Staving Off Cabin Fever

Since Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf ordered a statewide shutdown on March 16, those who found themselves at home - with or without children may be struggling to fill the hours in quarantine.

Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, based in Chester County, has not hesitated to see the value in the hours. “Take advantage of the quarantine and get some fresh air and exercise with your dog,” said Bauer, who recommended throwing a ball or flying disc or working on basic training techniques.

Dayspring Turns To Online Educating After Three-Day Break

On March 13, before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that schools would be closed, Dan Stone, Upper School principal at Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, talked with the school’s senior students.

“I jokingly told them they might have to graduate in July,” said Stone, who noted that the seniors were not happy with his announcement. “I told them it was a joke, (but) I can’t promise it will be May 30 (as planned). That might move a couple weeks.”

Staff Members Sought Cabin Fever from pg 1 For Summer Camp Aaron’s Acres is looking for team members for its summer camp. Applications are now available for paid staff positions for people age 18 and older and volunteer positions for people ages 14 to 17.

Aaron’s Acres offers morning and afternoon day camp sessions to people ages 5 to 21 during the summer months. Camp sessions offer opportunities to enjoy games, crafts, activities, swimming, music therapy, horseback riding, circle time and snack. The

staff-to-camper ratio is 1-to-1 or 1-to-2, and the camp is supervised by professional staff.

classes and other educational resources. Podcasts in an area of interest can help make the hours move more quickly, and online puzzles and games can also help keep the brain engaged.

The situation is ideal for families to spend time creating quality experiences and memories. Break out the board games or the playing cards or just engage in an old-fashioned game of charades. Getting outside is also a great option. Yard games such as croquet or badminton are good choices when the weather is fine. A piece of chalk can create a hopscotch game in seconds, and a length of rope can provide hours of jumping activity. Maintaining social distance is easier in the great outdoors, so walking, running, and bicycling are all ways for members of a family to stay active while spending time together in the fresh air.

In addition, those with school-age children may want to consider structuring days to keep a routine in place. Having meals, snacks, assignments, play, and other activities at approximately consistent times creates a sense of stability. Look for activities that encourage creativity. Remember the excitement of the possibilities that lie in repurposing an old shoebox? Children can feel that same sense of potential and utilize their imaginations with simple household items such as cardboard, crayons, cotton balls, and glue.

Mandy Leggett, a homeschooling Conestoga-area mother and president of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, suggested using puzzles to teach about places. Her 10-year-old son completes puzzles of

pictures from national parks, and the family does a virtual tour of each one as they put it together. Assembling the puzzle begins with a math assignment that measures the work surface to be sure there is room for the project.

With libraries closed, many families with children may be missing educational weekly activities. Some libraries are offering story times online.

Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library in New Holland, said that the organization is encouraging families to check out its online resources at www.elancolibrary.org. “Libby and OverDrive are apps that you can use to download ebooks and e-audiobooks for free with your library card,” said Smith. “Books are available for (children), teens, and adults.

For the preschoolers, (parents) can read along with Tumblebooks and BookFlix.”

Carol Wenger, youth and children’s librarian at Pequea Valley Public Library, added that anyone with an active Lancaster County library card may visit www.pvpl.org and click on eResources to find a multitude of great websites including Heritage, Automotive Repair, and Brainfuse.

At the Strasburg-Heisler Library, executive director Kristin Fernitz said that due dates for library materials patrons currently have at home have been moved to Wednesday, April 15. The outside drop box is emptied daily, and each returned item is disinfected.

“We have cleaned and disinfected all the toys used for the early childhood education programs and all the computers, tables, and chairs,” said Fernitz, who is looking ahead by working on upcoming activities, such as the

Also, now that there is time, maybe get to those activities that have been at the bottom of the “to-do” list for what seems like forever. Clean out the basement, the attic, or the garage.

Live in an apartment? Clean out the cupboards or closets. Sanitize countertops and other areas in kitchens and bathrooms regularly. Or maybe go through the closet and prepare for warmer weather by weeding out the clothing items that were not worn last year and are ready to be donated.

Another way to get ready for those days of summer is to pull out the lawn furniture or prepare the flower and vegetable beds. Go to the grill for a dinner that is different from the usual. Maybe delve into the freezer for some items that need to be used and exercise a little creativity by holding an impromptu barbecue.

Of course, venturing out to get food and other items, such as medications, is a necessity.

Going out in public means practicing social distancing for the health and safety of all, but it can also be an opportunity to serve the community. Have an elderly neighbor who is safer at home? Why not see what groceries or medicines can be picked up for them and left on their step or porch? Or consider purchasing a few extra nonperishables for the local food pantry during a regular shopping trip. Contact the organization that runs the pantry to find out what it needs and the best times and methods to drop off items.

There are opportunities to show children the value of community-mindedness, not wasting food or other goods or resources, healthy habits like hand-washing, and planning rather than panicking. And, of course, with many regular activities on hiatus, spend the time learning new things and making memories.

The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will rent garden plots for the 2020 growing season from Wednesday, April 15, through Thursday, Oct. 15. People of all skill levels can rent garden plots to grow their own flowers and vegetables. The plots are ideal for gardeners with limited space at home.

Gardeners can select either a 20by-20-foot or 20-by-40-foot plot.

Renters will pay a one-time seasonal fee, depending on the size of the plot selected. The garden plots are located off Farm View Drive just off Golf Road in Lancaster County Central Park.

The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place Sunday through Saturday, July 19 to 25. Open to students ages 14 to 16, this summer adventure is made possible through the Lancaster County Conservation District partnering with local sportsmen’s clubs.

Lancaster County Conservation District has partnered with the local clubs for 42 years to offer the weeklong summer field school that focuses on outdoor activities and the conservation of natural resources.

Students reside at the school within tents and use cots to demonstrate low-impact camping at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association in West Cocalico Township.

Interested students are invited to apply. Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience, and communication skills.

There are many study topics designed to empower students and ensure a sustained conservation legacy. Topics include stream restoration, biodiversity, orienteering, macroinvertebrate study, forestry, canoeing, wildlife management, archery, survival, and firearm safety.

In finding a balance, Stone asked teachers to employ the technology the school has been using for more than a decade in new ways. “Our students are accustomed to getting on the computer and following instructions that a teacher has laid out,� he said, noting that for a number of years DCA has employed a concept called the flipped classroom, where teachers introduce a concept by video and students work on problems at home before coming to the classroom to complete more problems with individual help from the teacher. Because of this, switching to learning online from home should not be difficult for the students, Stone said. “That’s not a big paradigm shift,� he noted.

Stone especially praised DCA’s elementary school teachers, who are generally not as accustomed to teaching online. Calling them “rock stars,� he noted that they jumped in with both feet and prepared lessons quickly for their students. Stone also lauded Leslie Schmucker, director of the school’s PS139 program for students with special needs, noting that Schmucker had a structured program ready for parents of PS139 students by 9 a.m. on March 14.

Following Wolf ’s initial announcement, DCA students were off only three days before resuming their studies from home. According to Stone, staff at the school, which pulls students from 11 Lancaster County school districts, as well as eastern York County, had anticipated that March 13 might be the last day of school for a while. “Our elementary school teachers scrambled to put things together for students to take home just in case,� recalled Stone, who added that the staff met at the school on March 16 to make plans for a hiatus of up to a month. “We called Monday through Wednesday (March 16 to 18) spring break,� said Stone. “Starting March 19, students were doing at-home work.�

Stone noted that the school, which serves children from kindergarten through 12th grade, was prepared to move forward so quickly because of the educational philosophy that is espoused. “Our mission as a school puts us in a really great position,� said Stone, who explained that DCA emphasizes education of children is a partnership between the school and home. “We have a good working relationship with all our families, and parents are involved with their student’s education, so there’s always a lot of communication between home and school,� he said.

As the staff worked to prepare for students to attend school from home, Stone emphasized balance. “Our primary goal is to utilize technology to facilitate our Principle Approach to education in these unique circumstances,� said Stone. The Principle Approach refers to a focus on

WellSpan Health has opened care locations across southcentral Pennsylvania dedicated solely to providing non-emergency care for COVID-19 patients. Patients who have no emergent health needs and are either confirmed or suspected by a health care provider to have COVID-19 can visit one of these locations.

The Wolf Administration also asks anyone who is healthy and able to consider volunteering with a local food bank or registering for the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania, as this time is creating an incredible strain on charitable organizations’ efforts. United Way of Pennsylvania’s 211 website is also compiling a list of organizations that need volunteers or resources so their work can continue.

Amidst Wolf’s continued mitigation efforts, including the state-wide closure of non-lifesustaining businesses and the recent stay at home order issued for several Pennsylvania counties, the work being done by food banks and their volunteers is lifesustaining and will continue. The orders do not prohibit food banks and their volunteers from offering food services, nor do they prohibit school districts from offering food services to children during the statewide school closure. Schools and school districts may continue to bring in essential employees involved in the preparation and distribution of meals for children.

The emergency Feeding Task Force, which consists of state agencies, charitable food networks, food retailers, and other partners and stakeholders, is working to identify available resources and provide food and water to communities in need.

The Wolf Administration reminds Pennsylvanians of food assistance resources available and what actions it is taking to ensure access to food does not stop in spite of the COVID-19 mitigation efforts. This pandemic has caused many people and families to find that they are suddenly food insecure and require assistance.

Pennsylvanians who need help feeding themselves or their family should find and contact their local food bank or pantry through Feeding Pennsylvania at www.feeding pa.org and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania at www.hungerfreepa.org.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) will continue to process applications and benefit renewals for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Emergency SNAP applications can be expedited and issued in five days. Pennsylvanians can apply for SNAP online at www.compass.state.pa.us.

DHS will continue to process application and renewal benefits, so people should continue to send in paperwork as usual. For anyone currently on SNAP who misses a deadline or who is unable to submit the paperwork or complete an interview or provide verifications for any reason during this emergency, DHS will ensure their SNAP benefit continues. DHS submitted a waiver request to the federal Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to ensure this continuity in benefits.

A few months ago, Veritas hired Bruce Etter as its academic dean. Etter, a national leader in online education, formerly

Local Authors Share Stories of “Foreign Lands” Ron and Joan Denlinger published three books recently, telling the stories of the journey they have been on for the last 35 years. Graduates of Lancaster Bible College and Lancaster General School of Nursing respectively, Ron and Joan’s dream was to serve in medical missions in a developing country. This plan was disrupted by the arrival of Kari, who was born with a profound genetic condition. The event crash-landed them in the unfamiliar and undesired world of disabilities.

“Joy in a Foreign Land” walks the reader through the Denlingers’ journey of learning to survive in this new territory, which was made even tougher when their second child was also born with the same debilitating illness. Despite the challenges of caring for their children, they started a church planting career, beginning in New England. In their second church ministry, their son, Ryan, passed away.

Having experienced two successful church plants, they were asked by their mission to be a resource to other pastors serving in small towns across America. Joan tells of taking the step of faith in leaving behind their comfortable home and moving their family into a travel trailer as their home for the next five years. “Faith in the Heartland”

is a story of their life-changing journey of working with churches while homeschooling their third child, Jeremy, and caring for their disabled daughter.

After getting an up-close look at many churches across America, many of which were struggling, Ron grew in his passion for healthy churches. Believing the most important thing for a church is to have a close relationship to Jesus, Ron wrote “Have We Lost our Head? - Reconnecting Churches to Jesus.” It is filled with many true incidents from churches he has visited.

After 25 years of ministry to churches, the Denlingers returned to Lancaster County to be available to care for their parents. The next unknown territory they entered was the world of foster care of children with medical needs. Of the several children they fostered, one of them needed a forever home.

They adopted Matthew on his third birthday. They also built an addition to their home, an in-law suite for Joan’s parents, and they are both full-time caregivers to these family members. Through their blog Ron and Joan share about their life.

State Extends Tax Deadlines The deadline to file Pennsylvania personal income tax returns with the Department of Revenue for 2019 has been extended to Wednesday, July 15. The new deadline mirrors the decision made in March by the Internal Revenue Service, which extended the federal tax-filing deadline.

All penalties and interest on 2019 personal income tax payments will also be waived through the new deadline. Taxpayers who make quarterly estimated payments will also receive an extension. Both first- and second-quarter payments will be due on

July 15.

The extension does not apply to local taxes. Pennsylvania residents are urged to check with their local tax collection agency to determine whether local taxes are still due on Wednesday, April 15.

Principal dancers from the New Jersey Ballet, the Colorado Ballet, and the Joffrey Ballet are slated to perform on May 2.

Yeliohin said he hopes that these top professional dancers, in conjunction with local ballerinas, will send a powerful message of not just standing up for a cause, but dancing for a cause.

Proceeds from the Relevé gala performance will be donated to the American Cancer Society (ACS), specifically in the area of pediatric cancer.

“Funds raised help ACS fund and conduct breakthrough research and give cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support,” said ACS spokesperson Erik McGaughey.

“Something exciting is coming to Lancaster,” said Jill Marhevka, media representative for the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy (VYIBA). “It is a unique fundraiser where the dance world joins hands with the local American Cancer Society.”

Dancers from Lancaster County and around the country will participate in Relevé, which is named for the French word that means “rise up” and is a classical ballet step. Relevé is also the name of the new nonprofit organization focused on children’s health, which was founded by Viktor Yeliohin.
