Manheim Township

You’ve undoubtedly heard of fishing for trout, fishing for compliments, even fishing for men. Well, this is a kind of fishing with a different result.

The Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament is all about helping and supporting veterans.

Local teenager

Case Baccio is the fundraising event’s founder, organizer and promoter.

“The mission is to support veterans and their families and recognize the sacrifices they made for us,” said Case, an enterprising seventh-grader who attends Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “They protect our country and keep us safe. It’s a show of gratitude to our nation’s heroes. A little bit can go a long way. You don’t

have to do something big. It’s just a way of saying, ‘Thank you for your service.’”

This year’s edition of the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, the fifth, will be staged at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration will open at 7 a.m., and lunch will be served after the competition.

“The mission is to support veterans and their families and recognize the sacrifices they made for us.”

“We just want to give back in some small way,” said Ali Bucher, Case’s mom. “This is our way of doing it. There are so many veterans’ organizations out there. We want to reach as many individuals as we can.”

The fishing competition will award prizes to the top three adult finishers (16 and older) and the top three youth finishers (15 and younger) according

to the aggregate weight of their catches. About 50 total anglers are expected to participate.

“I’ve always been really interested in outdoor stuff,” said Case. “I love to fish, and most people I hang around with love to fish. So I figured I’d start a fishing tournament.”

All proceeds from the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament will go to Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals, as well as other local veterans’ organizations. If the event raises as much money as Case hopes - $10,000 - it would push the total amount raised by Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis.

One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will

Acting is the art of taking on a role or portraying a character other than oneself. It can be an especially challenging task for young people just beginning to understand themselves.

The fine and performing arts department at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) will present the art of acting and what it means to the youthful performers exploring it during its upcoming staging of the musical “The Addams Family.”

“Acting is almost like an out-of-body experience,” said Michael Adams, the director of “The Addams Family.” “You’re not that character, but you’re being that character. You have to talk like them. You have to move like them. Then it becomes about connecting each individual character and bringing 35 students all together. When you do that, it becomes a show.”

Organizer Case Baccio (crouching) and participants at last year’s Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament competed for a great cause. Members

Lancaster Catholic will perform “The Addams Family” on

over the years to nearly $50,000.

“The more participants we have, the more fun the event is,” said Case. “Some of the fishermen have heard of our organization and want to support the mission. Some people we know and some people we don’t know.”

“He does everything,” said Ali

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher. On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year.

levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving record

of her son. “He’s the face of the organization. It’s his thing. He goes to all the businesses asking for money.”

Case established the event in 2020, when he was in elementary school, after attending a Warrior Weekend, an event designed to provide support for veterans.

“I do it because when I went to Warrior Weekend it made me realize how many people need assistance,” said Case, who’s a Boy Scout and also a member of MTMS’ football, wrestling and track and

field squads. “When I got back, I knew I had to do something to help veterans. That’s how we came up with the event.”

“He’s just a really caring person,” said Ali. “He’s an incredible kid. He’s compassionate. He’s driven. He’s an excellent student. He’s an excellent classmate. He just wants to give back and help.”

For additional information on Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, search for “Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament” on Facebook.

The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from

individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https://epcgolfouting .com/register. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https:// goodsamservices.org.

Thursday, April 25; Friday, April 26; and Saturday, April 27, all at 7 p.m. at Old Main Auditorium on the campus of LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the nights of show.

“I don’t want to think about how many hours we’ve put into this,” said Adams. “You’ve really got to pace yourself. If you go full tilt from the beginning to the end, you’re not going to make it. It’s all about stamina. It’s knowing when to take breaks and take time off. I think it helps us in the long run.”

There are 54 LCHS students involved in the production of “The Addams Family” - 35 cast members, nine members of the orchestra and 10 students in the stage and lighting crew. Included in the cast are senior Isaac Lin as Gomez Addams, senior Hadley Davies as Morticia Addams, senior Julianne Leonard as Wednesday Addams, freshman Piper Davidson as Pugsley Addams, senior Murphy

McCormick as Grandma Addams, junior Tre Hockley as Uncle Fester, senior Frank Essis as Lurch, senior Sydney Dissinger as Alice Beineke, senior Collin Stritch as Mal Beineke and junior Drew

Olsen as Lucas Beineke.

“I especially enjoy the process of growing into my character, not only by memorizing my lines and lyrics and delivering them well, but also by accentuating my character’s distinct personality,” said Isaac. “I play Gomez Addams, a proud father, devoted husband and comical family man who treasures his ancestry and only wants to do what is best for his family. He does his best to guide his family on the right path, but he is often held back by indecisiveness, weakness of character and hesitancy. Eventually, he overcomes these obstacles to bring his family back together. I have absolutely enjoyed playing the part of Gomez these last few months.”

The cast and crew of “The Addams Family” began their work on the production in the early days of December. After the holidays, they hit the ground running before ramping up their rehearsal intensity during March and April.

“That week of the shows is really surreal,” said Adams. “(The students) have been doing this for five months. Now they’re getting a chance to tell the story to people who have never heard it before. It’s like, ‘Wow, it’s really happening.’”

The Birth & Beyond Expo will be held on Saturday, April 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bright Side Opportunities Center, 515 Hershey Ave., Lancaster.

This event was designed to provide opportunities for families to meet birth and postpartum professionals and become more aware of local resources. It is geared for those hoping to become pregnant, expectant parents, and families that recently welcomed a new baby, as well as grandparents and friends who are looking for gift ideas.

The expo will feature more than 40 vendors, including pediatricians, lactation consultants, and doulas as well as therapists, photographers, and artists. One vendor will share information about an app designed to help dads better support their partners during labor.

Many vendors will

offer discounted services or tickets for giveaway drawings for gift baskets. Giveaway drawing winners will be announced starting at 3:30 p.m.

Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged at www.birthandbeyondco. com. More information is available by visiting the aforementioned website, searching for @birthand beyondco on Instagram, or contacting Danielle at 484-798-4510 or birthand beyondco@gmail.com.
