A Proper Retirement Township Officers Place Flag Box At Grocery Store BY ANN MEAD ASH
anheim Township Police Officer Mark Shivers is a member of the Patriotic Order Sons of America, a fraternal organization with 14 camps in Pennsylvania and its headquarters in Valley Forge. “The main focus is patriotism and the promotion of patriotism,” said Shivers. Shivers

He noted that he has never seen a collection box in Manheim Township. In early January, he shared

and fellow officer Lucas Starsinic are aiming to promote patriotism by encouraging the proper retirement of tattered American flags. To that end, they have worked together and partnered with Oregon Dairy to place a tattered flag collection box outside the door at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz. The box was officially placed in March. Shivers was involved in placing a

his thoughts with Chief of Police Tom Rudzinski, who liked the idea and suggested Shivers reach out to Oregon Dairy to see if the grocery store would be willing to have the box located there. Having secured a location for the collection box, Shivers turned to Starsinic. “Officer Starsinic is quite a woodworker in his free time, so I asked him to build a box,” recalled Shivers. Starsinic completed the box in February, and by March 24, it had been placed at Oregon Dairy. What astonished both officers was how quickly the red, white, and blue box began filling up with tattered flags. In the first three weeks the box was available, nearly 1,000 flags were deposited. The officers check the receptacle weekly and have received more than 400 flags in one week alone. “The box overflows at times,” said Starsinic. “ We will take any tattered American flag,” said Shivers, who noted that even historic American flags may be deposited in the box. For now, the flags are being stored at the police station, but plans are underway to hold a proper retirement ceremony, possibly at Oregon Dairy. Shivers noted that an event may be planned around the ceremony. Retirement policy for an American flag recommends that when the flag is worn beyond repair, it should be burned in a simple manner with dignity and respect. Shivers predicts an increase in the number of flags that will be received around Memorial Day and Independence Day. “There aren’t many organizations that do this,” he said, noting that many people have flags that are tattered and they know the flags should not be thrown away. “They put it away in a corner somewhere until they hear of something like this,” he said, adding that when a grocery store trip is required, people will remember to bring the flags and put them in the box. More information about the police department is available at www.manheimtownship.org.

Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while
others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of

strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a wellsocialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their
owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! If interested in adopting Ben, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.
Meet Eden! This senior lady is available to be adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. She came to the shelter as a stray and now is longing for a new life of luxury. Eden is hoping to find her furever home soon because shelter life doesn’t suit her. Spring Into History - Take Two BY ANN MEAD ASH
Gina Yoder, one of the cochairs of the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) Lititz Spring Into History Festival, has fond memories of the inaugural event in 2019. “We held the first one, and it was so successful, we decided to duplicate it,” said Yoder, who, along with brothers Melvin and Paul Miller, is organizing the 2022 event. Paul noted that the 2019 event ran smoothly. “People couldn’t believe it was our first one,” he said, adding that seniors appreciated the compact setup and the ease in visiting the displays. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, this year’s LHF Lititz Spring Into History Festival will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place inside the 1792 Johannes Mueller
House and throughout the Mary Oehme Gardens, located at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. “It’s a one-day living history event,” said Yoder, who pointed out that the festival transforms the Mueller House and all the gardens into an 18thcentury artisan market green, where artisans dressed in period clothing sell their handmade items. “More than 20 artisans are coming,” said Paul, who noted that among those will be a milliner, who makes hats; a blacksmith; a whitesmith, who makes Colonial lamps and utensils; soap makers; and an herbalist. “We will have a Conestoga wagon, weather-permitting,” said Paul, noting that Art Reist will bring the wagon and that Art’s son will be the blacksmith. Additional artisans will demonstrate tin smithing, chair caning, bobbin lace weaving, tape looming, pottery, and wood
utensil carving. Flax fiber experts will be on-site, as will members of the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild. “Everyone will be in period clothing,” noted Paul. “There will be close to 50 of us in period clothing, which makes it really fun,” added Yoder. Visitors will have the chance to learn to play old-fashioned games like graces, hopscotch, and roll the hoop. Yoder reported that locally known treats like Moravian sugar cake and meadow tea will be available. Brewster’s Barb-B-Que will bring a food truck to the venue, and a local entity will provide coffee. The Lancaster County Folk Music and Fiddle Society will be on-site to play live music. Yoder said that inspiration for the original festival came from a similar event that was attended by Yoder and the Millers, who serve as LHF tour
guides. “We approached the board of directors in 2018 and asked if we could hold one,” recalled Yoder. “Our town is all about history, and we have this great (historical) organization.” The group received permission to hold the first Spring Into History Festival in 2019. “We had a limited budget, and we don’t charge admission or the artisans (for space),” Yoder reported, adding that organizers hoped to attract up to 300 visitors, but they estimate that upward of 800 attended. One addition from the first event is a fundraising opportunity that will involve prizes and giveaways of locally donated items. Attendees may also visit the Lititz Museum and gift shop. The event will be held rain or shine. PA residents scramble to get State Silver Bank Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because they are the only Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. “The phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone will be trying to get them while they still can,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars in 1947 and there
can never be any more which moves them into the collectible coin status. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Roll is a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents and non-state residents must pay full price if any remain. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Bank Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.
Q GOT ‘EM: Residents all across Pennsylvania who get their hands on these State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars some dating back to the early 1900’s so everyone who wants them better hurry.
Only State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value starting at 7:30 am today STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls per PA resident has been imposed SILVER: One of the last Silver coins minted for circulation
STATE MINIMUM: Of just $39 per coin set by National Mint and Treasury
LAST MINTED: Minted in Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco
FACTS:
ENLARGED TO SHOW DETAIL: Year varies 1916-1947
RARELY SEEN: Minted by the U.S. mint in the early 1900’s
HOW TO CLAIM THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE BANK ROLLS If you are a Pennsylvania State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB4582
Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:
Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberty Half Dollars were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. So there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:
It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberty Half Dollars date back to the early 1900’s and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know Walking Liberties are collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
Why are so many Pennsylvania residents claiming them:
Because they are the only Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design, everyone who wants their share better call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s publication. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars dating back to the early 1900’s. Best of all the Bank Rolls have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents who beat the deadline only. That means Pennsylvania residents cover only $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls for the next 2 days.
How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:
Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB4582 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.
F083901
PENNSYLVANIA - “Pennsylvania residents get first dibs. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. Beginning at precisely 7:30 am this morning State of Pennsylvania Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “But here’s the good news. The Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents only and non-state residents must pay full price if any Bank Rolls remain,” Lynne confirmed This is important to note. “These are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist. You can’t get them at banks or credit unions or the Government since they do not produce State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls. In fact, you can only get them bearing the exclusive State Restricted Design and rolled this way directly from National Mint and Treasury,” Lynne explained. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Sealed Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident while they still can,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars found inside the Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are 90% pure silver so Pennsylvania residents who get their hands on them will be glad they did,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because state residents who miss the deadline and non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “U.S. Gov’t issued coins like these are 90% pure silver and a favorite of dealers, collectors and the like,” Lynne said. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So the only thing readers need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the State TollFree Hotlines printed in today’s publication,” Lynn said. Q
