A Passion For Helping Award-Winning Website Spreads Message For SWAN BY ANN MEAD ASH

When the SWAN website created by the team at YDOP - a digital marketing firm located in Lancaster - received a Gold award from the Horizon Interactive Awards, YDOP CEO Steve Wolgemuth was pleased. “It’s a real honor to receive that and be recognized for the good work,” said Wolgemuth. The Horizon Interactive Awards is a competition recognizing outstanding achievements in website design. But Wolgemuth was more excited about what the website can do for SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), which offers free music lessons to School District of Lancaster students affected by parental incarceration. “Any visibility we can bring to that organization … to make people aware of these children is a very positive thing for us,” said Wolgemuth. “Newsies” To Play At LBC ervant Stage, a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County, will produce “Newsies.” The Tony-award winning Disney musical, based on the 1992 motion picture, was inspired by a true story. The show features a score by Alan Menken, dancing, and a focus on the message to fight for what is right. Producers have gathered a cast of more than 40 local performers, working with a 10-piece orchestra,

S

in an energetic and family-friendly show that audience members of all ages may enjoy. “Newsies” will play at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Thursdays, June 9 and 16, at 7 p.m.; Fridays, June 3, 10, and 17, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, June 4, 11, and 18, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, June 5, 12, and 19, at 2 p.m. According to artistic director Wally Calderon, the well-known

musical is one that Servant Stage has wanted to undertake for some time. He said that he is enjoying working with the large ensemble cast as they explore the story of New York City’s newsboys at the turn of the 20th century. The cast will also include Lancaster’s Dan Deal, known for his work at Sight & Sound Theatre. Director Jonathan Bauer reported that teenagers were cast in the roles of

the newsies to preserve the authenticity of the piece. All performances will be offered as pay-what-you-will, which is part of Servant Stage’s mission to make great performances accessible to all members of the community. Reservations are required, and shows have been known to sell out. To reserve tickets, readers may visit www.ServantStage.org or call 717-455-0255.

SWAN from pg 1 Wolgemuth was first introduced to SWAN by a business coach. “ W hen I heard (SWAN’s) story, I felt a calling to help,” recalled Wolgemuth, who noted that he was spurred to action by hearing that at that time 4,000 school-age children within a short distance of downtown Lancaster were impacted by parental incarceration. “When I learned about the trauma associated with that for children and the negative impact that trauma can have, that raised my level of passion,” he said. Wolgemuth also learned of the positive impact SWAN’s program of music lessons

and mentorship can have. He joined the board and got involved. Wolgemuth was excited to see SWAN grow from offering only private instruction to group lessons, which involved choruses, rhythm bands, and ukuleles. “That enabled (SWAN) to reach and connect with many more children,” said Wolgemuth, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions set the program back, but not for long. “We kept pressing forward, and (SWAN is) ready to open up a new day and get back to where we were,” he said. In 2021, YDOP’s team sought a project that would help it continue to contribute

to the Lancaster community that team members care about. “We looked at (SWAN’s) marketing and web presence, and we thought, ‘This is something we know how to do,’” reported Wolgemuth. “That’s how the website rebuild came along.” The site was rebuilt for SWAN by YDOP at no charge. SWAN posted a blog about the effort that read “YDOP’s marketing team excelled at building SWAN’s new site. They created a fresh look that is in perfect harmony with the quality content.” Wolgemuth noted that the award-winning work was jumpstarted by the importance of helping those who cannot help themselves.

“(You are inspired) when you discover a sector of the population that is so under the radar and you realize if you don’t help, no one else is waiting in line to do it,” he said. “(These children) didn’t do anything to bring this into their lives, and if we can’t help this group of children in trauma, what kind of people are we? That attracted my team to get involved and really care.” Readers who would like to know more about SWAN may visit https://swan4 kids.org. Searching For A Snake’s Family As the president and director of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Jesse Rothacker is used to unusual calls. So he wasn’t surprised when he got a request on May 1 to search a barn in Manheim for a mysterious snake that had shown up in the same place four days in a row. He was surprised with what he found, however. “It was a California kingsnake, a nonvenomous species from the West Coast,” he said. Knowing the snake is not one to be found in the wild in Pennsylvania, Rothacker suspects the reptile is a pet, and he’s actively searching for its owner. Rothacker’s daughter, Viola, temporarily named the snake Zeebee while the owner search is underway. “He has a black and white pattern that she thought sort of looked like a zebra, so she came up with ‘Zeebee,’” Rothacker noted. The small snake measures just over a foot long. “If I had to guess, I would say it probably hatched in the summer of 2021,” Rothacker explained. The snake likely hibernated through the winter and recently woke up. He doesn’t think the kingsnake has traveled far from its home, but he can’t be totally sure. “It most likely wouldn’t have moved more

than a few hundred yards are probably worried sick from its original location,” he about him,” he said. Rescuing a snake is just part of a typical day’s work for Rothacker. He’s rescued snapping turtles stuck in concrete basins and snakes trapped in window wells.
