Foster And Adoptive Parents Needed Bethanna Plans A Night At The Ballgame
s a final celebration of National Foster Care Month, which is May, Bethanna, a public adoption and foster care agency, is planning a night with the Barnstormers at the team’s home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Tuesday, June 8. The opening pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Thirty minutes prior to the start of the game, a meal featuring Hess BBQ will be held in the stadium’s Haller Pavilion for those families interested in fostering and adopting. There will be an information booth, and the event will be designed to celebrate foster families and recruit more families. The event is family-friendly, and children are welcome. “It’s a neat opportunity for interested families to talk to families who are fostering,” said Brenda Long, foster care and adoption supervisor for Bethanna, an organization that has been serving the area for nearly 30 years. Because the

ballgame is an informal event where there are breaks for conversation, Long believes those who are considering fostering will have opportunities to ask questions. Children living with foster families will be present at the event, and three have been invited to throw out first pitches at the game. “We hope the public can understand children in foster care may have special needs, and they come from hard places,” said Long. “They’re kids.” Chris Walter, permanency worker with Bethanna, which serves the Susquehanna Valley from 301 N. Duke St., Lancaster, noted that although the organization works with 25 to 30 foster families, there is still a need for more. “There’s a particular need for parents to foster teens and even to age 21 and over to help them get established as adults,” she said, adding that foster parents are encouraged to be a resource and connection for older children to provide a home base for holidays and a place to come home to.

ODC Plans Third Food Truck Fest
The Pennsylvania Dutch Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Wolf Sanctuary of PA have joined forces to hold virtual 5K and 15K events during the month of June. Horse-Shoe Trail District executive Nicole Welch reports that there is a unique connection between the two organizations. See Sanctuary pg 4

Although the 2020 Occupational Development Center (ODC) Food Truck Fest at Stauffer Park had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, remembers the 2019 event vividly. “We did well,” recalled Mueller. “More than 3,000 people (attended), and many trucks sold out of food. We had perfect weather, and everything fell into place.” Mueller is hoping for a similar experience for this year’s third annual Food Truck Fest, which will be held on Saturday, June 5, from

Landis Valley Reopens been decorated with new items from the museum’s collections. Also on the walls are panels that share the history of the building. In the museum store, a new POS system with a touchless payment system was installed using funding by a Pennsylvania Humanities Council CARES grant. The museum is working on restocking the store with items from various artisans, including new artisans. Public hours will be limited, but other hours are available by appointment. There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, reopened to the public on April 30. The agriculture and farm exhibit and the Mennonite exhibit/leather shop are open for self-guided exploration, with oneway routes marked. TPSP To Offer Theater Camp The People’s Shakespeare Project (TPSP) will offer Camp Will in-person at The Stone Independent School, 480 New Holland Pike, Suite 7101, Lancaster. With the ability to social distance and wear masks, all participants can once again experience a 3-week program of acting and Shakespeare. New Scouts BSA Girls’ Troop Founded Scouts BSA Troop 99 has a new troop for girls ages 11 to 17, as well as girls age 10 who have completed the Arrow of Light. The new group was founded with permission from Highland Presbyterian Church, Troop 99’s chartering organization. Scouts BSA Troop 99 began in 1952 and has produced over 300 Eagle Scouts. Using its own activity bus, the group camps, hikes, bikes, paddles and provides service to many organizations in its community. New members are welcome to join in time for the spring and summer camping and advancement programs. Keeping in mind the safety of all in attendance, he noted that COVID19 restrictions in place at that time will be observed with regard to masks, social distancing, and crowd size. Mueller noted, however, that with the large outdoor space and the number of hours the event will be held, crowd size should not be an issue. “We will have a sanitation station for handwashing and hand sanitizing,” noted Mueller. Organizers have planned to have up to 15 food trucks offering a variety of ethnic food items to attendees. Among the many genres that will be offered will be Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Mediterranean, and soul food. “We will have barbecued smoked meats, cheesesteak sausage fries, loaded hot dogs, and Nashville hot chicken sandwiches,” said Mueller. He listed cookie dough, milkshakes, funnel cake, popcorn, cotton candy, and waffles and ice cream among the desserts. Mueller added that he is careful not to duplicate a type of food. Wolves create strong bonds for survival. The Wolf Sanctuary of PA cares for nearly 60 wolves each day.
“(The sanctuary) is close enough to (Camp Mack) that we can occasionally hear the wolves howling at night,” reported Welch. “Whenever the wolves howl and our Cubs hear it that is really a special moment for them.” The council and sanctuary are encouraging those who wish to participate in the event to run, walk, bike, or hike the 5K or 15K distance on a track or at a trail while following social distancing guidelines. “A virtual race is a wonderful event because peo-
ple can participate from anywhere, and we are doing it more for fun than to win a prize for coming in first,” said Welch. Participants are invited to register online for a nominal fee. Registrants will receive an email with a bib they can print out and a link to the Facebook event page where they can share photos and locations from their run. Welch explained that the Scouting program, which includes more than 2,000 young people in the Lancaster-Lebanon area, encourages
giving back to the community. “The Wolf Sanctuary gets most of their funding from their tours, so when we found out they couldn’t do that (because of COVID-19 restrictions, we wanted to help),” shared Welch. The Wolf Sanctuary currently has 57 wolves according to Michelle Mancini, education coordinator. She shared that a number of them come from domestic situations. “Wolves are very loyal,” noted Mancini. “One of the biggest issues in a household setting is separation anxiety.” She explained that wolves bond fiercely with household members because in the wild, they rely on that bond to survive. “They don’t want a human out of their sight, and they develop bad behaviors and that becomes a reason for people to seek rescue.” Taking in a new wolf is dependent on a number of factors, including space, resources, and putting together companion wolves at
the sanctuary. Although the sanctuary often rescues older wolves, it has also taken in puppies. The sanctuary was founded by Bill and Barbara Darlington when they began rescuing wolves more than 40 years ago. As Welch mentioned, tours are a major source of income for the sanctuary, and the organization has not been able to draw large numbers due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We have been doing tours by reservation only,” explained Mancini, who noted that both daytime and moonlight tours are currently available for small groups. Glen Lapp Volleyball Tournament Posted For the past 11 years, volunteers have organized the Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament indoors in January at Lancaster Mennonite School. This year, due to COVID-19, the event is moving outside. The tournament will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 9 a.m. on Lancaster Mennonite School’s soccer fields on Millstream Road, off Lincoln Highway East (Route 30). The rain date is Sunday, June 13. Past years’ tournaments were limited to 40 teams, and organizers had to turn away teams. This year, there is no maximum number of teams. The tournament is named after Glen Lapp, a 1987 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School. He played volleyball at Eastern Mennonite University and coached at Lancaster Mennonite in the ‘90s. In 2010, Lapp and nine others
were killed while providing free medical assistance in a remote area of Afghanistan. The volleyball tournament honors Lapp’s life and passion for volleyball. All proceeds benefit the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Over the last 10 years, over $60,000 has been raised to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The tournament will have two divisions, one of which will be more competitive. Games will be played four against four, and each team is guaranteed to play at least eight games. Approximately 100 works of art by Ron Ettelman will be exhibited and auctioned on Thursday, June 3, at 6 p.m. at Boltz Auctions, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. A preview will be held on Wednesday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The auction is being held in connection with the retirement of Ron and his wife, Virginia. After 45 years of business, the Ettelmans recently closed the doors of Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery in Mountville. The building went to auction on May 13. The artworks to be sold in the upcoming auction are those items that remained at the Ettelmans’ building and
that they cannot store. Half of the proceeds of the auction will be donated, with 25% of sales going to the Lancaster Museum of Art and Demuth Museum and 25% going to the Ware Center. Ron described many of his works as whimsical, often with a deeper story lurking under the surface for viewers to interpret in their own way. In 2016, he previously presented a retrospective exhibit of 153 works at the Ware Center. This exhibit’s title, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” described the artist going to the studio in the basement of his farmhouse to work on his art. For more details, call Boltz Auctions at 717-392-4257.

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “ We have been around since the mid1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a oneday workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website - www.lancasterbeekeepers.org - provides a list of swarm collectors divided by location. “A swarm may sit there for 20 minutes, two hours, or two days,” said Stahl. “When you see a swarm, you want to get a beekeeper there as fast as you can.” Stahl said that beekeepers use a special bee box that smells familiar to
bees with an entrance that can be made smaller and even closed to capture bees. The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water for bees can be a controversial subject because water can be a point of disease transfer. She recommends only putting out water after several weeks of drought and then being sure to include rocks or logs for bees to keep them from drowning. “Some bees have the job of being the water collectors,” she said, noting that water can be used to cool the hive or thin honey that has crystallized for use. “A lot of people are using the venom from honeybees for medicinal purposes,” said Stahl, who noted that treatments for arthritis and Lyme disease are being studied. She noted that if one is stung accidentally, it is wise not to grab the stinger. “Use a fingernail to flick the stinger up and away,” she said. “If you squeeze, you (are injecting) the venom into you, but by flicking you remove the whole thing.” In addition to the website, information about the society may be found by searching for “Lancaster County Beekeepers Society” on Facebook.

Dutchie Dash 5K Announced The Dutchland Derby Rollers of Lancaster will host its first virtual 5K, the Dutchie Dash, in June. The virtual event can be done anytime from Tuesday, June 1, through Wednesday, June 30. Servant Stage will present a staged reading of a new, original musical called “Prodigal” by composer and playwright Tyler D. Hoover. Performances will take place at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 22; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The show will also be available to watch online from Friday, May 28, through Sunday, June 13. The community is invited to attend and be part of the development process of this musical. As a student at Ephrata High School, he participated in the Honor Choir Festival as a tenor and the LLMEA Festival. He was a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and a guest performer with the Mountaineer Men Choir at the Ephrata Middle School choral concert. He has participated in numerous school and community musical theater productions and also received paid
roles on stage and film. After graduating from high school in 2019, he relocated to Los Angeles to attend Hussian College In Studio. He traveled to New York in 2020 to play a supporting role in another independent film, “Alberto and the Concrete Jungle.” Additionally, “The Making of Visual” is an autobiographical documentary of Dweh’s life produced in collaboration with editor Tianna CamilleVillage with Dweh providing original music. The Emerald Foundation announced the awarding of a second PAsmart Advancing Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The grant, of $500,000, seeks to expand organizational services in state schools. This grant is a part of Gov. Tom Wolf’s $10.8 million initiative aiming to enrich curriculum and afterschool programs with additional science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and computer science learning opportunities. The mission is to help students develop their personal and professional skills through interactive, club-based esports experiences. The PAsmart grant will help empower new school clubs that may benefit from future-forward career explo-
ration and mentorship in STEM and computer science. The Emerald Esports clubs will be established with the assistance of intermediate units in regions throughout Pennsylvania. Grant funding will support the Emerald Foundation’s career readiness activities that emphasize esports as a learning tool for STEM and computer science. The Emerald Foundation, through its key initiative, Emerald Esports, will focus on several goals over the course of the PAsmart grant, including establishing 100 Emerald Esports clubs across Pennsylvania during 2021 and 2022, creating career-exploration opportunities in these clubs linked to Pennsylvania’s current and future in-demand occupations, and piloting a
career-exploration framework that will help schools promote students’ experiential learning and foster collaboration between career counselors, mentors, parents, and businesses. Emerald Esports has been involved in scholastic and community-based esports since 2018, reaching students across the country with tournaments and personal development opportunities. Over the next few years, the organization aims to further its impact in the area of girls in gaming, esports and autism research, and in engaging youths in underserved communities. Students at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool at College Hill in Lancaster celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by releasing 4,500 ladybugs throughout the schoolyard and back into the environment on plants, flowers and trees. Students were dressed for the occasion in the likeness of ladybugs, wearing red
and black clothing and antennae. Leading up to Earth Day, students learned that ladybugs serve as a natural pesticide by feeding on insects that could otherwise harm the health of gardens, trees and shrubs. Chesterbrook Academy teaches the importance of community and exploring

This year, the digital exhibition highlights the thesis work of 58 seniors from the animation and game art, fine art, graphic design, illustration, and photography and video departments. Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) is presenting the artwork of the Class of 2021. The exhibiting work is divided into two pillars of presentation: a digital thesis exhibition archiving each student’s capstone project and a spotlight gallery exhibition that highlights one work from each senior. The gallery exhibition has an accompanying publication which is also available online. Both exhibits gather the individual works of each member of the Class of 2021 into a shared experience, a nod to nostalgia, and a tribute to the collective spirit of the time that characterizes a unique moment in college education. “This is a remarkable and nimble class,” said Michael Molla, president of PCA&D. “They are graduating in a remarkable time and they have proven how resilient, resourceful, deft, and dexterous they are.” The senior exhibition, “Sincerely Yours, the Resilient, the Perseverant, the Tenacious, the Tired, & the Determined,” is on display at PCA&D’s Main Gallery at 204 N.
