Homework, tests, school projects, extracurricular activities. Students take on a lot of responsibilities, and they work hard.
Graduation marks an early life milestone and reinforces the process of education. It is a time for reflection and a cause for celebration.
“These kids deserve it,” said Sean Van Eman, who’s in his first year as principal at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). “The expectations at Lancaster Catholic High School are higher. It’s important to have special events. The education at Lancaster Catholic focuses on the mind, body and spirit. That’s also what makes it special.”
Van Eman served as one of
the masters of ceremonies at LCHS’ 97th graduation celebration on the evening of May 22 inside the private school’s Berger Gymnasium. About 1,000 people attended, including 122 members of LCHS’ Class of 2025.
The 70-minute ceremony combined elements of joy, gratitude, the sense of accomplishment and apprehension.
“We really focus on the dignity and the solemnity of the event,” said Van Eman. “We practice three days for this event. The level of familiarity makes it special for the kids. It’s built into our tradition.”
After inclement weather forced the festivities inside, LCHS’ graduation ceremony began with teachers and members of the faculty processing to their assigned seats in the gymnasium.
The students of the Class of 2025 symbolically followed their leads.
After a blessing by LCHS chaplain Father Stephen Logue and the singing of the national anthem, the gathering was treated to four inspirational speeches from valedictorian Ivana Dougherty, salutatorian Kelsie McCuen, LCHS president Kyla Hockley, Harrisburg Diocese secretary of education and superintendent of schools Daniel Breen, along with graduating senior Matt Carroll’s poem “Caps, Dreams and All That Came in Between.” Then, members of the Class of 2025 had their names announced as they received their LCHS diplomas on stage.
“Though these four years that have gone by so quickly, it’s a wonderful thing to celebrate the ending and reflect on all the

Music can liven any occasion. Music can enhance any occasion.
With Highland Presbyterian Church’s Performing Arts Series, music is the occasion.
“The performing arts are so important because they
bring people of all generations together,” said Jennifer Switch, who’s one of the 13 committee members for the series. “Everyone can come together and enjoy music and keep music alive for kids and families. Music is a social thing we all need.”

A couple of bean bags. Two inclined boards. Twenty-seven feet of lawn.
For the Junior League of Lancaster (JLL), cornhole is more than a game. Cornhole is an avenue for bringing neighbors together to help fellow neighbors, a vehicle for feeding the hungry and a fun fundraiser.
“Cornhole is one of the fastestgrowing sports in America,” said Tesla Atkins, one of the organizers of JLL’s upcoming cornhole fundraiser. “It’s easy to set up a tournament. It’s something everyone could do and enjoy. It’s a summer fun activity. We’ve gotten a lot of community (support) in the past. They come for cornhole but maybe have a fun time watching polo as well.”

The fourth edition of JLL’s annual Cornhole Classic will be staged from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 15 - Father’s Day - at the Lancaster Polo Club’s Forney Field, 70 Church St., Lititz. The rain date for the family-friendly community event is scheduled for Sunday, June 22.
Players are encouraged to register for the tournament at www.jllancaster.org/ the-cornhole-classic/ or in person up until 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded in advanced, intermediate and beginners’ categories.
At 2 p.m. on that same day, the Lancaster Polo Club will host a home match.
An admission fee will be charged to cover all the activities that day.
“Some of the (cornhole) players in the advanced group travel to events and they’re the crowd to beat,” said Atkins. “I think my favorite part of the event is getting to play cornhole with people you care about. It can be a spouse, a friend or a loved one. Spending quality time with a loved one, you really can’t go wrong.”
In addition to flying bean bags and polo, JLL’s Cornhole Classic will also feature eight food trucks, music, a silent auction, games, beverages and local artisan vendor stands.
“The vibe is whatever you want it to be,” said Atkins. “It can be chill playing cornhole, or you can watch polo. You can go shopping with the vendors. We will also be honoring dads and making sure they have great times as well.”
The event is expected to
draw nearly 100 cornhole players and another 400 spectators and visitors. JLL is hoping to raise $15,000 to battle food insecurity in Lancaster County.
JLL is self-funded through sponsored community events and dues paid by members.
“We are trying to raise funds to fight food insecurity,” said Atkins. “We are women-led, but we are supporting everyone in Lancaster who is struggling with food insecurity. We have a community impact group and a fund development group. We support a number of initiatives throughout Lancaster.
Whether we’re sending a volunteer or a monetary donation, we want to invest in community programs. We want to be intentional in helping groups.”
Headquartered at 1130 Marietta Ave., Lancaster,
JLL is one of nearly 300 chapters of the Association of Junior Leagues International located in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The local branch, which was formed in 1923, is sustained by nearly 80 active members.
“We are trying to promote and perpetuate social change in Lancaster,” said Atkins. “We’ve kind of been silently helping for years. But the only way to grow is to let people know what we’re doing. We’re so welcoming and inclusive. It’s awesome
to make new friendships. It’s so many women from so many walks of life, and everyone has a hand in our accomplishments.”
“The Junior League of Lancaster is doing wonderful work,” continued Atkins. “Even if you don’t know about cornhole or polo, come out and learn about us. It’s going to be a great day. Just get to know us a little better.”

Historic downtown Lititz is easy on the eyes. Downtown Lititz is pleasing to the ears. The downtown business district has a welcoming, hometown feel. The downtown shopping district is filled with tantalizing aromas.
Downtown Lititz is also delicious.
The next event on Venture Lititz’s annual business-promoting schedule will celebrate the fifth of the five senses. Venture Lititz will present its annual downtown block party, Taste of Lititz, on Friday, June 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. Four blocks of East Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic - from Broad Street to Water Street - and opened to foot traffic, as visitors are afforded an opportunity to sample small portions of dishes being offered by 30 food-related local businesses.
“As time has gone on, we’ve had more and more options for good food downtown,” said Emily Allen, who’s been Venture Lititz’s executive director for two years. “There’s just a wide variety of things that
taste good. These (business owners) pour their hearts and soul into it. They are passionate about making foods that you might not otherwise experience.”
Taste of Lititz is free to attend, but there are some costs associated with samplings. Other downtown businesses will offer extended shopping hours that evening.
“It feels homey,” said Allen. “You can get in and out of the streets easily. It’s a fun way to experience Lititz in a slightly different way. It’s also a way to see what some of the businesses have to offer. Restaurants come out and sell small things, little samples. It’s kind of like, ‘Oh, I’ve never been here before. Let’s try this.’ It’s a different atmosphere downtown.”
During the event, Venture Lititz will celebrate its 20th anniversary of supporting downtown businesses and bringing people to Lititz.
“People love to eat,” said Allen. “This is an excuse to try a lot of different restaurants at one time, which is kind of great. Everyone in town sets up something, not just the eateries.”
and experience a full meal.”
The mood of the event will be stoked by live music, and visitors will be afforded an opportunity to contribute to Venture Lititz’s 10,000 flowers mural project. About a dozen local nonprofits will be there operating information booths highlighting their services and the roles that they play in the community.
“It feels like summer is getting started,” said Allen. “You get to see everyone interacting. It just kind of kicks off summer in a cool way. You don’t get to experience that in every small town. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year.”
only event in the warm months. This is another time to bring everyone together and celebrate the community and everything that Lititz has to offer.”
Between setting up, tearing down and cleaning up, the work of some 40 volunteers is required to make Taste of Lititz a reality.
“It’s a good opportunity for businesses to introduce themselves to people,” added Allen. “This is a good chance to taste something and then maybe go back
As many as 9,000 people are expected to savor a Taste of Lititz.
“Everybody’s welcome,” said Allen. “Each of our events is a totally separate thing. This is our one and
“Venture Lititz has one full-time employee and one part-time employee,” said Allen. “Every other hour is a volunteer hour. We report hundreds of volunteer hours to the state throughout the year. We have an incredibly active board. Without our board and all the volunteers, we’d be dead in the water. It’s what makes Lititz so amazing, all these people putting time back into their community.”

On April 24, the Manufacturers’ Association concluded its eighth program year for its high school pre-apprenticeship program with a graduation ceremony hosted at Penn State York’s campus coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week on April 30. The association’s pre-apprenticeship program introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing careers in seven trades and provides opportunities to pursue high-wage and high-demand careers locally. The program includes students from York, Lancaster, Perry, Chester, Dauphin, Cumberland, and Lebanon counties, including the Milton Hershey School and several of the region’s

career and technology high schools.
This year’s pre-apprenticeship program graduated 78 students from across southcentral Pennsylvania. During the recognition event, students received their state-recognized pre-apprenticeship credentials and were congratulated by invited guests, family members, program
partners, and local manufacturing employers Eden Tool and Tate Inc.
The annual Carl Winters Jr. Memorial Scholarship, which provides $1,000 for further education or training in an industrial career, was awarded to Hayden Barr-Yendall from Red Lion High School as part of the York County Alliance for
friendships and memories we have made together,” said Dougherty. “Over the years, I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought often about this moment and what it would finally feel like graduating. Because of how talented and competitive our class was academically, my class rank was always changing, and there were plenty of times when people asked me how I would feel to be valedictorian. I always said it would be fun to speak at the ceremony.”
Father Logue presented a benediction prayer, the students sang the LCHS alma mater and the new graduates gleefully tossed their caps into the air. The ceremony was concluded by the graduates’ exit procession.
“It’s the end of one stage and the beginning of the next stage of life,” said Van Eman. “With this class, they’re all united. They really were like a family unit. I see friendships extending beyond high school. They had a strong sense of community for our school and our mission.”
“My favorite part of graduation was when I was sitting on stage seeing the sense of gratitude on our seniors’ faces,” continued Van Eman. “It was visible. They didn’t have to say it. That felt so special in that moment.”
LCHS’ Class of 2025 was treated to several days of celebrations. Prior to Thursday’s graduation, LCHS conducted a senior breakfast on May 20, where 12th-graders were afforded
an opportunity to interact with LCHS alumni from the Class of 1975; the 150senior awards ceremony was presented in front of the entire student body and faculty on May 21; and a baccalaureate Mass was celebrated by Timothy Senior, the bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, on the evening of May 21 at Holy Trinity Church in Columbia.
“As humans have developed, education has become something needed for survival,” said Van Eman. “Education meets an expectation and goes beyond that and helps humanity. I know when our kids graduate they are passionately faithful and socially responsible. There’s a community of people who know what Lancaster Catholic is.”
Propped up by their educations, graduates of the Class of 2025 will apply their LCHS experiences at colleges, trade schools and technical school; in the military; and in the work force. During their time at LCHS, the recent graduates accrued a combined total of 10,250 hours of community service and earned a combined total of $7.2 million in college scholarships.
“All of our kids have plans after graduation,” said Van Eman. “Our graduates will become future engineers, future lawyers, future entrepreneurs, future people helping in the community. There’s a really special place in our county that has a track record of great students becoming great people. Our community cares.”

“I think audiences should expect high-quality musical performances,” said Switch. “We’re really changing the scope of what the series was by including family and broadening the genres of music. Before, it was almost like the same groups would come back year after year. We’re adding more family concerts to get more of the community involved with music.”
“Typically, (the performances) are fun and energetic,” continued Switch. “It’s different, energetic music for the summer.”

Church. That series was originally founded in the 1970s through an affiliation with Lancaster Opera Company Associates.
“The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series is now disbanded, and we’re creating a yearlong series under the Highland Presbyterian Performing Arts name,” said Switch. “We have four members from the old group on our committee, and we’re bringing in new artists. I think it’s a little sad, but I don’t think we’re going to lose the audience they created. I think as it goes on, it’s going to get better.”
Highland Presbyterian Church, which was founded in 1958, seeks to play a prominent role in the Manheim Township community, and music has always played an important role in the church’s mission.
“The church is looking at
(the series) as outreach,” said Switch. “We’ve got this beautiful set up that’s part of our mission. Our newest mission is to be seen, known and loved by God. We want the community to know about our church. We want people to live the experiences of what we can provide. Every church has to continue to evolve. We continue to push into the community and try to keep our members feeling useful. That’s why getting a new music series is the next way to evolve.”
“We want to get people out and get people involved,” added Switch. “We are just trying to be a place in the community. We feel music is important to get people together. We want people to experience live music; it can be such a good mood booster.”
