Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) teams bring dogs to residents of retirement communities, schools, colleges, hospice centers, and rehab and addiction centers. The dogs provide a welcome distraction and support to those who benefit from the organization’s services. However, COVID-19 restrictions changed the demand for KPETS, and when Karen Gerth, founder and executive adviser of the organization, realized KPETS did not need all the space it was were renting for offices, she began looking for a new home for the organization. In the past, Gerth had worked at a Lancaster County retirement community. “I thought it would be neat to have an organization like KPETS on a long-term care facility campus,” said Gerth. In the spring of 2021, she contacted a friend who works at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road,

Gardner reported that the day care that had occupied a building near the edge of the campus had vacated in October of 2020. “ We weren’t looking for tenants, but it was also space that we weren’t going to use internally,” said Gardner. “It was a perfect space for (KPETS).” Not only is the space the right size, the building is nearly surrounded by a dog park used by Landis Homes residents. “Just having (KPETS) on the campus is a perk,” said Gardner. “They are close to home, and the service is available for our residents and our

When 28-year-old Brock Haller of Lititz, husband of Lexi and father of three young children, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2021, the outlook was uncertain. Following a delicate and complicated surgery two weeks after his diagnosis, Brock was left with a number of life-threatening side effects. Bonnie Martin is Lexi’s aunt, but more than that, she and her husband, Dave, fully understand life-altering medical challenges. “My husband is a quadriplegic,” said Bonnie, explaining that Dave was injured in an auto accident in
1985 that damaged his spinal cord. At the age of 22, he became paralyzed from the shoulders down. “When this happened to Brock, we had an extra level of compassion,” explained Bonnie. “It was actually Dave’s idea to do (hold a) concert. He wanted to give people with big hearts a fun way to show love and support to Brock and Lexi.” A benefit concert for the Hallers, billed as “A Night Filled With Worship and Rock Hits,” will be held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church (LEFC), 419 Pierson Road, Lititz, on Saturday, April 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Live music will be provided by local garage band Audio Algo-
Rhythm, and light snacks will be served. It is free to attend the concert, but registration is necessary. Those wishing to attend are asked to text 717-381-8655 to let organizers know. There will be opportunities to donate to a fund for the Hallers at the event. Bonnie explained that Brock’s tumor is a rare and aggressive type called craniopharyngioma. Brock was diagnosed after experiencing symptoms that mimicked depression. A specialist ordered an MRI, and the tumor was found near Brock’s pituitary gland, which affected his hormones. Because the tumor could not be drained, removal of most of the pituitary gland was necessary. Side effects of the tumor include short-term memory loss, diabetes insipidus, and disorien-
tation. “(Brock) is unable to retain any new memory for longer than eight minutes,” Bonnie reported. “He is unable to work, drive, or help care for their three small children.” Because Brock’s case was labeled a medical mystery, a surgeon at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where the operation was performed, recommended undergoing experimental treatment in California in early March. Audio AlgoRhythm is made up of the Martins’ son, Tucker, and his friend Justin Pennypacker on guitar; Justin’s father, Blaine, on bass; and Justin’s brother, Ben, on drums. “We are good friends with the Pennypackers,” said Bonnie, who explained that the group has gotten together to jam for friends. In addition to funds for medical expenses, Bonnie and Dave want to offer the Hallers hope. “Lexi and I are both caregivers for our husbands,” said Bonnie. “She is in the middle of raising their young children, and I remember what (that) was like.
It’s a handful.” Bonnie went on to explain that her family has built a successful and happy life in spite of the challenges. “We have found God to be faithful and to supply our needs,” she said. “Even though we recognize that right now it is unbelievably difficult and overwhelming (for the Hallers), we want to help them get to the other side of that,” Bonnie said.

There’s a war going on around you, and you’re invited to join the fight. Welcome to the Battle will be held on Friday, March 25, at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, 419 Pierson Road, Lititz. The event, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., is organized by North Star Initiative (NSI), a Lititz-based nonprofit that supports victims of human trafficking. Welcome to the Battle will bring together community agencies to discuss survivor impact, from rescue to restoration. Attendees will learn about the latest tactics traffickers are using to
recruit local women into the sex trade, how to identify trafficking activity and what to do if they suspect a family member or friend might be a target of traffickers. This is the fifth year for the fundraising event, said Alicia Corrado, executive director of NSI. “Lancaster County just launched a local Human Trafficking Task Force,” she explained. “This year, proceeds raised will go to (the task force) to aid their efforts as they rescue survivors of trafficking in our area.” NSI is a member of the task force, and the agency works to offer rescued vic-

NSI owns and operates The Harbor, a restoration home and program for domestic sex-trafficking victims. “Our goal is for every survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored, so she can return to the community and enjoy a life of sustained independence,” Corrado remarked. The task force uses the victim-centered approach, focusing on the restorative process of each victim, said task force coordinator Brad Ortenzi, who will be one of the panelists. Along with Ortenzi, Welcome to the Battle will feature panelists Heather Adams, Lancaster County District Attorney; Elizabeth Nolan, NSI clinical
director; Heather Castellino, deputy attorney general of Eastern Pennsylvania; and Jessica Williams, Pennsylvania state trooper and Human Trafficking Task Force coordinator for Eastern Pennsylvania. The panelists will present a discussion from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with opportunities for questions beforehand and afterward. Other agencies that will be represented at Welcome to the Battle include FREE (Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved), ZOE International, Greenlight Operation, She’s Somebody’s Daughter and TFC Global. Forstman, Corley Plan Concert Soprano and Lancaster native AddieRose Forstman née Brown and composer and pianist Maria Thompson Corley will present “Call Out Your Name” on Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The seed and core of the program are the works of American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, as set by American composers H. Leslie Adams, Victoria Bond, and Libby Larsen. These works begin an arc that leads from the recognition of oneself in nature, through the simultaneous triumph and pain of realizing that one’s growth means losing touch with past versions of one-
self and past comforts, to the depression, frustration, or anger at constantly having to release the old and assumed, and the fight for the new self to be acknowledged. The program also includes two world premiere songs by Corley, which are settings of poetry by Susanna Musser and Forstman, along with works by Gilda Lyons, Leonard Bernstein, Puccini, Tom Lehrer, Fats Waller, Nina Simone and Kurt Weill. Spanish Writing Contest Announced The Latin American Alliance has announced its annual Spanish Literature Contest, which will have the theme “The Family.” The contest, which accepts poetry and short stories, is open to all students of the LancasterLebanon IU 13 area studying the Spanish language, including students in middle school, high school, a college or university, or a trade school. With the desire to encourage and stimulate the learning,
use, and mastery of the Spanish language, the Latin American Alliance organizes the contest each spring. The theme of “The Family” reflects an important dynamic within the Hispanic culture. The submitted works will be judged on their originality, creativity, and literary quality, along with correct usage of grammar, verb tenses, extent of vocabulary, and creativity of expression and presentation. After review by the judges, who
are Hispanic business and community leaders, teachers, and musicians, the winners will be determined in each of the four divisions, based on the students’ Spanish level. Recognition and monetary prizes for first, second, and third places will be awarded in special ceremonies.
