Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights.

“We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said.

PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program.

Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said.

Tom Oehme, coordinator of the 2021 Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) Antiques Show, is glad to see the event returning. “Last year’s antique show was canceled,” he noted, adding that this year’s show will have a new venue, among other changes.

The 58th show is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26, at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. On June 25, the show will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on June 26, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plenty of free parking will be available at the rec center and also at the Warwick Middle School next door. Funds raised by the event will be donated to the LHF.

According to Oehme, 45 dealers from around the country have been recruited for this year’s event. He stated that dealers plan to travel from as far away as New Hampshire. “There is one from Ohio and another from upstate New York,” Oehme said.

The show is known to offer diversity among the items that will be available for sale, and as in the past, items offered for sale should include plenty of Americana, country primitives, and unexpected items of interest. Organizers note that in 2021, attendees will find weathervanes, Christmas and holiday items, country

Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Free Community Publications Snapshot frompg 1

Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancastersnapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? What’s one of your favorite things or possessions? What keeps you hopeful? What’s something you want to last forever?

“The idea was to keep the questions open to get a varying degree of interpretation,” said Spangler, who noted there is space for a short caption. “There is no one way to answer these questions.” Participants will be able to visit the site, which includes a map of the county, to see their answers along with the answers of other participants. “You can zoom in (on a map) to see people’s entries,” explained Spangler, who noted that place specificity was important to see not only faces, but where people are in the county and the community.

Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be something they shared in their snapshot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that participants can communicate directly with each other. Cutler explained that it is a mission of LCCF to help achieve goals that are on the hearts of the people in Lancaster County. “We are connecting and investing in things people care about so those things can continue in the long term,” she said, noting that the project encourages reflection on things that are really important to people. “Our role is coming alongside people to help support their passions,” she explained. Spangler noted that the project takes a different approach to fostering connection. “What’s unique about Snapshot is that we’re focusing on the ways that we care about the community,” he said. “It’s not just my interests, but these are the things I want to sustain. That’s a stronger way to start relationships.” He stated that he has been impressed by the positive way community members have reacted to Lancaster Snapshot. “(It keeps me hopeful) when people say, ‘I would love to connect with the community,’” he said.

Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, is “beyond excited” to be taking Aaron’s Acres campers back to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) this summer, and staff at GMTRC are happy to be welcoming groups back to the barn at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. GMTRC works to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities.

Paskoff was quick to point out several of the benefits the horseback riding experience offers to campers, including increased self-esteem and confidence, improved flexibility, improved balance and strength, improved coordination, and the sense of independence, even with support staff walking along next to the camper.

In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions limited physical interactions between the two organizations, although GMTRC was able to offer some virtual programming to Aaron’s Acres campers through Zoom calls and social media. Now that the campers can visit the stable in person, they will be able to enjoy riding, grooming, and leading the horses, along with learning about the barn operations and helping keep the stable clean.

According to Paskoff, there is nothing better than seeing a camper get on a horse. “Whether it’s for the first time or for the 10th time … he or she is riding the horse,” said Paskoff. “For many of our campers, it is also unconditional acceptance from the horses (that is so important).” Paskoff added that the GMTRC staff are patient and kind as they help support each child with the goal of a safe, positive experience.

GMTRC program director Stephanie Fleck will be working with Aaron’s Acres campers for the first time this summer, and she is looking forward to the experience. “We are thrilled to have the campers back on the property,” she said. “We look forward to witnessing the physical and emotional interactions the campers will have when they encounter a horse.”

Readers who would like to learn about Aaron’s Acres may visit www.aaronsacres.org. More information about GMTRC is available at www.greystonemanortrc.org.

furniture in first generation paint, wooden carvings, butter prints, redware, signs, blue decorated stoneware, textiles, wrought iron implements, decoys, hooked rugs, fraktur, and tramp art. Oehme noted that the show is known for vendors who carry authentic antique items.

New this year, food will be offered for sale in a designated area outside the building. “The Masonic Lodge in Manheim will have food tables set up,” said Oehme, who has worked with the food vendor on other events and noted the popularity of the items available for purchase. “They usually do breakfast and lunch items, and they do an outstanding job. People really like the food,” he recalled.

There is a cost to attend the show. Children age 10 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Those who would like to know more about LHF may visit www.lititzhistoricalfoun dation.com or search for “Lititz Historical Foundation” on Facebook.
