LBC’s Journey of Discovery Ends in Title Moment

It was a moment in time. It was a momentous moment, but a moment, nonetheless.

In many ways, everything had led up to this for the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) men’s basketball squad. Now, it’s a recent memory

upon which all future moments will be judged.

“It was a great moment,” said Jon Mack, who’s been LBC’s head coach for seven years. “It’s something you’ll remember, but the journey ranks up there just as high. That journey was filled with highs and lows and a lot of

character development in the process. It wasn’t the ultimate goal we set for ourselves. Hopefully, it’ll be something our guys will be able to draw from in their careers and with their families.”

In late March, the Chargers captured the Division One national championship of the National

Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.

Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”

Power Camps keep kids active over the summer. Power Camps allow kids to meet new people and make new friends. Power Camps help kids discover sports, improve athletic skills and foster a love for their games.

Power Camps also establish and encourage relationships with God.

“It’s about mind, body and soul,” said Diana Roth, an area representative of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and a co-director of the New Holland Power Camp. “There are so many

The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child, but it’s not required.

While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.

“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,”

National Champs from

Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in Branson, Mo. Third-seeded LBC defeated Columbia International 82-75 in the final game of the eightteam, single-elimination tournament.

Junior Camden Hurst, a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School, poured in 27 points for LBC in the national championship game, snagged five rebounds and dished out two assists. Teammates Reaves Hooks and Bennett Bowers each scored 15 points for the Chargers.

LBC opened a 37-27 halftime margin and held Columbia International to 37% shooting for the game.

In addition to the national championship, LBC ended its 2025-26 campaign with a 23-8 overall record.

The confidence just built throughout the game. We never allowed them to get the lead; we always had a response.”

There are about 100 small colleges from across the country affiliated with the NCCAA. The Chargers, who received an at-large bid into the NCCAA’s Division One national tournament, were the only team at the event whose program doesn’t offer scholarships.

In 2015, LBC won the NCCAA Division Two national championship.

“For this team, it was a wall we felt like we had to break through,” said Mack.

we are,” said Mack. “They are driven by the vision in our program. But they’re guided by our purpose, which exceeds more than wins. We want to display that when people see us playing. Anytime you play in a national tournament, your platform is expanded.”

The Chargers’ goal entering the season wasn’t necessarily to win a national championship, but neither was the possibility of it ruled out.

Beekeeper to Speak

St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, will host “Tales From the Beeyard” on Tuesday, May 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Lori Stahl will share her personal beekeeping journey while offering insights into the world of honeybees.

“We played well, we got off to a really good start and we complemented each other well,” said Mack. “Against Columbia International, we were outsized at every position. We really had to commit to pressure, and our pace of play gave them problems. We put bodies on their guys in the paint and made them work.

“We felt we did a lot of good things throughout the season. Breaking through and getting that national championship was a breakthrough for our kids. It was an accomplishment because we played three tough teams (at the tournament). Being able to win it with this group was a pretty cool moment.”

“We found ourselves in the national championship game, and we said, ‘Why not? Let’s win it,’” added Mack.

The 2025-26 version of the LBC men’s basketball program was made up of 18 players, five coaches and a team manager - 24 individuals with a shared purpose pooling their talents and pulling together toward a common goal.

“They’re guys who fit who

“I expected us to have success,” said Mack. “I expected us to be prepared for our conference play. Our success starts with the leadership of our captains. We really harped on our level of accountability. I think our captains did a good job of leading in the right ways. We had a group of guys who played hard and together. If you compete, you have a chance to win. I felt like we competed this year.”

LBC won six of its first nine games of the season. But it may have been a 6-2 run through its nonconference schedule that prepared the Chargers for their postseason glory.

“We learned how to win in the postseason,” said Mack. “I think at the end of the season we prepared better. I think mentally, our guys are better when we’re clicking. What we accomplished was a cool moment, but the process was what mattered most.”

Church to Hold Arts Events

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, has planned two performing arts events. A concert, “Organic Reflections: Celebrating American Composers,” will take place on Friday, May 1, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Larry Hershey and trumpeter Doug Albert. The program will include Aaron Copland’s “At the River,” Joseph Brackett’s rendition of the Shaker song “Simple Gifts,” and Carmen Dragon’s arrangement of “America, the Beautiful.” Admission is free.

“Soul & Spirit” will take place on Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. This 90-minute

sacred arts experience will celebrate Black history, faith, resilience, justice, and hope through gospel music, jazz, and the spoken word. Originally scheduled in February to celebrate Black History Month, the event was postponed due to winter storms. The program will be hosted by Dominique Denman and will feature Kellie Turner and Alanna Piper. Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be received to help maintain First Reformed Church’s historic sacred space. For more information about events at First Reformed Church, call the church office at 717-397-5149.

Stahl felt called to beekeeping in the late 1990s, never imagining the journey she was beginning. Now she maintains several apiaries throughout Lancaster County and southeastern York County, and through her company, BeeBee’s All Naturals, she rescues swarms and removes and rehomes honeybee colonies.

Stahl earned her Cornell University Master Beekeeper certification in 2019. She serves on the Pennsylvania Honeybee Advisory Board and has represented the Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association on the Pennsylvania State Council of Farm Organizations (PSCFO). She has also chaired the Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association’s legislative committee and served as treasurer of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. Through her work, Stahl is committed to educating both the public and fellow beekeepers on ways to support and protect honeybees.

This event is free of charge. It is part of the church’s Conversation Around the Corner speaker series, which aims to bring the community together through meaningful dialogue, shared learning, and diverse perspectives.

Fitzgerald was always captivated by Johnny Appleseed, drawn by family ties to the legend, his father’s larger-thanlife stories, and a shared restlessness to leave home and discover what lies beyond. “American Rambler” follows Fitzgerald’s year-long journey from Massachusetts to Indiana following Appleseed’s path. The book blends memoir, history, and travelogue.

VisionCorps Posts Call for Artists

VisionCorps is seeking a qualified artist or team of artists to paint a mural on its headquarters building located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. VisionCorps is located on North Queen Street between West Walnut and West Chestnut streets. The brick wall space for the mural measures approximately 1,000 square feet and is intended to wrap around the southeast corner of the building with frontage on both Queen Street and above the driveway

entrance.

This commission is open to all professional artists, or a team of artists. Applicants must be age 18 or older, and they preferably should reside in or near Lancaster County. Painting would ideally occur in some capacity on Friday, June 5, to coincide with VisionCorps’ signature fundraising rappel event, Eye Drop 2026.

The mural’s aims include highlighting VisionCorps’ services and celebrating those in the community who are blind or have vision impairments. The

design themes should include empowerment, independence, equity, and inclusion, and visual elements could include a white cane, a unique path, and the natural beauty of the landscapes of the five counties served by VisionCorps: Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York. Full specifications for the mural are available at https://tinyurl.com/ VisionCorpsMural.

To be considered, artists must submit a statement of interest, including contact information, their résumé, and three to five images of previous artwork relevant to the project scope. Requests for consideration must be submitted to Molly Kirchoff, City of Lancaster Office of Public Art, at mkirchoff@ cityoflancasterpa .gov by Sunday, May 3, at 11:59 p.m. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed. he shared. “And now, as we are in our 31st year, we are experiencing parents that come and tell us that they went through Youth Field Day and now they are there with their child.”

Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.

“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’” Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”

He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free, one-day interactive event for youths. Since then, the concept spread across the state. In October of 1995, a group of 70 people formed what is now the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth, and the first local Youth Field Day was held in June 1996. Last year, there were 22 Youth Field Days held over the summer throughout Pennsylvania.

Carruthers emphasized that the day would not be possible without the support of volunteers.

“These are people that love the outdoors and love to teach the kids how to love it too,” she said. “Many come from the sportsmen’s clubs in Lancaster County and have been volunteering since the Lancaster County Field Day was first held in 1996.”

Each year, the group also recruits new volunteers, including a participant now in his 20s who went through the program as a kid and now helps with

either fly fishing or freshwater fishing. Certified instructors with the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg run the canoeing station, and game wardens operate the PA Game Commission station.

“And they have stories of kids who went through Youth Day and then became game wardens,”

Carruthers remarked.

“Many of the volunteers have stories from the day, stories of seeing a young child come alive with excitement after they did something at the station.

The volunteer shares with others, and we all keep saying, ‘This is why we can keep coming every year and give it our all, just to see young ones show excitement for an outdoor sport.’”

She added that the Lancaster County Youth Field Day is always held on the first Saturday of June, but the host sportsmen’s club is not announced until March of each year. The event is hosted by one of the four clubs that have a large pond.

The Youth Field Day is funded by donations from

area sportsmen’s clubs, outdoor sporting goods stores and some local food companies.

“Also, a donation is given for free printing of pamphlets from a local printing company,” Carruthers said. “The companies and sportsmen’s clubs are not asking for recognition. They are doing it to help keep this goal alive, to let kids experience and love the outdoors.”

Along with a free lunch, kids will receive a goodie bag at the end of the day. Youth Field Day will be held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather. Early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, June 5. If people register early but then cannot attend, they should update their registration by removing their name to make room for other participants.

To register, visit www .register-ed.com/events/ view/241923. For more information, see the group’s Facebook page by searching for “Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth.”

life lessons in sports. Athletics can teach you so many lessons. It’s so good to get outside, move and have fun. Hopefully, we’re developing a love for being physical.”

This year’s edition of FCA’s annual Power Camps will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18, on the athletic fields and inside of Petra Christian Fellowship, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. A later installment of the Power Camps will be presented from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, July 13, to Thursday, July 16, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

There are costs involved with attending the camps, and lunch will be provided as part of the experience.

To register, go to https:// FCA.regfox.com/2026 newhollandpower.

“We want campers to come away knowing more about Jesus. That’s the main purpose,” said Roth. “We want to encourage them to grow in their relationship with Him, learn the sport and grow in their sport. Kind of like, ‘Hey, I tried a new sport, I want to continue in the sport or try a different sport.’ We want them to be more confident.”

The sports being offered at the Power Camps include soccer, basketball, baseball, field hockey, volleyball, flag football and track and field, as well as outdoor events like BB gun shooting,

VisionCorps is a nonprofit agency that began in Lancaster. Over time, its footprint expanded into southcentral and southeastern Pennsylvania as a resource for individuals with vision loss to learn to live independently. In addition to rehabilitation and preventative services, VisionCorps offers and encourages employment for individuals who are blind. archery, fishing, outdoor safety and hiking. The Power Camps are designed for youths between the ages of 8 and 12.

“We’re combining the love of Jesus and sports,” said Roth, a resident of New Holland. “There are a lot of positive vibes. It’s more than just about sports. Every day we have a theme day, and we have new sports this year. It’s a lot of fun. We have music playing, and we want campers to feel super welcomed. I’d love to have more and more kids come out and experience these opportunities. It’s not a competitive sports camp.”

More than 130 preteens are expected to attend the Power Camps. A vast majority of the campers reside in Lancaster County, including the Garden Spot, Cocalico, Ephrata, Warwick and Lampeter-Strasburg areas.

“Some are repeaters who want to keep coming back,” said Roth. “They’re kids who love sports. A majority come from Christian homes. Some are amazing athletes. They’re looking for a fun, safe, godly experience.”

The Power Camps are staffed by 15 to 18 experienced coaches, many of whom have coached on the scholastic and collegiate levels. The coaches are ably assisted by more than 40 huddle leaders, local high school students, some of whom competed at Power Camps when they were younger.

“Our coaches do an amazing job,” said Roth. “We don’t just pick any coach. We want coaches who understand the sport. They’re working with high school students and elementary kids. They’re not looking for perfection. They’re looking to build their confidence and foster their love for the sport.”

“I love to see the high school kids (huddle leaders) I worked with kind of do for others what I did for them,” she added. “Just helping (campers) grow in their relationships with God. What I hear the high school kids say is that they love to tell the campers about Jesus.”

FCA’s Power Camps were started in New Holland in 2018, with 50 campers.

Part of an international, nonprofit, interdenominational ministry, FCA was established in Lancaster County in 2016 and currently maintains an office at Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim. The local Power Camps are modeled after FCA’s Middle-Atlantic Competition Camps for students between the ages of 13 and 18, which this year are being contested from Monday, June 29, to Friday, July 3, at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

“Power Camps have been a wonderful way to introduce Fellowship of Christian Athletes to Lancaster,” Roth said.
