Everybody has a story to tell. Sara Palczewski wants to tell those stories - in compelling, compassionate and personal ways.
But Palczewski’s own story may be just as engaging.
“I think what makes me good at what I do is that I’m hardworking. I don’t ever stop working,” said Palczewski. “It’s making sure I’m well-versed in everything. I’ll always do what people need me to do and everything I’m asked to do. I’ve gotten to a position where I feel comfortable being a storyteller. The best part of my career is the human and personal side of it. It’s fun to get to know people and connect with all these athletes.”
A 2014 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS), Palczewski is a sports reporter, sports multimedia journalist, sports anchor and New Orleans Saints insider for Nexstar Media Group’s WVLA and WGMB television stations in Baton Rouge, La. Palczewski’s main duties revolve around covering the Saints year-round, but she also covers LSU Division I collegiate sports through feature stories, interviews and highlight production.
“I try to keep things
conversational,” said Palczewski, 29. “I try to keep it even-keeled for everyone. I’m always trying to be a better storyteller. I try to have fun on camera. You just talk about what you know. You’re confident in what you know because you’ve done all your prep work.”
Relatable, vulnerable and confident, Palczewski projects a certain presence on camera. It’s a combination of talent and hard work, but when the camera lights come on, so does Palczewski.
“I think everybody has an ‘on’
switch,” said Palczewski. “But for the most part, what you see on camera is the way I am at home. For the most part, what you see is what you get. You want to make sure everybody knows your personality and who you are.”

High school theatrical performances demand a bunch of hard work. They require a huge commitment of time, energy and effort.
A group of Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) students has been diligently working hard on its interpretation of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The finished product is now about 10 days away from being ready to present to the public.
“One of the challenges with this production is that we’ve had five weeks to prepare (as of early April),” said Steffan Bomberger, the director of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” “It’s a much more intensive experience. It’s similar to a working experience for the students. This plot is also an opportunity for kids with a passion for theater to show what they can do, which I really love to see.”
“(The students are) putting in above and beyond the typical workload,” he added. “They’re spending a whole amount of their own time drilling their

Jesse Rothacker is a proud “herper.”
As he explained, that’s the term for people who love reptiles and amphibians. Rothacker, who directs Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a nonprofit rescue and education organization in the Manheim area, is also a founding member of the Lancaster Herpetological Society (LHS). The organization celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
The group formed after Adam Darrenkamp, a student at Millersville University, wanted to open his college-based group to the entire reptile-loving public, Rothacker said. Darrenkamp connected with local nature expert Jack Hubley, who introduced the student to other local nature enthusiasts, including Rothacker, and the rest is history.
numerous zoos, including ZooAmerica, the Philadelphia Zoo and the Bronx Zoo. The group held walks and brought in speakers such as zookeepers, breeders, hobbyists, authors, photographers and researchers.
“It was all the most interesting and obscure stuff herp lovers could ever imagine,” Rothacker said. “Meanwhile, we also did the most laid-back ‘members’ nights,’ which were just a show-and-tell format where people could bring in their own herps to share. One time a guy brought in a scaleless snake, which I didn’t even know was possible!”
everyone’s desire to gather.”
While it’s time to say goodbye to regular LHS meetings, it’s also a chance to remember the club’s impact.
to hear his passion for herpetology.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. Three of the founding members are still active in the club. Zach Barton is a biology teacher from Lancaster. Roy Mellot is a chemist from Lititz, and Rothacker runs his organization out of Elm. “Each one of us has served in different leadership roles like president, vice president, treasurer and board members, as well as giving talks and leading walks,” Rothacker said. “I believe we were all in our 20s when the club started. I remember Zach sometimes bringing his baby to early meetings. His baby is now in college!”
Over the years, members of LHS guided behind-the-scenes tours of
At its peak, the LHS had about 50 active members, but over the years, the group had dwindled in size to just a few people who regularly attend meetings. So, LHS members decided to stop holding monthly meetings after hitting the 20-year mark last month.
“We eventually had only 5% of the members doing 95% of the work in our last few years,” Rothacker stated, noting that the pandemic impacted the long-term success of the club’s in-person gatherings. “It just became unsustainable. In our heyday, we had a great team of leaders collaborating for all kinds of achievements and many hands made for light work. But some people moved away or ended up in different seasons of life with kids or jobs and had to pull back from the club. Meanwhile, the advent of social media slowly crept in and replaced
“LHS was a wonderful group where older generations of reptile-lovers shared their passion for these animals with younger generations,” Rothacker said. “In our final meeting, we remembered at least five LHS members who have passed away since the club began. We also highlighted several teenagers who spent many years with the club before growing up and starting successful herpetology and nature careers. I know the older generation would be so proud if they could see the younger members carrying on the mission of conservation and education. LHS is a great reminder to take what you love and share it to inspire the next generation.”
And while LHS will no longer be meeting in person, the members still plan to share their enthusiasm for herpetology.
“The group of friends that made up LHS are still friends, and we still love herpetology,” Rothacker noted. “We will continue networking together to share our love for herpetology in smaller circles and other outlets.”
“Imagine discovering there’s a secret world, a parallel universe, that only a few people know about,” he said. “Now imagine someone gave you a portal to enter that world and be a part of it. Herpetology is crazy like that. These creatures exist by the millions, but they are practically invisible.” He especially enjoys the opportunities he’s had to highlight herpetology for others.
“Recently I introduced my friend Andre, age 45, to spring amphibian migration, and he was instantly hooked,” he recalled. “He spent five decades of his life in the great outdoors and had no idea that giant salamanders with bright yellow spots were living all around us. Then on a warm, rainy night in March, I took him onto some low-lying back roads, and he met hundreds of them. The disappearing/reappearing act of reptiles and amphibians is so magical, it’s addictive. These creatures are amazing if you are lucky enough to find them.”

He emphasized that people who want to learn more about herpetology can find information in books and magazines as well as online at sites such as his YouTube channel, ForgottenFriendReptileTV.

Speaking with Rothacker, it’s easy
lines. It’s a lot; there’s no doubt about it. But there’s a really huge payoff.”
That payoff will come on Saturday, April 26, in the form of a pair of public performances of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” one at 2 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. in LCDS’ 580-seat Gardner Theatre, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. Tickets for the show can be purchased at https://lcds.simple tix.com or at the door prior to each performance.
“It’s light-hearted because it’s geared toward a younger audience,” said Bomberger. “Charles Shulz wrote it, and his message is, ‘Sometimes it’s OK for kids not to have OK feelings.’ Throughout, Charlie Brown is asking himself, ‘Am I a good person? Am I doing the right thing?’ It’s a personal question we should all be asking ourselves: ‘Are we being kind to those around us?’”
More than 40 LCDS students in grades seven through 12 are involved with the production, 12 actors and actresses and about 30 stage crew members. The show’s double cast features high-schoolers Michael Collins and Jason Micciche as Charlie Brown, Amanda Biscoe and Julia Davis as Sally Brown, Jane Zobian and Linn Rosener as Snoopy, Abby Liu and August Gallo as Lucy Van Pelt, Ryan Kong and Assata Flowers as Linus Van Pelt and Nate Weiss and Emmie Achorn as Schroeder.
“These kids love context. These kids love meaning,” said Bomberger. “These kids are looking for greater meaning at their school and in life. These are introspective kids, and
they’re my favorite students to work with.”
“Through our tight-knit, high-effort casts and diverse array of shows, from tackling real-world subjects like in our fall show ‘Radium Girls’ to the whimsical fun of the winter musical ‘Tuck Everlasting,’ it helps bring the students of otherwise separate circles together into a fun and fulfilling experience,” said Nate. “All the things I’ve learned about others and myself in the past year could never be replaced. Our spring show, ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,’ is a perfect example. The small group cast allows everyone to have their own moments on and off the stage. The potential of the program continues to grow, and I can’t wait to see where we’re heading.”
Work on “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” began with auditions on March 3. Since the first rehearsal on March 17, the cast and crew have been rehearsing about 22 hours a week to get ready for the shows.
“We are constantly redefining (the students’) expectations and their definitions of what excellence means,” said Bomberger. “Excellence is a wonderful thing, and striving for excellence helps us become better people. I’m in the business of teaching students to pursue excellence in all they do.”
“In a scholastic setting, there’s regular turnover,” continued Bomberger. “What happens in that turnover is new leadership emerges. You get to see these students grow into leadership skills that they didn’t ever know they could develop.”

career launched through a journalism degree from Auburn University, Palczewski has already covered two NFL championship games, an NCAA Division I men’s basketball Final Four and a Houston Astros baseball opening day. During that time, Palczewski has discovered a great many things, not the least of which is what she’s learned about herself.
I am today.”
Through familial relationships, Palczewski has been around sports all of her life. At LCHS, she was an accomplished basketball and soccer player before three concussions in two and a half years derailed her playing days at the age of 16.
Friday, April 25th • 11:00am - 7:00pm
“It takes a lot of work,” said Palczewski. “It’s just a matter of being more comfortable and confident in yourself. I look at myself a year ago, and I’m completely different, just because of the time. It’s fun to watch the evolution of your on-air career.”
“I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of great mentors,” Palczewski continued. “I’ve learned to never give up on yourself. I’ve evolved into a much better storyteller than I ever thought I could have. You never know where things are going to take you. If I would’ve given up on things, I don’t think I’d be where

“My years at Lancaster Catholic were probably one of the most difficult times in my life because I had to give up my sports playing career,” said Palczewski. “It was difficult, but I think it helped mold me into the person I am today. It aided in my work ethic. It was a huge life-changing event, but having a support system helped me through it.”
“Regardless, I think this was the path I was taking,” continued Palczewski. “It might have accelerated the process. I’m not sure if I would’ve played sports in college. But ever since I was in middle school, I knew I wanted to be in sports journalism.”
