Manheim Township

Theyear was 1972. Richard Milhouse Nixon was in the White House, the Oakland A’s were on the way to their first World Series title since 1930 and the average price of gas was 36 cents per gallon.

And in a small community in Manheim Township, Lynne Shively, an elementary school teacher and a member of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, was founding a small preschool program at the church, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster.

A lot has changed with the world since, as well as with the Lancaster Brethren Preschool. But because the early education program always stayed true to its mission, it has helped nurture important developmental years of hundreds of Manheim Township residents.

The Lancaster Brethren Preschool recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. There was food and fellowship and reminiscing as current teachers, former teachers, former students and their families marked the milestone occasion.

“She was a teacher, and it became a passion project for her,” said Lancaster Brethren Preschool director Jessica Steinman of Shively. “She wanted to offer the community a preschool for the children in surrounding neighborhoods. It was hard to get the word out, and there were very few children at first. But the word has spread.”

“If you stop and think how many children’s lives that have been affected over the years, it’s amazing,” she added. “ We have parents go through the school and say they went here and that they want their children to go here.”

Not a religious program, the Lancaster Brethren Preschool is designed to provide a head start on learning for 2- through 5-year-olds. Currently, 68 little residents attend the

preschool, and enrollment for the next academic year is maxed out again, with 15 prospective students on a waiting list.

The Lancaster Brethren Prechool curriculum, which is based on learning through play, is taught by a staff of 15 certified teachers and assistants.

“It (the preschool) has a very neighborhood feeling,” said Steinman. “The biggest part of our mission is that we believe kids learn best through play. We’re part of a learning collective in Manheim Township, and kindergarten teachers tell us what they really want children to come to kindergarten with. We want children to love

school. We want to make it fun and interesting to them.”

Over the last half-century, society has seen a shift in the emphasis on early education. The Lancaster Brethren Preschool has continued to evolve to meet that need.

“Over the years, we’ve extended the days and hours kids can come,” said Steinman. “We’ve added different kinds of classes. We have expanded our class offerings. When Manheim Township (School District) went to full-day kindergarten, we made full-day preschool an option, from two-and-a-half hours to five.”

“I really feel like kiddos who go to preschool, even day care, are better prepared for elementary school,” concluded Steinman. “Since you and I have gone to kindergarten, things have changed. The demands of kindergarten have changed, and I think parents have recognized that.”

Something wonderful happens when volunteers put their faith into practice and help others.

At Love In the Name of Christ (INC) of Lancaster County, people do this through “the compassion projects.”

“Part of what we believe is that God calls us to live out our faith and serve,” said Katie Leaman, the

Lancaster Brethren Preschool celebrates 50 years of head starts With compassion projects, Love INC seeks to build stronger communities Flag football just for fun

Teresa Wiedemer, who coordinates the Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for United Disability Services (UDS), can sum up the goal of the program in one sentence. “It’s a great way for kids with disabilities to meet other kids (with disabilities),” she said. Wiedemer, who took over the program in 2022, recalled the story of a young man who joined the flag football league last year. “In the beginning, the boy didn’t realize how active it was,” said Wiedemer. “He would play a few minutes and then sit

communications and donor development director for Love INC of Lancaster County. “We provide resources and opportunities to serve, and we’re able to help the community by listening to their needs. Our goal is to help people with financial needs remain in their homes or make their homes more accessible.”

Currently, Love INC is looking for people in need to help and for volunteers to provide that help for its compassion projects. Many of the compassion projects focus on minor home repairs and additions like yard projects, painting, small electrical fixes and adding handicappedaccessible ramps.

Participants, who must demonstrate specific needs, either physical or financial, are encouraged to reach out to Love INC of Lancaster County. Love INC provides volunteer labor and many of the materials required for its compassion projects.

UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading will hold games in the gym at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturdays from Aug. 5 through Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each session. No game will be held on Sept. 2, just prior to Labor Day.

Non-contact flag football is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 21. “We have volunteer coaches and buddies so each kid who needs one has a helper,” said Wiedemer. “Each kid gets to score, and each gets to kick, and we don’t keep track of the score.”

Cheerleading is open to boys and girls of any age. Coach Sophon Bowman works with the team members on cheers, and they cheer for the flag football teams and then perform during a break between games and at the end of the game. Wiedemer has connected with the World Cup Jupiter special needs cheering team, which practices at Spooky Nook, for a visit with the Challenger team. “The (World Cup Jupiter cheerleaders) will come and do their routine,” said Wiedemer, who is also working to bring the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders to a game to do a clinic with the cheer team. “I try to have guests each week,” said Wiedemer, who is also in touch with an internationally known magician from Philadelphia about a guest appearance.

Wiedemer first got involved in the program about seven years ago, noting that she and her husband had

often talked about doing this type of volunteer work. She said that 10 volunteers per game are needed for a successful program. Individuals who wish to volunteer may email teresaw@udsfoundation.org or call 717-715-8775.

There is no cost for individuals with disabilities to take part in Challenger football or cheerleading. Registration is now open at www.udservices.org/Challenger.

Those who register by Friday, June 9, will receive a free T-shirt. A parent or guardian must remain at Calvary with the participant throughout the program.

Wiedemer said in 2022, about 45 participants joined the program. This year, she would like to have 60 participants to have plenty of players for each team. Wiedemer noted that the program is open to participants from within and outside Lancaster County.

Participants for Love INC’s compassion projects must also reside in the Warwick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, Ephrata, Cocalico, Elizabethtown, Donegal and Hempfield school districts.

“Right now, there’s a big push on to get the word out to people who might have needs,” said Leaman. “We’re waiting to help people. We do our best to meet all the calls, but if we can’t, we try to connect people to other resources. When we receive calls, we try to connect local residents with our partner churches in their areas. It’s essentially a mission trip to your backyard.”

Last year, Love INC received between 200 and 300 requests for services as part of its compassion projects. Some 250 volunteers from Love INC’s 32 member churches completed about 100 of those projects in 2022.

“I want people to know that

serving is a call for Christians,” said Leaman. “It can be very easy. There are people in need in your neighborhood, and you may not even realize it. Our nonprofit mission is to mobilize the Lord’s churches to serve the community. We partner and connect with churches across the county.”

An affiliate of a national movement, the local Love INC is a network of 160 Lancaster County churches from 24 denominations. Founded locally in Ephrata 15 years ago, Love INC also engages in missions of temporary housing, elderly transportation and the fielding of other types of calls from the community.

“Some of the early board members saw this need for churches to serve their communities, and they thought this was a good model,” said Leaman. “Over the years, the mission has changed in various different ways. We’ve tried to ebb and

MTHS to present program about blacksmithing

The Manheim Township Historical Society (MTHS) will present “The History of Blacksmithing” by guest speaker Anrew Reist on Saturday, June 10, at 1 p.m. at the Manheim

Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.

Reist will discuss the tools used to shape metal and the types of metal and ironwork that are produced. A live demonstration will follow the talk.

Reist is a blacksmith, art teacher, anvil producer and collector who became interested in the historic craft when he was 12 years old. Reist began apprenticing with a well-known blacksmith, who became a lifelong friend. His insight for design came from researching Lancaster County ironwork in books and at local museums.

As a high school sophomore in

2015, Reist started Oak Lawn Blacksmith Shop. Through apprenticeships and his degree from Tennessee Tech University, he gained knowledge and worked with worldrenowned artists.

All are welcome to the program. Reservations are not required. For more information, including how to access the program that will be livestreamed on Zoom, contact mthistoricalsociety@gmail.com or 717-569-6638.

More information about the MTHS and upcoming activities is available at www.facebook.com/manheim townshiphistoricalsociety and www.mthistoricalsociety.com.

Don Robinson from the Old Line Museum in Delta will present on the history of the slate industry, historic uses of slate, the immigration of Welsh quarrymen, and contemporary preservation efforts of related slate industry structures in Coulsontown. The presentation will be followed by a demonstration on slate splitting and shaping, and attendees may have an opportunity to try shaping slate.

The program is free, and no reservations required.
