efore you can teach students, you must first reach them. Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) has the curriculum, the forward thinking and the professors to challenge active minds. “People often know PCA&D as an art school, but what they may not realize is how deeply connected we are to workforce development, community partnerships and the regional economy,” said PCA&D president Andy Barnes. “Our graduates work across industries because creative thinking is valuable everywhere. Employers increasingly need people who can communicate visually, solve problems collaboratively and think innovatively. We’re also proud to be an active partner in downtown Lancaster. PCA&D contributes to the city’s cultural energy, supports local organizations and

Prince St., L ancaster, offers eight undergraduate degree programs, as well as continuing education opportunities and certificates in a wide array of design, art and creative disciplines. This fall, the college will be offering a

new course in creative writing. “Education helps people develop not just knowledge, but perspective,” said Barnes. “It teaches us how to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with others and adapt to change. Creative education is especially important right now because society increasingly needs people who can innovate, connect ideas and bring humanity into complex challenges. In an See PCA&D pg 2

Chris Krichten is bright, experienced and conscientious. But perhaps the biggest thing he’s got going for him is that he conducts himself as a true professional. Krichten is the kind of employee Manheim Township residents want working for them. “I have spent my entire adult life in the fire services and most of that time in EMS (emergency medical services),” said Krichten. “I have served in numerous fire and

EMS leadership roles and bring extensive experience leading large and complex organizations. I hope people see that I am a dedicated servant leader who is committed to serving the community and leading a team that will provide excellent service to Manheim Township.” Krichten is one of the newest employees of Manheim Township Fire Rescue (MTFR). He’s been in his new role as assistant fire chief of EMS, an executive-level officer within MTFR, for about three months now. See Chris Krichten pg 8

Supporting Empowering Lives Foundation (SELF) is holding a bingo fundraiser at the Millersville VFW Post 7294 on Sunday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The post, located at 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, will host the newly formed nonprofit’s first fundraising event. SELF, formed last summer as the offshoot of another, nowdefunct disabilities group, aims to help anyone with a disability live an independent life. According to the group’s website, its mission is “to serve clients with disabilities by identifying and addressing the gaps in support, resources and advocacy - picking the pieces so no one falls through the gaps.” The event will consist of 10 normal bingo games, with the winner getting to pick a gift card prize. There will then be special games of bingo and a Chinese auction for some of the larger prizes, as well as a 50-50 drawing. The prizes, all of which have been donated by local businesses and community members, include tickets to Hershey Gardens, the Reading Royals, Reading Fightin Phils, Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Sight & Sound and more. There will also be a food truck at the event, and desserts will be for sale. “We are very excited,” said Jacki Nagle, the group’s chief executive officer. “We are very fortunate to have a community behind us ... we have the entire community coming together to support us.”
