Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we
saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-andrescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes.

Linden Hall To Bring Back Adaptive Tennis

Lititz Area Mennonite School student Elijah Pierce was several weeks into All-In Tennis, an adaptive tennis program held at the Anne Brossman Sweigart Sports & Fitness Center Gymnasium at Linden Hall, when COVID-19 restrictions forced the program to close in the winter of 2020. Undaunted, 11-year-old Elijah, who uses a wheelchair, was back at the gym in May of 2021 to test his muscle memory. Linden Hall athletic director Julia Parmakian bounced a few balls for Elijah, which he missed, before he sent one sailing over the net. Elijah and other youths ages 8 to 18 of all abilities will have the opportunity to take part in an All-In Tennis program that will be held at the center, 212 E. Main St., Lititz, beginning Sunday, June 27. Sessions will be held each Sunday from 1 to 2

Landis pointed out that the wheelchair has slanted wheels and an extra small wheel at the back that creates greater stability and allows Elijah to maneuver better. Elijah has interests in a number of sports, including hockey, baseball, and football. He takes part in an archery program at his school, and he is pleased with his progress in tennis. “I like hitting (the ball),” he noted. The program, which is spearheaded by Melissa Landis, director of finance for Linden Hall and United States Tennis Association (USTA) Middle States Region board member, has a goal of giving people opportunities to learn to play tennis. “One of our initiatives is to grow the game for everybody,” explained Landis, who has been trained in teaching adaptive tennis. A grant from USTA allowed her to purchase equipment for the program. “The balls are not as compressed, and there are also foam balls,” said Landis, who pointed out that some balls have bells that jingle. One item that was not included in the grant was a special wheelchair for Elijah. Landis contacted a number of people and finally secured a chair in California.

Linden Hall has a historical connection with supporting adaptive tennis programs through former Linden Hall tennis coach Winnie Gilliford, who passed away in 2001. Gilliford was a pioneer in teaching individuals with disabilities, and she wrote a book, “Winnie’s Wisdom, Great Tennis Truths From an ‘Old’ Pro.” There is a cost to take part in the program. The 2021 season of African American Heritage Walking Tours in downtown Lancaster city will begin on Saturday, June 5, sponsored by the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. Additional tour dates are Saturdays, July 10, Aug. 7, Sept. 4, Oct. 2 and Nov. 6. Tour guides will lead guests to 12 historic sites, including four with connections to the Underground Railroad. Attendees will learn about the lives and times of abolitionists, Underground Railroad agents, religious leaders and black entrepreneurs. Tours will depart from Lancaster City Visitor Center, 38 Penn Square, Lancaster, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will last approximately two hours. No reservations are necessary, but interested individuals are asked to arrive 15 minutes before departure times.
Separate fees have been set for adults under 62, for seniors age 62 and up and for students ages 6 to 18. Children under age 6 may attend for free. Tour proceeds will fund programs and expenses of the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. This tour series began in 2016 and is a collaborative effort with the City of Lancaster Office of Promotion and is operated in partnership with Historic Lancaster Walking Tour, which has been conducting history tours of downtown Lancaster since 1976. She noted that she is grateful for the multiple relationships she has created with teachers and peers at MTHS, as well as the awesome academic and extracurricular environment the school creates for students. In looking at the rainbow following the storm, Fyfe said she will reflect on the wisdom humans can gain from a difficult experience. “It’s about looking back on what you’ve learned and how to move forward after a storm or a challenge in your life,” she said,
adding that she will focus on using the quiet period to consider how to employ those lessons when encountering the next storm. In the fall, Fyfe will attend Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove to major in creative writing and education. She said that it was the teachers of MTHS who pointed her to the career path she has chosen. “The teachers here showed me what I want to do with my life,” she said. “They were the inspiration for moving forward into (education).”

Project Lifesaver from pg 1 Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker
said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. “People should enroll in the program because,

although this won’t keep loved ones from wandering, it will serve as a safety net,” explained Cieslinski. “If they wander, this will give us a fighting chance to find them as opposed to finding that needle in a haystack.” Police officers keep profiles on every individual enrolled. “We have these on hand so officers are aware of what the person looks like, what they will possibly wander to, what their disabilities include, and so on,” noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so that in the event of an emergency, they won’t be afraid of us. We want people to see us and know that we mean safety.” Individuals with an official diagnosis can enroll in Project Lifesaver. County Treasures - Seiverling Museum Specializes In Pedal Cars BY ANN MEAD ASH
At 66 Lancaster Ave., Ephrata, just a stone’s throw from Ephrata Hospital, is a small building that holds treasures to make the eyes of most children and many adults grow large with delight. The Seiverling Museum - Car and Pedal Car Museum holds 150 pedal cars from all over the world, plus three full-size classic cars. “This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiverling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum and gives tours by appointment. Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ’95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, pointing out the 1947 tan and orange Pontiac that is still in the museum. “He called us over the first day it came because he was so excited.” The first pedal car was the beginning of a trend that would last the rest of Richard’s life. “It felt like every week, I was putting in a new pedal car,” Darren said. “They came in crates from all over the nation.” According to Darren, Richard liked the color schemes and how small and cute they were. “There’s hardly any maintenance,” he noted, adding that Richard’s love for the cars was evident as he showed them off and told the story of each car. Darren shared that most of the cars in the museum are “original restored,” meaning they were bought brand new

by somebody and played with, and they went to the attic before being restored close to original condition. “The restorers in the mid-1990s picked them up and restored them and sent Richard a Polaroid (photo),” said Darren. “If he liked the Polaroid, he sent them a check.” By 1996, Richard wanted to share his enjoyment with others, so he opened the museum and began bringing in small groups for tours. Soon he was running out of room. “At that time, he had a 1927 Chevy coupe, and one day, he said, ‘I am selling the Chevy because I need more room for pedal cars,’” recalled Darren, who was 16 at the time and was shocked by the decision. “(Richard) sold the Chevy and (bought) more pedal cars.” For an adult who remembers the age of pedal cars from about the 1920s to the 1970s, it is interesting to look for cars similar to those they remember, but some rather fancy automobiles are on display as well. Referencing a 1924 Packard, Darren noted that families that could afford $50 to $100 for a child’s toy in that time period owned the
cars. By the 1950s, some pedal cars could be purchased for $15, and middle-class families could afford them. “I consider these the Power Wheels of that time,” said Darren. Darren, who still buys and sells pedal cars, identifies them by searching old pedal car advertisements on the internet. But cars are not the only vehicles represented in the museum. A truck that was specially made for the museum, a bulldozer, and a tandem pedal car that could be pedaled by two children at the same time are also featured, along with several pedal planes and a boat on its own trailer. Currently, the museum is open only by appointment, and groups are limited. There is no admission fee, but perperson donations are appreciated. “We let everybody mosey around at their own pace,” said Darren. Samaritan Counseling Center reminds community members that it offers resources to help support teenagers on their journey toward mental health and wellness. Among these resources is TeenHope, a mental health program that screens middle and high school students at Lancaster County schools for anxiety, depression, and suicide risk. After youths are identified as at-risk, TeenHope collaborates with parent
and teenagers to connect them with mental health resources in the area through referral recommendations. Since the program’s beginning in 2013, more than 13,000 students have been screened. Due to an increase in the number of local teenagers at risk for anxiety, depression, and suicide in Lancaster County in the last year, as well as the virtual schooling that has occurred during the pandemic, TeenHope is devel-
oping a fully digital screening process. The transition to digital has been fueled by the donations of many individual supporters, as well as local organizations such as the High Foundation, which contributed a $15,000 grant, and LOHF, which provided a total of $30,000 in grants. Musser Foundation Magician from pg 1 was quick to credit all ences to different worlds, Supports Families Of Myers those involved in his show, including visiting the circus, Worlds of Wonder,” for adventures with pirates, Children With Cancer “which he won in the category Alice in Wonderland, and the When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.” After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.” Although the high cure rate is good news for families whose children are diagnosed with the disease, Musser saw the toll it took on parents. “I was receiving a lot of my chemo with kids and their parents and hearing about how they were trying to make ends meet,” he said, adding that often one parent stops working to care for the child. “A lightbulb went off, and I thought, ‘I will use this $35,000 for that.’” Because the initial funds were raised by friends of Musser who held a golf tournament, he decided to hold another. This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. In 2001, the Jeff Musser Foundation became an official nonprofit. Working with social workers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Hershey, and Nemours in Wilmington, Del., the organization works to alleviate financial obligations that can become burdensome. “We try to keep (the family) in their
home, so we make mortgage payments, rents, utilities, and car payments,” said Musser. Larry Shirk, who helps the organization fundraise, said that the hospital social workers who contact Musser with information about families that need help are crucial to the system. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s six-member board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically so the work of the foundation could continue. “After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser, who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way to help is to visit our website and donate money,” shared Musser, adding that the organization is happy to accept checks. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions and awards were done virtually. “After reviewing all the entries, they selected ours as the best,” said Myers, who added that he was notified of the award in February by IMS president and founder Tony Hassini. Myers explained that the show was chosen for manipulation talents. “There is a part of the act where I do sleight of hand,” he said. “It’s very difficult and showcases the magician’s skill. It requires decades of mastery and experience.” The specific part of the act Myers referred to involves silk manipulation with many brightly colored handkerchiefs appearing and disappearing. “The color makes it difficult to conceal (the handkerchiefs),” Myers explained. “Worlds of Wonder,” which is now playing at the theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, involves the Magic and Wonder cast taking audi-

The theater is currently open up to five days per week, and Myers noted that eventually he would like to present up to 10 shows weekly. “We were in the process of working on launching a second show in Lancaster last year,” said Myers, who said that a comedy, music, and variety show was planned and postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We will have more (entertainment) experiences, including (types of shows) that Lancaster County hasn’t seen,” said Myers, adding that the size and flavor of the show is unique to the area. Myers grew up in Chambersburg, but he and his family have lived in Lancaster for more than a decade. “We call this home,” said Myers, who has also performed in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and put together the details of the current Magic and Wonder show in Branson, Mo. Germann reported that support for this grant came from multiple local organizations, including APR Supply Company, the High Foundation, and Clark Associates. According to Nolt, one of the three spaces will be a design lab area with laptop technology, space for a laser engraver, and 3D
printing equipment. “All that equipment is sensitive to humidity,” said Nolt, who said the second area would be dedicated to precision machining, welding, and introductory types of activities. Throughout the summer, the committee will collect books for a small library that an Episcopalian prison chaplain will keep for prisoners in Lancaster. The committee is looking for donations of Bibles, devotionals, inspiring biographies, and more. Paperbacks are preferred, but hardcovers will be accepted. Except for 2020, every year since 1994, Water Street Mission (WSM) has hosted a Drive Away Hunger Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament will occur on Friday, June 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Supporting the general ongoing financial needs of caring for those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County, WSM’s annual golf tournament invites local business professionals to enjoy a round of golf at a private club. After the match, participants will enjoy a catered meal with other players. “I’m looking forward to getting out on the course, developing relationships, and connecting people to the heart of Water Street Mission,” stated director of marketing Matt Clement. The golf tournament will help support services WSM provides for individuals experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County. WSM offers emergency shelter, residential programs, and com-

Jill Brinser of Hermione Paints has shown her artwork at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. After 28 years of working in design and advertising, Brinser decided to reinvent herself as an acrylic painter. In late 2018, she rekindled a long-ignored passion for fine art. Beginning Thursday, June 3, the city of Lancaster Office of Promotion (LOOP) will host its 45th annual Red Rose Run. This year’s race will be virtual, and participants can complete their 5 miles in one continuous route or over the course of four days from June 3 to Sunday, June 6. Participants will have the option to walk or run the race and can submit their times for a chance to win awards. Organizers will email the winners once they have been determined. T-shirts will be included in registration, which is
currently open. This will be the fourth year that proceeds benefit Lancaster Central Market. When asked why people should participate in the race, Dani Decker, communications manager at Central Market, said, “Because it allows Central Market to continue operating and to continue to be a source of fresh food for Lancaster city and the surrounding counties.” Although there are for profit businesses within the market, Central Market is run by a nonprofit. Events such as Red Rose Run help Central Market with outreach, employing staff, and maintaining
