At PA CareerLink, Lancaster County Goes to Work

On average, Americans spend 15 years and three months of their natural lives working, a total of some 90,000 hours. For some people, a job is work. For some individuals, employment is a career.

PA CareerLink Lancaster County caters to both groups of people and

helps individuals to navigate this critical portion of their lives.

“It depends on the individual,” said Chris Roggenbaum, who’s been the site administrator at PA CareerLink Lancaster County for three years. “Some people may say they have a job. For me, my job is part of my career. It’s part of my path. Some people are looking for jobs. A lot of times, people put

their identities into whether they have a job or a career.”

The category is: “Addictions for $200.”

The answer: God and human interaction. The question: What are the two most important components of recovery?

Pastor Rob Weatherholtz has never appeared on “Jeopardy!” But he does know a lot about recovery and addiction.

“We believe Jesus is the way, the truth and the life,” said Weatherholtz, the pastor of addiction, recovery and discipleship at Breakout Ministries. “Jesus is our advantage on the battlefield of life. Without Jesus Christ, you can do nothing. When we establish biblical principles, we walk with purpose in life. The most effective longterm solutions are connections and a relationship with Jesus Christ.”

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational activities.

One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and

Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water.

“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to

Weatherholtz is also the founder of Jesus Advantage, a recovery program administered through Breakout Ministries. Jesus Advantage will be commemorating five years of recovery, truth and changing lives during an upcoming celebration. At 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, Jesus Advantage will host a fried chicken dinner at Breakout Ministries, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The dinner, which is free to attend, will include all the fixings and sides.

To register for the event, please reach out to Weatherholtz at 717-629-0429.

“Our general mission is to protect, conserve and enhance the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming up. There are paddling opportunities for whitewater kayaking, as well as gentle paddling on lakes and ponds.”

“In other regions, mountains and backwoods serve as the backdrops,” continued Desko. “We have plenty of fishing opportunities here, but they may be in places you don’t expect them to be. There are places you can catch monster flathead

The PFBC stocks 3.2 million raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.

“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”

MTSD Receives School Operations Impact Award

Manheim Township School District (MTSD) has announced that it has been named the recipient of the 2026 School Operations Impact Award by the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO). The award recognizes Pennsylvania school districts that demonstrate exceptional innovation in school operations.

MTSD was selected for its initiative Beyond Traditional Healthcare, which centers on the district’s on-site employee health clinic, Penn Medicine HealthWorks. The clinic, which opened in June 2025, provides staff with access to primary care and counseling services directly on campus.

Representatives from the district accepted the award at the PASBO Conference, including Kate Ward, director of human resources; Donna Robbins,

chief operating officer; Kristi Galbreath, PA-C; and Amber Murr, manager of HealthWorks Primary Care Practices with Penn Medicine HealthWorks.

In addition to providing health care services, the clinic space celebrates student creativity through a rotating gallery of student artwork, reinforcing the district’s mission and the connection between staff

well-being and student success.

As part of this recognition, MTSD was slated to receive a scholarship sponsored by PLGIT to support continued professional learning.

The PASBO School Operations Impact Award highlights innovative, people-centered solutions that serve as models for school districts across Pennsylvania.

Weatherholtz. “It will be a release from depression. We confront addiction, every addiction possible. The Lord can address that.”

The celebratory meal will provide time for fellowship, announcements and testimonials from individuals who have been impacted by the Jesus Advantage recovery program. More than 100 individuals are expected to attend, including recovering addicts, Breakout Ministries staff members and ministers from churches, all from across Lancaster County.

Jesus Advantage’s tag line is “Get free and stay free.”

“We want to be a resource in the community,” said Weatherholtz. “We want to be an in-road to healthy living. It doesn’t matter where (participants) are from; they’re God’s children. (Jesus Advantage is) a place to find rest and peace. You can get a hot meal and a shower and be around people who care.”

Staff members and participants in the Jesus Advantage program meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays at Breakout Ministries. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the meetings include prayer, discussion and a biblically focused message. Snacks and refreshments are served.

Typically, between 40 to

50 individuals struggling with addictions show up for the meetings.

“They’re the people Jesus would’ve been treating,” said Weatherholtz. “They’re the people Jesus would’ve ministered to. We’re doing what Jesus would’ve done.”

“Eighty percent of all incarcerated males came out of fatherless homes,” continued Weatherholtz. “We teach people to heal from trauma.”

After spending some time in jail, Weatherholtz has been leading a recovery lifestyle for nearly 20 years now. In 2020, Ron Buch, senior pastor at Breakout Ministries, suggested that Weatherholtz start a faithbased recovery program at Breakout.

Not only did he accept the appointment, Weatherholtz ran with it. Jesus Advantage has positively affected the lives of hundreds of people struggling with addictions.

“Jesus has been transforming the lives of people who are willing to listen for 2,000 years,” said Weatherholtz. “Jesus Advantage helps 100% of the people who stick with it. There are so many people out there who need help. We’d like to go and train other churches that are interested in holding their own Jesus Advantage meetings. We’d like to see

this expand.”

Jesus Advantage is one of a handful of programs sponsored by Breakout Ministries, which was founded in the mid 1980s. Also offered are a Lancaster County Prison ministry, a spiritual boot camp, ministry training, a Go Africa ministry and the Leola Discipleship House.

“Breakout is a very spirit-filled church. It’s defi -

nitely an outreach church,” said Weatherholtz. “Breakout Ministries’ mission is to awake people to what Jesus offers. God’s on the move at Breakout Ministries. God’s on the move in Lancaster County. He’s using ministries to set the captives free. I want to see families restored and lives restored.”

Trucks Will Roll to Grant Wishes

When hundreds of trucks hit the road on Saturday, May 9, they’ll be working to grant wishes. The 37th annual Make-AWish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will kick off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Truck parking, driver check-in and on-site registration will take place from 6 to 10 a.m. A silent auction and basket giveaways will be featured from 8 a.m. to noon. A Family Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a mandatory safety meeting for convoy drivers, before remarks and a Wish Angel Remembrance at noon. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 3 p.m.

There is a new route for the convoy this year, said Lori Dietrich, director of development for MakeA-Wish in Lancaster. The route will run west from Manheim on Route 283 to Tollhouse Road before looping back on Route 283 East and ending at the Esbenshade Road exit. The convoy will no longer travel through Mount Joy.

A map of the route may be found at https://tinyurl .com/3rczvcks.

Good spots to view the convoy will include the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction and LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road.

Dietrich said the convoy will include close to 400 trucks.

Drivers can still register online at www.wish convoy.org or in person on the day of the event.

People of all ages are invited to come out for the Family Fest. Activities will include games, vendors, DJ entertainment, food trucks, costumed characters, the famous convoy clowns, a silent auction, a basket raffle, hundreds of trucks to see, and the kickoff of the truck convoy.

“The Family Fest is open to the public,” Dietrich remarked, “with free parking, free admission and free activities for families.” While past events charged for game tickets, each child will receive free game tickets this year, she added. A variety of food trucks will be on-site for the Family Fest, including Castenedas Food Truck, Drifters, Mocha Motion Coffee, Piper Belles BBQ and Walk-O Taco.

The festivities have a carnival-like atmosphere, enhanced by the Make-AWish clowns.

“The clowns help to spread joy to attendees and serve a very important role as donation collectors at the event and

Program to Focus on Scams

A consumer financial protection event, $camJam, will be held on Friday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at Moravian Manor Communities, 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz. Sponsored by Rep. Mindy Fee and hosted by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, the program is intended to help members of the public, especially seniors, protect themselves from financial fraud, identity theft, and scams.

The program is free of charge. For additional information, contact LuAnn Fahndrich at 717664-4979 or lfahndrich@ pahousegop.com. along the route,” Dietrich said. “Over the years, the convoy clowns have helped to raise thousands of dollars to grant wishes.”

Proceeds from the day will support granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses through MakeA-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

“Currently, there are 73 kids waiting on their wish to be granted in our Susquehanna Valley region, 29 of which reside right here in Lancaster County,” Dietrich shared. “Make-A-Wish relies 100% on the generosity of the community to be able to grant the wishes of critically ill children. Participating has a direct impact on local families.”

With headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz., MakeA-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organiza -

tions. It serves children in all 50 states, as well as in more than 50 countries around the world. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 8,600 wishes.

Last year, the convoy raised $461,386 for Make-A-Wish. This year, organizers have set a goal of raising $525,000.

“The truck convoy is a legacy event for our chapter, which is honoring its 40th anniversary in 2026,” Dietrich said. “The truck convoy was the first fundraising event organized 37 years ago, and it is amazing that the event lives on today. It plays an extremely important role in the chapter’s ability to grant local wishes. We are able to keep this event going due to the generous spirit of the local community.”

LCBS Holds 150th Anniversary Banquet

The Lancaster County Beekeepers Society (LCBS) marked a historic milestone with the celebration of its 150th anniversary Members Banquet, held on the anniversary of its founding, March 13.

The event brought together members, leaders, and supporters to honor a century and a half of beekeeping education, stewardship, and community in Lancaster County. A highlight of the banquet was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jim Pinkerton, recognizing his years of dedication, leadership,

and lasting contributions to LCBS and the broader beekeeping community.

Pinkerton, a former LCBS president and longtime advocate for beekeeping education, was celebrated for his commitment to mentoring and advancing the craft.

The banquet featured a lineup of guest speakers who shared insights and reflections on the importance of beekeeping and agricultural stewardship, including Frank Ruthkosky, president of the Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association; Jim Pinkerton, former LCBS president and

honoree; Karen Roccasecca, state apiarist of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture; Chris Davis, acting deputy secretary for plant industry and executive director of the Commission for Agriculture Education Excellence, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

The anniversary year has also brought significant recognition from state and federal leaders. LCBS received official proclamations from Governor Josh Shapiro, recognizing the society’s 150th anniversary; Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell

C. Redding, celebrating the milestone; Congressman Lloyd Smucker, commemorating 150 years of service; and state Sen. James Andrew Malone of the 36th Senate District, congratulating LCBS on its participation in the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

For 150 years, the LCBS has remained committed to education, mentorship, and the promotion of responsible beekeeping practices. LCBS continues to build on its legacy - supporting pollinators, empowering beekeepers, and strengthening the agricultural community for generations to come.

We’re here to help people enter or re-enter the local work force. There are a variety of ways to do that.”

PA CareerLink Lancaster County offers self-service job searches, case management services, mock interviews, résumé assistance, training, workshops and youth and adult programming. PA CareerLink also hosts job fairs and works with local employers to sponsor job fairs.

“I used to have a boss who told me, ‘Hey, a job or having a career is an important part of people’s identities,’” said Roggenbaum. “When you meet people for the first time, it’s not too far into the conversation when you ask

them, ‘What do you do for a living?’”

PA CareerLink collaborates with numerous Lancaster County employers, who can post current openings on the organization’s website free of charge. PA CareerLink also works with human service agencies, manufacturing agencies, staffing agencies and the Lancaster County Assistance Office.

It has its finger on the pulse of the employment community.

More than 10,000 people pass through the doors of 1046 Manheim Pike every single year.

“A lot of these people have lost their jobs or need some sort of assistance,” said Roggenbaum. “We have individuals looking for training. We have veterans or spouses of veterans who have relocated to the area. We have people with disabilities. It’s a variety of people in different phases of their career journeys, from first jobs to starting over.”

The current unemployment rate in Lancaster County stands at 3.3%,

Bird Club Slates Meeting

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Aspen Simone and Hannah Michelle Brower, founders of Philly Pigeon Tours, will present “The Past, Present, and Future of Our Relationship With Pigeons.”

The speakers will cover 10,000 years of pigeon history, starting with the birds’ domestication. They will explore humans’ mutually beneficial relationship with and positive feelings toward pigeons, as well as the relationship’s turning sour in the 1960s. They will talk about how the future might look different and why they think empathy for pigeons is crucial at this time.

Simone has more than a decade of professional experience in civic technology, working for agencies and companies focused on regional planning, zoning,

well below Pennsylvania’s rate of 4.3%. Among the top Lancaster employers are Lancaster General Hospital, Mutual Assistance Group, the county of Lancaster and Giant Food Stores.

“One of the things we’re proud of in Lancaster is that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state, and that’s consistent,” said Roggenbaum. “We’re usually below the state rate. Lancaster County is bustling. We have a lot going on here.”

The causes of unemployment are as varied as the types of employment available here.

“Some people are unemployed,” said Roggenbaum. “Companies significantly lay off, or factors cause ripple effects. It could be the field. Individuals may go from one warehouse to another. Sometimes transportation or child care are factors. Some of it is just lost jobs. Things like that do happen.”

One of 66 locations in the state, PA CareerLink was established in Lancaster

County in 2001. More than 40 staff members work at PA CareerLink Lancaster County, but they are not technically employed by PA CareerLink, which receives both federal and state funding.

Those staff members operate an on-site food pantry, collect blankets for those in need and volunteer in the community.

“PA CareerLink Lancaster County is a group of proud partners working together,” said Roggenbaum. “PA CareerLink is an umbrella. I wear a PA CareerLink shirt, I represent PA CareerLink, but I don’t work for PA CareerLink. Our clients don’t care about that. They just care about the services we provide.”

and sustainability, as well as on federal benefits and environmental cleanup programs. Simone holds a bachelor’s degree in geography from Dartmouth College, spanning natural and urban geography, as well as a master’s degree in conflict resolution from UMass Boston.

A lifelong birder, Brower got her start in nature education during high school at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, and she holds a Master of Science in epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She also teaches about bugs with Insectopia and is working toward a professional certificate in restorative justice from Suffolk University. The program is free of charge. For more information, call 717-891-8145 or 717-725-2717. Information about the LCBC is available at www.lancaster birdclub.org, www.face book.com/lancasterbird club, and www.instagram .com/lancasterbirdclub.

“We get people who come in our doors regularly who didn’t know we existed or didn’t know that there was anyone who could help them,” concluded Roggenbaum. “We don’t want to be the best-kept secret. We’re here to help - help people get back to work.”

The contest encourages students to write 500 to 1,000 words about an individual with links to Columbia who participated in Underground Railroad activity, or about a site in Columbia linked to the Underground Railroad.
