today because these (veterans) help keep us safe.”
hen he was 8 years old, Case Baccio had an inspired idea. Then, he brought that idea to life, committed to it and followed through with it.
Now, six years later, Clear Water for Heroes is still going strong.
“I guess my motivation would be something between gratitude and joy,” said Case, an eighthgrade student at Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “My goal isn’t to raise a large amount of money. My goal is for everyone to have a blast, for everyone to have a great time. I think part of it is the impact that the first veterans’ event I went to had on me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget it. It’s the reason I started this thing. There are people doing things
“This is such a small thing, but it’s made an impact on a lot of people.”
With the assistance of family and friends, Case is staging this year’s Clear Water for Heroes fishing tournament on Saturday, May 3, at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township. The fundraising event for veterans and veterans’ organizations will be conducted between 8 a.m. and noon, followed by a complimentary lunch.
Participants and supporters can preregister by emailing clear waterforheroes@gmail.com or by searching for “6th Annual Clear Water for Heroes” at Eventbrite. com. Same-day registration for the event will begin at 7 a.m.
“I believe anybody can be a hero,” said Case. “The way I look at it, if you do something kind,
I would classify you as a hero. It means giving something to benefit others.”
“We just want to say thank you,” said Ali Bucher, Case’s mom. “We’ve been around this veteran community, and we want to give back to people who have done so much for this nation. This is such a small thing, but it’s made an impact on a lot of people.”
The Clear Water for Heroes fishing tournament will offer
prizes to the top three adult finishers and top three kid finishers determined by the aggregate weight of the three biggest fish caught.
“My favorite part is seeing adults stepping in and helping kids fish,” said Case. “We had one veteran who was helping a group of four or five kids who never fished before. He was there the entire time helping kids, and when they caught one, their faces
just lit up.”
“I also love the connections we’ve made,” he added. “We’ve become friends with a whole bunch of people.”
“It’s a family event,” said Bucher. “My favorite part is the people and seeing the smiles on faces. There are people who have followed Case from year one and have come to every event.”

There are different topics, different subjects. It’s a different kind of learning. It’s a different kind of teaching.
At the Brownstown campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), students are encouraged to explore fields they are interested in. That type of empowerment broadens horizons.
“I can walk through our school, and I can go from one world to another,” said Justin Bruhn, principal at LCCTC-Brownstown. “It’s really amazing what’s under our roof. I like to walk into programs and say, ‘What are you doing today?’ It’s just a great environment. There’s enthusiasm. There’s ambition. There are a lot of students finding their ways. Some are finding how they learn best.”

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”
The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.
The event will feature free entry and free parking.
Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.
“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”
Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its

Something for everyone.
The cliché holds true for the garage sale held by the Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ (UCC).
The annual event will be held Friday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.
Sale items were donated by members of the congregation, Church of the Apostle’s preschool families, Homestead Village Retirement Communities, and people from the neighborhood.
The cash only sale will feature men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and shoes; purses; games; books; puzzles; tools; garden tools; electrical appliances; seasonal items; dishes; pots and pans; small
furniture; and vases.
“As a church, we welcome all people,” church administrator Melissa Kosman said. “We would love to have the community come out to basically support themselves, support the community and those in need. It’s a great opportunity to do some shopping and grab lunch. And it’s inside, so you don’t have to worry about rain.”
Garage sale coordinator Clara Kosmela added, “Very nice things at very reasonable prices.”
There will be hot dogs, baked goods, and soda for sale.
After the garage sale is over, a committee will determine which organizations benefit from the proceeds. Part of the money raised will go to the United Church of Christ disaster relief fund and to the Apostles Assistance Fund, which donates
money to nonprofit groups for them to distribute.
Previous garage sales have benefited the Salvation Army; Meals on Wheels; women’s organizations; and Tenfold, an organization that operates a 52-room shelter that provides temporary housing and supportive services for individuals, couples, families, and veterans.
Items left over following the sale will be donated to local organizations. Clothing and household goods will go across Marietta Avenue to Grace Baptist Church, which will give away the items to people in need.
Books will be donated to the Library System of Lancaster County.
Kosmela said putting on the garage sale is a collaborative effort that builds camaraderie. Volunteers gather on the four days prior to the event to get things ready. Congre -
closes one week before orientation. Please call for more information and to reserve your seat: 717-367-1121, ext. 33024, or visit MasonicVillageHospice.org/volunteer/registration.
Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) will hold its 11th annual gala on Saturday, April 26, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. Check-in
will begin at 6 p.m.
The gala will bring together alumni, faculty members, and community members to celebrate the school’s legacy and support its
mission. The event will feature a formal dinner, a live auction, and the presentation of two Saint John Paul II Excellence in Leadership Awards.
The honorees are the Rev. Monsignor Peter I. Hahn and the Rev. Daniel F.X. Powell. This award, the highest honor bestowed by LCHS, recognizes individuals who embody the faith and mission of the school through their leadership and service.
Hahn has dedicated his life to faith, education, and service. A 1974 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he continued his academic journey at the University of Pittsburgh, earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics, followed by a Juris Doctor from the same university’s Law School. After practicing law, he felt called to the priesthood and entered Pope Saint John XXIII National Seminary, ultimately being ordained in 2002. Hahn has served in various pastoral and leadership roles, including as pastor of Saint Peter’s Church in Columbia and now as pastor of Saint Leo the Great Parish, where he has spearheaded significant school and parish expansion efforts. His dedication to LCHS spans decades, during which he
gants also get the opportunity to spend time with people they may wave to before a service.
“It’s a great time for church members to interact with each other and have a fun time,” said Kosmela. “It’s always very positive.”
On Monday, April 21, through Thursday, April 24, volunteers will meet at the church from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to sort and price items. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 21, as well as on Tuesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 23.
Volunteers are needed to fill 60 slots for cashiers and 10 slots in the kitchen.
Kosman said there are opportunities for high school students who need to earn service hours. Kosman can be reached at 717-392-5718 and admin@apostlesucc.org.
served on the board of directors, led capital campaigns, and mentored future generations.
Powell has been an instrumental figure in supporting Catholic education and the spiritual development of LCHS students. As the current pastor of St. John Neumann Parish, a supporting parish of the school, Powell plays an important role in fostering the school’s mission. Drawing on his background in finance, he serves as a member of the LCHS board of directors, vice chair of the board, and a participant on the finance committee. His passion for guiding young people in their faith is evident through his dedication to hearing confessions, celebrating Mass, and being a constant presence at school events, from athletics to the arts.
The gala will also include an online auction. Bids will be accepted from Wednesday to Friday, April 23 to 25. Individuals and businesses have donated items to the auction, which will be accessible at www .lchsyes.org/gala/.

servicemen from veterans’ groups and VFWs from across Lancaster County are expected to participate. Case is hoping to raise more than $10,000 through Clear Water for Heroes, and the proceeds will go to benefit local and national veterans’ organizations.
Case has acquired event sponsorships from 15 local and national businesses.
“I try to put as much time and effort into this event as I do with sports,” said Case, who competes in football, wrestling and track and field at MTMS. “We’ve seen it change people’s lives for the better. I’d say (the participants are) family. They’re making that commitment to get up early and help people who have made sacrifices that no one can imagine.”
It was a trip to Ohio for a Warrior Weekend to Remember that provided Case’s initial inspiration
for Clear Water for Heroes. Over the first five years, Case’s event has raised more than $50,000 for veterans, their families and veterans’ causes.
“The amount of support we get is through the roof,” said Case. “We’ve crushed our financial goals the last few years. When I first started, I was shy to go up to people, but the connections we’ve made have gone through the roof. Now I go up to people and say, ‘Thank you for your service,’ and we’ve seen veterans cry.”
“He is just a kind soul who wants to give back to people,” said Bucher of her son. “He is just an incredible human being. ... He does this because he cares. He’s motivated. It’s all him. He does it all. We need more human beings like him.”

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.
“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastrieswill also roam the event and will be available for pictures.
Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.
“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit
According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.
“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”
And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry.
Michael from Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland presents a program at last year’s PA Family Travel Fair.
Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.
Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.
Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.
“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”
“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Located at 231 Snyder Road, Ephrata, Brownstown is one of three LCCTC campuses supported by 16 Lancaster County public school districts. The Brownstown building houses 20 classrooms and adjoining laboratory workspaces, one for each of the LCCTC programs offered there.
“In order to have a forward-moving world, it’s important to have educated citizens,” said Bruhn. “That’s what education does for students. It teaches them how to be learners. No matter what the profession, that’s going to be something that stays with them for the rest of their lives. If you’re going to last, you’re going to keep learning. The public education system tries to reinforce that idea. Having curiosity and ambition is something we can encourage in our students. Every student has a different journey.”
The Brownstown campus offers 12 LCCTC full-day programs designed mostly for seniors: cabinetmaking and wood technology, architectural CAD/design, electrical construction technology, heavy equipment operations and basic maintenance (HVAC/R), painting and interior finishes, plumbing, computer network and security, power sport technology, commercial art, digital design/ print media, interactive media and web design, and photography and multimedia communications. The school also offers six half-day pro -
grams designed mainly for juniors: introduction to construction, introduction to culinary arts, introduction to health careers, introduction to manufacturing, introduction to transportation, and introduction to viscom.
“We are very outcome- and goal-oriented,” said Bruhn. “We take pride in teaching our students very specific skills. They leave us knowing how to do things. The students are able to develop very realworld skills. I think that appeals to a lot of students. It’s different than what they get at traditional high schools. They’re skills that their peers couldn’t normally do.”
There are currently 475 students enrolled at LCCTC-Brownstown. They reside in all the communities of Lancaster County, and they hail from almost every local public school district, as well as some private schools.
“They’re like any other student out there,” Bruhn said. “We get the same variety as everyone. They all have different backgrounds and different abilities. They’ve latched on to and identified a career pathway, and they’re getting more intense training.”
“There’s a perception that all of our students are going to seek employment right after high school,” added Bruhn. “The reality is that they’re headed in a ton of different directions. It varies from program to program. Some
students have jobs lined up. Some pursue postsecondary educations. Some of it depends on the students and what their ambitions are.”
The Brownstown campus of LCCTC employs about 60 individuals, 20 of whom work as program instructors.
“Our staff is incredible,” said Bruhn. “Our staff came directly from their industries. They were experts before they came to us as teachers.”
LCCTC was originally established in 1966 as Lancaster County Area Vocational-Technical School before
Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 36 Church St., Rothsville, will host the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble in concert on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. as part of its 202425 Music at Jerusalem Concert Series.
Established in 2003, the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble consists of auditioned, advanced-level handbell ringers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Under the leadership of artistic director Ron Bellamy, a well-known local handbell choir director and solo ringer, the ensemble currently plays on six and one-half octaves of Schulmerich bells. Handchimes and a large number of percussion instruments are also used.
The group’s repertoire spans original compositions, transcriptions of classical literature, and arrangements from a wide array of musical genres. The spring program - titled “The Storm Shall Pass!” - will include works such as Jason Krug’s “Resounding Fury,” Cathy Moklebust’s “Thundersnow,” and William Payn’s “Prisms.” The concert will also feature the world
changing to its current name in the late 1990s. The school built campuses in Brownstown, Mount Joy and Willow Street in the early 1970s.
“We (the three campuses) all have similar goals, and our students attend for similar reasons,” said Bruhn. “What differentiates Brownstown is our programs are unique and not duplicated at the other campuses. I think each campus takes its identity from the programs offered at each place.”

To honor the legacy of Henry and Ella Dodge Appenzeller, First United Methodist Church (UMC), 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, will host a weekend of music, lectures, and reflection on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. This year marks the 140th anniversary of the Appenzellers’ arrival in Korea, a pivotal moment in the history of Protestant Christianity in the region. The weekend’s activities will celebrate the historical ties between Lancaster and Korea, highlighting the enduring connection between the two communities through the universal language of music and shared faith.
Henry Appenzeller, a native of Souderton, was a member and assistant pastor at First UMC before being commissioned as a missionary to Korea in 1884. He and his wife, Ella, arrived in Korea on Easter Sunday in 1885. Henry played a foundational role in introducing Protestant Christianity to Korea, establishing a Methodist church in Seoul; founding Paichai Hakdang, now Pai Chai University; and contributing to the translation of the New Testament to Korean. His efforts fostered education and cultural exchange between Korea and the U.S.
The celebratory weekend will begin with lunch on April 26 at 12:15 p.m., followed by a lecture - “What’s So Special About Appenzeller?” - presented by Kale Yu, professor of religion and philosophy at High Point University, N.C.
On April 27 at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m., a choir and full orchestra will present the cantata “All Is Yours” by composer James Ra, who composed the piece to honor the Appenzellers and other missionaries to Korea. At 9:30 a.m., Yu will present a second lecture, “Women’s Advantage: Methodist Women Missionaries and Korean Bible Women.”
Those unable to attend on April 27 are invited to an open rehearsal of “All Is Yours” on April 26 at 10 a.m. Parking is available in a lot behind the church. Nursery and child care are provided at all Sunday services. For more details, visit www .engagegodfirst.org/events /appenzeller-weekend or call 717-394-7231.
