Local history isn’t only thing to be explored at Mennonite Life
BY JEFF FALKOver the last 300 years, Mennonites have evolved and diversified. But one of the constants that has remained is how their lifestyles reflect their beliefs.
Mennonite Life seeks to honor those beliefs, tell the story of the Mennonite sect in Lancaster
“We just want to be this place that is welcoming to people who want to learn who Mennonites are.”
County and share that lifestyle with others. It accomplishes that mission through archives, historical displays and welcoming arms.
“I think (‘Mennonite’ is) a little bit of both, theology and lifestyle,” said Abby Hershberger, Mennonite Life’s storyteller. “It depends on the Mennonite. (‘Mennonite’) can be a big umbrella for a lot of people. Mennonite life can be characterized by non-violence, non-conformity, a life based on the life of Jesus Christ and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Non-conformity means rejecting the status quo in different ways. It could be stepping away from certain technology. I’m a pacifist.

I oppose violence in the world.”
Formerly the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, the story of Mennonite Life is sprawled across two campuses, one at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, and the 1719 Herr House at 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The Mennonite Life campus features a visitor’s center, a collections building and a Biblical Tabernacle experience, while the historic 1719 Herr House is surrounded by the
Lancaster Longhouse, a blacksmith shop, a visitor’s center, a pasture and horse barn and an orchard.
“It’s a big organization,” said Hershberger. “But we have a common goal to tell Mennonite life stories. We want people to know that we’re here and that Mennonite history is exciting. Mennonite Life is open to anyone who cares about Lancaster County history and Mennonite and Amish history.”
“It’s important to know how interconnected we all are,” she added. “We also care about preserving historical artifacts from the past. There’s value in preserving the past.”
Mennonite Life offers tours, opportunities for field trips, educational programs, events and an extensive archives and library. Some 45,000 people from Lancaster County and beyond visit Mennonite Life each year.
“The visitor’s center gets a big

Over the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication,

Volunteers needed for cleanup event
The Manheim Township Sustainability Advisory Committee is seeking volunteers for its spring litter cleanup event on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held rain or shine.
The committee is hosting the roadway and stream cleanup at its Adopt-AHighway location along Oregon Pike near Oregon Dairy. Volunteers will tidy up an impaired stream that
is part of the Lower Conestoga River Watershed as well as the stretch of road from Compost Park to Creek Road.
Those looking to join the cleanup event should meet at the underpass where Oregon Pike, Jake Landis Road, and Route 222 intersect. Participants should park as far onto the shoulder as possible.
Volunteers of all ages are encouraged and welcome

to participate, but minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Because much of the cleanup is along Oregon Pike, any chaperoned volunteers under the age of 13 will be assigned to the stream portion of the cleanup.

Participants should also anticipate crawling through heavy brush and possible contact with ticks and poison ivy, as well as getting wet and muddy. Attendees should bring a water bottle. the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do
this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.

“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things hap -
pening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer.
“We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www. townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him,
but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”

range of groups,” said Hershberger. “It’s a lot of tourists. It’s a lot of bus groups. We just want to be this place that is welcoming to people who want to learn who Mennonites are.”
It’s difficult to document how many Mennonites live locally, what percentage of Lancaster County’s total population they comprise and if indeed they are concentrated in the eastern and southern parts of the county. But there is no denying that Mennonites played a key role in the founding and development of Lancaster County.
“In 2021, the (organization’s) name was changed to Mennonite Life to simplify it and make it more welcoming to the community,” said Hershberger. “The Lancaster Mennonite

Historical Society was founded in 1958. There was a pastor, Ira Landis, who came into possession of church documents, and (the founders) wanted to preserve local history. We still have a huge archive of things here. Mennonite Life is always going to be interested in preserving history.”
“For me personally, I just think it’s good to know who our neighbors are,” added Hershberger. “Building bridges over big gaps and small gaps is important. It’s really important for me to know how Mennonite history is related to other people. It’s just good not to be afraid of differences.”

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe ninth annual Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event will be held on Friday through Sunday, April 5 through 7, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road. During designated shifts on each day of the event, members of the community will gather to pack thousands of meals to help combat food insecurity around the globe.
Children from kindergarten to 12th grade and adult volunteers may sign up for a specific two-hour shift to pack food items. Packing shifts vary on each day, and student-to-adult ratios have been assigned to groups of volunteers to ensure the safety and efficiency of the event. Tasks that may be completed sitting down will be available as needed.
Individuals who register for a shift are encouraged to make a minimum financial donation to FMSC. Each minimum donation will cover the cost of more than 200 meals, which is the average amount of food one volunteer packs during a shift. In addition to the financial donation, FMSC invites participants to bring a nonperishable food item on the day of their chosen shift. Requested food donations include peanut butter, rice, pasta and low-sugar breakfast cereal, and FMSC will distribute all donations to the Lancaster County Food Hub in Lancaster city.
Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson Lora Magnus Wenger first learned about the organization during a mission trip she took to Haiti in 2013. Wenger was volunteering with nonprofit organization Mission of Hope, which partnered with Haitian orphanages, schools and nonprofits to distribute FMSC meals to roughly 50,000 children per day. Upon returning to the United States, Wenger said she was inspired to research the organization, and she signed up for an

FMSC MobilePack event in New Jersey. “I was very impressed by the organization and its goals and methods,” Wenger added. “I decided that our community could do this too; I came back and talked to my church about it, and we hosted our first event the following year.”
Since the first MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church, volunteers have packed and paid for more than 2 million meals for communities around the globe. Although the goal of the event has remained the same more than a decade later, certain changes have been made over the years. Due to inflation, the cost of each meal has slightly increased, and hand-washing stations have been made available during shifts in recent years to meet government safety regulations. A few years ago, FMSC began accepting donations for the Lancaster County Food Hub to battle food insecurity in the local community in addition to efforts in other countries.
“Living in the United States, we are incredibly blessed,” Wenger said. “I think it is important for us to not only recognize how blessed we are but to be willing to share our blessings with others. It is also a good opportunity for young people down to age 5 to be involved in sharing and caring for others.”
