasts the most covered bridges in Pennsylvania and the second-most in the nation. The structures offer transportation across the area’s waterways and enhance the beauty of the landscape. They are also gateways to the past, spanning generations and reminding people of a time when life proceeded at a slower pace.

Located at 1335 Hunsecker Road, Lancaster, Hunsecker’s Mill is one of three covered bridges in Manheim Township, one of 28 in Lancaster County and one of about 200 in Pennsylvania. Not only is it a local landmark, but it is also a local treasure.

“I think it’s a charming vision into our agrarian past,” said Manheim Township Historical Society president Ben Webber. “It’s a

connection to our history. A lot of these concrete bridges people drive across and don’t even know they’re on a bridge.”

“There was a practice a long time ago (that) you’d drive across a covered bridge, you’d stop halfway across and kiss your partner,” continued Webber. “That’s part of their charm.”

Some 180 feet long and 15 feet wide, with a clearance of 13 feet,

Hunsecker’s Mill is a one-lane covered bridge spanning the Conestoga River and connecting Manheim Township and Upper Leacock Township. The bridge, which is maintained by the state of Pennsylvania, is constructed almost entirely of wood, and its covering or roof ensures the integrity of the structure and helps extend the lifespan of the bridge.

Nadia and Reese created and colored posters illustrating positive changes that can be made to reduce trash, garbage and clutter in public spaces. The program was sponsored by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, and the Manheim Township students were two of over 900 Pennsylvania students in kindergarten through sixth grade who participated in the educational campaign.

“I care about litter in the environment,” said Reese. “It’s trash that people throw on the ground. It hurts animals and plants, and if we litter too much, we don’t have enough fresh water. All the ideas (for my poster) came from my head.”

“The bridges were covered to protect the structure of the wood,” said Webber. “It’s a lot easier to replace a roof than the wood structure of the bridge. Just like you would do for a house.”

Named for the former Amos Hunsecker’s mill at the

same location, the Hunsecker’s Mill covered bridge was built by Joseph Russell for $1,988 in 1848.

“Wherever there was a mill, there was a dam,” said Webber. “These mills were desirable places to take your product, and that’s where roads

“It’s clearly a success story for preservationists,” said Webber. “It gives you a sense that you’re back in time. It gives you a sense of how different life used to be. It’s a lovely, lovely bridge.”

Twenty-one years after Hunsecker’s Mill covered bridge was constructed, a flood washed it away. When the covered bridge was rebuilt, it was raised three feet higher, but on June 22, 1972, storm waters from Hurricane Agnes swept the Hunsecker’s Mill bridge away again.

Webber said that at that time, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation wanted to build a concrete bridge allowing two-way

“If the bridge was seeing a lot more traffic or more development on each side, it might have to be replaced,” concluded Webber. “The area has a lot of protected agricultural land around it. This isn’t only a way to get from point A to point B. People absolutely love this bridge. It’s really something people enjoy.”

Brickerville Church plans picnic

The community is invited to attend Brickerville United Lutheran Church’s “Ole Fashioned Picnic in the Park” on Saturday, July 1, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. The picnic will take place at the church’s shaded grove at 340 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz (Brickerville).

The event will honor all veterans and active military members. The Ringgold Band of Reading will once again provide entertainment in addition to a strolling balloon twisting artist. Other children’s activities will also be offered.

The picnic will be held rain or shine. Donations will be accepted at the gate to help offset entertainment costs but are not required. Guests should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating to enjoy the outdoor performance under the shade trees.

“We have cows at our farm,” said Nadia. “So I thought I could draw one for the contest, and I used a stencil. You have to pick up litter. It’s from people who are messy who throw it around. It doesn’t look pretty. Certain animals eat litter, and if they do, they could die. And if they step on it, they could get hurt.”

In addition to advocating against litter, Nadia helps on her family farm, caring for steer, gardening and

harvesting fresh produce. A member of Hammer Creek Mennonite Church, Nadia is big sister to Karli, 4, and Luke, 2.

When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Nadia said, “I haven’t decided yet.” She continued, “I have a couple things I’m thinking about. I’m thinking about being a doctor or a nurse, an artist or a magician. Just because I think they’d be fun to do. I also like to help people.”

An avid recycler, Reese wants Nitrauer Elementary to begin a composting program. She enjoys spending time with animals and being in nature, and two of her favorite activities are gymnastics and roller skating.

“I want to be a person who goes and picks up litter,” said Reese, “just because I like picking up litter around my neigh-

borhood and at school. I do it at my school a lot. When I see it, it makes me sad.”

Reese’s and Nadia’s winning entries were displayed in the East Wing Rotunda of the state Capitol in Harrisburg from May 4 to 26. Entries for the program are annually received from the fall until Jan. 31, and then they are judged before winners are announced during Earth Month, April.

Lancaster County teacher wins award

Crystal Meashey, a fourthgrade teacher at Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) and at the Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School program, has been named as one of four recipients of the 2023 Lyn McNaught Teacher Award.

Named for the former executive director of Horizons at New Canaan Country School and the first executive director of Horizons National, the honor is awarded to educators who have excelled in Horizons’ classrooms by providing exemplary opportunities for young people across the country.

Horizons is a public-private partnership between Lancaster Country Day School and the

School District of Lancaster. Each summer, a new cohort of 15 kindergarten students from George Washington Elementary and Elizabeth Martin Elementary schools are recruited, and those same students come back summer after summer through eighth grade. Many students have fallen behind in reading and math as a result of the pandemic, and these challenges are multiplied for students from communities experiencing educational inequity. Horizons exists to accelerate learning recovery. Students gain an average of six to 10 weeks in reading and math over the course of a summer.

Meashey joined Horizons at LCDS in the summer of 2016

with its kindergarten cohort. Since then, she has spent every summer learning and building relationships with the same cohort, which is now in seventh grade. Meashey is also a mentor to newer Horizons teachers, helping with lesson planning, ideas and classroom management. At Lancaster Country Day School, she continually advocates for the program, which incldues recruiting new teachers and helping to find resources and spaces each summer.

The Lyn McNaught Teacher Awards were presented at the annual Lyn McNaught Teacher Award Luncheon celebration during Horizons National’s 2023 annual conference in Albuquerque, N.M., which convenes program leaders, teachers and board members from more than 70 Horizons programs in 20 states.

group.

This year’s theme was “PA Fights Dirty - Every Litter Bit Matters.”

“The theme changes each year,” said Stephanie Larson, program coordinator for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. “We were thrilled with the responses and had a really difficult time choosing the winners. They all did such a great job.”
