Being a waitress is a demanding and sometimes thankless job. It requires attention to detail, multitasking skills and patience. It also demands physical stamina, a can-do attitude and a nurturing mindset.

Serving is not an occupation for everyone, but Julia Daughtery pulls it off quite nicely.

A resident of Akron, Daugherty has been a waitress for eight years, the last 12 months of which have included serving at Knight and Day Diner, 3140 Lititz Pike, Lititz.

“I feel like it takes a certain type of person to be a server,” said Daugherty. “You have to be an outgoing person. Obviously, you want to be kind to your customers. But you’ve also got to have a backbone. You have to have a lot of patience. You have to have a nurturing character.”

Typically, Daugherty works 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Knight and Day Diner, serving both the breakfast and lunch crowds. She stressed that those who

“Order Up!”

frequent diners are generally a different clientele from the customers who go to bars or taverns.

“There’s definitely a difference in the people who come into diners,” said Daugherty. “My clientele is usually a lot of older folks who have lived here for years. It’s a lot of businessmen. Honestly, I get a lot of out-of-town people. I have regulars who come in to see me. I like creating relationships with people.”

“It’s hard on our bodies. Mentally, it can get tiring. Those trays are heavy. It’s definitely hard work.”

But serving is also a learned skill, and through experience comes wisdom. Daugherty works hard, but she also works smart.

“I feel like I’ve improved a lot from where I started,” said Daugherty. “I used to be pretty

shy. Sometimes it’s hard to be one person (when things get busy). I work better with chaos. I have patience and I’m flexible.” Daugherty said she relies heavily on gratuities to make financial ends meet.

“I feel like a lot of people do not understand how our paychecks work,” said Daugherty. “I’ve had tables that didn’t tip a penny. I’ve had tables not happy with the way f ood came out, and they blamed the messenger. I think a lot of it is people who don’t understand how much we do for them. But I appreciate what I do and I appreciate the people who come in. They help support my lifestyle.”

With not a lot of downtime, servers are always on their feet and constantly on the go. The wear and tear physically takes a toll on one’s being.

“It’s hard on our bodies,” said Daughterty. “Mentally, it can get tiring. Those trays are heavy. It’s definitely hard work. But it’s just the reality of the serving industry.”

Rotary ride to benefit Lifecycles

The sun on your back. The wind in your face. The open road at your feet.

There are few feelings of freedom that can compare to the one you experience while riding a bicycle. Now imagine the exhilaration that comes from doing it for a cause.

The community can experience just such an exhilaration by participating in the 19th annual Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Ride for the Community. It all goes down Saturday, June 3, at Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. There is a cost to

The average cost of the first year of training one dog is $3,000.

Breece noted that the UDS fundraiser is a little different from some other bingo events. “We allow people to pick their own prizes, and I think that kind of sets us apart,” she said, noting that the option started years ago. “So if somebody wins and they want that Kate Spade bag, they can get it,” she shared. “That has been well received.”

register, and early bird registration will begin on Saturday, April 15, but participants can also register at the park the day of the ride.

“The idea is to raise funds for the Rotary’s community partnership and raise awareness through a fun event,” said Steve Bell, the ride’s first-year coordinator. “We try to have a little fun and show an approachability. It’s a great way to get outside for a fun event as a community. People should come out because it’s fun, especially if you enjoy bike riding as a family.”

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Ride for the Community is not a race; instead, it features three courses of varying lengths. From

Neffsville into Lancaster County’s scenic and picturesque farm country, riders will traverse courses of 10, 20 or 40 miles.

“There are no prizes,” said Bell. “It’s a recreational ride. But most of the participants are serious riders. They come in riding gear, in spiked shoes, in fancy helmets and on nice bikes. It does have a pretty good following in the serious riding community.”

Typically, the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Ride for the Community raises about $10,000 to $15,000 for its charity of choice annually, and this year’s beneficiary is Lifecycles. Proceeds will go toward funding scholarships f or two local high school seniors involved with Lifecy-

cles, which stresses building young men and women of character through cycling experiences.

W hen it comes to determining the beneficiaries, Bell noted, Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has established strategic priorities. “We’re trying to identify worthy organizations that stress youth development and early education,” he said. “We’re not swinging at every pitch. We’re trying to pick and choose.”

In the past, the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Ride for the Community has attracted about 120 participants. After displaying steady growth early in its history, the Rotary ride’s participation has plateaued in recent years, but Bell would like to see a

Bingo

resurgence in the event’s growth.

“ We need to double that,” said Bell. “I’d love to see the ride outgrow the park. One hundred and twenty just isn’t that many people, with all the bike riders we have in the community.”

“I see a lot of riders on railto-trail,” he added. “I know people ride along the Susquehanna (River). It seems to me it’s a bike-friendly region. I think there are people who should be riding this ride. We get high reviews. We get a lot of return riders.”

Breece, administrative assistant Jennifer King, and other staff members, have been gathering prizes for the event, focusing on experiences. Breece described a tasting tour at Allegro Winery that includes cheese, crackers, a souvenir glass, and a free bottle of wine. “We have a 50minute traditional massage and lunch in the Oasis at the Spa at The Hotel Hershey,” said Breece. Another prize will be an experience for six at The Brewery of Hershey, which includes a guided tour of production operations and concludes with a tasting of products paired with local cheese, chocolates, and dried fruit. Four tickets to Hershey Gardens will be among the prizes, and organizers are working on putting together an overnight trip to Baltimore with National Aquarium tickets. Breece also hopes to have a Gettysburg excursion to give away, and King noted that Longwood Gardens tickets and sports memorabilia items associated with the 76ers, Flyers, Steelers, and

Eagles are being gathered. Door prizes, special games with cash prizes, and other giveaways will be included at the event.

UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. Charlie, the black Labrador puppy that posed cooperatively with bingo cards for this article, began his training at 11 weeks. “Normally puppies start our program at 8 weeks,” said Breece, who noted that in spite of starting a little late, the pup is doing well. “(Charlie) has been a shining star,” she stated.

Kinetic expands fiber broadband service area

BREAKOUT MINISTRIES: SeniorPastors

Nearly 2,200 homes, businesses and schools in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties are now eligible for fiber broadband, high-speed internet provided by Kinetic.

The service was announced during an event held at the Caernarvon Township Municipal Building in Morgantown, which also included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for fiber broadband. Participants included Pennsylvania Telephone Association president Steven Samara; Lydia Messner, an aide for state Sen. Scott Margin; Kinetic state public affairs vice president Jeanne

Shearer; Berks County community and economic development director Pamela Shupp-Menet; Twin Valley School District superintendent Patrick Winters; Kinetic state operations president Susan Schraibman; and Caernarvon Township supervisor Paul Whiteman Sr.

About 900 customers in Berks County, 750 in Chester County and 550 in Lancaster County are now eligible for fiber. That total of nearly 2,200 customers will likely increase to more than 3,100 by this time next year, Kinetic estimates. Kinetic’s fiber-optic broadband lets users upload and download at up to 1 gigabit per second, or 1,000 megabits a second, providing what is known as “next-generation access.”

The southeastern Pennsylvania fiber project is part of a $2 billion multiyear capital investment strategy to dramatically expand gigabit internet service across Kinetic’s 18state footprint.

Customers may visit www.gokinetic.com to find out if they are eligible for a speed upgrade and how Kinetic can help meet their home or business needs. They may also visit the Kinetic Connection Center retail store at 130 E. Main St. in Ephrata or call the store at 717-738-7100.
