Lancaster Country Day probes boundaries of conventional education
BY JEFF FALK
The importance of education can’t be overstated.
We all learn in our own time, in our own way, in our own space. That’s what makes options and alternatives necessary.
Cue Lancaster Country Day School. Situated at 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster, Lancaster Country Day is an independent, prekindergarten through 12th-grade, postsecondary preparatory school that’s an alternative to public education.
“
We’re here to nurture and grow the minds and spirits of the students in our care,” said Matt Micciche, who’s in his first year as Lancaster Country Day’s head of school. “ We want them to be able to go on to college and their careers. We want to make them people who are deeply engaged in their community. We think deeply about what your place in the world should be. But we also want our school to be a place of joy where people can come to feel safe and happy.”
Overseen by a board of trustees, Lancaster Country Day is more closely aligned to the concept of the one-time “boarding school” than it
is to a faith-based institution. Broken down into an upper school, a middle school and a lower school, Lancaster Country Day offers all the fundamentals and extracurricular activities of a traditional education in an intimate setting.
“The role of education is
something we should be asking ourselves about all the time,” said Micciche. “We exist to perpetuate good in the world. It’s also about creating individuals who see their role in the world as helping others and being a benefit to their communities. It’s preparing students for the work world they’ll live in.”
Currently, 623 students in preschool through 12th grade are enrolled at Lancaster Country Day, 200 to 225 of whom make up the upper school - grades nine through 12 - population. Lancaster Country Day’s students are predominantly residents of Lancaster County, but they also hail from Dauphin, Berks, York and Lebanon counties.
Lancaster Country Day employs about 100 staff members, 60 to 70 of whom are teachers.
“W hen you have 12, 13, 14 kids in your classroom, you’re able to challenge each student on an individual level,” said Micciche. “Our kids talk about their relationships with their teachers. Just about every teacher knows every student by face and name. One of the things
New production studios will help MTHS sound better
BY JEFF FALK
Recently, Manheim Township High School (MTHS) added a pair of media production studios to the library with the goal of further enhancing the education experience. The new media production studios will provide students greater opportunities to produce podcasts, generate clearer and crisper sound and overall be more creative.
I really value here is the depth and the breadth of the personal relationships. It allows students to feel safe and a connection to each other.”
The origin of Lancaster Country Day School can be traced to 1908 and the all-girls’ Shippen School. The school changed its charter and name in the early 1940s after including male students from the nearby Franklin and Marshall Academy for Boys, which shuttered its doors.
In 1949, Lancaster Country Day moved to its current location on 29 acres of suburban Manheim Township soil.
“I don’t think we’re as wellknown as I’d like us to be,” said Micciche. “I think our children are incredibly well-served here. As the world has become a more diverse and challenging place, I think our approach has changed. Any good school is evolving to reflect the world it lives in.”
For additional information about Lancaster Country Day, go to www.lancastercountryday.org.
“No other building in our district has this equipment, so it’s something new and exciting to use,” said Karen Leisey, who’s been MTHS’ librarian for six years. “We wanted it in the library because it’s a central location and available to everyone. I think there’s an entire layer of jobs related to content creation that these kids are going to have access to. Giving them experience is going to potentially help them plan for their futures.”
Included in the media production studios are podcasting equipment, a sound board, microphones and headphones, mounted sound panels on the wall, a computer for editing and a television monitor. With planning, construction and finishing touches like permits and electrical work, the new media production studios took about a year to complete before becoming functional in the early days of March.
“I’m excited about the library becoming a hub of the school,” said Leisey. “Our administration is excited about the changes we’ve made. We want to stay current and become more modern. It draws kids and that’s what we want to do. Our students know that when they come to our library, they can get tech help.”

The Lancaster Bible College Dance Company will present a spring dance performance in Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, May 2. The showcase will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature student performances choreographed by professional guest choreographer Cody Smith and Lancaster Bible College (LBC) dance instructor Danika Steinmetz, as well as an adaptation of one of Bob Fosse’s original works. The event will run under an hour and will also feature dance performances by LBC faculty members and friends.
Not only are the dance company’s rehearsals and the upcoming performance aimed to prepare LBC students for future careers in performing, choreography, directing and teaching, but these experiences in the arts also bring students together in community. The group is open to students majoring in performance and those in other majors.
Tickets can be reserved at www.lbc.edu/events and are paywhat-you-will. Proceeds will help fund future LBC Dance Company performances.

Production studios frompg 1
A large portion of the funding for the media production studio was covered by a $50,000 grant from the Manheim Township Education Foundation.
“I think my favorite thing about the whole thing is the excitement by the students,” said Leisey. “They think it’s the neatest thing. It’s very easy to use and I can teach them in minutes. It’s been so neat to see them exposed to something they can use to create.”
The origins of MTHS’ media production studios can be traced to a time when Leisey first began prioritizing and condensing books in
order to fill shelves. Ultimately, the gained space became home to the media production studios.
“It’s open for everyone to use,” said Leisey. “Does that mean every student will use it? Absolutely not. At this point, the kids know it’s available. Some kids might just ask to use it on their own. It might be for a class project. Some classes sign up for it.”
“It can be used for creating podcasts or to produce sound effects or to record voiceovers or to edit audio sound,” she added. “We’re providing them a quieter place to record.”

“Lunch with Luke” provides nourishment for body and soul
BY JEFF FALK
The feeling one gets from helping others is hard to describe. It’s like having your belly filled with warm food, under a welcoming roof engulfed in fellowship.
Although the weekly meals at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) are not evangelistic, the church serves food that’s good for the soul. The church’s members call the meal “Lunch with Luke,” and everyone involved gets more out of it than they put into it.
St. Luke’s UCC, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, serves a free lunch every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in its social hall and has been doing so for the better part of the last 14 years. Over that time, members of St. Luke’s have served an estimated 300,000 meals, with a spoon in their hands, a smile on their faces and love in their hearts.
“I feel great when someone says, ‘This was so good,’” said Linda Bushong, the director of Lunch with Luke. “I enjoy this. It’s a mission of the church. I think this program has been blessed. Every time it seems we have a need, it gets filled.”
Each meal served at Lunch with Luke is nutritionally balanced, featuring an entree, a vegetable, salad, fruit, bread, dessert, coffee and water. The meal program is operated by around 16 volunteers, who cook, serve and clean up.
The meal typically serves 60 to70 residents of Lititz and surrounding areas, no questions asked.
“They’re people from the community,” said Bushong. “We do have people who come here who are obviously in need of a meal, but I think a lot of them are looking for fellowship, and we provide a place where they can feel safe. Every
week, we can interact with them, and it’s blessings on each end. It’s worked out really well.”
Lunch with Luke is funded through grants and donations. Bushong characterized the program as “pretty selfsufficient” and said that it is not figured in as part of St. Luke’s overall operating budget.
“It’s free and it’s welcoming,” said Bushong. “And if someone comes to us with some sort of need, we can help them fill it. Sometimes they’ll want to talk to the pastor.”
St. Luke’s Wednesday meal program operates independently and is not officially associated with the Lancaster Community Meal Program, a loose collection of organizations and churches that provides three free meals every day at various sites across the county.
“It started from the thought of one individual, ‘We could start a free meal program,’” said Bushong. “It just went from there and didn’t stop. We brought forth a mission and it just happened. There wasn’t a lot of planning.”
The church began its Lunch with Luke program in 2009 and served four people at its first meal. The program was not held for two years during the pandemic.

Organization plans bingo event, seeks assistance
Big Hug Inc. will host its inaugural Pocketbook Bingo fundraiser at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The event will include 10 games of bingo, two special games and giveaway drawings. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Space is limited to 200 bingo players. Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door. To purchase tickets and for more details, visit www.bighuginc.org or search for “Big Hug Inc.” Information is also available by calling 717-299-5599. The proceeds from this event will go to feeding people throughout central Pennsylvania over the coming months.
Big Hug Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to feed those who are homeless and hungry throughout Lancaster, York, Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The organization was started in late 2021 by Linda Than.
When Than was a little girl in Vietnam, she and her family would gather around the dinner table to share meals and stories of their day. Than came to the United States just over three decades ago, initially living in Washington, D.C., for a few months before moving with her family to Lancaster. During her time in the nation’s capital, Than saw many people who were homeless, and she felt a need to help. Big Hug Inc. is based on Than’s joy for cooking and caring for others, interests that came from her late mother.
Since Big Hug’s founding, Than has organized a five-person board of directors, which includes the Rev. Louis Butcher, former pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church. The board meets monthly and supports Than in her efforts to feed those in need.
Big Hug is seeking assistance from local churches and community organizations that have commercial kitchens and gathering space where Big Hug volunteers may prepare and serve meals on weekend days. Currently, two or three facilities per county are needed for this purpose.
Thus far, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia has invited Big Hug to provide its services one Sunday in June and another in August. Volunteers and financial contributions are sought, as well.
Big Hug has set a goal to feed more than 2,500 people before the end of 2024. Than also hopes to one day have a food truck that will allow her to take her mission into the streets, directly to people in need.
