Day Of Celebration Gigi’s Playhouse Marks Down Syndrome Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
igi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center located at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, added some special activities to its already robust schedule to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21. Activities included a taco party with karaoke in the evening and purposeful programing with an emphasis on helping others during the day. A little before noon, Fantastic Friends, who are adult participants with Gigi’s, gathered around a table to dip pretzel sticks in molten chocolate to create brightly hued and tasty treats. The melted chocolate was colored bright blue and yellow, which are the Down syndrome colors. Christine Hewitt, site coordinator with the Lancaster Gigi’s, explained that the pretzels would be delivered to the Manheim Township Police station later in the day.

Volleyball practice, homework and a daunting one-hour commute have not been deterrents for Manheim Township High School ninth-grader Michael Gallagher, who is the only Lancaster County member of the Out of the Box Robotics team based in Coatesville, Chester County. Out of the Box Robotics is part of FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), a robotics competition for students in grades seven to 12. Each year, teams compete head-to-head by designing, building and programming a robot to

of the third month because individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of their 21st chromosome. Because the chromosomes resemble socks, wearing mismatched socks is a way to spread awareness and acceptance of Down Syndrome. “Everything we offer is designed to work in the ways that people with Down syndrome learn best,” explained Hewitt. “But everybody is welcome,” she added, noting that siblings of Gigi’s participants often come to the venue. “We have others with special needs participate in our programs (as well),” she said. Hewitt oversees programs at the Playhouse on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and works in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “This job is the best, and I am thankful to have it,” said Hewitt. Local Student Represents Lancaster County On Robotics Team complete a series of assigned tasks. At local events, teams compete to qualify for the state championship, and from that point, they compete to qualify for the world championship. Out of the Box Robotics is one of only two teams from Pennsylvania that advanced to the FTC World Championship. The event was scheduled to be held in Houston, Texas, from April 20 to 23. Michael learned about the team from his father’s colleague Josh Beauchamp, a former team member who returned to serve the team as a volunteer mentor. See Robotics pg 4

“A couple of us are about to leave and go hand out some gift cards and put money at vending machines as a few random acts of kindness,” said Hewitt, who was gathering adult participants to join her. According to Hewitt, Gigi’s offers nine different monthly programs, which add up to about 35 hours of programming a week. “This morning we had GiGiFIT Toddlers here,” said Hewitt, who added that 1:1 literacy tutoring is also offered throughout the week. About 200 area families take part in Gigi’s programming. The Playhouse opened in Lancaster in January of 2020, and it is one of more than 50 locations across the U.S. and Mexico. On World Down Syndrome Day, Gigi’s encouraged participants with Down syndrome and their families to wear mismatched socks to celebrate. World Down Syndrome Day is held on the 21st day

from helping others answer their Medicare questions. Volunteer Medicare counselors are needed for PA MEDI, a program run out of the Office of Aging at 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster. PA MEDI volunteers donate at least four hours weekly in private face-to-face sessions. Counselors answer questions about Medicare eligibility and enrollment, Parts A and B and Medigap benefits, Part D prescription drug plans, PACE and other financial assistance programs, Medicare Advantage Plans, and more. Skinner noted that volunteers will complete a training course of 10 online modules with testing. “Then there’s another online training (program) with the regional coordinator,” Skinner added. She noted that people who enjoy reading make good volunteers. “There’s a lot to know in Medicare,” she stated, adding that many retired people volunteer for PA MEDI. Computer literacy is a must, according to Skinner, who said that counselors come
from all walks of life and that former teachers, nurses, and lawyers are currently volunteering. “These are people who have worked and want to continue doing something that utilizes their brainpower,” she said. “Often people who have retired need to have purpose.” Skinner said she would like to see more men join the volunteer force. Current volunteers JoAnn Irwin and Janet Foster both noted that their former careers aid them in their work with PA MEDI. Irwin, who worked in IT, said that the training and teaching she did when she explained a complex computer system to people has prepared her. “Medicare has a lot of crazy rules, and it’s intimidating for people, but my job is to break it down and make it understandable,” she said, adding that she loves the challenge of the work. Foster, who worked for an orthopedic surgeon, said that knowing the provider’s side of Medicare helps her help others. She also enjoys the

Penn State Extension will offer a virtual program titled “Identification and Management of Invasive Knotweed” via Zoom on Thursday, May 5. The program will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The program is designed for landowners, property managers,

We never point them in a direction.” The free counseling service has
been available for more than 30 years. “(Sites) were established as State Health Insurance Assistance Program - SHIP,” said Skinner, who added that more than 50 SHIPs were offered across the state. Herb And Garden Faire Scheduled After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, the annual Herb and Garden Faire at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road, off Oregon Pike/Route 272, Lancaster, will return from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7. The event will take place rain or shine on the grounds of the museum.
In preparation for the event, the Landis Valley Heirloom Seed Project and its volunteers have planted and transplanted thousands of heirloom vegetable and perennial seeds and seedlings. These plants will be available for sale to gardeners during the Faire. Visitors will be able to purchase
from a wide assortment of vendors selling berry bushes, fruit trees, native shrubs and perennials, day lilies, heirloom vegetables, and more. In addition to plants and garden treasures, visitors may peruse among vendors selling jewelry, honey, beeswax products, wooden crafts, and textiles. For added convenience, a
plant-sitting stand overseen by museum staff and volunteers will allow shoppers to free up their arms while they move about the village and will also allow visitors to dine in the picnic grove among food vendors. Family members of the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) Class of 2022 will host Senior Sunday on Sunday, May 1, in place of the traditional post prom event. Senior Sunday will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at Manheim Township High School, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, and is designed for MTHS seniors and their dates. Team members have various duties, including building the robot and programming. Currently, Michael is on the build team. “A lot of teams have specific groups, and we have subgroups like making parts of the robot,” he noted. “You may start (in a different group) and migrate to where you are the most useful and have the most fun.” “Next year, I will be programming,” Michael added. “Our main programmer is graduating. I’ll probably fill in that position with a couple of other people.” For this year’s challenge, titled “Freight Frenzy,” the teams are exploring transportation, which includes shipping packages, disaster relief delivery and air transit. “(The
robot) has to pick up different blocks and balls of different weights and go over terrain, which is made of PVC piping,” Michael explained. The process begins when the robot is designed - first on paper. “The first stage is designing the robot and computer modeling,” Michael noted. “In the middle, we get to building, which is more difficult because everything is harder in the physical world.” Perfecting the robot often requires a lot of trial and error and practice runs. “Testing the robot and watching the robot fail and then fixing it is the hardest part,” Michael said. “You have to suppress being sad that it failed and (figure out) why it failed.” He added that team members
