Refurbished Jaycee

Gettingoutdoors is important. And physical activity is a key component of development. But nothing beats play.

Jaycee Park, located at 1031 Edgemoor Court in the southeastern portion of Manheim Township, is a great many things to a great many people. But first and foremost, it is a playground.

Jaycee Park was recently reopened for public use following the completion of a more-thanthree-year, $750,000 renovation project. The modernization reaffirms Manheim Township’s commitment to health and well-being and ensures local families will have a place to go to recreate well into the future.

“Playgrounds are for kids. The park is for everyone,” said Matt

Stopa, Manheim Township’s recreation director. “It’s important to just get outside. But there are a lot of social benefits to it as well.”

The rehabilitation of the 2.4-acre Jaycee Park was accomplished in two phases. The initial phase, which covered the basketball court and a pavilion, was completed in 2019.

The final phase, which was finished in November of 2022, addressed the playgrounds, the walking paths, a tot lot, the picnic shelters and a path providing access to the creek. Original plans for the renovation stretch back to 2015, and Stopa said that public input was considered when the plans were being formulated.

“We try to maintain our parks,” said Stopa. “It wasn’t in terrible shape. The equipment was older. It was more updating.”

Manheim Township has no way

of quantifying the number of visitors to the traditional neighborhood park, but Stopa said that Jaycee Park is heavily used by citizens who live nearby.

“That neighborhood does use that park pretty often,” said Stopa. “It’s a neighborhood park. It’s designed for people to be able to walk to. It’s for the families. We’re trying to make more things to do for families. They can come and picnic there, and I see a lot of adults using the walking path. They utilize the creek.”

“It’s open to the public, but the primary users are the people who live in the neighborhood,” he added.

The history of Jaycee Park dates back several decades, perhaps as far back as the 1960s.

“I think it plays an important role in that community,” said Stopa. “People can come together and

socialize there. It allows them to be together and see their neighbors.”

Through the efforts of its recreation department, Manheim Township operates and maintains a total of 13 parks, not all of which feature playgrounds. Jaycee is one of the township’s cozier parks.

“We think we have a good parks system,” said Stopa. “We have a dedicated work staff, and I think they do a fantastic job. They (the parks) look good and well kept. We try to (host programs) in them. The township likes to invest money in them.”

“We try to provide the best parks we can,” concluded Stopa. “We want the residents of Manheim Township to enjoy the parks. We do care about what the residents want to see in their parks. Jaycee Park deserved the opportunity to be rehabilitated.”

They say that the best things in life are free. Maybe the only thing better is people sharing resources with others.

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series is back bigger and better than ever. But as it has evolved into a major event in Lancaster County, the Summer Music Series has become more reliant on the financial support of local businesses and philanthropic organizations.

Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation president Tom Ellis said that the popular events couldn’t be offered free to the public without that support. This year’s 13-concert Summer Music Series, which will be conducted every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 27 at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, is being backed by Citadel, Clark Associates, Ephrata National Bank, Everence, the Hershey Company, Lancaster County Community Foundation and Woodstream.

“It’s a special event and businesses are allowing us to have this event,” said Ellis. “The series doesn’t happen without these sponsors. It’s not a nicety; it’s a necessity. They’ve really stepped up in an economy that doesn’t allow for this type of funding.”

The Manheim Township Alumni Association (MTAA) has announced that recipients of the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) are Michael J. Novak, Class of 1983, and Dr. Benjamin R. Stabler, Class of 2008. Since 1997, Manheim Township has honored graduates who have outstanding professional accomplishments and who have positively impacted their community. The annual recognition is meant to spotlight the noteworthy achievements of alumni and inspire current students.

DAA honorees will be recognized at a breakfast reception at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. DAA honorees will address the 2023 graduating class during commencement rehearsal following the reception. There is a cost to attend the breakfast reception, and registration is required by contacting Becca Smith Stamp at 717-560-3117 or mtalumni@mtef.net by Wednesday, May 24. Those who wish to make donations in honor of DAA recipients should contact Stamp for details. Novak, a senior vice president at J.S. Held, has a 35-year career in environmental consulting and remediation.

At Manheim Township, Novak was a member of the track, crosscountry, and wrestling teams. He

won the Lancaster-Lebanon League title in the 3,200-meter event and received the Blue Streak Award in 1983. He earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from Lehigh University in 1987.

Novak was founder and owner of Atlantic Environmental Solutions Inc. (AESI) for 24 years before the company was acquired by J.S. Held in 2021. One of New Jersey’s first Licensed Site Remediation Professionals, he has directed over $100 million in environmental projects at more than 6,000 client locations across 47 states and serves as an expert witness on environmental and regulatory compliance issues. AESI was included on the Inc. 5000 list in 2018 and 2019 and was included in the NJBIZ Top 250 Privately Held Companies in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Novak received the Executive of the Year Award in 2018 from the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), a 20,000-member business organization. In 2005, one of his remediation projects was honored with an Excellence Award by NJBIA. He has served on the boards of several professional organizations and has been president of the National Realty Club and the Hoboken Chamber of Commerce. Novak is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Rutgers School

of Business, Center for Real Estate, and serves on the Advisory Board of Citizens Bank and the Ambassador’s Board of Connect One Bank.

Stabler is a family physician with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.

At Manheim Township, Stabler was a member of the National Honor Society and played first chair bass in the orchestra. He was a three-year varsity football player, earning all-league honors as an offensive and defensive tackle, as well as a track and field athlete, winning the league shot put title his senior year.

Stabler attended Harvard University, where he played varsity football and was a member of two Ivy League championship teams. During college, he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemothera-

py during his senior year.

Following a gap year working for Lancaster General Health and completing his treatment, Stabler attended the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. As a family medicine resident, he was recognized for excellence in pediatric, emergency medical, and internal medicine care. Throughout undergraduate and medical school, he volunteered with various service organizations, including programs addressing hunger and raising funds for cancer research.

Stabler graduated from residency in June 2022 and returned to Lancaster to begin his career as a family physician.

Lititz has very good taste

Lititz is easy on the eyes. Lititz is pleasing to the nose. And do you know what else Lititz is? Delicious.

Taste of Lititz celebrates all things culinary in Lititz, highlighting the locale’s smells and flavors and tastes.

This year’s version of the glorified block party will unfold on Friday, June 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. The downtown business district, or at least three blocks of it, will be closed to car traffic and opened to the taste buds.

During that expanded happy hour, East Main Street from North Broad Street to North Water Street will be partitioned off, and tables will be set

up to allow visitors to sample all the delectable wares that downtown Lititz has to offer. The event, which is organized by and sponsored by Venture Lititz, is free to attend, and participants are encouraged to indulge their expanding palates.

“I always try to rotate where I go downtown,” said Venture Lititz executive director Rebecca Branle. “When I’m with someone, I’m always trying to introduce locals to something new. We have so many cool eateries. I think what people don’t realize is how many flavors we have in downtown Lititz.

The people who work there are so proud of the food they produce.”

Memorial Day services posted

will be Maj. Brian O. Remmey, who is retired from the United States Army Special Forces.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the people who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, the SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic.

Taste of Lititz

This year, about 35 local restaurants will have food samples available for purchase as part of Taste of Lititz, and while they will serve as the main course, the festive, carnival atmosphere will be garnished with drinks, art, outdoor games geared toward families and live music. It’s all a recipe for fun and fellowship.

“A Taste of Lititz is different in that it’s not super structured,” said Branle. “It’s a celebration, and we’re celebrating Lititz. We have tons of people calling to be involved, and it’s truly a Lititz event. It’s a block party and a get-together, where everyone is like family and we’re expressing how

much we love this place.”

After being shut down by the pandemic, Taste of Lititz made a triumphant return in 2022, with a crowd in excess of 3,000 people. Branle said the event is prepared for even greater numbers this time around.

“I think the vast majority of our visitors come from within the Warwick School District,” said Branle, “but we also get folks from Manheim Township and Ephrata and Manheim Central. It’s nearby visitors who love Lancaster County, who love Lititz.”

“I wanted to make it available to families, regardless of incomes,” continued Branle. “No tickets are required. Just show up and have a great night.”

Of all the events staged in Lititz, Taste of Lititz might be the most informal - and the tastiest.

“It’s about our local restaurants, our local art and taking little tastes from all the food options we have downtown,” said Branle. “I like to sit back and watch. For me, there’s this sense that I’ve got to pinch myself because I get to work here. You have all these people who are genuinely happy. It’s one of those moments where you get to take stock of how special this place is.”

Summer Series

“We curate music and art for everyone in the Lancaster community,” added Ellis. “Most of our audience is drawn from the city of Lancaster.”

If generous support has become a trademark of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series’ 61-year tradition, so has diversity. This summer’s music series, which features a wide variety of genres, from jazz to Irish, from blues to rock, from bluegrass to funk and soul, promises not to disappoint.

Traditionally, the Summer Music Series has drawn between 3,000 and 6,000 viewers for each 90-minute concert. That number usually balloons to 25,000 to 30,000 for its annual patriotic concert, which this

year will be celebrated on July 2.

“It’s how summer begins,” said Ellis. “For people who grew up here, they’ll say, ‘I remember going to the Long’s Park Summer Music Series.’ I think this year’s lineup is one of the best we’ve had in years. Its diversity is curated for every audience. We want to make sure the music resonates with the citizens of Lancaster. We almost need to be fresh and new every year so people come back.”

The now-iconic Long’s Park Amphitheater was built in 1962, and the summer music simply followed. Over those years, the Summer Music Series has introduced people to performers like Count Basie, Pat and Shirley Boone, The

Smothers Brothers, Helen Reddy, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Roberta Flack and Kevin Bacon, many before they became household names.

“The musicians come to us after every event and tell us, ‘I hope you realize what you have here,’” said Ellis. “We don’t look for bands that create an on-stage performance

through pyrotechnics and lighting. We want it to be pure art through music. We want to have artists who are true to their craft.”
