Manheim Township

What makes Occupational Development Center of Lancaster’s (ODC) Food Truck Fest so popular?
A. Its festive, family-friendly atmosphere
B. Its wide assortment of delicious dishes
C. Manheim Township and its surrounding communities’ generous nature
D. All of the above
If you guessed D, you’re correct.
Another ODC Food Truck Fest, the sixth, is right around the corner. And there are no reasons to believe that this one will be any less successful than the first five.
“I can’t think of anything more fun than eating,” said Ken Mueller, ODC’s public relations and development manager. “(The Food Truck Fest is) just a very exciting time. Once you get there, the vibe is so cool that you’re going to want to hang out. People are coming and checking out foods maybe they never had before. If you come, you’re going to bump into any number of people you know. There’s stuff for the kids to do. We’re bike friendly, we’re pet friendly, we’re family friendly. It’s just a great community event.”
This year’s ODC Food Truck
Fest will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manheim Township’s Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Parking is available on surrounding streets and at Lancaster Catholic High School’s football stadium. The sponsored event, which is free, will feature 15 food trucks
from Lancaster, Columbia, New Holland, Lebanon, York, Red Lion and Mechanicsburg offering exotic cuisine from West Africa, Cambodia, Latin America, the Caribbean and India, as well as traditional favorites like ice food trucks, and the one that receives the most votes will be recognized.
All proceeds from the Food Truck Fest will go to ODC’s continuing work to provide vocational training and employment opportunities for Lancaster County adults with development disabilities and

The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will host the 156th Memorial Day service at Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, on Thursday, May 30, at 6 p.m. The service will be conducted at the Grand Army of the Republic’s soldiers’ burial plot, the final resting place for 206 men who served in the military forces of the United States during the Civil War. Joel Mutschler from the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will serve as the keynote speaker. Following the commemoration, a memorial service for Lancaster’s Civil War notables Maj. Gen. John F. and Rear Adm. William Reynolds will be held at the Reynolds family plot. The SUVCW is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of those who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, the SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, was chartered on Feb. 13, 1889, and there has been an active camp in Lancaster ever since.
at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of young people with disabilities. Aaron’s Acres is hoping to garner $1,500 in donations from the event.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by going to https://secure.givelively.org/ event/aarons-acres/aaron-s-acresnight-at-the-movies-2024.
“We’re generally looking to offer nights out for families in the community, and it also serves as a fundraiser for Aaron’s Acres,” said Kate Mullen, the director of development and community relations for Aaron’s Acres. “It’s family focused. It’s a special evening for families to come and see a movie together. The support we receive allows us to provide programs for young people with disabilities in our community.”
The Angels have been associated with Aaron’s Acres for about four years now. During that time,
they’ve supported and assisted with similar events, like bingo, Aaron’s Acres summer camp programs, crafts, games, bake sales and other fundraising activities.
“It’s young people helping young people,” said Mullen. “They brainstormed and together came up with the name. I think they felt like the term ‘angel’ kind of means they’re protecting and watching over our participants, and they felt it was an appropriate name.”
“We talk a lot about disability awareness,” Mullen continued. “It’s a great opportunity for them to come together and do community service and give back. Everywhere they go in their lives they’ll be around people who are unique and different in many ways. It’s important to appreciate that uniqueness. Maybe this experience will allow them to be more comfortable. Hopefully it’ll make them feel comfortable being active participants in their community.”
“(The Angels) are really interesting kids involved with a lot of different things,” added Mullen. “It’s interesting the kinds of things they fit into their schedules. They’re involved with a lot of other things - sports, musicals, National Honor Society. We’re there with them to show them heart and kindness. I’m really happy I get to be a part of it.”
Aaron’s Acres was established
in 1998 by a group of local families that desired better services for their children with disabilities. Today, Aaron’s Acres serves two groups of individuals with disabilities, ages 5 through 21 and ages 22 through 40, from Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, Lebanon and Cumberland counties with a variety of seasonal programs. Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lancaster County (CEF) is celebrating its 80th year of reaching children with the Good News of Jesus in the local community. Many people are familiar with the afterschool Good News Club programs that are held in the public schools, but they may not be aware that CEF also offers summer programs.
Teens and young adults complete a rigorous training program called Christian Youth in Action (CYIA) to serve with the ministry. These young people, along with CEF staff members, devote their summers to sharing the Gospel
with children. All workers and hosts of clubs must complete several required background checks to ensure the safety of all children.
This summer, CEF is partnering with four churches that will host vacation Bible school (VBS) with the theme “One Way.” VBS will be held on Mondays to Fridays. The program is open to children ages 5 to 12, and it will include Bible lessons, missionary stories, games, Christ-centered songs, crafts, and Bible verse memorization.
VBS programs will be held from July 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at Grace Baptist Church, 1899 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; from July 15 to 19

“Every year we try to make it better than the previous year,” said Mueller. “I want to generate more revenue and make it more exciting. But this is a food truck event. It’s all about the food trucks. The spotlight is on them. We want to have a really nice mix of foods. We don’t want to duplicate the cuisine.”
In addition to games, prizes, T-shirts and a DJ spinning tunes, the ODC Food Truck Fest will also offer a Touch-A-Truck display where kids can play on and have their photos taken with construction vehicles, a fire truck and police cruisers from Manheim Township. The Lancaster County Bookmobile will be on hand conducting hands-on activities.
Some 4,000 people are expected to attend. Mueller is
from pg 1
hoping the event raises $12,000.
“We want to help our clients find employment and bring more independence into their lives,” said Mueller. “We really want to make better lives for people with disabilities. We want to get them out into the community, just so they get to know people. It’s about the ability to earn a paycheck. If you can learn to do a job, find a job and get someone to pay you for it, there’s such a sense of independence and accomplishment. You can’t put a price tag on that.”
Located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, ODC was founded in 1949 and currently serves more than 40 Lancaster County adults with disabilities.

“We’ll start the bidding at ” “Will ya give me ?” “Are you all done?” “Sold!”
Those chants will provide the backdrop when Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) holds its upcoming auction. The auction will serve as a fundraiser for the private school.
LAMS’ annual live auction will take place on Friday, May 31, from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz. Breakfast will be served starting at 6 a.m. before the Saturday portion of the event.
The live auction will raise funds for LAMS’ general operating budget, which indirectly limits tuition costs and helps make LAMS’ faith-based education more affordable to families across Lancaster County.
these sponsors donated items and services to the event.
“It’s super cool to see how they’re all involved and supporting us,” said Hoffman. “It’s wonderful that they’re willing to give.”
LAMS hopes to raise $175,000 through the auction. The auction is one of only two annual fundraisers conducted by the school and the only one that directly involves the community.
“(Fundraisers) are how our school runs,” said Hoffman. “We partner with families and donors. It’s a goal of ours to be financially accessible to everyone. The auction is definitely an avenue that helps us continue doing what we are doing.”
Currently, more than 300 students from Lancaster County - not just the Lititz area - attend the school, which offers education from prekindergarten through 12th grade.

“We’re trying to include the community,” said Autumn Hoffman, director of admissions and marketing for LAMS. “It’s kind of a community outreach event. (LAMS) really emphasizes service, and this is a way to partner with the community.”
A total of 30 donated items will be auctioned off, seven on Friday evening and 23 on Saturday. With an emphasis on experiences and services, the auction items will include trips, getaways, tickets to Phillies games, beach house reservations, classes, photo sessions, tickets to a Sight & Sound Theatre performance, a pool party and dinner, a smokeless firepit, a zero-turn mower, a patio set and Adirondack chairs.
“Experiences can be more memorable (than items),” said Hoffman. “It’s a way to incorporate the family and draw people together.”
More than 50 Lancaster County businesses are sponsoring LAMS’ auction, and many of
LAMS offers students and their families scholarships and tuition assistance based on financial need.
“Our student body is comprised of a diverse group of believers,” said Hoffman. “We’re less of a Mennonite school and more of a Christian school. That’s how we’ve evolved over the years. We’re honoring Jesus. We try to emphasize that the Bible is our base, and we want to emphasize the importance of family and church. We want to equip our students with skills to lead a purposeful Christian life.”
LAMS was founded in 1978.
“We just want to show who we are,” said Hoffman. “The school started out as more conservatively Mennonite. Our core values are Christ-centered. Community is our commitment, and serving is our strength. We want to honor the Lord in all things.”
