Ecuador’s diverse terrain serves as Township classroom

Itwas more than just some field trip. It was a class trip deeply focused on service and learning and diversity.

With the power to alter existences, it was the trip of a lifetime.

Recently, 43 sophomores, juniors and seniors from Manheim Township High School completed a special journey to the South American continent. From March 15 to 22, the students traveled to Ecuador to explore regions of the Amazon River and Andes Mountains as part of a global student exchange program.

While there, the students received firsthand instruction on environmental science and conservation. For most, it was an eyeopening experience, but perhaps the most important lessons were the ones they learned about themselves.

“Our students were inspired by what they saw abroad, enough to apply what they learned when they came back home,” said T ammy Sweeney, a Manheim Township social studies teacher and a chaperone for

With new survivor center, North Star Initiative grows its mission

A new survivor center is a sign of progress for North Star Initiative (NSI). It also represents progress in the war on human trafficking.

North Star Initiative, a local, faith-based nonprofit focused on rescuing young women who are survivors of human trafficking, continues to settle into its new survivor center. After North Star raised funds for the project in 2021, the construction of the new building began in January of 2022 and was completed at the end of last year.

“Modern-day slavery is real,” said

Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative’s director of development. “It’s happening, and it’s happening in Lancaster County. It’s important to be educated in order to be able to help. Ultimately, we want to be able to help as many people as we can. We call them ‘survivors’ and don’t label them as ‘victims.’”

The new survivor center will allow North Star Initiative to help more survivors, more completely. Built adjacent to North Star’s The Harbor, the survivor center houses North Star’s offices, administrative space, therapeutic areas and classrooms. The new building also allows See North Star pg 3

the trip. “If we learn this knowledge and don’t apply it, it loses some value. This is the type of trip that changes our students’ worldview and their place in it. It helps them realize the effect they have on it.”

In Ecuador, the students engaged in service activities like sustainable farming, restoration projects and planting trees. It was the type of hands-on learning that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom.

“Spending time in Ecuador shifted my perspective on life in many ways,” said Manheim Township senior Alison Penner. “Hiking into the crater of Quilotoa reminded me of the vastness of nature and my place in it, something I often f orget after spending months in the classroom. Visiting the Guayusa Runa people, an indigenous group, encouraged me to prioritize introspection and connection with others, practices that tend to be dismissed in the day-today business of high school. Seeing the pride the artisans at the market took in their work inspired me to take pride in and put more time into what I do.”

Salvation Army seeks to foster spirit for giving back

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ mission is to do the most good. That includes financial aid for

county students seeking to further their educations at college.

scholarships to 20 seniors from 13 Lancaster County high schools. The students formally accepted their scholarships at a special awards dinner on April 27 at Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Recipients and their high schools were Nicole Chen, Penn Manor; Mina Cooper, Dayspring Christian Academy; Savannah Henschel, Warwick; Natalie Klecker, Anchor Christian Academy; Ethan Lin, Hempfield; Kieran McFall, Penn Manor; Caitlyn McGough, Penn Manor; See Salvation Army pg 4

There are just as many ways to teach as there are to learn. But perhaps the most effective is the one that combines methods that support one another.

“It was interesting to see how the Guayusa Runa people used many different parts of the forest to build their houses, set their tables, and many other things that we presume can only be done with modern tech-

nology,” said Manheim Township junior Owen Mark Shelton. “It got me thinking of small changes I can make here that can have large impacts and on how I can educate others to make those same environmentally friendly choices.”

Sweeney said that before the onset of the pandemic Manheim Township had sponsored similar international service excursions.

Program to focus on native plants

St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, will host a second program in its “Conversation Around the Corner” series on Tuesday, May 23. “Creating Yearround Interest With Native Plants” will be presented by Laura Wash, Master Gardener apprentice, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Some gardeners wonder how to sustain year-round interest in their gardens when many perennials bloom only for a few weeks at a time. This presentation shares how

to select plants thoughtfully to extend a garden’s bloom times and how to find other ways to appreciate plants beyond their flowers. Although the ideas discussed apply to all perennials, featured examples will be native plants well suited for year-round interest in Lancaster County. An introduction to the many benefits of gardening with native plants will be included. This program is free and open to the community. For more details, call 717-394-9607.

Discussion forum sets sessions

The Exploring Growing Together Discussion Forum will hold sessions on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lititz United Methodist

Grand Opening Celebration

“This was definitely hands-on learning and experimental learning,” said Sweeney. “As educators, we teach our kids in classrooms. But when they get opportunities to

apply what they’re learning and immediately see its impact, it’s special. The classroom is somewhat passive. This type of learning is active.”

Church, 201 E. Market St. Participants will gather in Room 103 on the church’s lower level.

On May 25 and June 1, led by certified lay minister Linda Van Til, the group will discuss “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and “Maya Angelou: A Biography of an Award-Winning Poet and Civil Rights Activist” by Donna Brown Agins.

On June 8, 15, and 22, Van Til will lead a DVD viewing and discussion of “Iron Jawed Angels,” the true story of suffragist Alice Paul and other activists who reinvigorated the women’s suffrage movement before the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

On June 29 to July 27, the group will spotlight “The Walk,” a series by Richard Paul Evans, led by Shanna Boley.

Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussion. Masks are optional for attendees.

The Harbor to concentrate more on the daily living needs of its survivors, increasing its resident capacity from 10 to 18.

“We’d really like The Harbor to just be a safe space,” said Esbenshade. “But we also had a desire to increase our capacity. We want our survivors to be able to trust again, to become whole again.”

North Star’s program takes three to 12 months to complete and is designed to support the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of trafficked women between the ages of 18 and 35. Esbenshade said that North Star serves young women from across the United States and that some of its current survivors

Church sets basement sale

Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will host its annual spring basement sale on Saturday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to noon. Items will include household goods, tools, office furniture, jewelry, seasonal décor, lamps, puzzles, books and a one-of-a-kind lap robe. Hot dogs and coffee will be available for on-site consumption, while pulled pork barbecue will be offered for takeout.

During the event, the churchsponsored Boy Scout Troop 4 will sell chicken barbecue dinners at the rear of the church. Buyers will have the option of either whole chickens or half-chickens with their dinners. Attendees should enter the sale area through the front stairs or via the accessible ramp at the back of the building.

are from Lancaster County.

“We get asked all the time, ‘Why don’t people just leave?’” said Esbenshade. “Sometimes the victim falls in love with their trafficker.”

Founded in 2010, North Star Initiative’s The Harbor is believed to be Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of human trafficking. North Star Initiative, which is located in Lititz, created its own inhouse curriculum based on human trafficking awareness, the teaching of coping skills and life skills training.

“Without proper therapy, survivors aren’t really rescued; they’re not really freed,” said Esbenshade.

“Human trafficking has been around for a long time, but only over the

last 10 years has it been brought out and been talked about. The education piece is very important to us. Our survivors do have voices, and we want to make sure they use their

voices in a positive way. But it takes healing and restoration.”

Library Friends set Big Book Sale

The Friends of Lancaster Public Library will host the 68th annual Big Book Sale on Monday to Wednesday, May 22 to 24, in the former Bon-Ton building at Park City Center, 600 Park City Center, Lancaster.

The book sale will be open on May 22 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and May 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Items will be half price on May 24.

The book sale will mark its fourth and final year in the former BonTon building, and with more than 150,000 square feet, customers have lots of room to spread out while browsing more than 250,000 used books and thousands of other items, including vinyl records, sheet music, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs. Individually priced books, including collectible and current fiction and nonfiction, will be for sale. New this

year, thanks to a recent donation, the library will feature more than 100 collectible dolls along with approximately 200 doll-collecting books. In addition to books, there will be multiple tables of puzzles and board games.

Credit cards are accepted, parking is free, and Park City Center offers a variety of on-site eating options.

After a record-breaking sale in 2022, Ron Adams has returned as chair of the library benefit book sale. Adams hopes to recruit community volunteers to help with book sale setup and teardown, which will involve transporting and unpacking over 2,000 boxes of books and moving dozens of tables. McCaskey; Savannah Stauffer, Ephrata; Alana Stoltzfus, Lancaster Mennonite; Hagen Supeck, Lampeter-Strasburg; Lily Troutman, Elizabethtown; Avante Webb, J.P. McCaskey; and Hanna Weller, Cocalico. Each student received $2,000 in scholarship monies.

“Our mission is to help people in need,” said Shady Boules, the operations and development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”

To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demonstrate a financial need. After the students submit a 500-word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.

“We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t

cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”

Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.

“We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.

“The Salvation Army is here for everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”

Nearly half a million served

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.

Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.

Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were

HELP WANTED General

closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently. Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township,
