Making something out of nothing is just being resourceful.

But Manheim Township has taken the concept to the next level. At the Manheim Township Compost Park, the township’s recycling program is making something useful out of undesirable materials.

“Mainly, we’re trying to recycle nature and put it back into our environment, our parks,” said Michelle Hooper, Manheim Township’s recycling coordinator, who oversees the compost park. “To me, the best thing about the compost park is it gives us an opportunity to take things people are throwing away and turn it into

Helping survivors of human trafficking

North Star Initiative invites you to join the fight against human trafficking. Welcome to the Battle will be held on Friday, April 14, at Grace Community Church, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run until 8:30 p.m.

“ Welcome to the Battle is an awareness and education event f or our community,” explained North Star executive director Melinda Clark. “It’s for anybody who wants to know more about what human trafficking is, how it’s affecting our community, and how we are working to end it.”

a

things people can use. It also benefits the environment.”

The Manheim Township Compost Park accepts garden residue, pruned shrubbery and trees, sod, leaves, grass clippings and Christmas trees; nothing else is accepted. The natural waste is ground and repurposed into wood mulch and compost, and then used at township parks and offered to township residents free of charge.

Use of the compost park, which is divided into sections for different types of materials, is limited to Manheim Township residents, and the service is offered for a modest fee. For card access to the gated compost park, township residents are charged depending on the size of their vehicles

and the size of their disposable waste loads. There are no attendants directing those dropping off yard waste.

Located at 2775 Oregon Pike, the Manheim Township Compost Park is open on Mondays to Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“I don’t think some people realize the benefit they have, being able to access a place that takes yard waste and turns it into something useful,” said Hooper. “It’s a really easy system to use. I’d encourage everyone to come and get a compost card and use it. It’s a wonderful service to the township.”

The land for the Manheim Township Compost Park was purchased in 2000, and after receiving approval

from the Department of Environmental Protection, the township began composting leaves there. A few years later, the compost park was opened to the public, including all Lancaster County residents.

But when Manheim Township instituted its gated system in 2021, the composting service was only offered to township residents.

Last year, Manheim Township residents used 168 tons of wood mulch produced at the compost park and 252 tons of compost.

For additional information on the Manheim Township Compost Park, go to www.manheimtownship.org and look in the Departments menu for Public Works and Compost Park.

The annual event will feature a panel of speakers as well as information booths from community organizations. Michelle Gehman, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn, will represent the hospitality industry, discussing ways to raise awareness of potential trafficking taking place in hotels and provide assistance to people who are being trafficked. North Star program director Paula Montijo will discuss the organization’s efforts to provide restoration and support to survivors of trafficking. Brad Ortenziand Andrea McHenry of ZOE International will talk about what survivors need in order to experience whole restoration. Andrea Meredith from She’s Somebody’s Daughter will speak about resources available to women who have experienced sexual exploitation.

Clark noted that other agencies will be on hand at the event to distribute information and provide resources to the community. “Our goal is to collaborate with community partners to network, maximize our resources, expand awareness of trafficking, abolish trafficking and work together to provide resources for survivors to experience restoration and live lives of their own choice,” she stated. “People in the community want to get involved to help, and this

event is an opportunity to help people understand what has been done already and what work we still need to do.”

Founded in 2010, North Star works with women who have been trafficked to provide physical, psychological and spiritual care. The organization recently opened The Survivor Center, where classroom and program space is located as well as a gym and other resources for residents of North Star’s restoration home.

Clark encourages anyone with an interest in the topic to attend Welcome to the Battle. “This is a cause that should matter to our entire community,” she said. “We tend to think of slavery in terms of something that happed 150 years ago, something we’ve abolished, but we don’t realize that modern-day slavery still exists in the form of human trafficking. We need to know this so we can be honest about what is happening in our community and our commonwealth.”

She hopes the event will also inspire people to join the fight. “Come learn about this and see how you can get involved and you can make a difference,” she remarked. “There are so many opportunities to help. We want to welcome anyone to the battle who wants to come. There is a space for everyone in the community to get involved.”

Group, founded in April 2022 by HARTZ Physical Therapy and CrushPD Fitness, meets on the first Wednesday of every month and features speakers from nutritionists and speech language pathologists to holistic therapists and representatives of Parkinson’s foundations. The meetings have grown consistently and are open to people with Parkinson’s, along with their caregivers, family members, and friends.

Greta Myers, a neurological physical therapist at HARTZ Physical Therapy, was instrumental in putting together this group. In addition to her growing list of Parkinson’s patients, she treats people with multiple sclerosis and is a Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist. Myers is active in the community and speaks at various events on the importance of physical therapy and the circle of care that is needed for those with Parkinson’s disease.

The City of Lancaster was recently awarded the largest federal competitive grant in its history, receiving over $12.7 million of Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant funding to implement Vision Zero initiatives. A grant launch celebration was held on March 17.

Vision Zero safety countermeasures are aimed at addressing severe and fatal crashes involving speeding, aggressive driving, and crashes at intersections. Project improvements will prioritize street design that encourages slower speeds, slower turns, and improved driver sightlines. These improvements include installing crosswalk upgrades, roadway lighting, signal improvements, leading pedestrian indicators, and “No Turn on Red” signs; implementing safety projects at schools; and conducting red light and speeding enforcement.

Women’s Giving Circle to meet

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host a Women’s Giving Circle membership meeting on Tuesday, April 18, at 8 a.m. The school invites women interested in learning more about the program to attend.

Dayspring created the W omen’s Giving Circle to bring together women who are committed to the schoolcommunity members, family members and friends - so they may harness the power of collective giving. The members of the Women’s Giving Circle pool their donations and invest in projects they believe will build and strengthen the school.

The 2022 Giving Circle supported new Bibles for lower school classroom use; a drying rack and jewelry supplies for art classes; tents for an

overnight field study trip to Gettysburg; a centrifuge machine, fingerprinting kits and digital thermometers for upper school science classes; sensory learning items for the school’s learning support program; books and puppets for first-grade classes; and wireless tour receivers for upper school field studies.

Any woman can join the Giving Circle at Dayspring by making an annual contribution of a set amount and a commitment to participate in the group’s Lunch and Learn, where members see their funds in action; the social membership meeting; and the annual meeting. Each year, the combined contributions of the Women’s Giving Circle membership are used to support specific projects and educational services at Dayspring. The membership votes annu-

ally in October on which projects will benefit from the fund.

Light fare and refreshments will be provided at the April meeting.

For more information or to reserve a seat at the April 18 meeting, contact Joanne Martin at 717-285-2000 or jmartin@dayspringchristian .com by Thursday, April 13.

Lancaster nonprofit donates to Cleveland Clinic

Spin4Gin, a Lancasterbased nonprofit organization, announced it has made a donation of $35,000 to the Cleveland Clinic to support sarcoma cancer research and

treatment.

Spin4Gin was established by lifelong Lancaster resident Ginny McCreary, who fought against stage IV CIC-DUX4 round cell sarcoma until her passing in August 2021 at age 34, leaving behind two small children, Ellie, 5, and Frannie, 3. Ginny, a graduate of Manheim Township High School and Elon University, along with her friends, founded Spin4Gin in 2020 to raise awareness of sarcoma while supporting innovative research and treatment options.

The donation to the Cleveland Clinic consists in part of funds raised through Spin4Gin’s annual Drive Out Sarcoma Golf Tournament, most recently held on Sept. 30, 2022, at Foxchase Golf Club in Stevens. It is also

made up of donations from individual donors and local businesses, including Annie Bailey’s, Conway Social Club, Luca, Per Diem and Stoner Grille.

Spin4Gin president Gus Payne, who is Ginny’s father, said Ginny felt that the team at the Cleveland Clinic, under the supervision of Dr. Peter Anderson, provided the best

Grange to offer scholarships

The Pennsylvania State Grange announced that members in good standing have the opportunity to receive educational assistance through several Pennsylvania Grange Foundation scholarship and loan programs this spring. Through this financial assistance, the Grange hopes to promote studies in agriculture and related fields with the goal of further supporting rural communities and bolstering local Granges. Several scholarships are available.

Established in 1996 by state delegate action, the Pennsylvania State Grange Foundation Scholarship is available to students entering their junior or senior year in college, and financial need must be demonstrated. Applicants are eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship each year, for a maximum of two years. Up to four scholarships will be awarded.

The Deaf Interpreter Scholarship is open to individuals

enrolled in a credible program leading to certification as an interpreter for the deaf. The Grange will award a $250 grant each year.

The Grange Scholarship Endowment at Penn State University recognizes the outstanding work of an undergraduate student enrolled in his or her sophomore, junior, or senior year at any campus of Pennsylvania State University. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. The recipient of this scholarship will be selected by the Penn State Office of Student Aid Scholarship Committee from nominees named by the Pennsylvania State Grange Scholarship Committee. The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded for one academic year and may be renewed for subsequent years provided the recipient continues to meet the conditions of eligibility and no other eligible students are identified.

The Rhone Grant is given in

honor of Leonard Rhone, the third Master of the Pennsylvania State Grange. This grant is available to students pursuing a degree in agriculture or human development and family services at Penn State University. One scholarship in the amount of $300 will be available each year. Eligible candidates must be a member in good standing and secure a recommendation from both the master of their Subordinate and Pomona Granges. Santee Student Loans were established by Ellis M. Santee, an active Grange member and rural doctor, to help Grange members obtain an education. Grange members or their children may apply for one of five $2,000 loans if they are a fulltime student at any institution accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). If selected, students will be required to sign a promissory note to
