Tenfold Plans First Virtual Event n May of 2020, Tabor Community Services and Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) began the process of merging. Over the summer, administrators and board members dealt with the legalities of funds transfers and by fall, approvals by local and state agencies had been granted. At the same time, board members were updating bylaws, and the organization was working through setting organizational procedures that would create a single entity working to offer housing advocacy and financial empowerment to area residents. Now, the organization is ready to announce its new name - Tenfold and introduce supporters and those who are less familiar with the work of the organization to the next chapter in the vision for providing affordable housing. On Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., Tenfold will hold a virtual celebration called “Unlocking Opportunity, Multiplying Our Impact.” The event will be hosted by

According to Mike McKenna, CEO of Tenfold, the event will include a video that tells what Tenfold brings to the community through the experience of a client who benefited from services from what were once Tabor and LHOP. “We will also be talking about the future of this combined organization and sharing what that vision looks like,” said McKenna, who added that a silent auction and two musical performances will round out the hourlong presentation. “There’s a lot of great content, and we are going to keep it moving,” said McKenna. As the merger was happening, COVID-19 restrictions and the resulting impact on clients presented challenges for the organization. “The clients we were serving were really hard hit by the loss of income … which put a lot of households at greater risk of eviction,” said McKenna, who noted that although homeless services were strained, adaptations were made to continue to provide support. The Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become self-sustainable.

Another individual who may attend is Josh Doughty, who fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a book along with his home-based services team member, Dave, who meets with him regularly. “They’re buddies,” said Link, who explained that Dave encouraged Josh in the writing process. Josh will bring copies of “Josh’s Journey … With Family, Friends & God” to the Fest.
A drive-through chicken barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of this year’s Fest. Both individual half-chickens and chicken meals will be sold. Meals will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a roll with butter, and a beverage. Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up. There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a new way. “It will be a fun day at Friendship Community. We are excited to see the smiles behind the masks,” she said.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylva-
nia Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. “We will have different things this year, along with things folks are used to as well,” said Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community. “We decided this year’s theme is ‘Same Run. Different Fun.’” The run Link spoke of is the annual 5K that has been part of the annual Friendship Fest and 5K since 2017. In 2020, the 5K alone was held in September, but this year, the 5K and the Fest will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Registration for the 5K is open at www.friendship community.net. Registration will also be available on site on the day of the event. Free T-shirts will be given to participants while supplies last. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a plant tent will offer a variety of spring flowers, perennials, and hanging baskets for sale. Both cash and a limited-contact card payment option will be available. Link reported that local greenhouses
have partnered with Friendship to donate items for sale. In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy collection. Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stig-

King St., Lancaster, all offices were closed, and employees were working remotely. “We didn’t see clients in person with a few exceptions,” said McKenna. “Most of our counseling and case management was happening through Zoom and phone and text.” Challenges were apparent in bringing the two teams together as well, but regular virtual meetings are addressing those growing pains. “It’s more challenging in a virtual environment, but it has forced us to be more intentional,” stated McKenna. The virtual event will have several goals, according to McKenna. “We want to reinforce to everyone
that the programs and services that they have known and cared about are continuing (to address) affordable and financial empowerment through the lens of partnership,” he said. “We value all the partners we work with in the community, and … we see all of that as contributing to the idea that there will be a future with greater equitable housing and financial security.” There is no cost to watch the livestreamed event, and Tenfold invites members of the community to hold watch parties with family members and friends. The program will be the first full-time academy for eligible candidates to earn a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMSapproved EMT - Basic Certification. This program is a collaborative effort between Lancaster EMS and PA CareerLink. Eligible candidates will be hired as a full-time Lancaster EMS employee and compensated at a training hourly wage while in attendance at the Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS’ EMT- Basic Certification course, which requires a minimum of 40 hours per week. The next phase of community engagement for Ewell Plaza began recently with a survey to gather input and inspiration for the façade artwork on the future parking garage and public library. This survey is the first step of additional community engagement opportunities taking place this spring and summer. When the Rev. Dr. Richard Bauer graduated with a Bachelor of Science in legal studies from Nova Southeastern University, he knew he didn’t want to be a lawyer. While attending school, he was also building a career in music; some of his songs were on MTV and he opened for musicians such as Joan Jett. After a year went by, he applied to a graduate program in religious studies at Florida International University. Soon enough, the faculty trained Bauer as an adjunct professor. Despite his graduate research, Bauer was not attending church. Then he became interested in meditating and, while meditating, realized that Jesus was the basis of his faith. “I couldn’t shake it,” he said.
While on a trip to the Holy Land, Bauer and his wife were watching the baptisms of pilgrims in the Jordan River. Bauer saw a man with a woman who had scars on her face, and the man filled a five-gallon jug with water from the river. “It was clear to me that this guy wanted to bring this big jug of healing water home with him on the plane, and that level of faith and hope that there’s a promise for healing struck me to my core,” noted Bauer. Suddenly, he knew what he was supposed to do with his life: ministry. A woman who worked at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and School in Fort Lauderdale watched Bauer’s band play every Saturday night. She knew Bauer’s education and teaching background, so she asked Bauer to talk to her church leader. “This guy and I started talking
Breslin Selected For International Competition Haley Breslin, a student at the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster, has been chosen to participate in the Kiev Grand Prix Festival, a ballet competition in Ukraine. This competition has a longstanding reputation of including some of the world’s most talented ballerinas. Breslin is a junior at the Commonwealth Charter Academy. She will join other students from the United States in the competition, but she is the only student from Pennsylvania who will participate. Haley has been working toward this goal since September of last year. She dances six days a week and fits in extra lessons between school and her regular dance schedule. This will be the second time that Viktor Yeliohin, the ballet master of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, will participate in the event, as he has been selected as one of the event’s many judges. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the competition will be an entirely virtual event. Breslin will participate in three categories: a classical variation, a contemporary piece, and improvisation, which is a new category this year. She has already submitted her videos to the committee,

St. Edward’s Welcomes New Rector
theology and travel and hit it off,” stated Bauer. “He immediately asked me to join his staff.” While at St. Mark’s, Bauer led the music program, taught middle school religion, and directed youth group. When Bauer was getting ready to graduate with a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2018, a headhunter was looking for the top pick of Bauer’s graduating class. This person turned out to be Bauer. “In church, we talk about being ‘called,’ and I was literally called on the phone,” he said. That was how Bauer became an associate rector at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster. After having lunch with a member of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, Bauer applied and was interviewed for a position as rector at the church. He was installed in that position in the beginning of 2020. Bauer said he believes he came to St. Edward’s at just the right time. As a musician, Bauer possesses audio and video knowledge. Without knowing just how important those skills would be, Bauer said St. Edward’s did well during the pandemic. “I got my Doctor of Ministry from Duke (Divinity School) in Christian leadership, so I was trained to adapt,” noted Bauer.
