Manheim Township

At MTHS Commencement, Class of 2025 Revels in the Moment

Time isn’t about quantity and how much you have of it. Time is about quality and what you do with it.

During a special moment in time, Manheim Township High School’s (MTHS) Class of 2025 took an opportunity to reflect on the importance of time.

That special occasion was MTHS’ 97th commencement ceremonies, which took place during the evening hours of June 5 at Calvary Church. Part of the celebration included speeches given by graduating seniors that addressed the nature of time.

Nathan Whitley spoke about seconds, Lillian Reaser presented her take on minutes and Andy Do and William Wang expounded upon hours. Then a few moments later, MTHS’ singing Troubadours performed a musical number titled “Let Time Be Your Friend.”

“What’s special about our ceremony is the student speakers at the beginning, and this year they focused on three elements of time,” said MTHS principal Dave

Rilatt. “With the help of advisers, the students drafted their own speeches. They worked hard on them.”

“The Class of 2025 has accomplished amazing things together,” added Rilatt. “But in the end, the confidence that they’ve built as they moved toward the finish line is what’s going to propel them to

becoming successful members of society.”

Other words of wisdom imparted on MTHS’ 482-member class of 2025 during the commencement exercise came from acting superintendent Dale Reimann, who implored the new graduates to “clean your room, find a mentor and say thank you” and to “be brief, be brilliant and be gone.” MTHS

assistant principal Lisa Lyons also had inspirational words for the young adults.

In addition, the 95-minute ceremony was marked by the presentation of the senior class gift, the certification of the Class of 2025 and Reimann’s formal acceptance of the class. The only award of the evening, the Manheim Township Lions Club’s prestigious Arthur Wetzler Award, was presented to Ellie Ngo, who achieved the highest grade point average in the class.

“I believe the role of education is to provide students with a strong educational foundation,” said Rilatt. “It helps them to develop grit. Students are going to fail, and that’s OK. But they’ve got to learn from that and develop grit to persevere. Education is important for developing our students and helping them become contributing members of our society.”

“I can’t believe we are finally graduating,” said class president

The Lancaster County Food Hub (LCFH) is the possessor of one fine title. But perhaps the organization should be called the Lancaster County Food, Clothing and Shelter Hub.

Despite its formal name, LCFH concerns itself with three of the five basic human needs. And because those needs in Lancaster County are great, that

makes the local nonprofit’s work even more important.

“We just haven’t changed our name yet,” said Paige McFarling, who’s been LCFH’s executive director for four years. “We’re getting there. I think it’s essential that we come up with a name that shows who we are and lets people know what we do.”

MTHS Commencement

For the graduates, that first Thursday in June was an evening of emotions, one filled with joy, gratitude, sentimentality and anticipation. As their names were called, the students walked across the stage, received their diplomas from the nine members of the district’s school board, turned and faced their family and friends, shifted their tassels from one side to the other and then tossed their caps high into the air.

“What moves me is ultimately the culmination of the event, the turning of their tassels,” said Rilatt. “It’s just a very, very special moment. When you see their family and friends cheering them on, that just gives me goosebumps. I believe commencement is a milestone event for celebrating their educational journey and launching them into the future, no matter what path they take.”

“When the students assem-

ble in (Calvary Church’s) gymnasium, even before they process, the excitement just builds,” Rilatt continued. “They realize this is the last time they will be together as a class, and there are tears because their journeys have been special. I do believe there are some nerves and jitters. But the smiles really tell you how joyous they are.”

The homes were judged by a panel of building and industry experts, with awards presented at the annual Parade of Homes Gala on June 13.

The inaugural MCg, which will be led by Kari Stauffer, will take place Monday, June 30, to Thursday, July 3. The application deadline is Monday, June 23. The boys’ excursion will be held Monday, Aug. 4, to Saturday, Aug. 9. The application deadline is Monday, July 21. Base camp for both trips will be set up in Halifax.

Each trip is limited to 12 participants, so everyone who applies is not ensured a spot. Forms are available at www.mountainconquerors .squarespace.com.

“Our job is to provide an experience for these kids that will last a lifetime and get them plugged in, if they’re not already plugged in, to a healthy structure,” said Kroll, who is the program’s coordinator and the leader of the boys’ camp. “Whether that’s church. Whether that’s a teen center. That’s the goal. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel of the structure.”

Staff members, who are all volunteers, will lead campers on practice hikes before taking a backpacking trip along the Black Forest Trail. “The whole premise of Mountain Conquerors is to build young (people) of character,” said Kroll, who is pastor of The Lord’s House of Prayer in Lancaster city. “We use the outdoors to facilitate the classroom.

Subjects we are really (focusing) on are character, potential, goal setting, teamwork, leadership skills, and overcoming fears.”

Justin Reed participated

Community Blood Drive

in Mountain Conquerors in 2020 and is now one of the trek’s leaders. “I learned skills and that you can overcome things with God helping you,” he said. “I had never experienced anything like that before.” Reed said he teaches younger hikers to embrace the things they can’t control and take on the challenges.”

Mountain Conquerors is designed to test one’s mindset. “You don’t know what character you have until you put it under pressure,” Kroll said. “Are you going to whine? Are you going to quit? You start hiking up a hill; your true character comes out. We’re good with that because now we have something to deal with.”

The pastor cited Galatians 5, which includes the allegory of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit and characteristics such as patience and kindness. “We’re looking at all those things, the staff included,” Kroll said. “We all need to grow, and we want to challenge each other and encourage each other and hold each other accountable. By changing your thinking and the words you speak, you can

change the outcome. The kids begin to overcome the obstacles they didn’t think they could ever overcome. These are life skills you can teach in a classroom but can’t experience unless you really do it.”

Mountain Conquerors camp provides challenges that test the mind and body. Traditionally, on the first day of the boys’ camp, participants are instructed to plant a flag after 90 minutes of hiking. The following day, campers get a workout on the ropes course before going on the same hike as the day before. They are challenged to beat their time from day one. “There’s never been a year where they haven’t beaten their mark,” said Kroll. At the end of the week, campers must trek one by one up a steep incline that Kroll refers to as Challenge Hill. Until that point, everything is done as a team. “It’s great to have a support network, but there are many times in life when it’s just you, your hurdle, and God,” Kroll said. “I’ve seen some amazing things in this camp. From the beginning to the end, the transformation of the kids is pretty cool.”

Lancaster County Food Hub

LCFH provides

services for county families and individuals in need. Serving with faith and compassion, LCFH distributes its services without asking questions and with few limitations.

Clients or neighbors are not required to show identification to receive services. LCFH does ask that clients receive food no more than once a calendar month and clothing no more than once every two months.

“We envision a Lancaster County where everyone lives a life of stability and dignity,” said McFarling. “We’re hoping to build relationships. Basic human needs are what it takes for us to survive. If I’m helping someone with food and clothing, I’m freeing them up for their rent payments. Rent eats first. And if they can make their rent, maybe they can go to the doctor.”

In 2024, more than 73,000 visitors received services from LCFH, about 56,000 of whom were food recipients. Many of those LCFH neighbors earn less than 180% of the federal poverty level, and about 60% of those who visit earn too much money to qualify for federal government subsidies.

“They’re individuals who cannot make ends meet,” said McFarling, a resident of Lititz. “We support hundreds of unsheltered neighbors each year. By and large, they’re Lancaster County residents, but we don’t turn away anyone who comes. We’re going to make sure you get what you need. You just walk in the door. We help them find resources in their areas of need.”

The need is profound, and the demand is growing.

In 2024, LCFH provided 28% more services than it did in the previous year. This year, LCFH is on pace to provide 45% more services than it did in 2024.

“For people who are heavily subsidized by government funding, it’s getting worse,” said McFarling. “Those living in poverty are struggling. This longterm economic uncertainty is leading to desperate times for our clients and neighbors.”

LCFH employs 10 staff members, some on a fulltime basis and others on a part-time one, and its work is supported by more than 100 active volunteers. Much of the nonprofit’s food and clothing are donated, and the organization is funded through grants and donations from

Square Dance Open Houses Posted

Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola, will host square dance open houses on Thursdays, June 26 and July 31, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The events will feature modern square dancing, which uses popular music and provides fitness for the mind and body. Ongoing square dancing classes will start in September.

There is a fee, and attendees may wear casual attire.

No partner or experience is required.

community members, churches, foundations and corporations.

“I get to live my values every day,” said McFarling. “I put great value in the idea that we can all stand in the community and be better. We can try to make things better for each other and we can do that lovingly, mercifully and with humility.”

LCFH was originally established in 1947 as the Lancaster County Council of Churches. The organization moved to its current location in 2014, and then, through a strategic planning inititative, was renamed in 2019.

“It started as a collection of churches that wanted to do a number of things,” said McFarling. “They thought they could do more in the community together

than alone. There were all denominations involved. Their first undertaking was the clothing bank, and out of that grew the food bank, and they started providing other services as well. As the council grew, they were relied upon by the community to be responsive. Food and clothing were always a need, and shelter. Over the years, the basic commitment to human needs has remained.”

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve worked very hard to get the name out and let people know who we are and what we do,” McFarling continued. “We’re probably (still) in the process of letting people know what they’ll find here when they come.”

NAWCC To Hold Annual Convention

The annual convention of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will be held at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York, from Thursday, June 19, to Saturday, June 21.

The event will feature almost 500 vendors selling horological items, including antique, vintage, and new watches and clocks; books; tools; and parts. The show will also include events such as lectures, mini workshops, a crafts competition, and the chance to explore the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia. The lectures and workshops are free to the public.

The show will kick off with a free tailgate event open to the public on June 19 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the York Expo Center arena parking lot. Vendors will offer a variety of vintage and antique clocks, watches, and horological tools for sale.

On Friday, June 20, a buy/sell/trade mart room will be open to NAWCC members in the York Expo Center arena. Those who are not part of the NAWCC may become members on-site that day.

Members may also participate in the live auction in the arena on the evening of June 20.

At the National Watch & Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, on June 20, the Bulova company will present a free screening of its documentary “America Telling Time: 150 Years of Bulova.” Bulova historian Carl Rosen and archivist Julie Loftus will be on hand to give tours of the new Bulova exhibit.

June 21 will be Public Day at the show, and members of the public will be admitted to the buy/sell/ trade mart room from noon to 4 p.m. for a fee.

The full schedule of the show’s events is available at https://natcon.nawcc.org.

Grave Concern Plans Meeting

Grave Concern will hold a quarterly public meeting with a program on Wednesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.
