Manheim Township introduces Class of 2023 to sunny side of life

In

the early morning hours of Aug. 30, 2022, members of the Manheim Township Class of 2023 gathered to watch the sunrise as a way of recognizing their first day of school.

Then, during the evening hours of May 24, 2023, the seniors came together again, this time to view the sunset on their final day of school. The following week, on June 1 at Calvary Church, Manheim Township’s Class of 2023 gathered one last time as a group, to graduate as a unit.

A special connection

Aaron’s Acres campers have chance to “horse around” at GMTRC

“Describing the emotional connection between a horse and a human is hard to verbalize, but it’s easy to witness,” said Jennifer Rummel, executive director at Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), who has spent time as a buddy to visiting Aaron’s Acres campers. “A horse’s nonjudgmental nature, its ability to communicate without language, and its therapeutic movement are inviting to people with special needs.”

Most summers since July of 2011, a partnership between Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21 through a summer camp, has brought campers to the GMTRC facility in Leola to experience that unique connection with a therapy horse. During the visits, campers ride horses and learn about equine care to engage in sensory processing activities.

In those days between the first day of the school year and the last, the graduating seniors completed the requirements for their high school diplomas, further matured as young adults and reinforced bonds that could last a lifetime. It was a year that served as both a

beginning and an end.

“I would say that if there’s one word to describe our graduating seniors, it would be unity,” said Manheim Township High School principal David Rilatt, “just because during our graduation ceremony, they did one single clap after every

student’s name was announced. What also makes them special is that the accomplishments they achieved were fantastic. They represented the school with class and sportsmanship.”

According to Rummel, there is something “magical” about experiencing the interaction between a child with unique abilities and a horse. She described watching a camper mount a horse named Violet for the first time.

“(The camper) felt the connection instantly,” she recalled. “What made this moment even more special is that this camper’s brother, who also is different-abled, was there to witness that moment.”

staff members, campers also have the opportunity to lead a horse through an obstacle course. “Volunteers and staff for both Aaron’s Acres and GMTRC work with the campers to help them with the obstacle course as well as other activities,” said Rummel, who noted that activities include a scavenger hunt, a painting activity, equine grooming and care, and onlead adaptive horseback riding. “(The activities are) based on each camper’s individual abilities and needs,” noted Rummel, who added that GMTRC will use about 10 volunteers to prepare for and carry out each of the six visits planned during the months of June and July. In 2022, more than 20 volunteers gave nearly 200 total hours to GMTRC during Aaron’s Acres’ visits. Aaron’s Acres also brings volunteers,

nearly 2,000 supporters.

“Our whole commencement is set up to be a solemnity, a solemnity meant to honor our seniors,” said Lancaster Catholic High School principal Terry Klugh. “Honoring is different than a celebration. Not everyone goes through an event that honors them. It’s kind of a quiet event that keeps the respect on the seniors. We’ve always had the focus on the students. It’s calling attention to their achievements, what they have done and what they’re about to do when they leave us.”

Upon their arrival, members of the LCHS Class of 2023 gathered outside the field house behind the away stands at the stadium. Once organized, the standard bearer, rising senior Mary Bolesky, led the procession of the Class of 2023 - girls on

one side and boys on the other - across the field to seats positioned near the home-side stands filled with relatives, alumni, administrators, members of the board of education, faculty memebers, local pastors and Dan Breen, the Diocese of Harrisburg’s secretary for education.

The formal portion of the ceremony began with an invocation, followed by the singing of the national anthem, the reading of the Class of 2023 poem, the presentation of the class for graduation and the awarding of diplomas. The event concluded with a benediction, the Lancaster Catholic alma mater and the traditional throwing of caps skyward.

Matthew Mercer was honored as valedictorian, and Rebekah Noel Cistay was recognized as salutatorian.

formal ceremony began with a 6:45 p.m. procession and concluded with the students turning the tassels of their caps and facing the audience around 8:40 p.m. Also featured during the lively ceremony were the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance,” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “My Companion,” and the Manheim Township alma mater; four student speeches from graduating seniors; presentations of awards and the senior class gift; and, of course,

the awarding of diplomas.

Daniel Wang was honored for achieving the highest GPA among the Manheim Township Class of 2023.

“To my family and friends, I wouldn’t be where I am today without your love and support,” said Wang. “To my teachers and counselor, I will always appreciate your wisdom and guidance. Last but not least, thank you to God for giving me everything I have today.”

them (the graduates), ‘It’s a high school diploma. You have achieved something great,’” said Klugh. “I would tell you from a Catholic point of view that commencement is a beginning. Faith is a journey. This truly is the beginning of the journey, and the journey continues. They continue to move toward goals, and they’re ready for taking on the rest of the journey.”

Lancaster Catholic also conducted an all-school, senior awards ceremony the day prior to commencement. During that event, the Class of 2023 was recognized for earning a total of $10.1 million in merit scholarships and for its 2,200 combined hours of service projects.

“If the Class of 2023 could be summed up in one word, that word would be ‘perseverance,’” said Klugh. “They’ve had to persevere through so

many interruptions along the way; their perseverance needed to deal with the adjustments, all the change. They’ve had to make sense of all of it and how it affects their lives.”

It’s a learned perseverance that will serve Lancaster Catholic’s Class of 2023 well in the real world.

commencement was attended by 147 members of the Manheim Township faculty, 11 members of the school district’s board of directors, six high school administrators, and two distinguished alumni. Nicole Schiffhauer served as the Class of 2023 adviser.

“It’s an excitement that slowly builds from the time the students arrive to the time the last person walks off the stage with their diploma,” said Rilatt. “It builds and builds and builds. It was a great celebration.”

“My favorite part is watching individuals who have developed grit and determination walk across the stage and receive their diplomas,” continued Rilatt. “It’s a celebration of their educational journey.”

Rilatt said that members of the Manheim Township Class of 2023 will attend four-year colleges or two-year institutions, enlist in the military, follow appointments to armed forces service academies or join the workforce.

Montessori students complete AI workshop, children’s books

Open Montessori, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hands-on educational experiences, has announced the completion of a five-day workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) and authorship for seventhand eighth-graders at New School Montessori in Lancaster.

The workshop, held from April 24 through 28, focused on how new generative tools, including ChatGPT and Midjourney, can be used in the creative process of writing and illustration. During the workshop, students tested a variety of AIenabled platforms and discussed how these technologies might impact their future academic and profes-

sional careers. Despite many concerns and unknowns about the implications of AI in society, the young students took an optimistic approach to the topic, exploring ways that A.I. might be incorporated into their creative workflow.

After studying the building blocks of good storytelling, each student authored and illustrated his or her own 24-page children’s book with the help of AI in just two days. The books were then printed and presented to friends and families at an open house on April 28.

Praising the students for their efforts were Bob Witmer, a representative from White Oak, which donated

its services to print all of the students’ books and book covers; Robyn Stearne, the head of school at New School Montessori; and Tim Austin, director of Open Montessori. For more information about Open Montessori and New School Montessori, visit www.openmontessori.org and www.newschool.net, respectively.
