YWCA Plans 21st Running Of The Race Against Racism

“(The Race Against Racism) is another way to forward the mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” explained Bob Hebert, Lancaster YWCA director of communications and community engagement. “It’s a fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute four times per year.”

This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. Humanity Fest, which will feature face painting, food, and displays by local nonprofit organizations, will be held alongside the 2019 Race Against Racism, sponsored by the Lancaster YWCA, on April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, Lancaster, at 9 a.m.

W hen the women of the Lititz Springs Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star inherited the Lititz Lionesses Club’s spring fashion show, the members were ready to start organizing the event. “We love to dress up, and we’ve held fashion shows before,” said Lititz Springs Chapter member and fashion show organizer Ann Watson.

The club invites area women to the first Fling Into Spring Fashion Show, which will be held in the garden room of the Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The Master Gardener organizers of the 27th annual Shirley R. Wagner Garden Symposium have once again planned an event to appeal to anyone with an interest in gardening.

Speakers during the event will talk about trends in gardening, weeds, woodland wildflowers, native bees, and plants for pollinators. An update on the spotted lanternfly infestation will also be offered.

“For a gardener, this is the place to be,” said symposium co-chair Brenda Walker.

The show began as book writer John-Michael Tebelak’s thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970. It reached OffBroadway in 1971 and was made into a major motion picture starring Victor Garber in 1973. In 2012, a Broadway revival showcased contemporary references and new musical arrangements, in which Prima’s production is based.

The Prima show will feature an intimate, in-the-round seating arrangement. The cast includes Tayler Harris as Jesus and Christian Harward as John the Baptist/Judas, as well as Ashley Coia, Monica DePaul, Ellie Faggion, Joshua Kramer Keefer, Kayla Klase, Miley LoBalsamo, Donté Wilder, and Wendy Yellin.

J. Scott Lapp is the production’s director, with Chelsea Lapp as choreographer and Scott Williams as music director.

The All Things Home Fair will have a new home this year. The annual event, which was held at Brightside Opportunities Center in previous years, will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Rec Center, 525 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, and its next-door neighbor, Price Elementary School, 615 Fairview Ave. The host sites are anchor organizations in SoWe, the southwest quadrant of Lancaster city bordered by Fairview Avenue and Prince, King, Manor, and Seymour streets. SoWe is a larger revitalization effort driven by Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and neighborhood residents, explained SoWe neighborhood director Jake Thorsen. Residents of the southwest quadrant are especially encouraged to attend the home fair, but everyone else in Lancaster County is welcome to attend.

The fair is organized by LHOP and SoWe and will aim to provide helpful information for renters, homeowners, and buyers and sellers of property. Mortgage lenders, real estate agents, home inspectors, attorneys, and insurance agents will be among the exhibitors. Title companies and pest control agencies, along with the City of Lancaster, Pet Pantry of Lancaster

County, and Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat, will also be represented.

“We (will encourage) people to talk to each of the vendors and enter door prize drawings,” said LHOP director of development Laurie Moir. Among the prizes is a family pass to Conestoga Pines Pool.

“There are lots of giveaways just for coming,” added event co-chair Carole Kirchner. She noted that while giveaways are fun, the real prize is the knowledge folks will glean at the event.

“My daughter came two years ago, and afterward, she said, ‘What a really neat event,’” Kirchner related. “You will walk away with something you didn’t know.”

The event is open to everyone - not just first-time homebuyers - and children will be welcome. There will be activities for the youngsters, including the opportunity to decorate Easter bags and go on a scavenger hunt. There is also a playground behind the rec center and near the school for outdoor play.

Four seminars will be offered at the fair. Although attendance will be free of charge, due to space limitations, folks who plan to attend any of the seminars should register by searching for “All Things Home Fair” at www.eventbrite.com.

Landis Homes Celebrates Student Artwork Each year since 1995, Landis Homes has selected a piece of artwork from the Lancaster Mennonite High School Fine Arts Festival to become part of a permanent art collection on the retirement community campus. In return for the work, Landis Homes makes contributions to the Lancaster Mennonite School art department and to the student to help further their education.

To mark the 25th year milestone, a special reception will be held on Sunday, March 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the new Crossings Gallery at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The public is invited to view all 25 works of art which will

be on display. The winners from the previous years, many of whom are now in their 30s and 40s, have been invited to attend this event. Current and former teachers and others community members may attend, as well.

Lecture To Focus On Women Of The White House LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a presentation about “Surrogate First Ladies” on Thursday, April 4, in Ryder Hall. Beginning with Martha Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, there have been a handful of women who have performed the duties of White House hostess though they were not married to the president. These women are sometimes acknowledged as “surrogate First Ladies,” but they are often not considered official First Ladies, though many served important roles in presidential administrations.

Included in the lineup of surrogate First Ladies is Harriet Lane, niece of President James Buchanan, who is considered an “official” First Lady. Lane acted as Buchanan’s hostess and was a highly visible public figure. Other non-spousal relatives who took on the duties of the First Lady include Emily Donelson and Sarah Yorke Jackson, Andrew Jackson’s niece and daughter-in-law, respectively; Angelica Singleton Van Buren, Martin Van Buren’s daughter-in-law; and Rose Elizabeth Cleveland, Grover Cleveland’s sister.

Siyu Wang received the 2019 Art Student Scholarship Award. Wang, a Lancaster Mennonite High School senior, was chosen for her intricate depiction of a squirrel in colored pencil.

Wang is from Beijing, China, where she lives with her family, including her parents and a younger brother. Wang, who lives with the Steve Cornell family during the school year, is completing her third year at Lancaster Mennonite School and plans to graduate in May.

IU 13 Event Will Offer Variety Of Topics

Reidenouer “We had 500 attendees last year and are hoping that number is higher this year,” said program support liaison Linda Swisher, speaking about the 26th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Education Conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster.

In order for the conference to serve a broad range of people, an equally wideranging list of topics will be addressed in morning and afternoon breakout sessions.

A sampling of subjects includes drug and alcohol prevention and current drug trends; anger management for adolescents; mindfulness; eating disorders, specifically anorexia; how to help bereaved students; special education law; diversity; helping students with anxiety; planning for retirement; and effectively managing language barriers. There will also be classes on literacy, behavior, math, autism, technology, and preschool/Early Intervention.

“Two sessions that we are very excited

about this year are the sessions on Phenomenal Science Instruction and Stopping the Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have offered a STEM-related topic, and the Stop the Bleed session is a national program that instructs participants on how to control bleeding in an emergency situation.”

All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together …

We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

“When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through innovative approaches to teaching. IU 13 welcomes everyone who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’”

The keynote speaker for the conference

will be Jeremy Anderson, who has become an author, businessman, and motivational speaker after recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Anderson struggled to succeed in school, but he now holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his address, “Diamond in the Rough,” Anderson will reveal how challenges can be used to develop endurance and previously concealed abilities within educators and students. He will also focus on establishing an environment in which student rapport and academic success can be cultivated, using his story to tie in strategies to engage atrisk students. During the morning breakout sessions, Anderson will lead a discussion on building allies in the classroom in order to help troubled students recognize their full potential.

The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be available. Attendees may visit sponsors’ tables and enter to win prizes from local businesses. Lunch will be provided and, along with breakfast, is included in the cost of attendance.

Act 48 hours will be awarded for the conference.

Founded in the fall of 1976, the Keystone Brass Quintet has performed programs for churches, colleges, schools, and numerous summer music series in the tri-state area.

Two Communities to serve you.

Hempfield United Methodist Church (HUMC), 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will partner with Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning (GOAL) to host a F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives Workshop about addiction titled “Why Addiction Is a Family Disease.”

The upcoming three-part workshop, which is open to the public, will be held at HUMC from 6 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, April 12, May 10, and June 14. The free workshop is geared toward parents, teachers, clergy, church members and other persons interested in learning about addictions.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to attend all three sessions.

The April 12 session, titled “The Heart and the Sorrow of Addiction,” will include a discussion by a panel of those impacted by a loved one’s struggle with addiction. Additionally, professional presenters will include counselor Lori Casanova, the Rev. Joel Jakubowski, and author Dr. Mary T. Webb.

The May 10 session is titled “What Is Addiction?” It will feature presenters Dr. Stephen Naylor; Jodi Holland from Gate House Behavioral Health Services, an addiction treatment center; and Steven Schedler from the Naaman Center, a substance abuse intensive outpatient center.

The June 14 session is titled “What Can We Do?” It will be a guided discussion on how to help a person dealing with addiction to achieve optimal healing, with a special emphasis on enabling and its effects. Presenters Paige Harker, executive director of the GOAL Project, and Webb will lead the discussion.

GOAL is an Anglican mission agency providing pastoral care seminars for clergy and Christian recovery from addiction training in the U.S. and internationally. GOAL’s F.A.I.T.H Initiatives program seeks to mobilize and empower local congregations to develop

Race Against Racism from pg 1 Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee.

The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race.

Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert.

“The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.”

The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students.

The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the

country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training.

Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg.

The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners.

Walkers are welcome.

Book Discussion Group To Meet Exploring, Growing Together, a book discussion group at Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC), 201 E. Market St., Lititz, will continue its 2018-19 series, which aims to help people explore beliefs in a safe discussion environment.

Watson noted that the clothing, which will be provided by Ruthie’s, a women’s boutique that has locations in Ronks and Bird-in-Hand, will appeal to a range of tastes. “We love to have all ages because the fashions are appropriate for all ages,” said Watson, who added that a full range of sizes will be available as well.

The club is working with local business owner Ruthie Carpenter to organize the show, and Watson pointed out that Carpenter has lined up on-trend spring fashions for the event. “(There will be) a lot of teal and bright colors and prints,” said Watson. “(The collection) has wonderful flowing tops that are appropriate for all body shapes.”

More than eight models will appear in the fashion show. Models will include members of Eastern Star and their daughters and granddaughters. Among them will be Brenda Long, Hanna Mckennon, Moira Donegan, Linda Shoemaker, Marissa Greathouse, Kendall Hunsicker, Dorothy J. Becker-Drumheller, and Helen Row. In addition, themed baskets and door prizes will be available for giveaways as part of the event.

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest international fraternal organization open to men and women. The Lititz Springs Chapter, which draws more than 100 members from Ephrata, Lititz, and Manheim, meets in the Manheim Masonic Lodge on the fourth Thursday of each month. “We have a lot of fun,” said Watson. “We have parties and state events.”

Watson also noted that organization members hold a variety of fundraisers,

including a food stand at the Manheim Farm Show Parade and a community garage sale.

Symposium attendees may visit the vendors during the breaks between sessions. Jourdan Cole of the Garden Media Group will kick things off by reviewing eight recent garden trends that encourage a love of nature.

“People have been saying they’re looking forward to this (session),” List said.

Recently retired horticulture extension educator and Master Gardener Annette MaCoy will talk all about weeds and how to control them. List praised MaCoy’s knowledge base and noted that she has trained many of the Master Gardeners in Lancaster County.

and their ecological benefit. “We don’t often use them (in planned gardens) because they’re not around very long, but they add a taste of spring when we’re yearning for it,” List said.

Kelly Gill is a pollinator conservation specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and a partner biologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. She will talk about native bees and their habitat needs, a topic that she frequently discusses during her role helping farmers, landowners, and others implement Farm Bill practices to conserve pollinators and other beneficial insects. In a second session, Gill will talk about designing and managing pollinator-friendly landscapes.

“Even a pot on a patio will help pollinators,” said Master Gardener and symposium committee member Dyan Eisenberger. “They can act as way stations for insects and birds during migration.”

Each spring, the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) participates in a one-day local tour, singing at schools, retirement homes, and community centers. The singers learn about and build connections with the local community as well as share music with those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to hear MCCL. On Friday, March 29, the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir, both consisting of students in grades six through 12, will sing at the Water Street Mission, Calvary Homes, and Faith Mennonite High School.

On Friday, April 5, the Carol Choir, consisting of children in grades two through five, will share music at Fairmount Homes Retirement Community, Hinkletown Mennonite School, and Ten Thousand Villages. The choirs are directed by Sarah

Wingard and Rosemary Blessing.

The repertoire of each choir within MCCL reflects the musical diversity of the church around the world and through time.

In addition to the choirs that will go on local tour days, MCCL offers a Men’s Ensemble directed by Jonathan Shoff; Prelude Music, for children in kindergarten through grade one, led by Shoff, interim director; and Choristers, for children in grades two through seven, directed by Kit Baker.

The mission of MCCL is training children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The choirs and the Prelude Music and Choristers programs are open to children from all church backgrounds and are sponsored
