By personalizing program’s fifth PIAA title, Crusaders made it special
BY JEFF FALKIn many ways, state championships are the pinnacle of athletic achievement. For the Lancaster Catholic girls’ basketball team, they also represent personal growth, the ultimate reward for commitment and a proliferation of excellence.
On March 21 at Hershey’s Giant Center, the Crusaders captured the fifth state title in program history with a convincing triumph over Westmont Hilltop. The victory placed an exclamation point on an individual and collective journey
that was years in the making.
“First and foremost, I tell the girls to play for themselves,” said
it for the girls beside you and the girls behind you. We also say do it for your school, your community, your family.”
Township students learn local history from art
BY JEFF FALKSome things just pair well together, like school districts and societies, like competitions and learning, like art and history.
The Manheim Township School District’s historical art contest, sponsored by the
Manheim Township Historical Society (MTHS), combines history and art in a unique and educational way. By all accounts, the inaugural exercise was one of those rare win-win-win scenarios.
“Art and history do work well together,” said Ben Webber,

In the championship-clinching 56-39 win over Westmont Hilltop, the Crusaders established a 29-23 halftime advantage, then outscored their opponents 10-4 in the third quarter. Seniors Mary Bolesky and Rylee Kraft both tallied 22 points for Lancaster Catholic.
By winning 10 straight playoff games, the Crusaders finished their 2023-24 campaign with an overall mark of 29-2.

BY JEFF FALKSometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.
The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.
“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy
Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

Art contest
MTHS’ president. “They’re very connected. History can be expressed and understood in new ways that connect us all. History is our first science, our first way to understand the world. Art is a way of re-examining that history, of restating our history. You don’t have to read a book, you don’t have to listen to a lecture, to appreciate history. It can have a life of its own, a vibrancy.”
In conjunction with the local school district, MTHS conducted its initial historical art contest from early February to the beginning of March, and some of the 52 judged entries were displayed at Reflections Restaurant, 1390 E. Oregon Road, Leola, once the site of the historic Oregon Tavern. Prizes were awarded in three categories: kindergarten through fourth grade in two dimensions, kindergarten through fourth

grade in three dimensions and grades nine through 12 in two dimensions.
Contestants were directed to artistically depict the Oregon Tavern, which was originally built in the 1700s.
“What we were trying to do is get the next generation aware and engaged with historical resources,” said Webber. “With the Oregon Tavern, we wanted to give a sense of the legacy that’s been passed on to us. We got some comments back with the entries and clearly some of the kids went there. This is part of who we are as a township.”
All 52 of the entries were judged by a three-person panel made up of MTHS members. They were all distinctively creative, and each student came away with a better historical understanding of the Oregon Tavern.
First-place winners were Lennon Huxta, kindergarten through fourth grade, 2D; Mason Mitchell, kindergarten through fourth grade, 3D; and Sophia Sokol, grades nine through 12, 2D.
“There were so many prizes we wanted to give,” said Webber. “One of the entries was a remarkable 3D Lego version that brought the Oregon Tavern to life. Another was an incredible black-and-white pencil drawing of the Oregon Tavern. There were coloring pages filled in with crayons or paints. One of the 3D entries was made of recyclable and sustainable materials. There were some real creative things using different elements.”
“Some of (the students) had a vision of what they wanted to express through art, and they did it,” Webber continued. “They were so happy to see their work
put on display and recognized. It’s important for them to know what they do matters. They were so into it. We gave them a brief story of the Oregon Tavern and its history. We hope the kids learned something about it.”
Webber said that the Manheim Township School District was instrumental in pulling off the art contest and that school officials were open to conducting it again next year.
“We were so delighted with how it all came together,” said Webber. “The school district surprised us by saying they wanted us to judge it. Reflections Restaurant was so enthusiastic; they said, ‘We want to put the artwork on display.’ It was great for us because we got to show off the historic nature of the Oregon Tavern. It was a win all the way around.”
Concert to conclude church anniversary celebration
On Sunday, April 21, nationally renowned concert organist Daniel Aune will close the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Grace Lutheran Church, 517 N. Queen St., Lancaster, with a 4 p.m. organ recital.

The program will include several larger organ works and a number of short, hymnbased pieces. Highlighting the three-manual Schlicker pipe organ at Grace Church, the concert will feature Bach’s Fantasy and Fugue in G minor; a setting of “Now Thank We All Our God” by former Grace Church organist Timothy Albrecht, who went on to be the organ professor at Emory University in Atlanta; “Humoresque: A Toccatina for Flute” by early 20th-century composer Pietro Yon, organist at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City; and “Finale” from the Sixth Organ Symphony by Charles-Marie Widor. Aune will share personalized

program notes with the audience.
Aune is organ professor at the Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He holds a doctorate in organ and a sacred music diploma from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y.

girls’ show of joy after the game, just all of their hard work paying off in a state championship,” said Detz. “When you come to Lancaster Catholic, I think you expect to play for championships. The girls worked their tails off to get this opportunity. It’s easy to say we had everyone back, but it’s a lot harder to do. It’s a grind. The girls really bought into it and put the time and effort in. My goal is to get better every day, and I thought we did that by playing the best teams we could.”
A fifth state title wasn’t the only championship that the Crusaders won during the 202324 campaign. Lancaster Catholic also claimed its 21st District Three Class AAA championship and its 17th Lancaster-Lebanon League crown earlier in the winter.
“Our expectations and hopes coming into the season as a team were to win a state championship,” said Kraft. “Our hard work, determination and motivation all set us up for the success that we achieved this season. Losing in the (state) semifinals last season was a major motivator for us, and we worked to come out even stronger this season. This season, we came out with a newfound strength of being able to handle pressure situations in important games, which was crucial to our success.”
“A lot of the great Lancaster Catholic teams didn’t win state championships,” said Detz, who just completed his 10th season as the head coach. “Each team is so unique and so precious. What I can say is that this team was one of the most dedicated groups of girls I’ve had. Their thirst for excellence never wavered. We wanted to have our own legacy. I don’t want to talk about where they rank in history.
from pg 1
It’s hard to compare. I can just tell you they’re special.”
While the Crusaders were incredibly consistent throughout the season, they were playing their best basketball at the end. There may not have been a turning point, but there was a light bulb moment.
“I go back to that first playoff game in the league playoffs against Manheim Township,” said Detz. “Manheim Township was a good team, and we were staring down a 14-point deficit two minutes into the second quarter. I didn’t call a timeout. I had belief in the team. We were down by four points at halftime, and it just calmed everyone down, then we won with three seconds left. I think that was the game where it all came together for us. It really solidified the team.”

Travel Fair
Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.
“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by

food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.
In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours; food vouchers; and more.
“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”
According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.
“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.
“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”
