60 Years Of Music And Art Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation Celebrates 60 Years

“Today we rededicate this beautiful amphitheater that was built in 1962,” said Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) summer music committee series and board member Tony Kirchner as he welcomed more than 50 attendees to the LPAF rededication of the amphitheater on May 26. The rededication took place exactly 60 years after the amphitheater became a fixture at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. “We are able to do what we do because of your dedication and commitment to our mission,” Kirchner told the gathering, singling out Wickersham Construction and WGAL for their sponsorship from the beginning. He noted that Sundays during the summer through Aug. 28 will be marked by the presence of national and international

recording artists on the stage. Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace spoke following Kirchner. She recognized former mayors Charlie Smithgall and Art Morris, both in attendance. “This institution … is a labor of love that has been happening for 60 years,” said Sorace, who also recognized LPAF board members. Dave Wauls, past LPAF president had created a trivia quiz about the amphitheater for attendees to complete. Using true and false questions, he queried guests about the entertainers who have performed there - no Ricky Martin, but Arlo Guthrie and his daughter made an appearance. Wauls also entertained with ice breakers that involved sharing memories of concerts. Tom Ellis, interim president of LPAF, spoke about the history of the amphitheater, starting in 1957. “The iconic structure was a vision

getting ready to be fulfilled,” he said of the amphitheater, pointing out that Armstrong created the roof of the structure, which only needed its first repairs this year. He noted that the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. In 1962, the iconic building opened for its first summer with the New Holland Band on the roster, along with a number of individuals and celebrity acts” Ellis pointed out that the park hosts up to 6,000 guests at most concerts with 30,000 attendees at concerts that feature fireworks. Smithgall’s cannons were part of those presentations for 35 years. Ellis added that Pat Boone, Emmett Kelly Jr., and Red Skelton have all performed at the park. In 1979, the Arts and Crafts Festival, as it was called then,

became a fundraiser. “It remains the single biggest contributor and one of the top art festivals on the Eastern Seaboard,” said Ellis. Father and son team Richard and Rick Faulkner kicked off that first festival. Rick was present at the rededication and received a round of applause from the group. Last year, 200 volunteers participated in organizing and running the art festival, but the organization can always use more helpers. Ellis pointed out that board members are volunteers. “All of this is a community service,” he said. “We are grateful for the entire board.” LPAF board member Janice Henry spoke about upcoming events and fundraisers the organization has planned, and Kirchner closed the event. On June 2, three winners of the Manheim Township Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award were honored at a breakfast reception held at the Eden Resort. Recipients of the 2022 award were Darla Bair, Class of 1970; Edward F. Gallagher, Class of 1977; and Karen M. Rice (Huber), Class of 1988. Bair served as co-editor of her senior yearbook. She was a member of the school choir, and National Honor Society, and she was selected for County Chorus. Bair attended Millersville University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in music education in 1974. She earned a master’s degree in interdisciplinary arts for children from The College at Brockport in 1999. Bair taught in Rochester, N.Y., where she founded the Amadeus Chorale, a youth choral group, in 1996. In 2015, she was ordained an interfaith minister and formed the Calm in the Chaos Interfaith Center in Brockport, N.Y. She recently returned to live in Lancaster after living in New York state for more than 40 years.

Gallagher participated in basketball, soccer, and Key Club at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), and he volunteered with the Manheim Township Ambulance Association and served as a student police officer with the Manheim Township Police Department. He studied criminology, political science, and Spanish at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, graduating magna cum laude in 1982. He earned his law degree from Villanova University in 1985 and is licensed to practice law in Texas and Pennsylvania. Gallagher moved to Houston in 1985 to serve as an FBI special agent. Since 1990, he has been with the U.S. Attorney’s Office serving as an assistant U.S. attorney. He is now a federal prosecutor with

the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas in Houston. Having served as chief of the Organized Crime Strike Force and chief of the Major Offenders Division, Gallagher is currently a prosecutor in the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. Gallagher has been recognized by the Drug Enforcement Administration for contributions in drug law enforcement and by the Department of Homeland Security for support of human smuggling and trafficking prosecutions. Rice is a professor in Millersville University’s School of Social Work. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Millersville University, a Master of Social Work from Temple University, and a doc-

torate from the School of Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She joined the Millersville University faculty as a full professor of social work in 2021. Rice has been a leader in the development and implementation of Millersville University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategic plan. In 2022, she was appointed as the inaugural faculty fellow for the Office of Diversity and Social Justice. Rice is a recipient of Millersville University’s Vanguard Award for support of students transitioning to college and a three-time nominee for Millersville University Educator of the Year. Organist Karl E. Moyer will present a birthday concert on Thursday, June 16, in gratitude to God for 85 years of life. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Moyer, Professor of Music Emeritus at Millerville University, will play masterpieces by Bach and the French Romantic composers Widor, César Franck, and Maurice Duruflé, along with shorter works by Beethoven, Brahms, and others. Moyer spent most of his professional life on the music faculty of Millersville University, teaching music history, organ, and sometimes hymnody. He concurrently served several Lutheran churches in Lancaster and was a founding member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. In retirement, he plays the organ at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Marietta, where he played a program of organ music in June 1950, 72 years ago. He holds degrees from Lebanon Valley College, the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and Temple University. He earned a doctorate from Eastman School of Music in organ performance and church music. He is also a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists (F.A.G.O.), the highest certificate possible from that national group. Moyer has composed descants for two congregational hymns to be sung at his birthday concert. Sopranos and tenors in the audience will be invited to sight-read them from the printed program. Admission is free. Parking is available in the church lot on the opposite side of East Orange Street, with the lot entrance on North Ann Street between East King and East Orange streets. Early arrival is recommended.

Farmers Market Vouchers Available In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2022 Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible persons in June at local senior centers. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvaniagrown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least age 60, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $25,142 for one

person or less than $33,874 for two people. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. Persons unable to pick up the vouchers may have a representative pick up vouchers on their behalf, but a completed, signed application form will need to be presented at the time of distribution. Water Street Mission, a resource to restore individuals and families experiencing homelessness, recently announced the reopening of Providence Day Shelter for guests in its emergency overnight shelter. Providence Day Shelter is the latest building to be remodeled with the goal of restoring dignity and healing to those in need. This project comes at the end of a six-year renovation cycle, which saw the upgrade of all of Water Street’s facilities for those coming off the street. In 2016, the mission completed a seven-day Mission Makeover of its dining room and kitchen. This was followed by a 2019 unveiling of Providence Emergency Shelter, offering a safe haven for guests in need of overnight shelter. The Access Center renovation was also completed during this time, offering concierge service to welcome first-time guests seeking help. The newly renovated space, with a coffeehouse feel, offers a safe place during the day for guests to access resources, counseling, housing information, and financial services, and to be rejuvenated so they can focus on getting back on their feet. The Day Shelter was scheduled to officially open to Water Street guests in early April. Working with Heck Construction, Water Street Mission transformed the 7000square-foot building to create a more welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The formerly open floor plan now boasts one main gathering space, surrounded by smaller rooms for meeting spaces to allow guests to speak privately with case managers, liaisons, counselors, and pastors. The outdated furnishings have been replaced with smaller tables as well as chairs and new sound and video equipment. Providence Day Shelter also offers a conference room for local community partners to meet with guests on-site. Additionally, the men’s and women’s bathrooms have been remodeled to provide singleuse bathrooms so guests have complete privacy. New windows, surfaces, and materials are designed to make the entire facility easy to maintain and clean. The new, durable facility is intended to take the
