Family Farm Days will celebrate agriculture Concert series to quench local thirst for music

Producedoesn’t come from a market. Milk and eggs don’t come from a grocery store.

They all come from farms.

That’s the message that the organizers of Family Farm Days are trying to convey. Farms always have been, and will likely continue to be, the most important producer of food in Lancaster County.

This year’s edition of Family Farm Days will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz. The annual event, which offers free admission, is being sponsored by Lancaster County Agriculture Council and Oregon Dairy.

“If we wouldn’t have farms, we wouldn’t have food,” said Maria Forry, a partner at Oregon Dairy. “It’s that simple. If every single person had their own garden, farms wouldn’t be as important. But that’s not very realistic.”

W hile the purpose of Family Farm Days is to serve as an educational tool, there’s certainly a celebratory piece to the event as well.

Family Farm Days will feature tractor and wagon rides, animal petting, short presentations at the Barnyard Theater, Farm Show milkshakes, free samples of Oregon Dairy milk and ice cream, hot dogs and barbecue. The event will also include vendors, farm exhibits and information from agricultural organizations like the Lancaster County 4-H Club, the Lancaster County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation.

“It’s an opportunity for people to come onto a working farm and learn about agriculture and make the connection between farms and the food they eat,” said Forry. “What

we want people to know is that farmers care about their land and their animals. If we don’t care about our land, it’s not a sustainable business. We’re consumers too.”

Forry said that across the nation, 2% of the population is involved in production farming and that what that group produces helps sustain the other 98%.

Crowds between 12,000 and 15,000 people are expected over the three days of this year’s Family Farm Days. To pull it off, the event requires hundreds of volunteers.

“They’re our neighbors,” said Forry. “A lot of them are Lancaster County residents, but they also come from neighboring counties. They come from all over Lancaster County. It’s a lot of parents and younger kids or grandparents with

grandkids. It’s a good come-and-go flow.”

Family Farm Days began in the mid-1980s as sort of an open house at a farm. But the event really took off in the 1990s when the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture Committee became involved.

“It has obviously grown,” said Forry. “Now, there are definitely more activities for kids to do and more exhibits. For an event to be free to the public, sponsorships are needed to offset expenses. We get huge support from our local agriculture businesses.”

“It’s something we want to continue to offer every year,” added Forry. “We want to have more learning, but we’re not looking to grow this to 20,000 or 30,000 people. It takes a tremendous amount of people to make this happen.”

Half a century of entertaining the community. Five decades of supporting local musicians. Fifty years of lemonade.

The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series is celebrating its 50th anniversary, with the same style and grace that has become its calling card. This summer season’s performances, by bands and artists with a distinct Lancaster County flavor, will be presented every Thursday at 7 p.m. between June 8 and Aug. 3 at Highland Presbyterian

Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. There will not be a concert on July 6.

“ We have people tell us how much they like our concerts,” said Sharon Neal, secretary of the Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series board of directors. “They tell us they look forward to the next one. People come out again and again. They’re all entertaining. It’s not an ‘everyone falls asleep’ concert. It’s a rousing event.”

This year’s series includes Auscultation Brass on June 8; Silver, Wood & Ivory on June 15; Wheatland String Trio on June 22; Brenten Megee with See Lemonade Concerts pg 4

Lasagna Love delivers kindness

There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.

“ We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families,

spread kindness and strengthen communities.”

Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.

“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from See Lasagna pg 3

The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series has gained a reputation for its musical energy.

Lancaster British Brass Band, conducted by Andrew Yozviak, will perform in concert on Tuesday, June 6, at 7 p.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster.

The concert is free and will include an hour and a half of hymns, popular music, classics,

marches, solos, and original compositions written for brass band. The program was selected for a balanced presentation that attempts to please a wide range of tastes and interests.

Lancaster British Brass Band follows the path first laid down in the mill and mining towns of mid-19th-century Britain. Gradually evolving into a fixed group of 28 players plus a conductor, the brass band flourished under the sponsorship of mill and mine owners looking to raise morale. Later, the Salvation Army began capitalizing on the success of the bands by establishing brass bands as part of its outreach through music.

The unique sound of Lancaster British Brass Band is due to the ensemble’s being composed entirely of brass winds and percussion instruments.

A freewill offering will be received for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which helps local people in need.

life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”

Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.

Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals. Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninetyeight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers work-

ing for the organization.

Luther Acres residents plan Strawberry Festival

The Luther Acres Residents’ Council will host its annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Luther

Attendees will be able to enjoy fresh, local strawberries; shortcake;

and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”

A queen-size strawberry-themed quilt will be one of two quilts that will be available to win.

ice cream; and whipped cream for a set fee or purchase a meal to add a hot dog, chips and a beverage. Beverages will also be sold individually.

But we try to appeal to everyone,” Neal said. The concerts will cover the musical genres of classical, jazz, Broadway, contemporary, patriotic and rock ‘n’ roll.

“Our main goal is to promote musicians and pay them well,” said Neal. “Everyone is pretty much from Lancaster County, and we have so much musical talent here.”

Gallery sets exhibit by local artist

An art exhibit featuring pieces by local artist Nancy Yunkin, who has been a resident of Lititz for the past 44 years, will be on display at the Landis Homes Crossings Art Gallery during May and June.

Yunkin grew up in Williamsburg, where her favorite subject in school was art. Yunkin credits her mother for encouraging her to try her hand at oil painting, as well as her high school art teacher, who helped her pursue her talent.

The Crossings Art Gallery is located at 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The gallery is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds from the art gallery

support the Landis Homes Caring Fund. For more information, contact Deb Laws-Landis at 717-381-3583 or dlawslandis@landis.org.

Scout group, KPETS plan race

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America will collaborate with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) to host a virtual race during the month of June. Proceeds from the race will be shared between KPETS and the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

The community and Scouting families are invited to participate by running, walking, biking, hiking, or otherwise completing a 5K or 15K at

home, in their neighborhood, on a track, or on their favorite trail. Participants will be emailed a bib that they can print and are asked to share a picture of their race on the virtual race Facebook event page.

The registration fee will include a patch to commemorate the race. To register, visit http://padutchbsa.org /virtualrace. For more information, contact Nicole Welch at nicole.welch@scouting.org.
