Taking Off Wheels And Wings Festival Scheduled
otary Club of Lancaster member Stephen Dietrich, one of the organizers of the 2022 Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K, hopes the Coffee Cruise, a new addition to this year’s activities, will attract vintage car owners who like to get their cars out on the road. “(The Coffee Cruise) will be held at the same time as the 5K (run),” explained Dietrich, who noted that the cruise will start at 7:30 a.m., following coffee and doughnuts. “It will be really fun,” he said, adding that a repair trailer will ride along in case any car develops engine issues. The route for the cruise was created by Michael Rowen of Michael’s Motor Cars. There is a discount for those who register prior to the show. This year’s festival, which will be the fifth, will be held at the Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road,

Lititz, on Saturday, June 25. Day-of registration for the 5K run will start at 6:30 a.m. across the street from the airport at Brethren Village. The event will include two helicopters offering rides for purchase, and a flying rebuilt Huey helicopter from the Vietnam era will be on-site. Activities for children are planned, along with a fly-in, and the “Everything Wheels” car show will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. A DJ will spin tunes throughout the event, which will be held rain or shine. There will be no charge for spectators to come and enjoy the day. Parking will be provided by suggested donation. Runners who register for the 5K prior to Friday, June 17, will receive a discount. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in six age categories. Those wishing to register prior to race day may visit https://runsignup.com and search for “Lititz.”

More than a year ago, when Pritesh Tanna was a sophomore in teacher Tammy Sweeney’s Advaced Placement World History class at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), he heard an advertisement on WITF radio. “I heard that I could nominate a teacher (for an award) through WITF,” recalled Tanna. “I really wanted to do that, so I talked to my parents.” Tanna’s parents agreed. In the fall of 2021, when he heard the announcement again, he went to the WITF website and completed the See Impact Award pg 3

Caring Hearts and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Sunny Sunbeam, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials give a total of more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bring-something, buy-something auction. The 16th annual will be held on Monday, July 4, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. According to organizers, highlights of this year’s auction will include items such as a carriage, a volleyball set, a grill, a Breeo fire pit, a flag croquet set, and a scooter. Large specialty items will be sold at 6 p.m. Swing sets and sheds will be sold, and a 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Caring Hearts has a special connection to the auction because cross-stitched quilts made there will be sold at 4 p.m. Head teacher Anna Stoltzfus explained that the

The trip, which was not affiliated with MTHS, was focused on educating students. “The trip to Thailand was going to happen, but they are experiencing supply chain issues and worker shortages,” explained Sweeney. “Logistically, it was not going to work.” Instead, Sweeney has
arranged for 24 students to visit the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon Rainforest beginning on Wednesday, June 22. “The focus will be on environmental conservation,” said Sweeney, who noted that students will visit a giant tortoise sanctuary as well as seeing them in the wild and visiting a breeding program. Tanna noted that he has been reading about the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. “In the Amazon, we will visit Kichwa community, an indigenous village, where traditional ways of life persist,” said Sweeney. “We will work directly with village shamans to learn about traditional medicines,” she added, noting that the roots of many types of medications are found in that area. On May 24, a reception was held for Teacher Impact Award winners at WITF studios in Harrisburg. “(WITF
staff) came by and videotaped the class and interviewed both of us,” said Sweeney, who noted a television special would be compiled from the footage. Sweeney was excited to learn that the award included funds that she could use to purchase classroom materials.

Family Farm Days To Return After a two-year absence, Family Farm Days at The Farmstead at Oregon Dairy is returning. The event began on June 14 and will continue on Wednesday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Lancaster County Agriculture Council, Oregon Dairy, and other entities, Family Farm Days offers a first-hand experience at a working farm. The event’s goal is to help people who do not live on farms to get a better idea of where their food comes from. Oregon Dairy will offer free samples of its chocolate milk and white milk and its chocolate or vanilla ice cream. Kunzler will sell hot dogs and drinks at the farm. Peters’ BBQ will provide chicken barbecue takeout dinners for purchase from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Activities will include free guided tractor and wagon ride tours to and from the farm, Barnyard Theatre presentations and “A Day in the Life of a Cow.” Farm equipment will be on display as well as exhibits from all over Lancaster County. Attendees may also explore the Pennsylvania WoodMobile or visit “The AquaJack” Mobile Aquaponics Lab. Kids can enjoy a straw tunnel and go on a scavenger hunt, sponsored by Lancaster County 4-H Club; each participant will receive a prize. Tanna asked his father to check over his completed application and submitted it to the competition. In April, Sweeney received an email congratuating her for being named a Teacher Impact Award winner. She searched the email in vain for the name of the person who had nominated her. “I wondered if I would find out,” she recalled. A few weeks later, Sweeney received another email. This one contained Tanna’s name and an excerpt from his nomination, which read in part, “Ms. Sweeney … takes so much personal interest in each of the students and is incredibly engaged and involved in the school.” “It was very humbling and very nice,” said Sweeney of Tanna’s nomination. “It was

The dog program at the pet pantry is 100% foster-based. Dogs do not live in kennels; they are placed in homes. However, this method means that the organization can only save as many dogs as it has foster families to place them with. Throughout June, Petco Love will work with its network of partners nationwide to share the fun aspects of fostering while helping pet parents get through their foster pet goodbyes. Petco Love is taking a humorous approach to saying goodbye to foster pets by holding a #MyFosterBreakUp story contest featuring Foster Breakup Kits giveaways and a curated playlist to help foster pet parents through their goodbyes. Matt noted that while the new facility will need to fundraise, response to the growth of the ministry has been positive. “The reception has been amazing,” he said. “(There has been an) outpouring of people who have been financially supportive and (willing to) to volunteer.”

House of His Creation (HOHC) is a ministry that has worked for nearly 50 years to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. HOHC currently oversees a maternity home at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. The ministry will soon be expanding its reach by opening a new home in Pensacola, Fla., that will offer a safe haven to teenage girls who have been victims of human trafficking. “We are not rescuing. We are protecting,” said Matthew Neff, director of HOHC. In 2018, when the ministry was briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), its location at the Abundant Living Ministries campus in northern Lititz was being used for dual purposes. “We made the decision pre-COVID to just use the apartments (at the campus) for ministry,” said Matt, who noted that the apartments filled quickly with women leaving abusive situations. The location was good for that purpose, but for the women living in the adjacent maternity home who needed transportation for employment, training, and other services, it was less than ideal. To remedy the situation, HOHC relocated to Lititz and began exploring ways it could help women escaping abuse or human trafficking. HOHC staff members discovered that in Florida, they could provide a safe, healing environment for teenagers. Now, house parents Matt and his wife, Callie, are preparing to move to the new

Camera Club To Exhibit Photos The spring art exhibit at Crossings Gallery on the campus of Landis Homes will feature the photographs of eight members of the Lancaster Camera Club. Crossings Gallery is located in the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The exhibit will be on display through June from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Sundays. At the Stoner Award ceremony, the Wilsons were given a painting by Mary Lou. The Douglases have been involved with the ODC since 1990 when their son, Kirk, became a participant. During her family’s involvement with ODC, Jennifer has been active in the organization’s day-to-day activities, particularly the Parents Group. In recent years, she has headed up the Parents Group and has served on the ODC board of directors. Kirk continues to participate in ODC programs. Jennifer Douglas was presented with a painting by Vince. Wile Plumbing is a local,
second-generation, familyowned business that has been a part of the ODC community for a number of years. Initially, the business, now run by Jon and Becky Wile, helped with various building-related needs. A few years ago, Jon was invited to become a member of the board of directors. Shortly after that, he discovered that his Aunt Joanne, who had an intellectual disability, was one of the first four students at the Child Development Center, the predecessor to the ODC. A Woman’s Concern (AWC) Pregnancy and Parenting Resource Center, 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, marks 50 years of service in the Lancaster community this year. Founded in 1972, the organization has provided services to more than 20,000 women, men, and families over the past five decades. AWC kicked off a year of 50th anniversary festivities by hosting a celebration event at Lancaster Bible College on April 20. Additional events to highlight the center’s anniversary are planned throughout the year, including Diaper Day, a free diaper giveaway event for families, this summer, plus the annual fall gala for supporters and a giveaway drawing for a car. “It’s different and a novelty, and we are hoping that people can enjoy it even if they don’t understand German. Music is a universal language,” said Linda Husler, president of the Lancaster Liederkranz chorus, when describing the upcoming concert event that the chorus will host on Saturday, June 18, at 3 p.m. at Centerville Middle School, 865 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The concert, which will feature German choruses from throughout the northeastern area of the United States, is being presented by the Nordöstlicher Sängerbund (NOSB), also known as the Northeastern Sängerbund of America. The event will be the 53rd NOSB Sängerfest, which is the German word for a singing festival. “The last (Sängerfest) was in 2018 in the Philadelphia area at a German club. It’s a festival that is held every two to three years,” explained Husler. “We were supposed to host in 2020, but COVID shut it down.” She noted that the concert was also canceled in 2021 because of the pandemic and that the next event will rotate to a different German club. For this year, seven choruses will perform individually and then combine for the finale, which will conclude with a performance of “God Bless America” in English. “There are going to be seven German choruses represented that will be singing individually. They will each do a 15-minute
