Manheim Township

As recreational activity, water polo’s making a splash

The Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning (MTRPP) Department recognizes that everyone is unique and that everyone has different interests. That’s why it wants to offer a variety of programs, including water polo.

“I think it gives kids an outlet to try something they haven’t tried before,” said Matt Hutchison, Manheim Township’s assistant director of recreation and aquatics director. “A lot of our programs are like that. It’s an opportunity to learn a new game or sport, and you might pick up a new friend along the way.”

MTRPP sponsors and organizes two instructional and recreational water polo programs. The first is conducted indoors at the pool at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), 115 Blue

Streak Blvd., Lancaster, from March to May, while the other is held outdoors at Overlook Park Pool, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 9 to the end of July.

There is a fee involved with MTRPP’s water polo program. For more information or to sign up, go to www.manheimtownship .org or call 717-290-7180.

“(The program) gives youth of all ages a chance to learn the game,” said Hutchison. “It’s a lot of instructional time and learning the rules. It’s a recreational program. It’s really conducive to beginners and learners.”

MTRPP’s water polo program is designed for both township and non-township youths, boys and girls age 14 through college students. The two-hour sessions consist of learning fundamentals, the rules of the game and basic

strategies, as well as putting those basics into practice in the form of scrimmages. But participants do not compete against clubs or teams outside of Manheim Township.

About 13 youths were involved with MTRPP’s water polo program

at MTHS this spring, and typically the rec department’s summer water program attracts 15 to 20 participants. Chris Flores serves as the program’s instructor.

MTRPP has been sponsoring its water polo programs for about five or six years now.

“It’s kids who can swim and want something different from the swim team,” said Hutchison. “It’s something new that they can’t get anywhere else. There’s a curiosity piece to it. People who play need to be really good swimmers and need endurance and strength. You can’t

For more than three decades, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has rolled through the county, lifting spirits and raising funds for local children battling critical illnesses. The 36th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 10. It will kick off at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. While truck parking and driver registration will run from 6 to 10 a.m., the public is invited to a Family Fest from

9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m.

In the past, the convoy has been held on Mother’s Day, but organizers made the decision to move the event to the day before the holiday in the hopes of improving attendance, enhancing volunteer availability and encouraging more participation from drivers and wish families.

“Everything else that folks love about the event remains unchanged,” said Lori Dietrich, Make-A-Wish director of development for Lancaster County.

The annual Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K was established in 2017 to benefit Lancaster city youths. Since then, the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s fundraiser has really “gotten rolling”; it’s really “taken off.”

“It’s really a fun, family day,” said Amy Lewis, who’s been a member of the Rotary of Lancaster’s board of directors for two years. “We encourage families to come. There’s music that gives it a classic car vibe. It’s

a chance to explore Lancaster Airport in a way you don’t usually get, support the Rotary and support this amazing cause.”

The Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K is part car show, part running competition and part airplane show. The sixth edition of the event

will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz.

The day will begin at 8 a.m. with the running of the 5K over a fairly flat course on the grounds of Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz. More than 100 runners are expected to compete.

Runners can register at https:// runsignup.com/Race/PA/Lititz/ WheelsWingsFestival5K or on-site, beginning at 7 a.m. on the day of the race. The deadline to receive a

discounted fee is Friday, May 9.

The car and plane shows will then take center stage at 9 a.m. Nearly 300 vehicles are expected to be on display - classic automobiles, futuristic imports, motorcycles and trucks - and prizes will be awarded in 16 different categories, while spectators will get an opportunity to vote for the people’s choice award.

Owners can register their vehicles by searching for “Rotary Club of Lancaster Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K” at www.eventbrite. com or on-site the day of the event.

realize $40,000 in proceeds, which will be donated to the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s Summer Youth Experience program, which is supported by United Way of Lancaster County. The program is designed to benefit Lancaster city youths ages 5 through 17 through activities that teach leadership and aim to help prevent the “summer slide” that can occur between school years.

Wednesday at noon at Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, was founded in 1915 and currently includes 103 members.

“The Rotary Club of Lancaster has a rich history of helping in Lancaster County,” said Lewis. “We’ve become entrenched in the community, especially for at-risk youth. Wheels and Wings is just another way to do that.”

The plane show portion of the day will feature a display of World War II Warbirds presented by Capital Wing, Commemorative Air Force. Pennsylvania State Police and Life Lion helicopters are expected to be on hand, and tours of the aircraft will be made available.

The Wheels and Wings Festival is free to attend for spectators, but a fee to park will be charged.

“We used to do a fundraiser at (Franklin & Marshall) College,” said Lewis. “But we picked this up, and it took off. It has certainly grown. One of the things that’s grown is the number of planes we’ve been able to get. I think people see these planes, look at them and remember them from their history books. It’s all different kinds of planes.”

The event’s mood will be enhanced by live music, five food trucks serving breakfast and lunch, door prizes, games, a children’s area and vendors. More than 1,000 guests are expected to attend.

Organizers of the Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K are aiming to

“The Rotary has a long history of working with the School District of Lancaster,” said Lewis. “We’re trying to bridge that (summer) gap so students can retain from year to year. It’s an area where some kids have fallen behind. We learned that some kids were struggling over the summer. It’s meant to build academic skills and build confidence.”

Living the motto of “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Lancaster engages in fundraisers and community activities to benefit the 4-H Club of Lancaster County, a youth exchange and host family program in conjunction with the School District of Lancaster, Power Packs food program in Lancaster, Preserve Planet Earth and the Salvation Army. The Rotary Club of Lancaster, which meets every

“We live by a four-way test, ‘Is it the truth? Is it fair? Is it going to build goodwill? Is it going to be beneficial?’” added Lewis. “Everything we do runs through the four-way test. We want to benefit as many people as possible. I think that’s what’s kept us flourishing for more than a hundred years.”

Westminster Presbyterian Church plans concert

Community members are invited to conclude their Mother’s Day celebrations with an evening concert of beloved hymns sung by the choirs of Westminster Presbyterian Church, accompanied by full orchestra, on Sunday, May 11, at 6 p.m.

The concert will include 50 singers and 45 instrumentalists, and the audience will be able to join in on some of the verses. Hymns will include “It is Well with My Soul,” “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” and “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” Westminster’s director of music and organist Frank Dodd and director of choirs Floyd Rawleigh have chosen hymns by noted arrangers such as Dan Forrest, Duane Funder-

burk, Robert Hobby, Albert Travis and Mack Wilberg. The orchestra will present additional music, including “The Great Adventure: Prologue” from the Steven Curtis Chapman recording, composed by J.A.C. Redford.

This year’s concert, closing Westminster’s 2024-25 Music Series, is a culmination of hymns presented during worship services from September through August. For each of the past four years, the Music Ministry of the church has published a Hymn of the Month booklet. Dodd chooses 12 hymns early in the summer, and the music staff writes accompanying historical, musical and spiritual

Open Streets Lancaster slated

The Lancaster Recreation Commission (Lancaster Rec), in partnership with the City of Lancaster and Lancaster Bikes, will host the 10th annual Open Streets Lancaster on Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Since its launch in 2014, Open Streets has focused on encouraging active lifestyles and strengthening community ties. For one day, Lancaster’s streets will transform into a car-free playground where residents can bike, rollerblade, skate, walk, and run; any form of active transportation is encouraged.

The event will include dozens of community vendors, nonprofits, food trucks, live music, and interactive activities for people of all ages. Last year, Open Streets featured gymnastics instruction, martial arts, skateboarding, and bike repair stations.

The Family Fest will feature fun for people of all ages, Dietrich shared. Activities will include carnival-style games with prizes, costumed characters, entertainment from a DJ and a community expo.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase a home-style chicken dinner inside the auction building. Meals will include a barbecued chicken thigh, green beans, cheesy potatoes, a roll and butter, applesauce, a cookie and a drink. Dinners will be available for purchase on the day of the event until sold out. A dozen food trucks, including The Pretzel Spot Cafe, Mocha Motion Coffee, Philly Cheesesteak Co. On the Roll and Holy Smoked Meats, will also be on-site.

Funds will also be raised through an online auction that will begin on Saturday, May 3, and will conclude at noon on May 10.

“Items include gift cards, experiences, merchandise and more,” Dietrich said, noting that the auction will complement basket giveaways offered on-site at the Family Fest. “All baskets and auction items will be available for pickup from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 10 at the auction building. For those that cannot pick up at that time, alternative arrangements will be made.”

Last year’s convoy raised more than $442,000 to support the efforts of Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

“The 2025 goal is $500,000,” Dietrich remarked. “Anyone can help

support granting wishes in the community by making a donation.”

Since 1990, more than 12,000 trucks have driven in the convoy, and the event has raised close to $10 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

After the convoy leaves the auto auction, it will proceed along a 26-mile route through Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. Many of the trucks will carry wish kids along for the ride.

“There is a quiet zone this year on Cloverleaf Road for our convoy

be a poor swimmer and be a water polo player.”

“A lot of these kids have never played water polo before,” added Hutchison. “We have enough kids to run the program. But if we had more kids, we might be able to do more with the program; it could evolve into something else.”

Water polo is an aquatic sport played in an all-deep pool between teams each consisting of seven players - six field players and one goalie. The players swim or tread water and employ passing, teamwork, shooting and strategy to score goals.

fans that would appreciate a quieter experience,” Dietrich said.

Drivers can still register to take part in the truck convoy. There is a fee for registering, and fundraising is optional but encouraged.

“We are also still in need of volunteers to assist with the day’s event, including truck parking, working the carnival games, helping at driver registration and more,” Dietrich commented. “It takes nearly 200 volunteers to have a safe and successful truck convoy for all to enjoy.”

in Lancaster County or District III. There are currently seven boys’ water polo teams in the state sanctioned by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.

“When people think of a pool, they might not think of water polo,” said Hutchison. “We think it’s a neat little program. We’d like to see it grow. It might not be the type of entertainment that you’re looking for. It’s got its own little niche. People want to know what it is and how to play it.”

MTRPP’s mission involves providing recreational opportunities for all 44,000 of its residents and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The department sponsors more than 30 youth programs.

“(Water polo is) similar to our other youth programs because it promotes the instructional and recreational side of sports,” said Hutchison. “For all of our programs, we’re trying to add value to the lives of the residents of Manheim Township. We want to give them what makes the best sense for them. We try to offer a variety of things. There’s a lot here. You’ve just got to figure out what’s for you.”
