Fish Story: Second Blue Skies Fundraiser Scheduled

n the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown.

The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.”

Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held at

Camp Mack on Sunday, May 16, rain or shine. Area residents who enjoy fishing are invited to take part in the event. The adult open and hero tournament, for those age 16 and older, will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. The adult hero category will include participants who are Purple Heart recipients or Gold Star family members.

Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The children’s open and hero tournament will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Child hero category members will include children of Purple Heart recipients or members of Gold Star families. This year, only 30 adult and 30 child participants will be registered.

The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass.

BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware.

The decades-old ministry is part of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides resources, educational workshops, See BASIS pg 3

According to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) theater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had to be canceled, Sauder wanted to choose a spring show that would showcase students’ individual talents. “(Sauder) took a script that was a lot of acting and added singing and dancing,” said Elie. “Everyone gets to shine in their own way (in this show).”

YWCA Lancaster will host its annual Race Against Racism with an interactive/educational twist, as this year’s event will offer a history lesson along with the race. The Race Your Way Race Against Racism will run from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 22.

“This is an opportunity to use our 5K course through Lancaster with an opportunity to learn about various historic sites or make your own race in your neighborhood, on your treadmill or any other way that works for you,” explained Stacie Blake, CEO of YWCA Lancaster.

A Kids Fun Run is also part of the event this year, and children age 12 and under are encouraged to participate in a 100-yard dash virtually. “This year we have a special gift for youth participants,” Blake said. “Zetta Elliott, an awardwinning author recently published a children’s book set in Lancaster, ‘Roots Run Deep.’

It is illustrated by a Lancaster artist, Gracie Berry.” Every child who signs up will receive the book, which tells the story of the resilience and determination of Africans as they resist enslavement and fight for their rightful place as citizens of the United States.

Blake encourages anyone to sign up for the race, adding, “In addition to supporting our work, by participating in the race you will learn more about your community, get outside unless you run your way on your treadmill - and learn more about the issues impacting Lancaster today.”

the longest-running Race Against Racism in the country, she noted. As always, the race is a fundraiser for the YWCA’s programs. This year’s race supports the new Center for Racial and Gender Equity.

“This is a division of YWCA that focuses on education, advocacy and community engagement in our quest to create an equitable community for all residents,” Blake stated.

One option for this year’s race will be to utilize a selfguided course through Lancaster city with a curated Race Against Racism playlist featuring music and spoken word about historic stops along the route.

“This year we wanted to make a stronger connection with our important mission of eliminating racism and empowering women,” Blake said. “Our first step was to work with the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania to identify six key sites of historical significance to African Americans in Lancaster. Our professional race coordinator used these points to map and measure a new 5K course.”

Parkinson’s Wellness Event Posted In recognition of April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Lititz recCenter will host its third annual Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle on Saturday, April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will be limited to 25 attendees so that guests can be well-spaced for comfort and safety.

The event will feature a free forum for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease. Attendees will meet experts who are local professionals working in Parkinson’s disease and related fields. Information about fitness for Parkinson’s recovery, speech therapy, wellness and massage, and residential living services will be among the information and resources shared.

Fitness programs that Lititz recCenter offers for Parkinson’s wellness will be showcased, and individuals and their partners or caregivers will be provided an opportunitity to try elements of regularly offered programs. Attendees are encouraged to dress in comfortable clothing to participate in a light exercise demonstration of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) classes.

RSB at the Lititz recCenter is in its third year, and the program has doubled in number of participants.

RSB is led by certified coach and personal trainer Erica Johnson, who is Lititz recCenter’s fitness coordinator. This program is focused on maintaining functional health of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Large-scale movements and smaller muscular control are both engaged throughout the classes, which incorporate boxing routines. RSB is supported by trained volunteers who seek to help each participant get the most out of classes regardless of physical ability.

The Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle is free to attend. Staff and guests are asked to wear face coverings while participating in the program.

LMHS from pg 1 “All the World’s a Stage,” a series of six folk tales from Italy, India, Spain, West Africa, Ireland, and Arabia, will be presented in the patio area of Millstream Hall with the audience in the parking lot between Millstream and the Rutt building on the school campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Shows will be staged on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 29, 30, and May 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets, and they are welcome to bring picnic lunches to create their own dinner theater ex perience. To enhance the cultural experience, traditional songs and dances from around the world will be presented between the skits.

Cast member Isaac Kraenbring reported that some students will be playing as many as six different characters, since each folktale is its own complete story. He described his part in one tale, noting that Sauder has encouraged students to develop each character they play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of ob jects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring.

Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel.

Student Sofia MascialeWalmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies.

Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters.

“Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch.

Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.”

Women’s Giving Circle Plans Meeting Dayspring Christian Academy invites women interested in learning more about the Women’s Giving Circle program to attend the membership meeting at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville, on Tuesday, April 20, at 8 a.m. Dayspring created the Women’s Giving Circle, which is designed to bring together women who are committed to the school together to harness the power of collective giving.

Participants include family members, friends, or other community members. The Women’s Giving Circle members pool their donations and invest in projects intended to build and strengthen the school.

The 2020 Giving Circle supported a resin printer and a drying rack for art, a field study to Sight & Sound Theatre, warm-up shirts for Dayspring athletics teams, equipment for the Dayspring science lab, and outdoor picnic tables for all grades.

Any woman can join the Giving Circle at Dayspring by making an annual contribution of a set amount and a commitment to participate in the group’s Lunch and Learn in February, where members see their funds in action; social membership meeting in April; and annual meeting in October. Each year, the combined contributions of the Women’s Giving Circle members will be used to support specific projects and educational services at Dayspring. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron.

When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry.

“Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his

Steps to Success, which provides preschool and day care services in Leola, has always run a summer camp, but this year, camp will be held off-site at Leola Elementary School, 11 School Drive, Leola. Along with a new location, Adriana Witman, director of school-age programs, has planned a variety of activities and theme weeks to hold the interest of children who attend.

Camp will be offered for children who have completed kindergarten through those who have completed sixth grade from Wednesday, June 9, through Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily on Mondays through Fridays. Breakfast and a snack will be provided by the camp. Campers should pack a lunch to bring along.

According to Witman, health checks will be completed each morning. Masks must be worn during camp activities, and campers will be socially distanced.

Campers will be grouped based on the elementary school they attend with participants being added to the smallest group.

According to Witman, theme weeks will focus on art, reptiles, weather, outer space, undersea creatures, and more. Special events and day trips that will tie into themes will include a visit with Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a trip to see Disney’s “Descendants” at the Dutch Apple, a possible field trip to an amusement arcade, and regular visits to the Leola Park Pool. Witman also hopes to connect with Sea World in Florida to take part in a virtual education program about whales or stingrays, with opportunities for students to ask questions.

When Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) musical, looked into securing the rights for a spring show that the school would be able to stream, she did not know that her choice of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be met with intense student enthusiasm.

“This group was jumping out of their skin with excitement,” recalled Wagner, who added that the students know the characters and the melodies and wanted to work on learning the show as soon as the books arrived. “‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a mermaid princess with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land.

When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream.

Wagner has been directing rehearsals for the 46 students in the cast, crew, and orchestra. She noted that the students’ masks make it harder for her to judge the work of the ensemble, but she praised the singers in the lead roles and noted that many members of the small orchestra will need to play more than one instrument during the performance. Wagner noted that creating convincing underwater scenes through choreography, staging, lighting, and costumes is also a challenge.

During a year of uncertainty, Wagner said she is happy to offer students roles playing the iconic Disney characters.

“They needed something they love and can grab on to,” she said.

It will be a busy weekend at Manheim Christian Day School on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, when the school holds its 45th annual benefit auction and family fun days.

The event will kick off with a dine-in or drive-through pork barbecue dinner on Friday from 3:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The dinner will include Peters’ Barbecue pulled pork, a baked potato, applesauce, a pickle, a homemade roll, a dessert and a beverage. Bake sale items will also be available in the school’s gym. Advance tickets for the barbecue must be reserved by Friday, April 16, said Jen Kosydar, events coordinator and auction committee member. A limited number of walk-in tickets will be available for the barbecue.

A silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and will run through noon on Saturday, Kosydar said. Students from Lead Now, a seventh- and

eighth-grade student leadership group, will lead a welcome at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a live auction as well as presentations of class projects. “This includes the ‘Seed to Sow’ project, where each fourth-grade student is given $10 to use toward creating and selling a product to sell in the month leading up to the auction,” Kosydar explained.

“Each of their products is then auctioned off that evening.

(Other) items for the auction will include a children’s wooden picnic table, a handmade quilt, yard games and dessert trays, all personalized by individual classes.”

On Saturday, the live auction will begin at 9 a.m. Specific items will be highlighted throughout the day, such as tools, hunting, camping and fishing items, lawn and garden equipment, general merchandise and gift certificates.

Saturday will also feature children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, face painting and games. Among the additional activities on Saturday

Heart Of The Home Gala Posted United Zion Retirement Community will hold its Heart of the Home Gala on Thursday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. Due to COVID-19, the event will take place via Zoom; however, it will still include a meal, which may be enjoyed while watching the livestream. The gala will feature a few musicians from the United Zion community. The event will help to raise money for the Heart of the Home project, which includes a new chapel auditorium.

Those purchasing tickets will have a choice of filet mignon with mushroom demi-glace with herbed cous cous or vegetarian Southwestern stuffed peppers with black beans and rice. All meals come

with a starter of a Caesar salad, a side of asparagus spears with lemon butter and a lemon mousse cake with raspberry sauce for dessert.

The meals are part of United Zion’s Home Apron program.

As such, meals will come with preparation instructions so each person can prepare his or her filet mignon to the temperature of his or her liking.

Meals can be picked up on April 29 between 7:30 and 10 a.m. or between 3 and 6 p.m.

The meals will be fully prepared but not ready-to-eat, so there about 10 minutes of cooking time is required.

with room for overflow for larger events. The gala and silent auction are part of the fundraising campaign for the Heart of the Home and will help fund the cost of the project, which is estimated at $1 million.
