Exploring The New Normal MTHS Commencement Exercises Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH

hen Manheim Township High School (MTHS) graduation speakers were chosen, they were given writing prompts based on the theme “New Normal.” The three students who were selected will give their speeches on Thursday, June 2, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m., when the school graduates more than 450 members of the Class of 2022. Rachel Herr, daughter of Rebecca Herr of Lititz, was given the subject of “New Identity.” “(My speech is about) barriers (we all face) because of the identities that we don’t choose,” explained Herr. “But it’s the identities we get to choose that make us proud to be ourselves.” In the fall, Herr plans to attend Gettysburg College to major in international studies, with hopes of working at the United Nations or as a foreign

officer. Calling her time at MTHS “amazing,” Herr said that the education she received and the people she has met have impacted her the most. Sophia Yost, daughter of Michelle Yost and Andrew Yost of Lititz, wrote about “New Mindset.” She said her talk will expound on “learning from past exeriences and learning not to dwell on the negative moments.” Yost said she will discuss using a “growth mindset to focus on the positive for a better future moving forward.” In the fall, Yost plans to attend Duke University in Durham, N.C., to major in public policy with hopes of going to law school in the future. She said that her MTHS experience has been marked by an all-around supportive community, including faculty, students, and administration. “Everybody is very welcoming, and that adds to the academic and extracurricular environment,” Yost said. Child Evangelism Fellowship will hold Good News Clubs, vacation Bible school programs, and Five-Day Clubs throughout Lancaster County this summer.

Five-Day Clubs, vacation Bible school (VBS) programs, and Good News Camps. This year, summer programs will be held at 17 locations in Lancaster County. Welk explained that the basic ministry curriculum is the same for all programs, which begin with a 90-minute activity period including large group game time, welcome and prayer, a Word Up period with a catchy phrase concerning the main lesson, Bible verses and songs, a Bible lesson, a review, and closing games. Five-Day Clubs, which use the 90-minute basic format, are held in host homes. See CEF pg 3

Batman - the Batman who is scheduled to make an upcoming appearance at the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) - has a bit of information to share about his friend and fellow crimefighter, Superman. “In the DC Comics universe, the Superman logo (on Superman’s chest) is not an ‘S,’” said Batman. “It is a symbol of hope from Krypton (Superman’s home planet).” The Dark Knight may share other pieces of bat wisdom when he visits LHF at the invitation of local super historian Cory Van Brookhoven, president of LHF. The 2022 dance concert will also feature a short film on the history of Cavod. MakeFilms of Lancaster produced the video, which begins with Cavod’s roots in a barn in the Pequea Valley area of the Welsh Mountains. Cavod later moved to a location on West Main Street in New Holland, then to its present spot in the New Holland Shopping Center location. The Cavod branch at Supply, 280 S. your life.” Welk said that CEF Lancaster summer missionaries and interns, ages 14 to 18, will train at Camp Harmony in western Pennsylvania in June. During their week at camp, they will learn the program and be evaluated on each part that they teach. “So it is older kids teaching younger about Jesus,” said Welk. For the summer of 2022, host homes have been secured in the Hempfield area, the Lampeter-Strasburg area, Lititz, Mount Joy, the city of Lancaster, Manheim, Manheim Township, and Paradise. Hosts generally invite participants to their home, where CEF summer missionaries and staff oversee the program. VBS programs are held at churches. They add a snack and a 30-minute craft to the basic program. “The church that hosts us will provide volunteers to help with the crafts,” said Welk, who explained that CEF missionaries and staff work with the church VBS director on the craft and can be present to help if needed. Memorial Day Program Set U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, will host the 40th annual Memorial Day program on Sunday, May 29, at 2 p.m., rain or shine. This year’s program is co-sponsored by the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council and AMVETS Department of Pennsylvania. John Spruyt, director of Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, will welcome the audience. Bernie McDonald, AMVETS past department commander, will deliver the Memorial Day address. Joseph Snyder, Memorial Council trustee, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Parking will be available at the Arrow Head Community Club, Building 9-65, Fisher Avenue, on Fort Indiantown Gap Military Reservation. Shuttle bus transportation to and from

the cemetery will be available. There will be limited handicapped-accessible parking at the cemetery. Parking, the shuttle bus service, and the program are open to the public and free of charge. The Avenue of Flags display will be flown through Veterans Day week, Saturday, Nov. 12. This presentation is made up of over 700 casket flags that have been donated by veterans’ families. State, territorial, and military branch service flags will also be on display. Families may bring the casket (interment) flag they received at their veteran’s military honors funeral to the program and donate it to be flown on the Avenue of Flags. When Iron-Leg Corp. does something, the nonprofit goes big, said Sean Laukhuff, vice president. The organization’s latest fundraiser has a little bit of everything. “We’re calling it a Car Show, Family Day and Cornhole Tournament,” Sean said of the event which will be held on Saturday, May 28. The festivities will feature fun for people of all ages and will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. The event will include carnival games, a magician, a balloon artist and face painting, along with food trucks, including Halo’s Kitchen, Krazy Kones and Cupcakes by Casey. A cash bar will be available as well, along with a

silent auction and giveaways throughout the day. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Bill Coder as well as 10 Gauge, which will perform acoustic funk from 3 to 5 p.m. The entertainment will conclude with a show by Philly Keys, a dueling piano act that will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. A cornhole tournament will be open to teams and will feature cash prizes. Registration for the cornhole tournament will be held from noon to 12:45 p.m. A car show will be held at the event as well, with prizes and trophies for the winners. The top prize for the car show will be called Parker’s Pick and will be chosen by IronLeg president Matthew Millhouse’s son, Parker, in whose honor the organization was

started. Parker, 9, was born without his right leg. Iron-Leg Corp. became an official nonprofit in April 2021, and it raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. Previous fundraisers have helped the organization purchase a prosthetic hand for an 11-year-old boy in York, and the group has a 3-year-old Lancaster boy on its list for a prosthetic hand as well. Each prosthetic can cost between $10,000 and $50,000, Sean said, explaining that Iron-Leg commits to providing new prosthetics for the recipient as the child grows, up until he or she reaches age 18. He noted that Iron-Leg has set a goal of raising $30,000 at the family day.

Giving back comes naturally to Sean, who learned the importance of supporting the local community from watching his uncle, Ken Laukhuff, who helped to create the local Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. Other events organized by Iron-Leg include an annual golf tournament held in September. “This day is going to be so much fun, and we’re really counting on the generosity of the public,” Sean said of the family day, which will feature free admission. “Our motto is ‘Giving kids a helping hand and a leg to stand on,’ and we want to continue to do that right here in our community.” For more information on the Car Show and Family Day, search for “Iron-Leg Corp” on Facebook or visit www.ironleg.org.

Students at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool on Estelle Drive and Chesterbrook Academy Preschool at College Hill in Lancaster explored a bug’s life in celebration of Earth Day on April 22. On that day, students released more than 3,000 ladybugs on plants, flowers and trees throughout their schoolyards. Students were dressed for the occasion in the likeness of ladybugs, wearing red

and black clothing and antennae. In addition to the ladybug release, students made ladybug-themed crafts and participated in a “reuse it” activity by bringing items from home that can be used in classrooms at school. Leading up to Earth Day, students learned that ladybugs serve as a natural pesticide by feeding on insects that could otherwise harm the health of gardens, trees

and shrubs. Chesterbrook Academy teaches the importance of community and exploring nature at an early age. Originally from Lisbon, Portugal, Ericson has lived in Lancaster County for 20 years. The high school program at Lititz Area Mennonite School, the Collaborative Academy, began four years ago. Starting with students in 9th grade, we have added a grade each year. This year we are so proud of our graduating senior class and thankful for their amazing families who partner with us every day to bring a Christ-centered, whole-child, personalized education to each student. LAMS Collaborative Academy graduation will be held on May 25th at Brick Gables in Lititz. Congratulations to Marissa Harrington, Lance Martin, Rhett Musser, and Tyler Sommers, the LAMS Collaborative Academy Class of 2022!

Marissa Harrington has been at LAMS since kindergarten. She loves literature, both classical and fantasy, as well as theater and music. Marissa has starred in a number of shows both through LAMS Collaborative Academy and Born to Be Different Productions. Her clear and beautiful voice has dazzled many crowds. After graduating from high school, Marissa’s ambitions include pursuing a career in English education and vocal performance at Messiah University. She is a capable and caring student leader in high school and will truly be a gifted teacher and performer.

Rhett Musser came to LAMS CA in 10th grade. Rhett loves history as well as staying up to date on current events. He is currently finishing his senior year at Lebanon County Career and Technology Center in the Precision Machining and Computer-Aided Manufacturing program. After graduating from high school Rhett intends to pursue a career in precision machining. His strong attention to detail and accuracy will help him throughout his career.

Lance Martin has attended LAMS since kindergarten. Lance’s interests range from hunting and other outdoor sports to volunteering as a junior firefighter. He is currently finishing his senior year at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center through LAMS CA. After graduating from high school Lance intends to pursue a career in construction. His strong leadership skills and work ethic will definitely be an asset to his future employer. He is always thinking ahead which helps him get work done quickly and efficiently.

Tyler Sommers began attending LAMS CA in 9th grade as one of our “pioneer” students at LAMS CA. He came to LAMS in 5th grade. He currently works part-time at WJTL and has starred in a number of productions both at LAMS and with Born to Be Different Productions. He is currently finishing his senior year as a dual enrollment student at LAMS CA and Lancaster Bible College. He enjoyed taking Introduction to Filmmaking this past semester at LBC. After graduating from high school Tyler intends to pursue a career in live production. His strong leadership skills and perseverance will serve him well both on and off stage.
