The return of the annual PA Family Travel Fair will offer opportunities to see mascots, experience magic, and even meet a few Keystone State cowboys.
The last time Clair Leaman planned a “Messiah” Sing-along to be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, it was the spring of 2020. “We canceled that one,” said Leaman, who, along with others, organizes the Sing-along at Westminster, as well as a Christmas event in Chester County. The Chester County presentation was held again in December of 2021. “We didn’t know what to expect,” said Leaman. “We had a pretty good turnout, and I was amazed

The people are still with us and still wanting to sing.” The 23rd Messiah Singalong will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, on Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m. Leaman will conduct the soloists, choir, and orchestra, and guest conductor Bruce Gerlach of Lancaster Bible College will conduct the “Hallelujah” chorus. The sing-along is unique because area vocalists are invited to purchase or rent
“Messiah” scores and then take part in the presentation. The event is also open to those who would just like to listen. The tradition has its roots in the founding of the Chester County Christian Chorale by Leaman in 1976. The Lancaster version of the sing-along, which only includes the second and third parts of Handel’s “Messiah,” began in 1998. “We start with ‘Behold the Lamb of God,’” explained Leaman. At first, the concert was held at Neffsville Mennonite Church, but in the spring of 2000, it was moved to Westminster.
New soloists for the event are soprano Sarah Shafer and bass Steven Condy. Returning soloists are contralto Heidi Kurtz and tenor Timothy Bentch. Shafer has sung with the San Diego Opera and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Condy is on the roster of The Metropolitan Opera, as well as a number of national operas. Kurtz is a core member of the Philadelphia Singers and has performed solo with the Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia. Bentch served as a missionary in Hungary, where he
also sang at the Hungarian State Opera. Frank Dodd, who oversees music at Westminster, has joined the board of the organization as special adviser to the director. He will play the harpsichord in the April 22 presentation. Leaman recalled that more than 100 took part in the Christmas event. “Come as you are,” he invited, noting that masks are optional. The discussion will initially focus on a video re-enactment by a survivor of a World War II troop ship that was served by four chaplains who made the ultimate sacrifice for their flock. The group will then turn its attention to the book “Faith Under Fire” by Roger Benimoff, a chaplain who served two tours of duty in Iraq. Discussion will highlight the unique demands and stressors faced by military chaplains and the causes of PTSD by those who have served in the Middle East wars. A second, optional book is “For God and Country” by Brian Bohlman. This book is an overview of the chaplain’s doctoral dissertation, in which he researched the needs and qualifications of someone who feels the calling to be a military chaplain. A native of Rockaway, N.J., McDonald was two-time district champion and a state bronze medalist. At East Stroudsburg State College, he captured the PSAC gold medal at 145 pounds. He then coached wrestling at Warwick High School from 1975 to 2003, compiling a record of 318-75-2. His teams won 13 section titles and two District III titles. He was District III Coach of the Year in 1980-81. McDonald has been inducted into the Warwick High School Athletic Hall of Fame, East Stroudsburg Hall of Fame, Lancaster-Lebanon Wrestling Hall of Fame, District III Wrestling Hall of Fame, and Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was four-year starter at Manheim Township High School, where he still holds the current records for career goals (40) and single-season goals (26). He was captain of the 1996 team and garnered First Team All-State, Regional All-American, and Lancaster-Lebanon League MVP honors that year. He also coached soccer at Garden Spot from 1965 to 1996, compiling a varsity record of 144-111-27 over 17 seasons. During his tenure, Garden Spot won several titles. Stern was named Lancaster-Lebanon Coach of the Year for baseball in 1971 and for soccer in 1983. He was inducted into halls of fame at Elizabethtown College, Garden Spot High School, and Pequea Valley High School. Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 43 annual induction banquet on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m. The event will take place at Enck’s Banquet and Conference Center, 1461 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The inductees are Albert Ellis Sr., Earl “Buddy” Stoudt, Jerry McDonald, Theodore King, Pete Shellenberger, and Ray Stern. Ellis is being inducted for basketball. At Columbia High School in 1966, he was second team All-County, and his team won Lancaster County Section and District III Class B championships. In 1967, his senior season, he led the county in scoring with 25.5 points per game. He was First Team All-County and Honorable Mention Small School All-State. Ellis finished his high school career with 913 total points, and his team’s record was a combined 59-10. After high school, Ellis played for the Lancaster Big 5, an amateur team traveling the East Coast. With this team, he won three regional championships, two national championships, and 10 tournament MVP awards. Stoudt is being inducted for football. At Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS), he was a member of the unbeaten 1956 football team. He was a First Team Central Penn Catholic League All-Star in 1957. Stoudt received a full football scholarship to the University of Richmond, where he set multiple singlegame and single-season

Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) will offer a workshop to train volunteers on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14. The workshop will be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. CDS has been meeting the needs of children since 1980, working cooperatively with FEMA and the American Red Cross to provide care for children and families following disasters. The workshop is open to anyone from the community who is over age 18 and has an interest in serving children following disasters. There is a cost to attend,

Church Marks First Anniversary, Slates Activities ConnectUs Church recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Pastor Kevin Greene of Lancaster opened the church on Jan. 31, 2021, and throughout its first year, the church offered weekly Sunday morning worship services, weekly life groups, kids’ programming, and personalized next-step groups. ConnectUs Church’s mission is to connect people to God’s next step for their lives. The church is a diverse community of people that
values developing authentic relationships that help people to follow Jesus. The church also seeks to provide relevant biblical teaching. Prior to starting ConnectUs Church, Greene was the associate pastor at North Annville Bible Church. He earned a Master of Divinity from Baptist Bible Seminary and completed a church planting residency at Life Church Lancaster. ConnectUs Church meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. in Reel

The DUI Council of Lancaster County recently unveiled a billboard in Lancaster County created by student mentors of Leaders of Future Generations, a program of Compass Mark. The group has now created fo u r b i l l b o a r d s fo r t h e council.
The plant sale sponsored by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. An online presale will run until Wednesday, April 20, featuring garden kits for butterflies, sun, shade, and pollinators chosen by Master Gardeners. The in-person sale will also include numerous varieties of native plants, plants for sun, shade, pollinators, perennials, and annuals. Tomato and pepper plants as well as a variety of herbs for vegetable lovers will also be available. Penlanco FCU Donates Aggressive Driving To Power Packs Project Enforcement Set Penlanco Federal Credit Union (FCU) hosted its third annual designer purse bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster on March 12. Penlanco FCU selects a beneficiary for this event each year, and this year, proceeds were donated to the Power Packs Project. A nonprofit organization, Power Packs aims to improve the mental and physical health of children by providing nutritious meals over the weekends when school breakfast and lunch programs are unavailable to them. According to Penlanco FCU’s CEO, Stacey Remick, more than 220 people attended the bingo event, raising
$13,229. This amount will provide 2,205 meals to help feed food-insecure children in the community. Penlanco FCU’s next bingo event will be on Friday, Oct. 14, with the recipient to be determined. Penlanco FCU was formed in 1938 to serve PPL Electric Utilities employees and now also serves employees of the City of Lancaster, UnCommon Pizza, Brubacher Excavating, Trinity Drilling and Blasting, Nine Brothers, Lancaster Works and Montgomery Insurance Agency. The Center for Traffic Safety announced recently that local law enforcement agencies from Adams, Lancaster, and York counties will join Pennsylvania State Police and over 300 other municipal agencies to conduct a statewide targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave that runs through Sunday, April 24. The goal of targeted enforcement is to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries, and deaths on roadways throughout the state. The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and
work zone awareness. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions will also be cited. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Participants will learn about applique, which is ornamental needlework sewn into fabric to form pictures or patterns. Friendship Community Chooses New CEO Friendship Community has announced Mary Ellen Farber as its new chief executive officer (CEO). Farber was scheduled to officially join Friendship Community on March 22, replacing Gwen Schuit, former CEO, who retired at the end of November 2021. Farber holds an MBA and completed doctorate-level coursework in organizational leadership through Eastern University. She is also a licensed personal care administrator, assisted living administrator and nursing home administrator. She most recently served as CEO for more than 12 years at another faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve individuals with intellectual disabilities. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization cultivating capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties since 1972. The organization offer an arts day program, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 24 residential homes serving a total of over 150 individuals in the two counties.

Honrade Earns Sports Honor Four student-athletes at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, were named conference Player of the Week for their performances for the week ending Feb. 27. Local students include Louise Honrade of Lititz. Honrade was named Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Player of the Week. Honrade dropped just five games total between singles and doubles to earn a pair of wins in the Dutchmen’s 5-4 loss at MAC Freedom power Wilkes University. The junior teamed with Jacquelyn McBride to win their No. 1 doubles match 8-2 and then swept her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Zoe Klein. Honrade is a graduate of Manheim Township High School. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in exercise science at LVC.
