GiGi’s Playhouse celebrates Down syndrome everyday

World Down Syndrome Day doesn’t celebrate our differences. World Down Syndrome Day celebrates why we’re all special.

On March 21, at 2501 Oregon Pike, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster added its own special twists to World Down Syndrome Day.

“Down syndrome is not a condition,” said Kevin Hewitt, president of GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s seven-person advisory board. “People with Down syndrome aren’t suffering. They’re just different. They might have challenges that other people don’t have. Sometimes they’re

challenged physically. They might be challenged in their cognitive abilities.”

“In the past, people with Down syndrome tended to get pushed aside,” continued Hewitt. “General acceptance is what World Down Syndrome Day is all about. (People with Down syndrome) are often misunderstood, and sometimes they’re bullied. Our mission is to change the way the world views Down syndrome.”

That Friday in late March at the Lancaster location of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center, World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and was marked by discovery, fellowship and inclusion.

As part of the festivities, a group of GiGi’s Playhouse clients visited Lancaster County Christian School and a group of Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 students and Pennsylvania state Rep. Nikki Rivera visited GiGi’s Playhouse and toured the Manheim Township facilities.

“It was just a festive day, a day of awareness and celebration,” said Hewitt. “The playhouse was decorated with balloons and glitter. Music was playing. Different families were coming in. Grandparents were joining with families. It was loud, fun and exciting.”

In all, about 150 people visited GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster on World Down Syndrome Day. The only Down syndrome achievement

Rotary and Interact clubs install peace pole

Peace and service are two peas from the same empathy pod.

Philosophically, the concept of peace aligns with Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club’s (LSRC) vision of “Service Above Self.” LSRC has teamed with its little brother service club at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), Interact Club, to bring that philosophy to life in the form of a peace pole.

“I think peace is critical in these

Individual attention makes Aaron’s Acres summer camps something special

There is simply nothing like one-on-one connections, human touch and personal interaction. They can lift spirits and change lives.

Those types of interactions are what Aaron’s Acres is built upon, and collectively they are the driving force behind the local nonprofit’s original program, summer camp.

“We accept participants with all disabilities,” said Elaine Burnett, who’s been a program director

at Aaron’s Acres for 12 years. “Their needs vary, from hand over hand to behavior assistance to emotional and communicative assistance. With 1-on-1 or 1-on-2 staffing, we’re able to meet those needs. We’re able to meet those participants where they’re at. It helps us meet the child where their need is right now.”

“The traditional summer camp usually has a 1-to-6 or 1-to-8 counselor-to-participant ratio,” Burnett added. “But we’re able to assist and modify concerns right there and now.”

Aaron’s Acres

This year’s edition of Aaron’s Acres summer camps will be held over three two-week sessionsJune 16 to 27, July 7 to 18 and July 21 to Aug. 1 - at New Holland Community Pool and Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The camps are designed for residents of Lancaster, Lebanon, Berks, Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties, ages 5 through 21 with mental, behavioral or emotional disabilities.

Aaron’s Acres offers half-day summer camps from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or full-day summer camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the camp activities include games; arts and crafts; swimming; therapeutic music; therapeutic horseback riding; and interactive entertainment like magicians, petting zoos and ventriloquists.

“The goal is to create a traditional summer camp program,” said Burnett. “All participants should have opportunities to enjoy summer camp regardless of their abilities. Everybody should have the opportunity to participate in programs like these. At Aaron’s Acres, we want

to provide that for them.”

In 2024, Aaron’s Acres summer camps served 45 participants. But a shortage of seasonal staff counselors created a waiting list for participants.

“We can only accept as many participants as we have staff for,” said Burnett. “The more staff we have, the more participants we can have. Last year, we didn’t have enough staff members to accommodate all the participants every two weeks. We’d like to accept 60 participants every two weeks. We need to hire more staff.”

Staff counselors must be 18 or older, and they are not required to have any specialized training.

“We will do all the training,” said Burnett. “Our counselors are

generally made up of college students who are looking to go into special education or becoming social workers. This is an amazing hands-on opportunity for college students.”

Aaron’s Acres, which is located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, was founded in 1998 as a summer camp for 11 participants ages 5 through 9 with disabilities. Today, Aaron’s Acres serves 160 individuals ages 5 through 40 with year-round, recreation-based sports, social and community-service programs directed by trained, certified staff members.

“It started when a parent came to our executive director (Risa Paskoff) and said, ‘School is over. Now what?’” said Burnett. “So that parent and our executive director started this summer camp. Over the years, we’ve expanded the ages, and we expanded the programs. Then we started a weekend program. Last year, we expanded our programs to include adults.”

PHE’s repertoire includes original compositions, classical transcriptions, and other music in diverse genres, showcasing the performers’ mastery of advanced ringing techniques that go beyond traditional handbell sounds. The ensemble also explores collaborations with players of other instruments and expands the use of handbells in the performing arts. Through workshops, conferences, and community outreach, PHE promotes the art and education of handbell ringing.

The Church of the Apostles has also planned a presentation by member, photographer, and author Bill Hager on Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Hager will share two stories, “Evangeline: Guardian of the Muted Forest” and “Angel Island.”

Dance

company to present “Lovebug”

FRWRD Dance Company will return to the stage this spring with its latest version of “Lovebug,” complete with a swarm of fresh bugs, poetry and a cast of new faces and familiar favorites. Featuring a blend of dance and theater showcasing an array of costumes and props, “Lovebug” transports viewers into the world of insects.

FRWRD’s performers will spin, weave, creep, fly and hatch, bringing a cast of creatures to life from the web of the bella tarantella to the bustling See “Lovebug” pg 3

times,” said Dave Ament, an LSRC member who’s been a Rotarian for 48 years. “I think it has to start with individuals. If individuals think about the peace pole and the message, maybe they can work with their neighbor. Then it goes from there. But it has to start somewhere. As an individual, you can make a difference. It starts with you.”

In the afternoon hours of April 9, a peace pole sponsored by LSRC and the Interact Club was installed outside of an entrance at MTHS, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. Six feet in height, the peace pole is inscribed with the message “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in eight languages - English, Spanish, Dari, Swahili, Haitian Creole, Turkish, Burmese and French.

The message is meant to be apolitical and bipartisan.

“Peace means to have a good relationship with a fellow human being,” said Ament, who helped establish MTHS’ Interact Club in 1997. “(The peace pole) is a tangible reminder of something that should be basic, without being political.”

beehive to the fields of singing cicadas, which are new to the show this year. The show’s runtime is just over 60 minutes, and it is appropriate for children and adults alike. Ahead of the main performance at Mickey’s Black Box, FRWRD will host an outreach appearance, where families can mingle with the bugs, enjoy excerpts from the show and flutter their insect wings in interactive workshops led by the cast of the show. The sneak preview and family workshop will take place on Saturday, May 3, at noon at The North Museum, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Tickets are free with the price of admission. Visit www.northmuseum.org for details.

The show will be presented at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz, on Saturday, May 17. The performance will begin at 2 p.m., but attendees are invited to come early for pre-show fun, including live insect samples and AKA bug ambassadors from the Lancaster Conservancy. Doors will open at 1 p.m. For more information and to order tickets, visit www.frwrddance.com.

“In this time of increasing divisiveness,” said Ked Kantz, Interact Club’s school adviser, “this is a message we should all be able to support.”

The MTHS peace pole became a possibility through an initiative of Rotary District 7390, which is made up of rotary clubs in Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Dauphin, Adams, Cumberland and Perry counties. The local peace pole is the only one erected in Lancaster County and the only one standing in Rotary District 7390.

“We’re trying to promote positive peace,” said Ament. “Rotary as an organization has embraced it because Rotary is an international organization, and it melds with what Rotary is all about. It’s really just a message. It’s a nonpolitical message, but we live in a divisive country right now. When someone walks by it, maybe they will think about the words. It’s a simple message, but complicated to achieve.”

The concept of peace poles dates back to 1955, when the first one was placed in Japan to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the United

States’ dropping of atomic bombs that hastened the end of World War II. Since then, more than 250,000 peace poles have been erected throughout the world.

“When you think about when (peace poles were) first invented, it was a critical time in our history,” said Ament. “You can certainly relate it to things that are happening today.”

LSRC engages in any number of activities and fundraisers throughout the year that are designed to make a difference in the local community and in the world as a whole. But few are as symbolic or thought-provoking as the peace pole.

“(Peace poles) are a new idea in Lancaster,” said Ament. “Maybe it will catch on. Maybe it will get people involved in joining service organizations. Maybe it will get people to think differently. It’s not living within yourself; it’s thinking outside of yourself.”

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club meets every Thursday from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. The club counts 45 civically minded local

“We have new families coming in all the time, and they’re not sure how they’re going to fit in,” said Hewitt. “It’s encouraging for parents and grandparents to know there’s a place like GiGi’s Playhouse. Some parents just sit and talk about what they’re going through.”

Down syndrome is named for British physician John Langdon Down, who first described the condition in 1866.

“The general public really doesn’t understand people with Down syndrome,” said Hewitt. “What they’re seeing is someone who looks somewhat different. Our people with Down syndrome are out in the community. They work

One of 62 GiGi’s Playhouses across the country, the Lancaster location opened in 2020, serving 100 families affected by Down syndrome. Now, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster offers 18 programs to families.

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, which moved into its current more spacious building in April of 2024, is financed through four major fundraisers throughout the year and some individual donations. The organization is currently exploring the grant application process.

“That growth trend is continuing,” said Hewitt. “Lots of generous people and generous businesses believe in what we do. Every week another new family comes into the playhouse. They see all the programs, and we tell them, ‘We’re here for you.’ We’re always accepting donations, and we always want people to volunteer. We love to give tours of our playhouse. We also love to give presentations to businesses about what we do.”
