Manheim Township

Aastha Horizons aims to benefit everyone

Philanthropy is universal and timeless. The act of giving back is not bound by race, ethnicity or color.

The Aastha Horizons Fund is managed and operated by a group made up of predominantly Lancaster County Indian-Asian Americans. Its mission is to help everyone in an attempt to make their home a better place to live.

“My favorite part is the philanthropy,” said Manjeet Kaur, one of the founders of the Aastha Horizons Fund and a resident of Manheim Township. “We’ve been given so much by Lancaster County, and now we want to give back. Everybody does it for different reasons. I saw my family and dad (give back). When you see enough of it, it feels like your duty.”

“Giving begins at home,” said Reema Parikha, an advisory group member who resides in East Hempfield Township. “I feel like this fund is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s amazing to see how these funds are used.”

Overseen by an advisory group and conducted in association with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), the Aastha Horizons Fund is a giving circle that raises funds

through donations and distributes them to Lancaster County nonprofits via a grant application process. The fund’s advisory group meets on a regular basis but does not operate from a brick-and-mortar office.

Translated from Indian culture, Aastha means faith, belief, trust and hope for a better tomorrow.

“Aastha is a very simple word,”

said Kaur. “As humans, we can approach people who are looking at the dawn and give them a little bit of extra hope for a better tomorrow. It’s what we want to do. We want to make a difference. We want (the fund) to continue to grow.”

Aastha Horizons Fund’s grant process is initiated with advisory group members inviting local nonprofits to apply for grants.

Once the grant applications are received, the advisory members meet as a group, discuss the nonprofits’ merits and needs and then vote on the applications.

Before a final approval is granted, the advisory group interviews officials of the nonprofits requesting the grants.

“We try to focus on organizations that are less heard of,” said

We are more alike than we are different, and those similarities transcend time. By exploring those commonalities, we come to understand our differences. St. Peter’s Preschool’s Golden Buddies program, which brings toddlers and senior citizens together in a supportive setting, isn’t about formal religious education or passing along church doctrine. It’s about people learning fromand about - people.

“My favorite part is seeing the laughter and the smiles, just seeing 4- and 5-year olds playing with Golden Buddies in their 90s,” said Laura Cali, a St. Peter’s Preschool teacher whose class is involved with the Golden Buddies program. “It’s absolutely incredible. It’s a wonderful thing to see.”

Located at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church preschool’s Golden Buddies program promotes interaction in a classroom environment between Cali’s 4- and 5-yearold students and senior citizens who are members of the church. The senior citizens come to the classroom every Thursday at 11 a.m. during the school year

for an hour of playful learning. Fun and magic ensues.

There is a one-to-one classroom ratio of students to Golden Buddies, with eight students and eight Golden Buddies.

“We don’t assign buddies. But the kids and buddies pair up on their own based on personalities,” said Cali.

“They kind of gravitate toward each other. You can always find common ground to relate to people, no matter the age.”

“I just love how excited the kids are and their older friends are,” said Heather Cramer, St. Peter’s Preschool’s director.

“The kids learn from their Golden Buddies.”

The weekly Golden Buddies hour typically begins with a game and is followed by getting-to-know-you types of conversation starters and then a craft. The session is both structured and unstructured, but generally informal.

“We cover things that are very general,” said Cali. “We’ll ask, ‘What’s your favorite color? What’s your favorite food?’ We’ll go over classroom content or touch on seasonal or holiday topics. The students are learning good manners, how to talk to people, how to relate to people. They’re learning positive interactions.”

It doesn’t take long for familiarity to creep in, and once that occurs, platonic bonds evolve.

“I don’t know that our focus is much on church traditions,” said Cali. “It’s more about friendships and getting to know people you wouldn’t normally meet.”

The intergenerational relationships have evolved

into symbiotic ones. It may be that the senior citizens benefit from the interactions as much as their younger counterparts do.

“All of the Golden Buddies are always asking if they can do it more often,” said Cramer. “Some of them bring treats when they come in.”

“It is a very joyful hour,” said Cali. “There’s lots of laughter. (The senior citizens) get such a kick out of the kids. Some of them are as thick as thieves.”

“In the beginning, when we first got it going, I wasn’t expecting every single child to connect at the level that they have,” added Cali. “The friendships have become deeper than I expected, which is fantastic. Now, (the students) count down the days to Golden Buddies day.”

The Golden Buddies program is a relatively recent initiative at St. Peter’s Preschool. But since it was formally introduced in November of 2024, the program has exceeded its planners’ expectations.

“I didn’t think the kids would get this excited,” said Cramer. “To me, that’s so important. Sometimes kids need a little more prompting. I think it’s important to realize that we are all the same.”

“The point is to foster intergenerational friendships,” said Cali. “We want to try to connect the church with the preschool. We will definitely be doing it again next year, and we’re having some of our Golden Buddies come back.”

Founded in the 1980s, St. Peter’s Preschool has a current enrollment that stands at 61 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds.

“When you walk in our doors, the kids are happy to be there,” said Cali. “It’s really a joyful place. Having the Golden Buddies come in has really enriched it. It’s neat to see that joy shared.”

Nishit Trivedi, a member of the advisory group who resides in West Hempfield Township.

“It’s not just the money,” said Rao Sankarmanchi, an advisory group member and a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We’re looking for people to partner with as volunteers. We want to help out in any way we can.”

Typically, the Aastha Horizons Fund awards grants in the $2,500 range. In 2024, the fund awarded five grants to local nonprofits, and over the course of its three-year existence, the Aastha Horizons Fund has granted more than 10 awards, including ones to Power Packs, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, the Turkish Philanthropy Funds, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Milagro House, Aaron’s Acres, Reach Out and Read of Lancaster County, Lancaster Science Factory and Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services.

“As we’re going through the grant process, the organizations are getting to know us, and they’re sharing about us,” said Rakesh Popli, a member of the advisory group and a resident of West Lampeter Township. “In

Deadline is Friday, June 6th.

three years, I feel like we’ve accomplished some significant achievements.”

“I think the word is getting out (about the Aastha Horizons Fund’s work),” said founding member Deepa Balepur, who resides in West Hempfield Township.

Aastha Horizons Fund raises money through events and private donations, some of which originate from the members of the advisory group.

“It’s a giving circle,” said Trivedi. “We have resources coming in, and the funds are managed by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and the grants are written by the community foundation. While the funds are sitting there, they are invested and managed properly.”

Near the end of 2021, Balepur was an LCCF board member when she had an idea that evolved into the Aastha Horizons Fund.

“Deepa started the process,” said Kaur. “It was her vision, and she connected people. She called me to be part of the process. I was already involved with a similar organization, but we were mostly putting out fires. What Deepa told me is, ‘We’re trying to do it as continually funding.’ That really resonated with me.”

“I was exposed to the concept of collective giving at Lancaster County Community Foundation,” said Balepur. “It was very intriguing. As I started talking to people, there were others who wanted to be engaged as well. Everybody brings different levels of expertise. It started with ‘it sounds cool,’ but it can be better if we bring other people on board.”

Salon and spa reopens in Leola

After a fire destroyed the former Mansion on Main Salon & Spa, owner Jennifer Frey had the facility rebuilt, and it has now reopened with a new name - Ember Organic Salon & Spa.

The new salon and spa, located at 119 W. Main St., Leola, is a full-service salon offering hair and nail services, as well as massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs. It also features a sauna, lounge and locker rooms.

Ember Organic Salon & Spa opened on May 10 in Leola.

Frey reported that a fire broke out in the former salon building early in the morning on Dec. 10, 2024. No one was injured in the blaze, which resulted in the building being a total loss.

As the new building was

being constructed, the salon operated out of a temporary space at 349 W. Main St., Leola.

An open house was held at the new facility on May 10. For more information, including hours of operation, or to book an appointment, visit www.ember organicssalonpa.com.

St., Lancaster, a state-ofthe-art facility dedicated to esports.

The campus will host the Esports Maker’s Lab Summer Camp, open to youths ages 10 to 17. The camp will be a full-day, hands-on experience in gaming, esports, and maker skills. Campers can choose from options like the Esports Streamer Bootcamp and Brand & Build Camp, focusing on skills such as laser engraving, 3-D printing, and shout casting - the practice of providing live commentary and analysis during competitive gaming.

The center is also available for rentals, including themed birthday parties

and gaming group rentals. The center’s equipment, including desktop gaming computers, green screens, laser engravers, and 3-D printers, was provided through the support of the PNC Foundation, United Way of Lancaster County, and the Lancaster STEM Alliance. Launched in 2023, the esports program provides inclusive, competitive, livestream gaming opportunities, as well as introductions to coding and computer programming.

For more information about Lancaster Rec’s esports programs, including registration details and facility rentals, visit www.LancasterRec.org/ Esports.
