KKaedyn Williams ascends to top of his own podium
aedyn Williams achieved so much during his time wrestling at Manheim Township that it’s difficult to single out one greatest accomplishment. But if you could, it would be that he overcame challenges to reach his full potential, that he became the best wrestler that he could be, that he became the best version of Kaedyn Williams that he could be.
On March 9 at Hershey’s Giant Center, Kaedyn’s spectacular senior season and career reached a conclusion with a bronze-medal finish at the PIAA Class AAA championships. He ended his 12th-grade year with a spectacular 37-1 record and a stellar career mark of 115-6.
“It’s been a journey,” said Kaedyn. “It’s taken a while for me to mature as a person and finding
out how strong of a person I am. Wrestling has really taught me a lot about myself as a person. I’ve grown a lot because of wrestling, just in the way I know my body, what it needs and when it needs it.”
“Wrestling has really taught me a lot about myself as a person.”
In addition to this year’s finish, Kaedyn captured a state title as a freshman and finished third in the state as a sophomore and fourth as a junior. Kaedyn also won four District Three Class AAA titles.
“I’d say the accomplishment I’m most proud of is my state title,” said Kaedyn. “I know what I’m capable of. It’s what pushed me
every single day. It just comes down to mental. I’ve had my struggles with wrestling, which is a mentally challenging sport. I feel like I’m never going to quit. I feel like losing is never an option. When I do take it on the chin, I let it sink in and learn from it.”
“Kaedyn is the type of wrestler who knows how to flip the switch on, especially in the postseason,” said Manheim Township head coach Aaron Moldoff. “He’s a fun kid to be around off the mat, but when it’s go time, he’s always ready. His wrestling IQ is unreal, and he was hungry to get back on top of the podium.”
When Kaedyn was 5, he brought home a flyer about wrestling from his kindergarten class. But it was a rivalry with his brother, Kamdyn, and support from his father that really caused Kaedyn’s love for the sport to take hold.
“It’s about persevering and not

We can’t control the future. But we can help shape it, give it a deliberate nudge. Not unlike the forward-thinking founders of Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) did.
LCCF exists for the sole purpose of enhancing the quality of life for current and future residents of Lancaster County. LCCF is celebrating its 100th
year in 2024 by conducting four community events designed to get local citizens thinking about what Lancaster County might look like over the next 100 years.
“Lancaster County has evolved in many ways, and in many ways it hasn’t,” said Valentina Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “The founders of Lancaster County Community Foundation were envisioning a future. That’s what contributing
For a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.

There’s no business like show business
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts will present “Annie Get Your Gun” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 21, 22 and 23, at Lancaster Country Day School’s Gardner Theater, 725 Hamilton
Road, Lancaster. Shows will begin at 7 p.m., and Saturday will include a matinee at 1:30 p.m. in addition to the evening performance.
Tickets for general admission and reserved seating are available to purchase online for a discounted price, and tickets will be sold at the door prior to each show. Children will receive a discounted rate for both general admission and reserved seating.

Director Brittany Beitzel’s decision to select “Annie Get Your Gun” as this year’s spring musical was influenced by multiple factors. The play is a personal favorite of Beitzel’s, and she cites it as the main reason she decided to pursue theater professionally after seeing it for the first time at 13 years old. “I was just so inspired by the story, the sweeping music and the comedy,” Beitzel said. “I felt like it would be the perfect show for these kids to take on, and it also is a show that speaks a lot to some deeper meanings.”
“Annie Get Your Gun” was debuted on Broadway in 1946, featuring music and lyrics written by renowned composer Irving Berlin. The story is based on the life and exploits of Annie Oakley, a real-life sharpshooter who rose to fame in the late 19th century as a performer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Annie, played by Mary Frances Eschenwald of Ronks, is a rowdy and kind-hearted markswoman who learned to shoot as a child to provide for her family in rural Ohio. After defeating famous gunman Frank Butler, played by Jack Etter, Annie embarks on a journey to become one of the most legendary performers in American history.
As a young woman with humble origins, Annie faces many challenges as she climbs to stardom. The play incorporates themes such as humility, rivalry, selfless love and treating others with compassion as Annie navigates the world of show business and defies

the prejudices of her time.
“It’s an incredible story that I’m really passionate about,” Eschenwald said. “Annie Oakley is such a one-in-a-million character; she has a competitive, prideful side to her, but she also wears her heart on her sleeve and fights for equality and justice for others.” Eschenwald and Etter will star beside Brian Boyle as Buffalo Bill and Josiah Werner in the role
of Charlie Davenport.
The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts draws students from across Lancaster County, many of whom are homeschooled. This is the first year the academy will hold a show at Gardner Theater, making “Annie Get Your Gun” one of its largest-scale productions to date.

giving up,” said Kaedyn. “I’ve had obstacles and times I could’ve quit. But I just couldn’t leave it the way it was. It’s important to know how strong you are, even if you get to a point where you know there’s no going back.”
Kaedyn’s incredible scholastic career bodes well for future success in wrestling. He has committed to continue his athletic and academic careers at Rider
University, where he’s considering a major in business.
“Coming into the season, I had some anxiety and doubt because I hadn’t competed in a long time,” said Kaedyn. “But I also had a chip on my shoulder because I knew how good I was, and I wasn’t getting the recognition I deserved. It was the best season of my career. It was a pretty dominant season. It was my most complete season.”

Pastors and lay leaders will offer reflections and guide the congregation through the service. The love feast will include congregational singing and offer handwashing as an alternative to feetwashing. Men and women will be seated separately, with feetwashing taking place around tables.
Participants will receive a checklist to check off the matching eggs they have located. The stops are not in any special order and families can move at their own pace. Once the children have completed their egg list, they will receive a reward.

take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at Pod 2 at Rock Lititz, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd. It’s being called Celebrating Creative Expression, and it will be an evening of creativity and celebration of the arts.
The event is free, and everyone is welcome.
“We know that if we invest in the arts, it’s really good for the local community,” said Schade. “It’s important for students to have access to the arts. It’s a strategic way to build a thriving community. It brings people together. Creative expression and the arts is one of the things that makes us human and connects us. It’s also one of the big parts of Lancaster County’s past, and we look forward to fostering it in the future.”
In addition to light refreshments and music, Celebrating Creative Expression will feature poetry, collaborative art, a sound circle and a wearable collage called “Our Common Thread.” Also that evening, winners of LCCF’s Shaping Tomorrow grants, awards and scholarships will be announced.
About 100 to 150 people are expected to attend.
“It’s going to be a really

vibrant two hours,” said Schade. “You can just walk around and choose your own adventure. You can take part in all of them, or you can sit back and watch. You can mix and mingle. It’s a really unique, engaging experience.”
Headquartered at 24 W. King St., Suite 201, Lancaster, LCCF was founded in 1924 by Martin Harnish. Today, LCCF handles $200 million in community assets and seeks to impact the quality of life in Lancaster County through improving the environment, neighborhoods, and health, education and youth programs, as well as access to culture and the
arts.
“We care for the community’s endowment,” said Schade. “It’s a tool of philanthropy. Small gifts don’t stay small. The purpose of the community foundation is to manage the endowment, so we can continue to embolden the community through impactful programs. We work with community members to implement it. Thanks to many visionary founders, we’re in a position to create opportunities that can change the next 100 years.”

always come up with ways to get the job done.
“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common. It might have been a higher calling because it’s not for everyone.”
LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast club had met at a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand before a fire temporarily shut down the restaurant.
In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at the Lititz VFW, 14 N. Spruce St., at 7:30
a.m. on April 20; at American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata, at 8 a.m. on May 18; and at Shady Maple Restaurant, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, at 7 a.m. on June 15. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.
“It didn’t start out with a mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives
Lititz band seeks musicians
The Lititz Community Band, a volunteer wind ensemble serving the greater Lititz community, is made up of approximately 60 local musicians from the Lititz, Lancaster and Manheim areas. Its repertoire includes patriotic tunes, marches, jazz and
pops standards, show tunes and wind band classics. Performances are held May through August. Typical performances include special local events like Taste of Lititz and the local Fourth of July festivities, as well as performances at local
on the line.”
A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.
“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into civilian life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”
Anywhere from 100 to 130 local veterans show up for the breakfasts. Most hail from the Vietnam War era, but the group also includes veterans of World War II, Korean War, the war in Afghanistan and other military conflicts.
“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”
According to the United
States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry. “It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with likeminded people. For some, it’s a way to continue to serve the community.”
Veterans are encouraged to make reservations for the breakfast by calling Mary at 717-929-0310.
