It was Oscar Wilde who said,
“Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” But he may not have been referring to the performing arts, which not only imitates life, but also teaches life lessons.
A group of students is currently getting a pretty good glimpse of life beyond the walls of Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) through their involvement in the production of “Matilda.”
“I hope they’re learning aspects of teamwork,” said Michael Adams, the co-director and producer of LCHS’ “Matilda,” of his cast and crew. “We are one production, and every person
matters. I preach to them, ‘When (you aren’t) there, someone else is doing your job and their own.’ It’s a whole production that they are a part of.”
LCHS’ fine and performing arts department will present its interpretation of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 3; Friday, April 4; and Saturday, April 5, at the school’s Old Gym Auditorium, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster. Tickets are available at www .cur8.com/projects/39899 or at the auditorium’s box office the nights of the shows.
The cast and crew will also present “Matilda” to a group of 300 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from five Lancaster County
Catholic schools that serve as feeders for LCHS on Tuesday, April 1. That performance will serve as the production’s final dress rehearsal.
“I’m a music guy through and through,” said Adams. “My passion is for the vocal part of it and seeing the students develop their characters, while their own personal character develops. We do try to let them make it their own. Seeing the final production on stage is one of the best feelings, because it’s all consuming.”
There are 66 LCHS students involved with the production of “Matilda,” including 18 seniors, seven juniors, 16 sophomores and 25 freshmen. From that group, 29 are members of the

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum has a long and storied history of promoting a long and storied history. It’s an unwavering commitment to the local community that warrants a celebration.
For an entire century, Landis Valley has been teaching about and preserving a time nearly 300 years ago.
“Henry and George Landis were brothers who were into collecting,” said Terry Kreider, manager of the Landis Valley Associates. “In adulthood, they

SkillsUSA is not “just a club” to members of the Willow Street chapter.
Several students who attend the Willow Street campus of Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) believe the organization offers a chance to be part of something special.
“SkillsUSA is the No. 1 workforce development organization
for students,” explained Airamis Condé, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, who is one of the chapter’s five officers. “(It) empowers students to become skilled professionals and career-ready leaders. SkillsUSA encourages students to step out of their comfort zone, have fun, and be themselves.”
Natalie Yang, a medical assistant student from Garden Spot, said the group has organized 25 Thanksgiving dinners for
The staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) will present the fourth annual Spring Swing Charity Scramble Golf Tournament on Friday, May 16, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon.
The year’s event will benefit Beards for Brothers
(BFB), an organization that is committed to raising funds to support first responders and their families who have a family member fighting cancer. There will be a cost to play per foursome. The fee includes golf, use of a cart, lunch, beverages, giveaways and prizes. The event will
also include a silent auction.
To register a team or to learn how to sponsor the event, visit www.hartzpt. com/spring-swing. Those who register by Monday, March 31, will receive a discount.
Individuals are asked to follow BFB on Facebook and Instagram for additional
updates, including registration times, for this event and other upcoming events. Those with questions can message BFB on Facebook or contact event directors Kevin Sisbarroor or Daulton Rutter at ksisbarro@hartzpt.com or drutter@hartzpt.com, respectively.

however, minors under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the cleanup’s location along Oregon Pike, chaperoned volunteers under age 13 will be assigned to the stream portion of the event.
The event will be a roadway and stream cleanup at the Manheim Township Sustainability Advisory Committee’s Adopt-A-Highway site along Oregon Pike near Oregon Dairy. Volunteers will help clean an impaired stream within the Lower Conestoga River watershed, as well as the section of road extending from Compost Park to Creek Road.
During last year’s spring cleanup event, volunteers collected more than 700 pounds of debris in 30 bags along Oregon Pike.
Anyone interested in joining the cleanup event should gather at the underpass where Oregon Pike, Jake Landis Road, and Route 222 intersect. Participants are asked to park as far onto the shoulder as possible.
Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate;
To volunteer for the cleanup or for more details, contact Ryan Dodson at ryandodson17601@gmail. com or call 717-475-0195. Participants should be aware that they will need to navigate wet, uneven ground through dense vegetation, as well as walk along the wide shoulder of Oregon Pike. Wearing closed-toed shoes and long pants is strongly advised. Volunteers should be prepared to crawl through thick brush, encounter ticks and poison ivy, and get wet and muddy. Be sure to bring a water bottle. Gloves, garbage bags, and safety vests will be provided.

families in need, provided a holiday meal for LCCTC students and faculty, and sponsored a hat and mitten tree with the clothes collected donated to Water Street Mission.
“SkillsUSA is important because as a student who has been in multiple clubs before, SkillsUSA has been the most beneficial for me,” said Ky Logan, who is a veterinary assistant student from Elizabethtown. “It has helped me grow socially and build connections with others who have fields of studies in different areas or the same interests as me.
There are also many different opportunities for community service, which some schools require. I think it’s beneficial SkillsUSA provides that opportunity for students to be able to get those hours that they may need to meet graduation requirements.”
Ky added, “It’s not just a club for me. The competitions and community service projects we do are important.”
Sara Rager, an aspiring patient care technician from Manheim Township, stated that being part of SkillsUSA has helped her improve her grades.
“We get to come together and form something special,” said Sara. “That’s why I feel like it’s so much more than a club, as Ky said. It has helped each individual, especially me, with thriving and striving for what I want.”
One of 21 Willow Street campus students who competed in the SkillsUSA district competition, Sara finished first in extempo -
raneous speaking to earn a trip to the state competition, which will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 2 to 4, in Hershey.
At districts, Sara was given five minutes to do research for her speech with the topic, “How has responsibility made you grow in SkillsUSA, and why is it important?”
“I told them about my experiences in SkillsUSA and how I work with a team,” Sara said. “In the past, I’ve had a hard time working with a team, and now, I’ve worked with a lot of intelligent minds and brilliant people, and we can come up with a lot of great ideas.”
Grace Wagner, a dental assistant student from Solanco, also finished first at districts and will compete at states.
“I’m super excited, looking forward to my state competition,” said Grace. “I’ve been working very hard, studying hard recently for that, and I’m excited to see what the outcome will be.”
Grace said she joined SkillsUSA because of the advice of her instructor Rachel Sprecher. “I had been having thoughts about doing it before, but I wasn’t too confident,” said Grace, who is considering returning to LCCTC for postsecondary education.
“I decided to listen to her advice, and I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I’m very grateful that she encouraged me to do that because I feel like this (club) is going to lead to very large opportunities for my education and my
future.”
Britney Valentin, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, attended the state delegate conference on March 5 at the Dauphin County Technical School. It’s a Central Region workshop to prepare delegates for the procedures and events at the April state competition in Hershey.
“Being a delegate means to have an important role in helping shape the future of SkillsUSA,” said Britney.
Mason Houser, a diesel equipment and technology student from Lampeter-Strasburg, competed in districts. “I wanted to test my skills, how quickly
The Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a drive-through pork barbecue dinner to benefit the ministries of the Alpha and Omega Community Center. The fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
Catered by Peters’ Barbecue, the takeout meal will include a pulled pork sandwich with barbecue sauce, a homemade roll, a baked potato, and applesauce.
Drinks are not included. There is a fee, and additional donations are welcome. Last year’s event raised more than $2,000 for the community center. Preorders are strongly encouraged, as a limited number of meals will be available for purchase on the day of the event. To preorder, contact Carolyn Fitzkee no later than Wednesday, April 2, at dcfitzkee@gmail.com or 717-682-1762. The Alpha and Omega
Community Center is affiliated with the Alpha and Omega Church of the Brethren and provides education and social services to empower the Latino community of Lancaster. Led by executive director Joel Peña, the center offers a food bank, computers for refugees, Spanish language counseling, and English instruction. The center is located at 708 Wabank St., Lancaster. I can do tasks, and to see how much I actually know,” said Mason. “I chose the CTC for the diesel program. My uncle worked in diesel as a semi-truck operator, and I grew up on that (and thought), ‘Hey, I want to do this.’”
realized the culture they grew up in was disappearing. They started getting reputations, and people started showing up on their doorstep, so they figured they needed to open an official museum.”
Located at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a 30-minute ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, April 4, at noon. The ceremony is designed for government officials, local dignitaries, members of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and the museum’s membership base, but the public is also welcome to attend.
The Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which receives financial support from the Landis Valley Associates.
“Everyone’s going to come together,” said Kreider. “It’s just like a big event to kick off that (100th) year. We have a couple events throughout
the year. They’re similar in that they celebrate an aspect of Pennsylvania German culture.”
Landis Valley’s yearlong celebration of its 100th anniversary will continue on Mother’s Day weekendFriday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10 - with its annual Herb and Garden Faire. On Thursday, June 19, Landis Valley will conduct its inaugural Juneteenth Celebration, followed by Civil War Days on Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20; Harvest Days on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12; and the annual Christmas Bonfire on Friday, Dec. 12.
“Having a connection to the past is very important,” said Kreider. “Understanding where we came from in the past informs us of who we are today.”
After the Landis brothers established Landis Valley as a public museum in 1925, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission took over operations of the village and farm property in 1952.
“When the brothers first started it, it was a preservation mission,” said Kreider.

cast, 25 are crew members and 12 are musicians.
The cast features Allegra Essis as Matilda Wormwood, Drew Olsen as Agatha Trunchbull, Sophia Romero as Miss Honey, Tre Hockley as Mr. Wormwood, Payton Stetler as Mrs. Wormwood, Patrick Fertal as Michael Wormwood, Charlie Lorenz as The Escapologist, Piper Davidson as Mrs. Phelps, Charlie Lorenz as Rudolpho and Ava Ritcher as Lavender.
“(The students) are a
collection of personalities and abilities,” said Adams. “We have a spot for anyone who wants to be involved. We don’t turn anyone away. We’re welcoming and accepting of every student who wants to participate. We’re looking for our best performers to be on stage. No performance is given, and we’re making sure we’re putting on the best show that we possibly can.”
“Playing Miss Trunchbull has certainly brought me out of my comfort zone in
“They did not marry. They did not have children. But they wanted to see it preserved. One brother died in 1953, and one died in 1954.”
Over the years, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum has become a destination for visitors from the mid-Atlantic region and Lancaster County residents interested in local history. More than 35,000 individuals visit Landis Valley each year.
“I’m going to say it’s mostly local people (who visit),” said Kreider. “It’s for the curious. It’s for people who want to actively learn about local history. The Amish are part of the story, but not the whole story.”
Landis Valley, which counts more than 175,000 historic items - some dating as far back as the 1740s - as part of its collection and exhibits, is a living, breathing museum, complete with re-enactors, demonstrators, horses, sheep and chickens. The 100-acre property is home to 20 historically correct buildings in an interpretive area.
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum employs
part-time, seasonal and contract workers, but it relies heavily on the support of volunteers. Landis Valley, which also hosts events like weddings, parties, reunions and business meetings, is open Thursdays to Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. year-round.
There are admission fees involved with touring the farm and museum.
“I love the demonstrations in the buildings,” said Kreider. “I love watching (the demonstrators) create what they do. I love our animals. They’re like the living parts of the museum. The neat thing about a living history museum is that you’re actually seeing it and hearing it.”
“We’re here for the community,” added Kreider. “We provide education for school groups. We have many aspects, and we’re preserving the history of the community in a way that’s inspiring and interactive.”

a character, but it has been so much fun to play,” said Drew, a senior. “Being the ‘villain’ in a story is something I didn’t think I would do, as I only started doing theater two years ago. Playing this part, however, has helped to push me out of my comfort zone and learn to think more creatively.”
Planning for LCHS’ production of “Matilda” began during the summer months of 2024, and rehearsals for the show commenced in the beginning of Janu -
ary. All told, the students have spent more than 160 hours learning, practicing and fine-tuning in anticipation of their public performances.
“We have a high-quality drama department and music department,” said Adams. “When I see the seniors come in as freshmen and see their progress, it’s gratifying. These kids grow up from each production to production and pass the baton. It’s a very familial feeling.”

It is a historic setting to meet merit badge requirements.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will hold on-site railroading merit badge workshops from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, March 29, April 26, May 17, June 21 and Aug. 23. For more information or to register, go to www. rrmuseumpa.org and click on “Events” under the “Events & Programs” tab.
The workshops are for boys and girls ages 11 through 17 who are involved in Scouting, so they can learn by working with historic artifacts and model trains. Scouts who complete the program earn an official railroading merit badge.
“We are told (the railroading merit badge) is a specialized merit badge to offer, so I think that adds to the draw this museum has,” said museum educator Jesse Shetrom. “It’s just a cool venue for it.” Museum educator Juliette O’Connor said the on-site workshops regularly attract Scouts from as far away as New York. One family took a flight from Florida just to attend the workshop, then immediately boarded another for a trip back home, she said.
The workshops are made up of four activities, two in the morning and
two more in the afternoon. Scouts are able to study G-scale model railroad demonstrations.
G-scale is a track gauge for model railways that is large and durable so that it can be used outdoors.
“That’s one of the unique things we have here,” Shetrom said. Attendees then study equipment at the museum. In the afternoon, Scouts spend time in a classroom and then study railway safety. Shetrom and O’Connor are both trained through Operation Lifesaver in order to be instructors of the safety program.
The museum also has a Solari board, or “clickety-clack sign,” as O’Connor describes it. A Solari board lists arrivals and departures, showing numbers and letters on rotating flaps. The museum’s Solari board no longer moves, but there is a virtual representation of a Solari board.
“We have unique ways that we can fulfill this merit badge,” O’Connor said. “We do have a worldclass collection here that the Scouts get to view behind-the-scenes equipment tours of.”
Shetrom added, “We have all the freight cars and passenger cars kids need for the requirements. They can do everything in one day, and it’s hands-on. They get to interact with all this history as opposed to it being described in a
Zion’s Angels Relay For Life team will hold a luncheon and fashion show fundraiser on Saturday, March 29, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The event will take place at East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.
The luncheon will be catered by SEI Catering Inc. in Lititz, and the fashions will be from Touch of Taste Boutique in Lititz. The event will also include give-
sterile classroom setting.”
A unique Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania “Railroading Merit Badge” patch is an extra reward for participants who complete the workshop at the museum.
“It’s a lot of fun, but we couldn’t do it without our volunteers,” Shetrom said. Scouts must always be accompanied by an adult. There is a fee for the workshops, which are capped at 25 Scouts each and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
On-site and virtual railroading merit badge workshops for the remainder of the year will be scheduled and announced later. Virtual workshops are also popular; O’Connor said a Scout from South Korea participated.
The Railroad Museum of
Pennsylvania has a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a vast research library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center and programs, a museum store and special events and exhibits.
