Manheim Township

At Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS), commencement is treated like a sendoff. Graduates are encouraged to go forth, apply the knowledge they have learned and do great things.
During the morning hours of May 20, LCDS conducted its 115th commencement at Gardner Theatre
on its 29-acre campus in Manheim Township. More than 50 members of the Class of 2023 accepted their high school diplomas in an exciting and emotional ceremony.
“The mere name ‘commencement’ suggests a beginning,” said Matt Micciche, LCDS head of school. “We absolutely think of it as a student’s first step beyond their time here with us. We feel like it’s setting them up for lives of purpose, lives of giving back. I think of it as more of a beginning than an end, because we want their relationships with us to continue into the future.”
“There’s really a sense of journey, of this being a milepost on a lifelong journey,” continued Micciche. “If we’ve done our jobs as educators well, they’re heading out into the world as people who never want to stop learning.”
With about 500 people in attendance - family,
W hen there’s much work to be done, it can be overwhelming, and it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of the work that has already been performed. That’s why it’s important to periodically take a step back, take stock and celebrate progress.
Hope. Inspire. Love. is celebrating seven years of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation. But in no way does that mean that the faith-centered nonprofit is satisfied or that its mission is complete.
On Saturday, June 24, at the
Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, Hope. Inspire. Love. will present its inaugural Hope for Freedom Gala. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the gala program will commence at 6 p.m.
W hile the festive atmosphere promises to assure attendees a good time, the Hope for Freedom Gala will also serve as an educational tool for Hope. Inspire. Love.’s mission and the depth of the human trafficking problem locally.
“It’s a fundraiser to share and celebrate the work that’s already been done,” said Amy Thurston, CEO and See Freedom Gala pg 5
friends, well-wishers, alumni, underclassmen and friends of the school - Lancaster Country Day’s graduation ceremony was completed in just over an hour. Members of the faculty and administration showed the way as the seniors processed into Gardner Theatre after gathering in the gymnasium across
the hallway.
The graduates were seated on risers on the theater’s stage, from which they enjoyed speeches from staff and students and the announcements of awards. After each student was celebrated with his or her own special moment on stage, the graduates recessed to a
modest reception in the gym.
“Our goal with commencement is for it to be a celebration of the students,” said Micciche. “It’s a culmination of the Lancaster Country Day experience, and some of the students have been with us for 14 or 15 years. For their families, it’s a rite of passage.”

More than some complex theory or fancy equation, science is a living, breathing application that helps us understand the world around us and how all of its moving parts interact.
At 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, science is manfactured, produced, nurtured. But it is also prodded, played with and learned.
This haven for experimentation is called the Lancaster Science Factory.
Housed in a repurposed industrial
building, the Lancaster Science Factory is an interactive, hands-on center designed to spark an interest in science for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families.
“Science is everything. It’s everywhere,” said Amanda Bakay, Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “It is the stuff that makes the world work. It’s about being curious and asking questions about the world around you. That’s what we’re doing here - letting kids discover science.”
See Science Factory pg 2
The Lancaster Science Factory is 17,000 square feet of 65 engaging exhibits that fall into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) category. Those exhibits specifically target areas of mechanics and motion, structural engineering, fluid dynamics, light and vision, acoustics, electricity, math and robotics and sustainable energy, just to name a few. The main exhibit hall is supported outside by a 4,000square-foot, three-season
courtyard. But the Lancaster Science Factory also hosts classes, workshops, after-school programs, summer camps and social events.
“We actively seek to make our programs accessible to everyone,” said Bakay. “The hook is that everything’s handson. I love seeing kids being super curious. It’s a really cool space, and the secret is that all of the stuff is fun for adults as well.”
In 2022, the Lancaster Science Factory hosted 50,000 guests, and Bakay estimated that number will rise to 60,000 this year. She also said that about a third of those visitors can be attributed to tourism, a third have resulted from school field trips and a third were local residents.
Lancaster Science Factory’s work is funded through admission fees, retail sales from its gift shop and donations from individuals and foundations.
The museum staff is made up of 10 full-time employees.
“We’ve been working hard to build the brand of the Lancaster Science Factory and make it a place to come,” said Bakay. “It’s truly a place for the community. It’s an asset for the community to take advantage of. It’s a resource.”
Through the inspiration of founder and former local advertising executive Jim Bunting, the Lancaster Science Factory opened in 2008. The opening was financed through a $1 million capital campaign and supported by the work of volunteers. In 2019, the museum doubled the size of its exhibition hall.
“We’re still relatively young,” said Bakay. “When he was a kid, our founder, Jim Bunting, wished he had a place like this to help him learn. Over the years, our programming has grown a lot. We’ve added programs because that’s the demand we’ve been seeing.”

Lancaster Catholic High School’s Dominick Baksh and McCaskey High School’s Kai Unwin-Wisnosky participated in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in May in Dallas. While neither student captured the grand prize, each still walked away with something valuable: for Dominick, the interest and support of a judge who wants to mentor him and see his work published, and for Kai, the
opportunity for collaboration on an international level.
Ninth-grade student Kai and 10th-grader Dominick won the Grand Champion and Senior Division Champion titles, respectively, at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair held in March. They traveled to Dallas to compete among high school students from over 60 countries and six continents, presenting their projects to judges
during a weeklong competition from May 13 to 19.
Dominick’s study of investigating molecular subtypes of endometrial cancer, titled “Immune Checkpoint Regulation in Molecular Subtypes of Endometrial CancerExpression of PD-L1/PD1,” caught the eye of Dr. Asha Pillai, chair of hematology at Regeneron, who is a former ISEF finalist and heads up the Biomedical Sciences portion of the judging. She invited Dominick to a Boston symposium she is chairing for mentoring and encouraged him to publish his work.
Dominick will attend the Cancer Immunity and Immunotherapy symposium in June.
Kai’s project, titled “Which Savonius VerticalAxis Wind Turbine Setup Is More Efficient: One With a Wind Deflector or One Without,” spurred interactions for future collaborations with colleagues from the U.S. as well as Egypt,
Haiti and Zimbabwe. Kai noted that he was able to connect with fellow contestants and representatives of colleges and companies.
Both students also received accolades from the U.S. Department of the Air Force and North Carolina State University for their projects.
The expenses for the trip to Dallas were paid by the North Museum through the support of sponsors.
Sponsorships for the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair are available by contacting Scott Downs, director of development and strategic partnerships, at sdowns@north museum.org.
Lancaster Country Day exists to prepare students for matriculation to higher education institutions, from large state universities to small private colleges and everything in between. Nearly all members of LCDS’ Class of 2023 plan to begin pursuit of a college degree in the fall.
“I think the greatest emotion being felt was pride, pride in how far these students have come,” said Micciche. “That is one of the greatest joys in education: You get to see students grow up right before your very eyes. There’s also a sense of teamwork, because we’ve part-
nered with them to get to this point. It’s a real pleasure and privilege to be part of this moment with these wonderful young people.”
Micciche is in his first year as the head of school at LCDS, and the Class of 2023 will always occupy a certain spot in his heart.
“They’ll always be special to me because they’re my first senior class at LCDS,” said Micciche. “They helped me get to know the community. They gave me insight into the student experience. What I learned is how deeply they value their community.”
The Lancaster County Disc Golf Club (LCDGC) upgraded nine of the pads on the disc golf course at Roland Park in Akron to prevent slipping. Previously made of rubber, the pads are now made of concrete with a brush finish. The club will complete the final nine pads in the next few months.
Proceeds from the New Year’s Day Doubles Tournament were the primary source of funds for the project. The new pads should last for 10 to 15 years.

Disc golf is a free activity that enables people of all ages to have fun and spend time in open spaces. Similar to regular golf, disc golf involves trying to throw a disc into a bas-
ket in the least number of throws possible. LCDGC members enjoy Thursday night leagues and tournaments on a weekly basis. In addition, the course at Roland Park is used by casual players.
In Akron, leagues meet for rounds on Thursday nights, when they compete for scores and ratings. On weekends, tournaments are held all over Pennsylvania, with six scheduled in Akron. There are eight courses in Lancaster County.
LCDGC is preparing for the Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championship, which will be held on Friday, Aug. 4, through Sunday, Aug. 6.

The festival will begin with the 5K race at 7:30 a.m. The lightly traveled race route is entirely on the roads of the 5K host sponsor, Brethren Village. Medals will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in six age
categories, with registered participants receiving a race T-shirt.
The “everything on wheels” car show, sponsored by Boyd Wilson, and the fly-in will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Pre-Show Coffee Cruise - a self-guided cruise designed by Michael Rowen of Michael’s Motor Cars - will depart at 7:30 a.m. Show trophies will be awarded, as well as numerous door prizes.
New this year, the festival’s airshow will include a World War II-era warbirds showcase, with rides provided by the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and sponsored by Liberty Financial Strategies. Advance reservations are recommended and can be booked at
The festival will also feature food trucks, participation of Big Dog Craft Brewing, music by Baker Event Company, inflatable obstacle and bounce houses and giveaway drawing prizes.
The event is free, and no registration is required for spectators. On-site parking will be available for a fee. To register for the 5K and for event tickets, visit www. lancasterrotary.org/wheels -wings-and-5k/.
The festival is the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s primary annual fundraiser, and proceeds go toward the Summer Youth Experience. Funded in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, this sum-
mer program supports more than 2,600 city youths ages 5 to 16. The program encourages students’ summer acceleration through project-based learning, social-emotional development and out-ofschool environments. The programs are structured to help Lancaster youths learn and grow through enrichment, including opportunities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL) will host its second annual Pop-Up Silent Auction from Monday, June 19, to Saturday, July 1. The auction will not only showcase what Lancaster County has to offer, but it will also support the library and its services and programs.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. on June 19, when
interested parties will need a bid number to participate. To receive a bid number, visit the Circulation Desk at the library, located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, or visit https:// mtpl.info/popup-silent -auction.
Last year, the Manheim Township Public Library raised $4,500 in its inaugural silent auction. MTPL
staff members are looking to surpass that goal and reach $5,000. Fifty items will be available for bidding, including custom-designed quilts and artwork, local entertainment, a ride to school on a fire truck and a chocolate gift basket.
Bidding for all items closes at noon on July 1. Winning bidders will be notified by email on July 1.
president of Hope. Inspire. Love. “People in our community have heard about our work, and they’re supporting the mission. Local businesses see the work we’re doing, and they want to get behind it. It makes this event more special.”
The Hope for Freedom Gala will feature hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, live music, a spoken word performance and a live painting of an artist’s interpretation of hope, as well as dinner.
Thurston said that over 100 supporters have already registered for the event and that Hope. Inspire. Love. is hoping for another 100 attendees.
The goal is to raise $35,000 in donations to provide trauma-informed mentorship to survivors of sex trafficking, prevention and education initiatives and outreach and awareness events.
“Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit,” said Thurston. “There’s labor trafficking and
sex trafficking. It involves deceptions and lies and physical violence. It’s that control and manipulation piece.”
Thurston said that human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the United States and that it generates an estimated $150.2 billion annually. She also said Pennsylvania reported the 15th-most human trafficking cases among states in the country last year.
“It’s a larger problem than people realize,” said Thurston.
“Lancaster has one of the highest rates of reported trafficking. We don’t know the signs and what this thing looks like. It affects more women than men, and a lot of women don’t self-identify because they don’t realize what it is.”
Founded in 2017, Hope. Inspire. Love. combats human trafficking and sexual exploitation through awareness, preventative education and mentorship. In addition to Lancaster County, Hope.
Inspire. Love. operates in Philadelphia, Norristown, Reading, York and Lebanon.
“Our organization exists because of a train ride to Philadelphia,” said Thurston.
“My husband, (Steve), saw a younger woman with an older man. As he began to observe them, he could tell it wasn’t a father-daughter relationship.
When he looked into her eyes, he saw her darkness. The gentleman saw (him watching), grabbed her and took her off the train. My husband froze and didn’t do anything.”
“But when he came home and told me what he saw, he said he couldn’t do nothing,” continued Thurston. “William Wilberforce said, ‘You can
choose to look the other way, but never again can you say that you never knew.’”

BY CATHY MOLITORISDuring the pandemic, Robyn Black picked up a new hobby. She became a ham radio operator, talking to people around the country and the world. “It’s just fun,” she said, noting that her sister, Amanda Black, also earned a ham radio license. Now Robyn’s encouraging others to learn more about the hobby at the 2023 Summer Field Day.
The event will take place on the grounds of the Southern Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (SPARC), 1715 Breneman Road, Manheim. It will run from Saturday, June 24, through Sunday, June 25.
Robyn noted that events will be happening from noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday, but ham radio operators will be on-site all weekend long.
“People sleep over,” she stated.
“They stay for the whole time.”
The field day is designed to be
a sort of open house for ham radio, with various stations set up to showcase different forms of communication. “We’ll have some guys with a station for CW, which is Morse code,”
Robyn remarked. “We’ll have different stations, and you can get on the radio with a licensed operator. You may even be able to reach people in other countries.” A variety of food, including hamburgers and hot dogs, will be available during the event.
Ham radio allows users to talk with other people without the internet or cell service. “It’s designed to be an emergency media in case the electricity goes out or the grid goes down and there’s no other means of communication,” Robyn explained. “You don’t wish for an emergency to happen, but when it does, you’ve got to be prepared. Ham radio operators practice. We play on our radios to make sure they are up to
snuff and they’re going to work when the need arises.”
For Robyn, ham radio has offered a way to make new friends. “I love talking to other people,” she noted, adding that she needs nine more states to reach people in all 50. She also participates with the Parks on the Air program, reaching out to operators in state parks across the country.
During the field day in Manheim, similar events will be happening throughout North America, with more than
40,000 temporary transmitting stations set up in public places to demonstrate how ham radio works. Field day has been organized by the American Radio Relay League since 1933.
Robyn hopes people will come to the Manheim field day to see ham radio firsthand and perhaps discover a new hobby. “Come for the fun. Come to witness the emergency practice and come for the conversation,” she said. “We want to encourage more people to try this hobby and keep it alive.”
