Meet & Mingle seeks to bring Parkinson’s disease into focus

Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological disease that physically, mentally, and emotionally affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States. The initial steps in treating it are awareness and education.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a complete list of exhibitors, food trucks, activities and giveaways, visit www.pafamilytravel.com. That’s the goal of the Lititz recCenter’s fourth annual Parkinson’s Program Meet & Mingle. Planned as a way of teaching and breaking down barriers, the free event will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lititz recCenter, 301 Maple St., Lititz.

Visitors can meet Parkinson’s disease warriors and current participants in the Lititz recCenter’s Rock Steady Boxing program, as well as doctors, a speech therapist, a registered dietitian, and a massage therapist. The Parkinson’s Program Meet & Mingle will address challenges in motor skills, coordination and balance, nutrition and diet, and speech.

“The goal is to spread the word about our boxing program,” said Erica Wolgemuth Johnson, coach of the Rock Steady Boxing program. “People are aware that Parkinson’s exists, but they may not be aware of how prevalent it is in the world or in the local community. What we’re doing in this class is not keeping it in the forefront as much in your daily life. Hopefully, we’re giving you a chance to have a higher-functioning life.”

Rock Lititz, PCA&D launch education center

Responding to the live event industry’s growth and its goal of next generation workforce development, Rock Lititz is adding an education center to its 108-acre campus.

Lancaster-based Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) and United Kingdom-based Academy of Live Technology (ALT) at Production Park, formerly Backstage Academy, have partnered to create the ALT at Rock Lititz. The new ALT and the partnership among Rock Lititz, PCA&D and the ALT at Production Park was launched at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival at the British Music Embassy on March 13 by Lee Brooks, CEO of Production Park; Rachel Nicholson from ALT; Andrea Shirk, president and CEO at Rock Lititz; and Carissa Massey, provost of PCA&D.

The partnership represents a global scale collaboration,

melding the strengths and expertise of Rock Lititz, PCA&D and the British higher education provider, which has helped students to develop live production creative, technical and professional skills since its founding in 2011.

Construction has begun on the ALT at Rock Lititz facility, which adjoins the existing large-scale rehearsal spaces, Studio 1 and Studio 2. The structure includes 22,400 square feet of classrooms, production space, digital labs and a students’ common area, with the option of expanding to the second and third floors to meet future needs.

A fourth rehearsal studio is also included in the structure, which will accommodate artists who perform at clubs, theaters and small amphitheater venues, and will provide PCA&D students with handson experiences in production technologies. The 9,300-

square-foot Studio B includes 7,000 square feet of open space for rehearsals, product demonstrations and technical training sessions.

Students will attend their general education classes at PCA&D’s downtown Lancaster facilities, then receive their immersive technical education on the Rock Lititz campus, earning a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in live experience design and production. Student recruitment has begun, and the Rock Lititz campus education center will be ready to welcome students for classes in the fall of 2024.

Recognizing the proximity to a number of live experience and event production companies in the region, PCA&D added the live experience design major in 2021 to prepare art and design students for opportunities in the growing industry.

Event to launch book focused on chronic illness

A book launch for “Invincible: Finding the Light Beyond the Darkness of Chronic Illness” will be held on Wednesday, April 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Our Town Brewery, 252 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

In “Invincible,” Anne Schober, Mollie Ayers, and 26 other people share their stories of having a chronic illness. The stories explore anger, denial, and grief through acceptance, triumphs, and joys.

The idea for the book was born after Schober posted on social media about living with rheumatoid arthritis. When she returned to the post a few days later, she found that it had garnered more than 500 comments and responses.

Among those who contacted Schober was Ayers, who also has an “invisible” illness and wanted to help Schober create an inspirational book on the topic. Schober and Ayers got in touch with others who had commented on Schober’s post and invited them to also share their stories in “Invincible.”

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the launch. Books will also be available for purchase at www.invin cible2023.com starting on Thursday, April 13.

For more information, email invinciblethebook@gmail.com, search for invincible_the_book on Instagram or Invincible the Book on Facebook, or, starting Tuesday, April 11, visit the aforementioned website.

Wellness Call program launched

Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time. Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic

brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.

With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of isolation is growing. The calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and offers peace of mind that someone cares and is actively checking on them.

Check-in calls make sure individuals are comfortable and completing daily living activities such as taking their medications and eating properly and also assesses the mood for safety in the home. Conversational calls offer a more in-depth conversation about family, hobbies, and current events and provide a sense of connection.

For more information, visit www.udservices.org.

Sacred Heart School’s Home and School Association hosted a Kids Only Yard Sale on March 3. Currently, about 30 local residents, ranging in age from their early 60s to their early 80s, are enrolled in the Lititz recCenter’s Rock Steady Boxing program.

“They come from all walks of life - doctors, accountants, schoolteachers, farmers, veterinarians,” said Johnson. “Parkinson’s is not reversible, and it gets worse over time. But one way to slow the progression of the disease is exercise, and one of the exercises that works best is boxing.” She added, “When you pair exercise with a regiment of medication, you’re going to knock it out of the park.”

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may start slowly and can include tremors, loss of balance, stiffness in muscles and slurred speech, and they can worsen over time. Because its cause is unknown, Parkinson’s disease can’t be prevented.

“The thing with Parkinson’s is that everyone is different,” said Johnson. “There are broad symptoms. There’s a saying that goes, ‘If you meet one person with Parkinson’s, you met one person with Parkinson’s.’ There’s really no known causes of (Parkinson’s), but there’s speculation about chemicals.”

There exists strength in numbers.

“If you’re somebody with Parkinson’s, there’s help and there’s a community here,” said Johnson. “We have built a family here. What that means is that there’s a group of people who know what you’re going through. It’s a tough disease to manage.”

Conestoga Herb Guild slates spring programs

For many in Lancaster County, gardening is an integral part of daily life. Every grower relies on certain tips and methods, from amateur gardeners to seasoned horticulturists who tend to plants for fun or rely on the soil for meals. The Conestoga Herb Guild provides a space for those with green thumbs to share tips with each other, trade supplies and hone their skills together.

“So many of our members grow their own herbs and cook with them. The guild focuses on utilizing and growing herbs in everyday life, as well as the health benefits that herbs provide for people,” said Mary Ann Steinhauer of the Conestoga Herb Guild.

The Conestoga Herb Guild hosts its programs and meetings at the Millersville VFW,

219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Although certain meetings are limited to members of the guild, several meetings are open to the public for a nominal fee. Each meeting revolves around a specific topic or activity, and many meetings feature a guest speaker. At the guild’s meeting on March 8, Steinhauer shared hacks that she has found to be effective for peeling, preserving and drying ginger root. Members often bring their own potted herbs to meetings so that others can take a piece to plant in their own gardens.

The guild will host its next

meeting on April 12. The topic for the meeting is “Creating Year-Round Interest

With Native Plants,” and the gathering will feature a presentation from guest speaker Adam Barkafski. Barkafski, a Master Gardener from Penn State, will discuss topics such as the importance of sustaining native herbs and how to select plants to extend the duration of time that a garden remains in bloom.

On May 10, the Conestoga Herb Guild will host its annual plant and seed exchange. During the program, members will bring a variety of harvested plants and herbs from their gardens to trade with others.

For this program, members will be considered the guest speakers and will share their favorite gardening techniques and advice pertaining to gardening safety and time efficiency. “Certain members are very experienced with specific herbs and have acquired little bits of knowledge from years of experience,” Steinhauer said. “Our main goal is to educate people on herbs you can grow or buy locally and using them in a way that it becomes part of their lives.”
