Not Just Horsin’ Around The E Plans Seriously Fun Fundraising Bash
he Emerald Foundation was established in 2011 by Joe Beseker, and in 2016, the organization bought the former Jewish Community Center at 2120 Oregon Pike. Since purchasing the building, now called the Emerald Foundation Community Campus or just The E, the organization has not held a fundraiser. Instead, the foundation has operated a plethora of programs, including Autumn’s Food Pantry, esports clubs for students, and Operation Emerald, which provided PPE to first responders and others during COVID-19. In June, however, The E will host its first fundraiser in the building - a Triple Crown Bash. Executive director Martha Beseker said that the fundraiser was so named for its timing close to the final race of the Triple Crown. “It’s happening right before the Belmont Stakes,” she noted. The Bash
T
will be held at The E on Friday, June 10, at 6 p.m. The event will include dinner, cocktails, live music, and both live and silent auctions in addition to a few surprise activities. Auction items will include ballroom and gym rental packages, a billboard rental, and the use of a private residence in Orlando for a vacation. The fully wired playhouse that can be seen in front of The E will also go up for bids. Silent auction baskets will have horse racing themes. The E, which includes a fully upgraded kitchen along with improved HVAC and Wi-Fi, among other improvements, has been home to a number of area nonprofits, which were encouraged to interact with each other and with programs held in the building. Members of a Rise and Shine program for individuals with intellectual disabilities helped with Autumn’s Food Pantry or with an after-school program. See The E pg 6

“It’s a way for me to give back to VisionCorps and to help other people facing the same challenges that I am,” said Mike Hora, when explaining his motivation to participate in Eye Drop 2022, which is presented by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground. For 2022, Relay is back, and to celebrate, organizers are inviting area residents to come enjoy the carnival-style event they have planned. Activities will begin at noon on Friday, June 10, and conclude at noon on Saturday, June 11. As in the past, teams will gather at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, forming a 50-team tent city, as each team keeps at least one member walking the school track throughout the 24-hour period. The event is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In keeping with the carnival theme, planners will have tents, stilt walkers, clowns, a magician, face painters, and balloon artists at the location, and a gap in the center of the tent city will create a sort of
midway where relay teams will have carnival games set up. Sharon Groff of the Misfits on a Mission team emphasized that Lancaster County residents are welcome to join in the activities. “We want people to know they don’t have to be on a team or be a cancer survivor (to take part),” she said. “Anyone can come. Bring the kids out.” Indeed, Delp reported that children’s activities will be held during both days. Traditional Relay activities will also be observed, including the survivor’s ceremony at 4 p.m. on June 10 and the luminaria ceremony at dusk that same evening. At 7 p.m. on June 10, the annual cake auction will be held. Delp noted that the auction, which features James Fishel as auc-

Experience IU13 “People know (the IU13) from the lens of special education classrooms, and that is the foundation of who we are, but we have a 50-year history of doing really good work,” said Shannan Guthrie, program director with the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13). “ We take that dedication to other areas.” Among those areas are helping teachers with curriculum development and school districts to maximize funding. A sampling of the IU13’s activities will be highlighted during the group’s 50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, June 9, at the Lancaster offices, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Organizers will have a plethora of activities ready for attendees to enjoy. Among those will be the Star Lab, a portable planetarium that can hold up to 20 people, which will be set up in the IU’s large conference room. A demonstration of Brailing services will give attendees an idea of the number of books and flyers the IU transfers into Braille format each year. “We will showcase our Refugee Center and our cultural navigator services,” said Guthrie, who explained that cultural navigators help families to meet with other families and navigate the system to find babysitters, shelter, education, and health care services. A demonstration of orientation and mobility services will be held, and STEM activities will show how
lessons can be adapted for all levels of learning. “It will be in an expo style with examples (of what the IU13 does) all over the place,” said Guthrie, who added that Lisa Sanchez, a representative of Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, will talk about summer camps. Other stops on the visit might include learning about organ tissue donation or meeting Luca, a facility dog that that travels to classrooms within the IU. “We will have free hot dogs, water, and cupcakes for families while supplies last,” said Guthrie, who noted that school resource officers will hand out icy pops, and that food trucks will be located in the courtyard. Organizers have also prepared a special page that high-
lights milestones of IU13 history at www.iu13.org/history. “IUs were founded in 1965,” said Guthrie. “The IUs opened their offices in 1971.” Guthrie emphasized that members of the public are welcome at the free event. “The idea is to celebrate (and) learn about the work we do,” she said, noting that she hopes attendees will leave with “an understanding of the breadth of IU13.” “There are so many amazing things happening that people don’t (know about),” she said. Readers who would like to attend are asked to register so that organizers can plan to have enough food and door prizes. To register, please email communications@iu13.org. fine detail. He began working at VisionCorps in 2013, and heard about the fundraiser from Megan Tomsheck, VisionCorps vice president. “I never had a fear of heights, and I was pretty active my entire life. I wanted to do it. It sounded like fun,” Hora recalled. “Megan Tomsheck provided some videos and literature, and the more I saw and read, the more excited I got. It’s our biggest fundraiser.” He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and to find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps. “Eleven years ago, it got to the point I was not able to do the work that I was trained for. Somebody recommended VisionCorps, and I contacted them. They jumped into action,” he said. “I was assigned a client manager, and they evaluated my needs and provided me with mobili-
ty and occupational and vocational rehab.” “I have never been charged a dime for the services I received,” he added. VisionCorps also provided Hora with technology training that allows him to use his smartphone and a computer. “I suffered significant vision loss two years ago. I lost the ability to read texts, so I got introduced to a software program called JAWS that allows me to use the computer,” he said. “It actually reads what is on the screen and tells me what I am typing in. It’s like learning a whole new language.” Hora is taking part in the Eye Drop fundraiser for the third time. “This year I promised myself to give it more time coming down,” he said. “They do a great job with training. It’s very safe. They take all the safety precautions.” Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps. A new attraction at this year’s Eye Drop will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eyesight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions. To learn more about the event or to register as a participant, visit www.EyeDrop2022.org. Hora, an outdoorsman and fisherman, has created a fundraising team called American Ninja Walleyes. Those who would like to contribute to his fundraising efforts may visit https://give.vision corps.net/team/411113.

Those are the four Es,” she explained. “Our mission is to support education, focus on youth, and promote health, safety, and awareness in surrounding community.” “We hope to expand that in other ways to serve the community,” said Kettler-Zeigler, who noted that the facility is available for use by local organizations and that nonprofits receive a discounted rate. Full Circle Recycling To Celebrate 20th Anniversary
• VALUABLE REAL ESTATE •
THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2022
He has been featured in a number of world premieres, including “A Requiem for Fred Rogers” with the Slippery Rock University orchestra; “Hadassah,” in which he played King Xerxes, in Pittsburgh; and “David and Bathsheba,” in which he played King David, in Sherman, Texas. Allen lives in Marietta with his wife, Michele, who is a violinist and private teacher, and his three children. For more information, call 717-569-3241.
Full Circle Recycling is celebrating its 20th anniversary in June. The business has three locations: 965 Lancaster Pike, Quarryville; 702 S. Prince St., Lancaster, with the entrance on Seymour Street; and 1430 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. Brian Grimm has been involved in the recycling business since he was a child. His father, Ray, started G & R Auto Salvage with a partner in the 1970s. Growing up, Brian worked there on weekends and during summers. In the 1980s, he managed his own yard, Agreeable Auto Salvage in Mount Joy. Eventually, Brian sold his salvage yard and the Grimms including Brian’s wife, Dottie, and their sons, Zachary and Isaac - raised broiler chickens and beef cattle on farms in Willow Street and outside of Delta in southern York County. When Ray retired from his business, Brian and Dottie bought Ray’s salvage yard, located at the top of the Buck hill outside of Quarryville. They changed the focus from selling used auto parts to buying scrap metals. A few years later, they bought their second location on South Prince Street in Lancaster, formerly Dixon Recycling. Then, in 2014, they bought the former Rubin Steel Company on Fruitville Pike in Lancaster. Zach and Isaac attended college at Shippensburg and Penn State universities, with Zach earning a degree in business management and Isaac earning a degree in finance. After working elsewhere, they both returned to the family business and plan to take over the operations one day. Zach currently
manages the Fruitville Pike branch, while Isaac manages the location at the Buck. Cousin Troy McDonald manages the South Prince Street location. Full Circle Recycling gets its name from the fact that the Grimms went from the original business of selling used parts and recycling automobiles to farming, then back to recycling. To celebrate the business’s 20th anniversary, each of the Full Circle Recycling locations will hold customer appreciation events with free food, contests, and prizes. The Quarryville branch will hold its event on Friday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The South Prince Street branch’s event will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. The celebration at the Fruitville Pike branch will be on Friday, June 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome. For more information, call 717-284-2800 or visit www.fullcirclerecyclingpa.com.
