Brian Roche is a battle-tested warrior in fight against fraud

Scam artists want to take what you’ve got. Brian Roche wants you to keep what you rightfully earned.

Roche is a full-time consumer investigator for local television station WGAL-8. Personable, knowledgeable and genuine, Roche has made a career out of helping viewers and listeners avoid the seemingly unrelenting onslaught of hoaxes and scams.

“What I want (the consumer) to learn is how to spot the scams,” said Roche. “Money is the root of it. What I’ve learned over my career is that two things motivate people: power and money. In this case, it’s money.”

“Gardens of Oz” offers free beauty for the asking

Aestheticallypleasing, beauty takes on a deeper meaning when shared with others. In the natural world, there are few things recognized as more beautiful than plants, including trees and flowers.

Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex 1-acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when visitors see it, smell it and experience it.

In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of charge. In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana DenenbergDurand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.

Denenberg said that the garden has already been reserved for four

events this season but that he’d like to see it used four times more.

Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.

“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”

Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.

The Gardens of Oz is home to more than 500 species of thriving vegetation, each with its own unique life cycle and color pattern.

“Every garden has a different vibe,” said Denenberg. “This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Gardeners

appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”

“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”

It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.

When he purchased the property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere.

It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the garden for about 15 years now.

“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”

For additional information about The Gardens of Oz, email Denenberg at drdenden@aol.com or call 717-682-0206.

On April 24, the Manheim Township resident brought his message of awareness to Lititz.

Roche addressed an audience of older local residents at the Lititz Senior Center, 201 E. Market St., Lititz, about how to identify and combat the current wave of fraud being perpetrated through phone calls, text messages and emails. The hourlong address included a

question-and-answer period, as well as slideshow presentation.

In addition to his consumer protection work on WGAL, Roche makes about five or six presentations to similar community groups across Lancaster County each month.

“Seniors have time; they’re home and near the phone,” said Roche, who’s been employed at WGAL for 22 years, 20 of which have been dedicated to his current role.

“Seniors are susceptible to it because they don’t understand the

To build hope

On April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the

founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.

It’s been about 16 months since Boyd and fellow Lebanon County residents Eric Fetter and Justin Bollinger purchased historic Elizabeth Farms for just under $4 million at a public auction. Located northeast of Brickerville at 262 Hopeland Road in Elizabeth Township, the 160-acre Elizabeth Farms was previously owned by the influential Coleman family for eight generations.

While the property certainly has very good commercial potential, profits weren’t necessarily the force driving its acquisition.

“It’s more than a financial move,” said Boyd. “I wouldn’t have spent $4 million if I was trying to make money. It’s for the family. It’s for the community to come out and enjoy. Land is always great to own. It’s really just about telling the story of American agriculture.”

Named for Elizabeth Huber, daughter of the property’s original owner, John

Jacob Huber, Elizabeth Farms and Elizabeth Furnace were purchased by the Coleman family in the early 1770s. Boyd and his partners bought Elizabeth Farms from Bill Coleman, who had owned the property since 1976.

“It was an opportunity,” said Boyd, who operates a poultry farm in South Lebanon Township and produces chickens for Bell & Evans. “That’s one of the things that led us to it. It’s an opportunity to tell the story of agriculture.

“The Colemans were some of the wealthiest families in Pennsylvania,” continued Boyd. “From that farm, all along Route 322 to Cornwall, all that land, the Colemans owned most of it. When it comes to the history of the farm, there’s a lot of value to me and my partners.”

A functioning tree farm and thriving agricultural homestead, Elizabeth Farms is home to Scottish Highland cattle, lambs, goats, donkeys, indoor and outdoor event venues, an agriculture junkyard playground, a pumpkin patch and even a corn maze in the fall. But under the new ownership, a greater emphasis has been placed on agritourism or “agritainment,” a combination of tourism and farm activities that provides components of entertainment

and education for visitors.

“It’s about the interaction of people,” said Boyd. “My wife and I, and our family, we love to host. Anything we can do to get kids off screens. Some people think food comes from grocery stores.”

Boyd said that Elizabeth Farms could explore the possibility of a farm-to-table restaurant in the future. But for now, Boyd and his colleagues are focused on the present, with a healthy respect to the past.

“I think that’s why it was so hard for them to sell,” said Boyd, of the past connections between the Colemans and Elizabeth Farms. “I have the same connection to my farm in South Lebanon. I want to pass it on to my boys.”

Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.

Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.

John J. Herman, chief executive officer with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever

changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility keeps state-of-the-art care here in Lancaster.”

County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.

Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”

Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The

The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.” Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.

take part in the tournament. Readers who wish to enter the cornhole competition may do so at https://tinyurl.com/hfh cornhole. Those wishing to take part in the Spikeball contest may call 717-9898161. Registrations are requested by Saturday, May 13.

Church sets spring yard sale

On Saturday, May 6, the 14th annual Vagabonds Car Show will return to the East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a rain date has been set for Sunday, May 7.

The car show will also include a variety of food trucks and vendors. Members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club will sell hot dogs, East Petersburg Borough will offer breakfast sandwiches, and ice cream will be available to purchase from Scoops Ice

Cream and Grille. Trophies and door prizes, consisting of gift cards and donations from vendors, will be awarded throughout the day. At 10 a.m., a cornhole tournament will be held; event attendees will be able to register for a set cost per person, and the winner of the tournament will be awarded a cash prize.

During the show, Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods will perform classic rock music from the ’50s and ’60s. “People always love coming to see the cars, listening to the music and getting a bite to eat,” said Vance Spicer, vice president of the Vagabonds.

Gabriel Chamber Ensemble to close concert series

Throughout the 2022-23 Arts & Culture season, The Trust Performing Arts Center has partnered with Lancaster International Piano Festival (LIPF) for a series of concerts. The third and final concert in the series is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, in the Great Hall of The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, and will feature the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, a nonprofit organization dedicated to present-

ing high-quality performances of chamber music repertoire.

The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble consists of Simon Maurer and Dana Allaband on violin, Agnès Maurer on viola, Ai-Lin Hsieh on cello and Xun Pan on piano. Now in its 34th season in Schuylkill County, the ensemble offers a wide selection of chamber music masterpieces and features invited professional guest artists.

See Ensemble pg 8

In addition to a spectacle of hundreds of cars, the event will incorporate a Chinese auction and a yard sale. A selection of items such as dishware, children’s toys and household goods will be available to purchase. The items that will be available have been donated by members of the Vagabonds and those in the local community, and the proceeds will benefit Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster. “We’ve been supporting Hospice & Community Care for over 20 years,” Spicer said. “We chose to support them because it’s a local organization and that money benefits Lancaster.”

The car show is part of a series of community events offered by the borough in partnership with Vagabonds. Although this is the 14th year that the club and borough have organized the event together, members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club have been hosting an annual car show for decades. The club was officially founded in 1958 and is based out of

Landisville, although its members hail from across the county. To obtain membership, one must have a vehicle that has been customized either through a unique paint job or body modification.

Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club members meet every other month to take group drives in their cars, with the group usually comprising several dozen vehicles. The group often selects a location ahead of time to drive to and stop for lunch, sometimes traveling as far as Maryland. The majority of Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club members drive customized hot rods that predate the ’80s, although there is no criteria for cars to be entered in the car show. “People come with original stock Fords, new Corvettes and Japanese cars,” Spicer added. “Anyone can come, and everyone is welcome.”

There is a set cost to enter a vehicle in the show. For more information, search for “Vagabonds Spring Kick-Off Car Show” on Facebook.

Oregon Community United Methodist Church, 1214 Creek Road, Lititz, will hold its annual spring yard sale on Saturday, May 6, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sale will include household items, books, and

more. Hot dogs, barbecue, baked goods, and drinks will also be on hand.

Table spaces for those wanting to join are available for a fee and may be reserved by calling 717-656-7198 and leaving a message.

technology. We grew up in a generation that was trusting. Our parents taught us to be nice, to give people the benefit of the doubt. Scammers take advantage of that trust.”

According to the spamblocker app RoboKiller, 78 billion spoofed - faked or hoaxed - phone calls were made in the United States in 2022 alone. But last year was also the first time that scam texts outnumbered the sham phone calls.

Those scam artists prey on emotions. Among common scams Roche listed “Must act now,” “Your relative left you money,” “Mystery shopper,” “You won the lottery,” “We have detected a problem with your computer” and scams related to rentals. Scammers may also pose as representatives of the Social Security Administration or the IRS. He said that the

Oh, the stories The Checkerboard House could tell

scammers’ preferred methods for extorting money are store gift cards and digital currency like bitcoin.

“Don’t take it personally, because that scammer has no idea who you are or, most of the time where you are,” said Roche. “It’s just like going fishing. They cast their nets into the ocean, and they’ve got a lot of bait.”

Roche, who hails from a family heavily involved in law enforcement, said he did not go looking to be “the scam guy or the fraud guy, but obviously the need is there.”

“I’m happy to do it,” said Roche. “I’m happy to take the message to the people, and I take it personally. I get very angry when I hear about some of these scams. I think information is my weapon; it’s what I dispense to people.”

It’s a grand old structure with a fascinating history and engaging back story.

Situated on Route 322 about a half mile east of Brickerville, The Checkerboard House is probably one of the most unusual buildings in Lancaster County. Constructed in 1754, the aesthetically appealing, Georgian-style house has outlasted 11 owners, although each has left behind specific elements that have helped shape the current building.

On land leased from William and Thomas Penn, Valentine Stoner built what would later become known as The Checkerboard House over a period of eight years in the 1750s. Over the next 270 years, The Checkerboard House served as a great many things to a great many people,

including a residence and a tavern.

At one point, the building was one of the few inns on Route 322, then a popular throughway between Philadelphia and Harrisburg.

First dubbed the Spotted House because of its unique masonry pattern of alternating dark and light stones on the exterior, the 3,800square-foot structure forever became The Checkerboard House in the 1800s. But as curious as The Checkerboard House appears from the outside, its interior is even more beautiful.

In 1997, The Checkerboard House was purchased by the Miller family and opened for public viewing and as a venue for selling gifts, crafts and flowers. The current owner, who chose not to be identified for this article, purchased the

property in 2014. Although he has not opened the house to the public, the current owner has painstakingly appointed each of the three-story Checkerboard House’s 12 rooms with antique furnishings and accessories in an attempt to keep it true to its place in local history.

“Its history is important to me,” said the current owner. “I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of finding furniture and antiques (for) each room.”

“It has such a historical significance,” the current owner noted. “Here is a very unique house that has stood the test of time, and it has not been modernized. When you walk in, it’s like you walk back in

Preschool to celebrate 50th anniversary

The Lancaster Brethren Preschool will conclude its 50th anniversary year with a celebration on Sunday, May 7, at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave. The church has invited current and former leaders, teachers, students and their families to participate.

The celebration will begin with a special Youth Sunday worship service at 10:15 a.m. in the Family Life Center. Middle school and high school youths will lead worship in a child-friendly service featuring children’s songs, a meditation by lead pastor Misty Wintsch and a time of celebrating 50 years of preschool ministry to the community.

Current preschool director Jessica Steinman and board chair Kathy Focht will honor founding director Lynne Shively, while also recognizing former teachers, board members and families. The service will be livestreamed on the church’s YouTube channel. The service will end with the congregation singing “This Little Light of Mine” as preschool children light the way with glow sticks to an open house of the preschool facilities. A free finger food lunch also will be served.

Memories will be shared through a slideshow of historical photos before the service and during the mealtime, and additional photos will be on display during the open house.

Founded in fall 1972, the preschool offers classes from September to mid-May for children ages 2 to 5, two or three days a week. The church donates facilities and provides board leadership. Steinman is in her 15th year as director of the program.

In addition, the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble has initiated community and educational outreach programs to develop chamber music audiences and the musicians of the future. To further its mission, the ensemble created the Gabriel Youth Orchestra to provide an opportunity for middle and high school students from throughout the region to play in a professionally managed and conducted setting.

The first LIPF concert in the series, held in October, featured award-winning virtuosic prodigy Qianxiang

“Daniel” Ma, a junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School who is instructed by Pan, and the second concert, in February, showcased cellist Hai-Ye

New Lancaster resident Melanie Verdi, also known as Big Mamma, will present “An Evening of Jazz and Blues,” along with the Velvet Martinis, on Saturday, May 13, at the Mulberry Art Center, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Verdi performs a catalog of rock, funk, jazz, pop and gospel favorites and has made her mark as a singer, guitarist, composer, lyricist, producer and entertainer.

Verdi has been sharing her gift of song since the age of 7 singing gospel music. A Baltimore native, she fell in love with Lancaster and all it offers when her husband, Tom DeGroot, whose family are life-long residents of Lancaster, showed her the town. She has immersed herself in the community by volunteering for

such organizations as the Lancaster Police Foundation, which has a mission to provide equipment to the Lancaster City Police Department.

Verdi now wants not only to perform but to inspire the arts in Lancaster. Verdi recruited and auditioned only local talent to back her on stage.

Available for the upcoming performance on Mother’s Day weekend are reserved tables and seats with a VIP lounge and table seatings for two, four and six persons. Attendees should bring their own beverages and food.

Seating is reserved and extremely limited. Advance tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com/e/big
