Junior League Sponsors Aquaponics Project By Ann Mead Ash
According to Kate Lowry, a member of the Junior League of Lancaster, the organization has been looking for more ways to make a positive impact on the local community. “ We did a community impact assessment about five years ago,” explained Lowry. “We looked at challenges and issues, and we did an assessment of what the community needs and where the gaps are.” One result of that assessment is the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project. For the educational program, the group has entered into in partnership with J. E. Fritz Elementary School, The Stone Independent School, and the Lancaster Science Factory. According to Samuel Mwangi, a licensed addictions counselor, all addictions are centered in the brain of an individual. “It’s about stimulation of the brain, and it’s a matter of learning different skills for each person depending on their situation,” said Mwangi. “Drugs (of choice) come into play from a physiological perspective, but we (at CCARS) deal with addiction as a whole.” Mwangi is the lead counselor at CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County.
