Flags Across Commonwealth Journeys Through Lancaster

SYour Next PA Adventure Starts Here

“I like to call this event ‘the most fun you’ll have planning your vacation,’” said Wendy Royal, event coordinator for the PA Family Travel Fair. “It’s free to attend. You can go around, get all kinds of informationvisitors’ guides, brochures and information about things only the locals know.”

The eighth annual PA Family Travel Fair will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. It will feature more than 50 vendors and exhibitors showcasing destinations and attractions from throughout the state.

In this particular instance, the passing, raising and lowering of that Scouting America flag represents the role that Scouting has played in the history of our nation.

couting America’s current flag offers a fresh, clean look that features a small image of an eagle and the colors of our country. It symbolizes the morals, commitment and tradition that Scouting America stands for.

“There are pride and meaning attached to all flags, and I think that’s true of the Scouting America flag,” said Logan Ginder, the marketing and membership coordinator of Scouting America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council. “It

“They are there to hand out free information. There’s no selling,” Royal said. “You can talk to the vendors, and they can answer any questions you have. Nobody knows their area or their attraction better than they do.”

Vendors will represent all corners of the state, providing ideas for summer getaways, day trips or longer vacations. Participants will include amusement parks; campgrounds; museums; and visitor bureaus, including the PA Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau.

“People love the outdoors in Pennsylvania. One of our new vendors is the Keystone Elk Country Alliance,” Royal said, adding that the Elk County-based group will have lots of information on the elk herds that populate the region. “They’ll have information on the best times to see the elk, and they’ll give people lots of ideas of things to do in the area.”

New this year, the PA Family Travel Fair will feature two grand prize giveaways.

“Here in Lancaster County, we see a lot of farms and a lot of farmers,” said Mark Lowery, the director of dealer development for CNH in North America. “Do people know our story? Certainly, people involved with agricultural production do. It goes back to, ‘Do you know where your food comes from?’ The broader population in Lancaster County might not know the story. But there’s been a long history of agricultural production here.”

It’s a story of innovation, mergers and acquisitions and small-town values playing well on a world stage. The roots of CNH can be traced

to a New Holland barn 131 years ago and a gentleman named Abe Zimmerman. Today, CNH, which is headquartered in Great Britain, operates 40 plants around the world; employs a total of 35,000 workers; and generates in excess of $20 billion in global revenue.

“CNH is a global brand, but a lot of people don’t know it was originally named after a town in eastern Lancaster County,” said Lowery. “We owe a lot to this local area and the innovations that made us a global brand.”

Road. But thanks to advances in technology, the operation looks a lot different than it did a century ago.

CNH’s New Holland location is a 350-acre campus consisting of five buildings - an administration building, a technical center focusing on research, development and design, a building for combine field testing, a technical training center and a home for CNH industrial capital. The local campus also operates a company farm at the site.

be more efficient?’ Farmers and ranchers have to continue to be more efficient. Our challenge is to use technology to make machines that are more efficient and make people’s lives easier. We help farmers be more profitable.”

After Zimmerman’s initiatives were incorporated in 1903 as New Holland Machine Company, four Lancaster businessmen bought the company in 1940 and partnered with Ed Nolt, the inventor of a small square baler.

The New Holland location of CNH employs about 900 workers.

“I think one of the keys to the evolution is that our pace never slows down for research and development,” said Lowery, “and one of those research and development centers is here in New Holland. It’s about a lot of talented people and having them in the right places. It’s about investing in sites like New Holland and bringing in people who are passionate about the products.”

“The key innovation that made the site important was the square baler,” said Lowery. “That propelled New Holland as a company. It had immediate success and it had a global effect.”

During the 1990s, the New Holland enterprise became affiliated with both Ford and Fiat. In 1999, the company that is now CNH was created.

“To have a homegrown company - with local people who have supported it - make a global impact is important to New Holland and Pennsylvania,” said Lowery. “For a lot of folks, from here and across Lancaster County, this company has been very important, and I think they want to see that success continue. Scouting America

represents Scouting and the state of Pennsylvania. I think it’s important just because we are Scouting America, and we’re one of the largest youth programs across the country. Scouting America has been present for a long time, and the mission hasn’t changed: for youths to become leaders and members of communities and for instilling ethics into our youths.”

By all accounts, Scouting America’s recent Flags Across the Commonwealth event celebrating this year’s 250th anniversary of the United States of America’s independence was a success. The local Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Scouting America, which serves youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, participated in the celebration during a 45-minute ceremony at the Lancaster County Courthouse, 50 N. Duke St., Lancaster, on Feb. 17.

“It was designed to unite the 67 counties in Pennsylvania,” said Ginder, “and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and Scouting’s commitment to our community. Community pride was the vibe, and it came at a time when it may be more important than ever to show community pride. There was also a little bit of national pride involved.”

During the ceremony, members of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council raised and lowered the Scouting America flag at the flagpole at the Lancaster County Courthouse. The celebration also included addresses and remarks from local dignitaries and government officials.

About 30 individuals attended the Flags Across the Commonwealth ceremony, including members of Scouting units Pack 93 of Lititz, Troop and Pack 76 from Quarryville and Troop 56 of Strasburg.

“It was definitely a special event for the 250th anniversary of our country,” said Ginder, a resident of Elizabethtown. “It’s not something we do every year. What it should mean to the Scouts is a sense of pride in their organization.”

As part of the Flags Across the Commonwealth program, the Scouting America flag’s journey began in Philadelphia on Feb. 8, the birthday of Scouting America, formerly known as Boy Scouts of America. After it was received in Lancaster and signed by participants at the local ceremony, the Scouting America flag was passed on to Pennsylvania Dutch Council members in Lebanon, who conducted a similar local service at the Lebanon County Courthouse on

Feb. 18.

“What we’re hoping for with the whole event across the state is to celebrate our enduring ideals of freedom and civic pride,” said Ginder. “We’re reaffirming values that continue to strengthen the United States. Hopefully, the takeaway from the Scouts is that it’s important for them to be a part of their communities. It’s a celebration throughout the state, so we hope they felt like they were part of something larger.”

In 1776, the United States was established when 13 original colonies broke from British rule. In 1910, Boy Scouts of America was formed in Washington, D.C.

“We provide Scouting programs to any and all youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Ginder. “We’re preparing youths to make ethical decisions through Scouting values.”

One of 20 in the state, the Pennsylvania Dutch Council was chartered in 1971. Currently, more than 2,000 youths - boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 17 - are involved with Scouting America in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

“They’re members of our community,” said Ginder. “They’re youths we strive to serve through

Attendees at the event can meet JJ in person, watch him create live, and experi -

our programs. They’re our Scouting family.”

“Scouting is alive and active in our communities,” he added. “Some people don’t realize we’re still out there. We haven’t fallen by the wayside. We’re still a very prominent program.”

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 245 Bloomfield Drive, Suite 212-218, Lititz, is funded through the generosity of donors, partners and business sponsors. The local council employs 11 workers, some of whom are part time, and benefits from contributions from 1,200 volunteers, many of whom work directly with Scouts.

“(Scouting is) constantly growing and changing,” said Ginder. “They’re adding more programs and more merit badges. Our facilities are being updated on a regular basis. They’re more effective programs for our youths. Our end goal is to provide quality programs to the youths in our council.”

“We have two big getaways this year, instead of one like we’ve had in the past,” Royal said. “Both are for families of four, and they include lodging, attractions, vouchers, gift cards for restaurants and more. One is from Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, and one is from Destination Gettysburg.”

The first 500 people in the door at the travel fair will receive a goodie bag, perfect for stuffing full of information picked up at vendor booths, Royal said, adding, “Your bag will be full by the end of the day.”

The event is truly for the whole family, with plenty of options for kids to have fun.

“We have a kids’ passport, which encourages kids to interact with the vendors,” Royal explained. “One lucky youngster will win eight all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park.”

Additionally, a balloon artist will entertain from 10 a.m. to noon, and airbrush tattoos will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m.

Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present a program at noon and will also have a booth set up all day for visitors to interact with some of the organization’s animals.

Mascots will also be on-site, including Echo the Bat from Lincoln

Caverns.

“She’s a lot of fun for the kids,” Royal said. “They really like meeting her.”

Along with vendors, the fair will feature a program from Sam Leamer, a local historian who will offer a presentation sponsored by Visit Lebanon Valley from 9 to 10:50 a.m.

“In honor of the 250th birthday of America, we wanted to bring somebody in who can talk about what life was like during Colonial times,” Royal said.

At 1:15 p.m., Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation president Marci Mowery will speak.

“She’s going to talk about opportunities for families in our state parks,” Royal said. “She was a schoolteacher, so she makes her presentations relatable for kids.”

Food will be available for purchase at a restaurant on-site at the expo center.

“It’s the kind of food you would expect to have at a county fair,” Royal said, noting that the restaurant is set up cafeteria style and is located right across the hall from the travel fair.

Royal has been organizing the PA Family Travel Fair since 2018, although she had been thinking about the idea for several years before that.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

“Over the years, I’ve always been astonished that we don’t know what’s going on in our own backyard,” she said. “There are so many cool things in our state that people just aren’t aware of.”

Tourism is big business in Pennsylvania. According to a 2024 economic impact study, the most recent study completed, visitors to the state spent $49.9 billion, equating to $144 million a day. Tourism also supports more than 500,000 jobs in the state and generates more than $5 billion in tax revenue to benefit the state.

More than 2,000 people attended last year’s PA Family Travel Fair, and Royal is excited to host it in a new venue this year, with lots of space and plenty of free parking.

“Kids love this event because there’s always something fun to do. Parents love it because it’s free and they can get lots of information,” she said. “It’s just a fun day and an opportunity to find out things they didn’t know about what there is to do in our state.”
