Cole Portz Is Head Crusader in Waiting No More

He’s an advocate. He’s a role model. He’s a teacher.
Cole Portz is a coach.
Earlier this month, Portz was hired as the next head coach of the boys’ basketball program at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). Portz graduated from LCHS in 2017.
“I am truly grateful for this opportunity,” said Portz. “I would not have been blessed with this opportunity if not for the remarkable coaches, athletes, staff, alumni and friends I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by. They put my name on it, but it’s our program.”
Ultimately, Portz had an interim designation removed from his title, after stepping up
as an assistant coach and taking the Crusader reins when former head coach Joe Klazas stepped down in December of last season. The LCHS administration landed on Portz following a search for Klazas’ permanent successor that produced a strong pool of candidates.
“Cole brings a clear vision for our program and a strong ability to connect with and develop student-athletes,” said LCHS athletic director Nate Leonard. “We are confident in his leadership and his ability to build a program that reflects the values and standards of Lancaster Catholic.”

There are few things as relaxing and inspiring as a day on the golf course. Unless of course it’s a day on the golf course for a great cause.
HOPE International, a local faith-based nonprofit designed to aid underserved individuals around the world experiencing financial difficulties, is gearing up this year’s edition of its annual fundraising golf outing.
On Friday, Sept. 11, HOPE International’s golf outing will be staged at 8 a.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall. On the same day at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the event will be conducted at Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford.

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will offer programs for children ages 5 to 12 this summer at locations throughout Lancaster County. All programs are free of charge. Among the activities will be 5-Day Club, a program held daily for five consecutive days. It includes a Bible lesson, a missionary story, songs, Scripture memorization, and games. Sierra Club Awards Grants
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group recently announced the names of 12 more Lancaster County organizations that have been awarded its “Green
Project” Grants. The announcement was made as part of the Sierra Club’s celebration of Earth Day, April 22.
Each of the recipient organizations, in submitted proposals, explained a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, each for up to $500, a total of 122 Lancaster County organizations have received Green Grants from the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past 12 years.
Those awarded 2026 grants, along with their projects, include Adamstown Area Library, for expanding its Grab and Grow seed collection and strengthening partnerships with local growers and gardens; Circle Legacy Center Inc., to purchase supplies to support its Three Sisters Garden that grows corn, beans and squash; the Conservation Foundation of Lancaster County, for developing an environmental education workshop about nature journaling for teachers and the general public; Historic Poole Forge, for installing interpretive signs along its

provides Bible lessons, mission stories, Scripture memorization, crafts, songs, and games. Families may attend a short program on Friday, exhibiting what the children have learned throughout the week.

MTHS’ Magical History Tour is the nonprofit’s latest way to advocate for, explore and educate about local history in Manheim Township. The tour, which includes 100 significant historic sites - farms, dwellings, structures, villages and transportation routes - will also serve as a fundraiser for MTHS.
The two-hour Magical History Tour, which will begin and end at the Historic Stoner House at 601 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, will be offered on Saturday, June 6, at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets for the tour can be purchased at www.zeffy .com/en-US/ticketing/ magical-history-tour.
“It’s a charming tour through today’s landscape of Manheim Township to help people see what was once there,” said Webber. “With a little coaxing, I think I can get people to see what was there hundreds of years ago. There was once a perception in the community that these landmarks were just old junky buildings. I thought, ‘Let me take some people by the hand, have them look to their right, have them look to their left, and there was once a beautiful mansion there.’ It’ll be quite startling to those on the tour.”
The Magical History Tour will be conducted on a 24-seat Rivertowne Trolly, which is operated by a Marietta-based family business. From the Stoner House, the tour will head south on Fruitville Pike, before making a big square-shaped loop that will eventually lead back to the start.
Along the way, the Magical History Tour will travel past Lancaster Catholic High School, through the Grandview Heights neighborhood, past the Lancaster Country Club and over the Conestoga River, and it will visit the village of Oregon. Among the highlights of the tour will be a 30-minute

stop that will explore a renovated home and barn and a quick detour through Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.
“Passengers are going to see some beautiful mansions that have been restored,” said Webber. “They’re also going to see some mansions that are almost unrecognizable. They’re going to see roads as horse paths. We’re going to be riding on roads that used to be trolley tracks. It’s a trip through history.
“I’m sure people know about some of the places,” continued Webber. “But there may be places they never heard of. There are all kinds of different stories I want to share with people to explain the history behind them.”
As master of ceremonies, Webber will be miked up throughout the tour and connected with a public address system in the trolly. His outgoing personality, passion for the locale and knowledge of Manheim Township history are sure to shine through.
“Each rider will receive a booklet so they can follow along with pictures,” said Webber. “I want people to see and grasp what we’re talking about. Any good speaker knows his audience. I want to create a dialogue. People don’t care to listen if they think you don’t care about what they say. There’s inevitably going to be some dad-joke puns. There’s also definitely going to be some nostalgia.”
Manheim was one of 16 townships formed through Lancaster’s incorporation as a county in the late 1720s. MTHS, which was established in 2012, stages a number of historical programs and lectures throughout the year and participates in a handful of community events in and around Manheim Township.
“We want to create inquiring attitudes in people,” said Webber. “We want them asking, ‘Why is history magical?’ We want them to explore it in their own time and in their own ways. Through history, we want to build our community.”
A chicken barbecue will be held on Sunday, June 14, to benefit the families of David and Dani Brenneman and Chris and Rosene Sauder. The families are planning to attend a Joni & Friends family retreat this summer.

Resource Sharing App Launched
A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources, reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”
Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an overage of 4,800 clamshells of blueberries. Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intelligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Reve -
nue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was beta-tested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.
The Lancaster County Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide. The mobile app allows registered food pantry volunteers to list surplus inventory directly from a smartphone, request needed items from partner organizations across Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries, and view realtime shared inventory for better planning and distribution. Needs may include food and personal care products. As of May 5, the Lancaster County
Food Exchange served 32 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers.
Future plans include expanding partnerships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors; integrating additional features for reporting and logistics; and onboarding more community groups that serve local families.
Initial support organizations included Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP of Lancaster County). Food Exchange Resources is presently served by a board of directors, including Dana D. Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope; Amanda Frankeny, director of food justice at CAP of Lancaster County; Sandra Valdez, chief human services officer with the Spanish American Civic Organization (SACA); Willeta Calvin, community school director at Bright Side Opportunities Center;
and Janice Reinke, manager of food procurement and distribution at Midwest Food Bank. Additional support has been provided by Jenna Graeff, executive director of The Loft Community Partnership; Cindi Pasi, senior retail donation manager with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; and Paige McFarling, executive director at Lancaster County Food Hub. Financial support from three local organizations, including the Lancaster County Community Foundation, allows the food exchange to be offered free of charge to all volunteers.

A total of more than 300 participants are expected to attend HOPE International’s golf outing at both venues - mission supporters, community members, sponsors and golf enthusiasts.
“The purpose and goal
behind the golf tournament is to raise funds to help further HOPE’s mission to equip millions of families and entrepreneurs globally by giving them a safe place to save, the opportunity to receive small microfinance loans to start businesses, as well as training to overcome poverty and find hope in Christ,” said Emma McMurray, events fellow for HOPE International. The golf outing serves as HOPE International’s largest fundraising event. Over the past 25 years, HOPE International has positively affected the lives of 9.5 million people, both directly and indirectly.

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) has funding for Agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) for farmers in Lancaster County. The funding is provided through the State Conservation Commission Agriculture Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP).
Lancaster County has $2.3 million in ACAP funds for BMP projects, including grassed waterways, terraces, streambank fencing, stream crossings, barnyards, roof gutters, and manure storage struc-
tures. The conservation district provides up to 90% cost share through ACAP toward installation of practices to address existing conservation resource concerns related to manure management and soil loss.

The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will host the 158th Memorial Day service at Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, on Saturday, May 30, from 11:30 a.m. to noon. The service will be conducted at the Grand Army of the Republic’s soldiers’ burial plot, the final resting place for 206 men who served in the military forces of the United States during the American Civil War.

keynote remarks. The Gettysburg Independent Blues will serve as the honor guard. The SUVCW is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of those who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, the SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, was chartered on Feb. 13, 1889, and there has been an active camp in Lancaster ever since.

Contemplative Pentecost Service Planned
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host a contemplative Pentecost service in the Biblical Tabernacle Experience on Saturday, May 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The contemplative experience will draw attendees into God’s ongoing journey with humanity from the tabernacle to the cross to Pentecost. “Adopt a Pantry” Program Posted
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) team and the Lancaster County Master Gardeners invite backyard gardeners to join their collaborative efforts to increase fresh food access to those in need. This year’s goal is to engage 50 gardeners in Lancaster and Dauphin counties to grow and donate 25,000 pounds of produce. Items such as fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits are in demand specifically for any of the participating CPFB pantries. Gardeners with any level
of experience, including beginners, are welcome to participate, and Master Gardeners will help to answer questions throughout the growing season and provide in-depth information for Adopt a Pantry gardeners in two webinars. Pedaling Toward Confidence and Growth

At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time.
Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October.
“There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director.
Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal and lots of encouraging coaching while making new friends.
“We provide free 24-speed bicycles, helmets, uniform shirts, safety lights, everything,” Lee said. “Each evening, approximately 25 girls and 10 women ride together, and 45 boys and 20 men ride together in ride groups of six to nine riders. We use a separate curricu-
lum for girls and boys - the curriculum is focused on character development, life skills and spiritual growth.”
While riders of any skill level are encouraged to join LifeCycles, the more advanced riders are invited to participate in one of four summer challenge rides. Destinations will be Cape Cod and the Great Allegheny Passage, and two groups will travel from the Adirondack Mountains to northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire.
Based in Lancaster, LifeCycles is supported by Community Fellowship Church of Lancaster and by more than 100 people who believe in the organization’s mission. LifeCycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.
LifeCycles is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. Kids can join the program at any time during the season, Lee said, noting that many people join throughout the spring and summer as other commitments at school end and their calendars open up.
“LifeCycles is a great way to meet friends, grow and do something you probably already enjoy,” he remarked. “Come to improve your skills, see new parts of Lancaster County and beyond in a safe and positive environment.”

Railroad Museum to Celebrate Conrail
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will commemorate 50 years of Conrail during Conrail Days on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31.
Conrail launched on April 1, 1976, stepping in to rebuild the bankrupt northeastern freight rail network. The railroad operated through the heavily populated northeast and served many of the nation’s largest cities, from New York and Philadelphia to Chicago. Its legacy endures in the infrastructure it restored, the industries it reconnected, and the railfan community it inspired.
Several special activities are planned for Conrail Days. The Conrail His -
torical Society will hold a business meeting on May 30 at 10:15 a.m., and Conrail CEO Brian Gorton and Conrail Historical Society president Brock Kerchner will provide remarks at 11 a.m. Additional programs will include “I Carried a Camera at Work” by Larry DeYoung at noon and “The Heart of Conrail” by Doug Lilly at 2 p.m. On May 31, the presentations will be “Modeling Conrail” by Ed Kapuscinski at 12:30 p.m. and “Office Car Special” by Wes Reminder at 2 p.m.
