Manheim Township

is the key. Communication possesses the power to connect people, ideas and services.

By reinstituting its Coffee with a Commissioner program, Manheim Township is opening the lines of communication. With it, the township also hopes to foster transparency, trust and good will.

On the third Saturday of every second month, Coffee with a Commissioner will provide township residents an opportunity to informally interact one on one with their local elected officials. Conducted in

the public meeting room at the municipal office, 1840 Municipal Drive, Lancaster, Coffee with a Commissioner will give citizens a chance to ask questions, make suggestions and raise concerns about all things Manheim Township.

The initial installment of Coffee with a Commissioner will be held on Saturday, May 20, between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Each session will be attended by two of Manheim Township’s five commissioners.

“Communication is the most important thing,” said Donna DiMeo, president of the Manheim Township board of commissioners.

“Your local government has the

most impact on your neighborhood. If you can’t attend meetings on a regular basis, it’s a way to find out what’s going on in your community. This is your chance, your opportunity, to come out and give your opinion, because we do listen.”

Coffee with a Commissioner was initially introduced in 2021 and enjoyed a fruitful run that lasted more than a year. After public attendance waned in August of 2022, the program took a ninemonth hiatus.

The reinstatement of Coffee with a Commissioner demonstrates the level to which the board regards the importance of open communication.

“I think people are busy,” said DiMeo, who’s in her 10th year of serving on the Manheim Township board of commissioners. “Right now, things are going very well in our township. People are happy. For people to come out, there has to be something to talk about.”

“ We want people to come and get involved,” continued DiMeo. “We want to know what people want. It’s to hear the positives and negatives, maybe things we need to work on. It’s kind of our review.”

“ We will be talking about the things residents want to talk about,” said DiMeo. “It’s for people who can’t make meetings or don’t want to talk publicly at regular meetings. We also want people to know what we offer. It’s so important for people to figure out what’s going on in their community.”

The board of commissioners’ regular meetings are conducted at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at the Manheim Township Municipal Office.

“ We (the commissioners) are responsible for pretty much everything that goes on in Manheim Township,” said DiMeo. “We have a fiduciary responsibility to please our residents to the best of our abilities. We budget all tax dollars that come into our township. That’s our biggest responsibility.”

No one goes it alone. That’s why healthy family relationships provide structure for our society. Bethany Christian Services is all about healthy families - conventional families, extended families, blended families. Even the nonprofit organization’s fundraisers revolve around families.

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9,at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

“For me, the people who make up my family may not all be blood relatives,” said Dawn Tluczek, who’s in charge of church and donor engagement for Bethany Christian Services of Lancaster. “For some people who are single, it’s their cat or their dog. It’s the people who surround us and who have our backs. We are very involved with foster care and adoption. It’s who you go through life with.”

created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and din-

ner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “W hether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epc golfouting.com/register.

Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger set

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 30th annual National Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 13. Lancaster County letter carriers will pick up nonperishable food donations during their routes. All donations collected will be donated to local food pantries.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is timed to resupply local food pantries when they are usually depleted and entering the summer with low supplies. Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items, place them in a bag, and leave the bag in or around their mailbox the morning of May 13.

The top requested nonperishable food items are cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili, and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned meats or fish, beans (canned or dry), and shelf-stable milk that

Concert to feature Westminster Concert Bell Choir

Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB) will host a bonus Starlight Tea Concert featuring the Westminster Concert Bell Choir on Sunday, May 14, at 7 p.m.

Conducted by Kathleen Ebling Shaw, the 15-member choir is composed of undergraduate and graduate students at Westminster Choir College and other students at Rider University. The choir uses eight octaves of handbells. Many of the bells are made of bronze, and they range in weight from 4 ounces to 11 pounds. The choir also uses the large Basso Profundo aluminumcast bells that are a new phenomenon in handbell ringing. The choir supplements its handbell set with a six-octave set of Malmark Choirchime instruments.

The group’s holiday performances have been heard annually on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today,” and the choir has performed at Carnegie Hall twice during the Christmas season. Most

recently, the choir joined singer Josh Groban, appearing at NBC’s nationally televised lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

The choir’s spring program that will be performed at Lancaster COB is titled “Despite the Storm: A Reflection on Hope, Perseverance and Resilience.” The ensemble will perform original works, transcriptions of light classics, hymn tunes, folk tunes and more.

On Tuesday, May 16, Bethany Christian Services of Lancaster is sponsoring its inaugural in-person Go Further for Family walk/run at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The event will be held at Pavilion 1 at Long’s Park and will begin at 12:30 p.m., with registration at noon.

Registration rates are reduced for groups of individuals, and participants are encouraged to solicit sponsorships from businesses, family members and friends. Participants will receive a Tshirt and goodie bag, and bikes and pets are welcome.

“Our organization is all about family preservation,” said Tluczek. “Everything revolves around the family.

(The event is) an opportunity for families to walk together and just spend time together, talking with one another and engaging one another. It’s a time to put phones away. There’s something cool about family time.”

“We just want people to have a better understanding of who we are and see what we do,” continued Tluczek. “We’re very involved and engaged in our community. If one family becomes a foster family, it would be a success. There are a lot of organizations out there doing great things, and we’re one of them.”

After virtually introducing the Go Further for Family walk/run during the pandemic, Tluczek said she’s

hoping for 150 participants for the event’s initial in-person staging. The Go Further for Family walk/run is part of a national initiative to support vulnerable children and families.

May is National Foster Care Month.

“The hope is you always want to get bigger each year,” said Tluczek. “Eventually, I’d like to see hundreds, even thousands, come out. I don’t think the community knows enough about Bethany Christian Services. If one person can be touched and reached, hopefully the word spreads.”

Established in 1984, Bethany Christian Services operates out of its global offices in Grand Rapids, Mich., and also sponsors

programs in Harrisburg, York, State College and Reading. Bethany Christian Services focuses on adoption, foster care, parenting, pregnancy, the strengthening of families and refugees and immigrants.

“In Pennsylvania, there are 2,000 to 3,000 kids looking for families, and to us, that’s unacceptable,” said Tluczek. “There are kids who really need us. They are not bad kids, but they have no other families. It just takes someone with a heart.”

For additional information about the Go Further for Family walk/run, go to https://runsignup.com/Race /PA/Lancaster/Central PennsylvaniaGoFurtherFor Familywalkrun.

refreshments to contribute to the spread.

WEAA was an all-volunteer, nonprofit ambulance association founded in 1973. It started with one ambulance housed in a garage in the rear of Millersville Fire Company

and grew to a fleet of four rigs and a building at 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. WEAA was replaced by Lancaster EMS (LEMSA) around 2007 or 2008. The building was given to LEMSA, and paid crews replaced the volunteers.
