But etiquette is also about respect for others and respect for oneself.

“It really is all about respect; respecting people’s space, experiences, opinions and comfort levels, even respecting the effort someone put into creating an experience,” said Hartley. “Something as simple as dressing appropriately for an event can be a form of respect.

Volunteers Help Samaritan Center Hit Home Runs

It is not enough to appreciate the contributions of volunteers.

Nonprofit organizations must express that appreciation.

At its upcoming event, the Samaritan Center will validate the contributions its volunteers constantly and consistently make.

“Our volunteers are super important,” said Nancy Pleger, R128402

the development officer for the Samaritan Center. “They are the ones who keep the place running. They give support to staff members and the executive team and allow us to do more. They use their connections to help us get in doors.

Navigating a Pet’s Final Journey

When a beloved pet is aging or nearing the end of its life, the emotional weight can feel overwhelming. That’s when Ashley Page steps in. As a certified endof-life pet doula, she offers compassionate, nonmedical support to both pets and their people, helping families navigate aging, terminal illness and difficult end-of-life decisions with care and dignity.

“My role is to help families feel supported emotionally, practically and compassionately,” she said. “That support can look very different depending on the family’s needs. Some people reach out because they need help understanding quality of life changes, while others are preparing for euthanasia, struggling with anticipatory grief or simply feeling overwhelmed caring for an aging pet.”

Based in York, Page is the owner of Willow Bridge Crossings.

She provides in-home services throughout the county as well as in Lancaster County, and she offers virtual grief support services anywhere through phone calls, text support, FaceTime or Zoom.

“I can help families create comfort-focused routines at home, make environmental adjustments for senior pets, talk through end-of-life planning, provide euthanasia presence and support, assist with memorial ideas and aftercare guidance and offer grief support before and after a loss,” she said.

She knows what it’s like to lose a pet and to feel alone in her grief.

“After unexpectedly losing my soul dog, Jackson, I found myself facing a kind of grief that

Among the greatest gifts of all is the gift of life. Evan Bunting gave the gift of life, multiple times in multiple ways.

Now, his spirit lives on in the lives of others.

“God had a plan I wasn’t aware of, and I didn’t like it,” said Ellen Smoll, Evan’s mom. “It was God’s plan, not mine. Maybe that was the thing He was planning.

Now I always want to help people. But I’ve learned a lot about organ donations.

“It’s just so unnatural for your child to leave before you,” she added.

It’s been nearly 14 years since that tragic day, June 19, 2012, when Evan, a vibrant 2009 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, lost his young life in a tragic motorcycle accident. During the process of his passing, a parental decision was made to donate Evan’s organs to individuals in need of transplants and to science.

Those donations were made through Gift of Life, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that connects donors to transplant recipients.

“It was probably 100 people he impacted,” said Ellen, a resident of East Earl Township. “I wanted his heart to be beating in someone else. He had beautiful eyes, and I wanted someone else to have them.

I did get a letter from one of my son’s recipients and she’s doing great, and I met his liver recipient.

“It was a difficult time to make a decision,” Ellen continued. “But the people from Gift of Life were so kind. They know how to get somebody through that. I think God would want you to help everyone.”

During his high school days at Conestoga Valley, Evan was involved with the small engine program at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Willow Street campus.

“Evan was truly a blessing,” said Ellen. “He

absolutely lived life to the fullest every day. He had an infectious smile every day.

His smile said everything.”

Though details remain sketchy, it seems there were no other vehicles involved in Evan’s accident.

“We can’t figure it out,” said Ellen. “We have met with the police, and they tried to re-enact it, but we just don’t know. A lady saw him, stopped and held his hand.”

Five years after Evan gave the gift of life, Ellen followed his example. She donated one of her kidneys to a woman in Georgia.

“I really didn’t know much about organ donations. But it touched my life,” said Ellen. “Every day is a gift.

Don’t take days with your family and friends lightly. If something like this occurs, do the great thing. You can’t take it when you leave.”

“I got the call no mom ever wants to get,” said Ellen. “The hospital called and said my son had been rushed to the emergency room. My heart sunk. When I arrived at the hospital, I was told to hold on and the chaplain met me. They told me he had sustained damage to his head and he had internal bleeding. I saw him for a few seconds before they took him into the operating room. Then it was just waiting.”

The next day, Evan’s brain showed no signs of activity, and he was pronounced dead. It was at that point that Ellen was introduced to representatives of Gift of Life.

“They asked me if I would consider donating Evan’s organs, and I immediately said, ‘ Yes,’” said Ellen.

“They kept him alive to take his gifts. I could hear the helicopters landing to take his organs. It was very emotional. I was in horrible grief, but it was a silver lining.”

Five days later, Ellen received a letter from Gift of Life. Evan’s heart went to a man in his 30s, his liver went to a woman in her 30s, one of his kidneys went to a man in his 50s and his other kidney and his pancreas went to a woman in her 30s. His lungs went to medical research, his skin went to breast cancer patients, one of his corneas went to a man in his 20s and his other cornea went to a woman in her 90s.

Healing Our Planet (HOP) will offer a program on Friday, June 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees should use the entrance on Concord Street.

The program will highlight appreciation. HOP will provide cards so that attendees may wr ite a note of appreciation for

someone they know, and attendees may join in a discussion about how people can show appreciation for others, the environment, and themselves.

Not only is etiquette a passion and way of life for Hartley, it’s also her business. As a certified etiquette consultant, she provides private lessons and conducts student programs and corporate trainings.

As part of her instruction, Hartley teaches social confidence, listening skills, com mun ic at ion sk il l s , kindness, executive presence, professional dining and international protocol.

“People are usually surprised by how much of etiquette is really communication and confidence,” said Hartley, a resident of Manheim Township. “Most people are not coming because they desperately want to master which fork to use. They want to feel comfortable in real-life sit-

uations. You can be incredibly smart and talented, but if you struggle to connect with people or communicate well, it becomes a lot harder to build relationships and opportunities.”

Although it has evolved over time, etiquette is as old and traditional as human interaction. Each culture defines etiquette in its own distinctive way, but the world can never have too much of it.

“Etiquette has never r e a l l y c h a n g e d ,” s a i d H a r t l e y. “ K i n d n e s s , respect, consideration, those things are timeless.

W hat ’s changed is the world around us. We now have texting, social media, Zoom meetings, workplace culture - all these things previous generations never had to think about. I think modern etiquette is much less about memorizing

rules and much more about understanding people and making them feel comfortable. But etiquette evolves as society evolves.”

About seven years ago, Hartley became certified to teach etiquette through for mal training at the Etiquette Institute in St. L o u i s , t h e C h a r l e s to n School of Protocol and Etiquette and the International Association of Professional E tiquette Consultants. Her education has been enhanced by book s and real-life experiences.

“I first learned at home,” said Hartley. “My mother was the epitome of hospitality and hosting.

When I first started, I was nervous. I wasn’t sure if people would see etiquette as something they truly wanted or needed. What surprised me was realizing

Art Association Posts Summer Exhibit The “Summer Media Wars” exhibit at the Lancaster County Art Association, 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will return with an opening reception on Sunday, June 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibit is a progressive show, and every three weeks it will feature a new theme and additional artwork. Award Nominations Sought As community hosts in partnership with Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute, the L ancaster Count y Community Foundation and L ancaster County Local Journalism Fund are launching a four-year effort to find, support, and celebrate ever y day neighbors who are building trust, nurturing belonging, and weaving the social fabric in the community. Through this year’s Weaver Awards, 20 local individuals or small organizations will be selected to receive $2,500

each to suppor t their work fostering connection in Lancaster County.

The Weaver Awards are a way the community can amplify and support the everyday people in local neighborhoods, schools, places of worship, and jobs who are weaving threads of connection through the community.

Nominations are open, and nominees must be residents of L ancaster County who are age 18 and older. While many people in Lancaster County are serving their neighbors, the Weaver Awards are

intended for those whose projects also create lasting relationships and build trust as people work together to strengthen t h e i r co m m u n i t y a n d weave a tighter social fabric.

People may apply for an award themselves or recommend a neighbor at www.weavelancaster county.org. T he application is intentionally simple, asking questions about the people involved, their project, and their community. Local nonprofit organizations with an operating budget less

than $250,000 are also e n c o u r a g e d t o a p p l y.

Nominations will close on Friday, July 24. Award winners will be announced and celebrated at a public event on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026.

Investing in and catalyzing connection in the community is a focus for both the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the Lancaster County Local Journalism Fund.

Following a national application process, they were together selected as one of 25 community host organizations across the U.S.

The Samaritan Center’s appreciation will be on full display during its Community and Volunteer event on Sunday, June 28, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, the home of the Lancaster S tor mers pro fession al baseball club. On that day, the Stormers will take on the Gastonia Ghost Peppers at 1:30 p.m. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m.

As part of the Samaritan Center’s volunteer and community celebration, game tickets can be purchased at reduced rates at https:// samaritanlancaster.org/ event/community-and -volunteer-event.

The event is also designed to serve as organizational o u tre ach to m a ke the community aware of what the Samaritan Center is all about and what it does. “ We wouldn’t be here without our volunteers,” said Pleger. “The Samaritan Center was established in 1988 as a mission of Highland Presby ter ian Church, and it was started by volunteers.”

At the ballpark that afternoon, a selected volunteer will throw out the first pitch, and a Samaritan Center official will address the fans about the work that the nonprofit performs in the community.

There will be promotions staged throughout the stadium, and the Samaritan Center will man an information table.

“We’re hoping it’s a fun, high-energy event,” said Pleger. “People can bring their families out and have a great time. The goal is to have a fun day, and so people can learn about

(the) Samaritan Center as well. We’re celebrating service and connecting our community.”

The Samaritan Center, which promotes mental health; provides related ser vices; and operates locations at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, and at 33 N. Market St., Suite 400, Lancaster, is staffed by 50 employees, mainly therapists and administrative personnel.

But the nonprofit also benefits from 1,000 annual volunteer hours donated by more than 70 altruistic individuals. The majority of the volunteers reside in Lancaster County. “ T h e y ’re a g ro u p o f individuals who really care about mental health in our community,” said Pleger.

“They want to make sure services are affordable and available to everyone.” “ We can play a lot of different roles, depending on where we are,” said Nick Heller, the Samaritan Center’s marketing manager.

“We break down barriers for people needing mental health services. We are here to help.”

From January to May this year, the Samaritan Center has provided more than 8,000 counseling sessions to clients. In 2025, the Samaritan Center furnished more than 17,000 counseling sessions, 2,000 more than it did in 2024.

As part of its services, the organization also offers mental health screenings, educational series, therapeutic programs, consulting, church programs, ministry assessment and its TeenHope program for kids.

Church Posts Patriotic Concert First Reformed Church, 40 E . Orange St., L ancaster, will present a concert, “Stars, Stripes, and Pipes,” on First Friday, July 3, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

The 30-minute program will feature guest organist Ken Krause, who is an organ builder w ith Columbia Organ Works and the organist at St. John Lutheran Church in Lancaster.

In celebration of the United States’ 250th

birthday, the concert will include “You’re a Grand Old Flag” by George M. Cohan and “Prayer for Peace” by Paul Fey, along with “Patriotic Prelude” by the late Gordon Young, who was an organist at First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.

The concert will conclude with Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”
